After update, cannot play audio cds (via kscd or dragon player)

Hello!
Subject says it all.
I just did a pacman -Syu   on my system.  Afterwards, I am now unable to play audio cds.... nothing happens.
I insert a known-working cd in drive, and I don't get any sort of device insertion notification from kde. Fine, no big deal.  But when I open kscd, and hit the play button... nothing happens.  Same with dragon.  What happened? And how to fix?
Many thanks!

Now, just immediately before my last recent update to my system yesterday, I was having no troubles with the same audio cds, or with dragon player.
sorry corey_s , i have no idea .

  • Cannot play audio CDs in totem

I have totem-gstreamer and the gstreamer plugins for cdaudio, cdio and cdparanoia.
I am in the audio and optical group.
    The permissions of my cd-rom are as follows: brw-r----- 1 root audio 22, 0 2007-08-06 22:35 /dev/hdc
The audio CD appears as an icon on my desktop when I insert it.
No other audio application is running.
I can play audio cds using the cdplay program cdkit provides.
But, when I start totem the option Play Disc 'Audio CD' is greyed out.
I've tried turning HAL off and restarting totem to no avail.
I've tried totem-xine and still it does not work.
The only thing that does give some food for thought is that when I kill gnome-vfs-daemon the option "Play Disc "Audio CD"" disappears...
    Help!

    Hello arbee,
It seems certain that the problem lies with your CD player. It is well-known that many older CD players will not read CD-R discs. If you look at this two-year old discussion you'll see what the issues are for someone who had a similar experience to yourself.
This discussion also suggests that you might get better results from using a higher-grade burning programme, such as Toast -- but nothing's certain.
    Best wishes,
    Martin

  • After update, cannot play music videos

For the last couple of months, my ipod has been working just dandy. I download the newest update today, and update my ipod software, and purchase a music video. The video downloads, and I try to move it from my library to my ipod. It gives me an error message saying I must update my ipod's software to run it, but I just updated the software, and upon looking in my summary tab, the update button is "gray". Can anyone help me?

I'm having the same problem. Whenever I try to play a video (that used to play a week or so ago), iTunes closes and I get the windows option to send an error report which I LOVE TO DO even though it doesn't seem to do anything. I reloaded iTunes. Didn't fix. I reloaded Quicktime and Quicktime Pro... didn't fix it. I can play the videos with Quicktime on its own but if I double click from iTunes, it shuts down. I also tried unchecking those boxes on the preferences screen from edit menu but nothing is working. Even in safe mode, it's not working. It's frustrating.
    Hopefully an answer comes.

  • Cannot play audio CD with Creative MediaSource Pla

    Hi All,
I recently installed an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum soundcard and the Creative MediaSource Player software. I also purchased Creative 5. Analog speakers. Have everything configured pretty well now and really enjoying the enhanced sounds!
My problem is that I cannot play audio CDs using the MediaSource Player. I can see my DVD Player and CD Player in the MediaSource Player 'Source' column and a list of all the tracks on the CD. (no track info, just track numbers and length)
When I double-click on a track it cycles through all the tracks and then places an 'X' next to each one in the 'Now Playing' list window. If I have other music files from my harddri've available, it will start playing one of them.
I've tried different CDs with the same results.
I can use both the DVD and CD dri'ves to play an audio CD if I use any other player (Winamp, Windows Media Player, etc.) and use both dri'ves everyday for loading software and reading files. It will also read the demo DVD Audio disk that came with the card using the DVD-Audio player they provide so I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the hardware or drivers.
I've read all the info that came with the card and on the Creative Web site and have been through every configuration screen multiple times but haven't found a switch that turns this feature on.
Would like to get this working so I can standardize on one player that allows me to use all the advanced features of my new card.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.

A good way to see what kinds of things you might need for something like vlc is to look at the optional dependencies for the package.  So if you do pacman -Qi vlc if the package is installed on your system already, or pacman -Si vlc if not yet installed, you can see in the output what kinds of optional dependencies there are.  Typically there is a short description of the extra functionality that the optional dependency can provide as well.
So in the case of vlc (and the libcdio optional dep) I get:
    $ pacman -Qi vlc
    Name           : vlc
    <SNIP>
Optional Deps  : avahi: for service discovery using bonjour protocol [installed]
                     <SNIP SOME MORE>

libcaca: for colored ASCII art video output [installed]
                     libgme: for libgme plugin [installed]
                     librsvg: for SVG plugin [installed]
gnome-vfs: for GNOME Virtual File System support

    Hello there, tomazdes.
The following Knowledge Base article written for the USB SuperDrive, offers some practical steps to try when issues present themselves with particular content playback (feel free to skip Step 3 when working with an iMac or MacBook with built-in drives):
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
    Particularly:
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • IOS 6.0.1 Safari won't play audio files. Error: "Cannot play audio file."

I recently updated my iPad to iOS 6.0.1, now Safari won't play audio files in any format. Error: "Cannot play audio file." Previously, it worked fine. I tried downloading and using GoogleChrome and Opera Mini, and these also won't play audio. What's up??

Solved the problem. It seems that once iOS 6.0.1 installed, it caused all of my browsers to mishandle audio files. When I reset the iPad, that cleared up the problem.
Before upgrading to iOS 6, my browsers would "autoplay" the sound files. After iOS 6, "autoplay" is disabled so you have to manually click play to play them.
Nonetheless, everything is working fine again except for "autoplay," which I can live with.

