After update imac i7 3,4 won't boot up.

It starts up, you hear the fan, hard drive and cd. Then it turns back off and the sequence starts over again. Over and over. Tried to zap pram. Tried to hold down schift and/or option. Nothing worked. I disconnected everything except keyboard and touchpad. Tried also without ethernet......

OK, read the instructions carefully for the following resets. Do each one at least 2 x if you don't have success the first time. First restart in Safe Mode and then do both SMC & PRAM resets. I know you think you already did these but from your first  post I have some doubts that you did them correctly and it won't hurt to do them again anyway.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • Installed the latest Java update today on my older iMac and now it won't boot up at all. 2007 model worked fine this morning, now disk first aid say boot blocks f'ed.

I am using an older mid 2007 imac 24 inch running snow leopard 10.6.8
I normally accept software update recs, and today when installing the security update to java, all went fine till restart, when I got the universal "NO" sign, the circle with the line through it and just spinning gray bars underneath.
Booted from system disks, ran first aid, said the boot block partitions or something like that needed updating but disk appears to be ok. Still not working.
Do you think Alsoft Disk Warrior will fix? I am running off external back up drive now.
Thanks for any help or advice. Apple as usual is as useless as tits on a bull, or a screen door on a submarine, pick your simile...

If your backup's up to date it might be less hassle to erase the internal and clone back from the backup. Don't allow the update next time it appears - you're not the only one having problems it would seem.
Note; the message "updating boot partitions" is a standard message that appears after a repair run. It won't go away and should be ignored.
Provided the message "The volume Macintosh HD Seems to be OK" in green has appeared, your disc fle system is fine.

  • WinXP booted after BIOS update cleared RAID setting, now won't boot in RAID mode

I updated the P965 Platinum BIOS to 1.7 and my system stopped booting.  After much experimentation I discovered it would boot if I unplugged the monitor and mouse, so I was able to "upgrade" to 1.6, and it's working again.  However, the first time it booted blind with 1.7 it got all the way to Windows before I realized what happened.
My system was set up with a RAID1 pair, but the BIOS upgrade cleared the SATA mode to IDE, and it booted Windows before I changed it back.  Now Windows won't boot when I set it to RAID.  It complains <windows>/system32/hal.dll is missing or corrupt.  It seems to work (mostly) when I put it back to IDE mode.  How do I get it back to RAID1?

Also, you do not by have by any chance a Nvidia based card in system?

  • After updating to latest version, Firefox won't open

I am running Windows 7. After updating to the latest version, Firefox won't open. I get a notice when I try to open Firefox saying "Couldn't load XPCOM. Is there a way I can undo the update so I can get Firefox to open. It's my favorite browser...I'm having to use another browser to ask my question.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 23: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

  • After updating to ios7, my apps won't update and I can't download anything from the App Store or iTunes Store.

After updating to ios 7, I have tried to update my apps and I can't. I press update and put my password in, the blue circle goes round, but in a few seconds, it stops and acts as if nothing happened in the first place.
Please help, as I can't play a game as it needs the new update!
    Thank you.

This has been happening to a few people right after upgrading. Just wait and give it some time and you will get the updates. The other thing you may see for a while is that there are updates available, which in fact, have already updated previously. THose go away magically on their own.
If you're feeling impatient, you could try to sign out of the App store from your Apple ID then sign back in. Not sure that's really