  • Quicktime and Playing Audio CDs - Why Can't I Select the Whole CD to Play?

I unfortunately agreed to update my Quicktime software when prompted by Apple. Since then, when I try to play audio CDs while working on my Mac, I have to select one song at a time and then select "play" in order to hear it. Now, only 48 hours ago, all I had to do was double click on the audio CD and the whole thing would play with no problem. This is why I am so wary of this so-called "convenient" and "user friendly" update alerts because you never know what the update actually contains and how it is going to change the behavior of your computer!
Anyone out there in the Mac community know how to fix this problem?

Anyone out there in the Mac community know how to fix this problem?
Would assume most people now use iTunes to import/convert audio files for playback/storage on their computer/iPod and/or burning of custom MP3 CDs which hold on the order of 10 times as much music and are compatible with most current generation CD/DVD players.

    Get drive speed succeeded.

simple : you put itunes application in a folder. then you reinstall itunes 4.7 for example. then put 4.7 at the end of itunes application name, same with itunes 5. then drop each of them in the dock. decide where you want to have all the playlists so you don't have to switcha ll the time between them. then when you need to listen to a cd or import mp3, you launch itunes 4.7. then the unknown artist folder in your home folder/music will be placed in a music folder somewhere on your HD. create playlist from this folder.
then you activate itunes 5 for ipod sync or any other purpose. when itunes 6 will be finally updated, you remove itunes 5 and the home/music files of itunes 5, then reinstall the new itunes 6, which will normally take over the playlists of 4.7.
apple makes it not simple but more and more complex so it has the greatness of sophistication and class but the weakness of complexity and bugs ! hope this does not last !
thanks for the beer, send it thru internet !

  • Longest playing audio CDs?

I've just begun converting cassettes to digital via ADS Instant Music and Roxio's CD Spin Doctor. I then import them to iTunes (very easy process) and will create CDs...hopefully.
What I'm finding right now is that the cassettes I'm copying are running longer than my 80 min. audio CDs. I searched the web but haven't found CDs larger/longer than 80 min. I need 100 or 120. Can anyone tell me who might have them...........or a brand name to look for? I really don't want to cut songs if I can avoid it.
    Thanks for any recommendations.

I just did a quick google search--because I had read that it was possible to get longer-length CDs. The source I found is in England (http://www.dvdshoponline.co.uk/90Min_CD-RMedia.html ), but I'm sure you could find these discs in other countries. From what I've read, the TDK brand is the most reliable 90-99 minute CD-R.
And, also be warned that MANY CD players won't recognize or play these disks--so before you waste a lot of time and money creating them, you may want to change your playlist contents and keep them under 80 minutes. Or, burn just one or two and see if they work for you.
On Edit: You may want to read this helpful article re: 90 minute CD-Rs:

  • Cannot play audio from macbook pro 2009 to tv using hdmi with adapter

MacBook Pro 2009. I cannot get audio from my my macbook pro to tv using an hdmi adapter

That is because the 2009 MBP does not support audio via the minidisplay port.  You will have to tap the audio output port for audio and use the RCA audio input connections on the TV.
    Ciao.

After updating to Yosemite I have to go into System Prefs after every reboot to change the balance in sound to make sound stereo, always defaults to the right speaker.  Anyone know what the fix for this is?  Repair perms? External audio device conflict?  Using Logitech speaker system w/ 2 satellite speakers and a sub-woofer and never had a problem w/ them over the past 10 yrs.

  • Cannot play audio files

So I cannot play songs on my iPod but the audio on my movies are working fine. Does anyone else have this problem or do you know what's wrong?

    Hi!
I created a new thread about this as I was thinking one should not pick up a Solved thread, but it was shut down and deleted as I was breaking policy rules.... sorry about that. I will just unsolve this thread and pick it up again:
I continue to get an error with playing audio that says in Exaile "playsinkX" where X is a number starting with 0 and increasing with one for every time I try to play a audio file,
and in Xnoise "GstError parsed: configured audiosink audiobin is not working." VLC works fine however.
I have the latest gstreamer0.10-plugins installed.
If I keep on rebooting, one time now and then it works, but I cannot seem to find a solution to what makes it work or not.

  • I have an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultanious Dual_Band) (MC340LL/A), and updated the software.  After updating no devices can connect via wifi.  Any suggestions.

I have an Appl,e AirPort Extreme Base Station (Simultaneous Dual_Band( MC340LL/A.  After updating the software, no devices can connect via wifi.

As suggested in another discussion area, (AirPort), I reset the AEBS to factory defaults. On the TV, I went to >Settings>General>Network>Configure Wireless>Wireless Networks. I could then see the generic "Apple Network xxxxx" on the TV. From my MacBookPro, I verified that I could connect to the TV by launching iTunes and noting that the TV was now visible in the "Devices" menu. Went back to the AEBS and ran through the "Setup" routine. I did NOT use the "Previous Settings" but instead, saved the old settings profile, created a new wireless network and new settings profile and enabled WPA2 Personal encryption. I then went back to the TV and went through the "Settings" routine again (as noted above). This time, after entering my WPA2 password, the TV connected to the network and problem was solved. Thanks.
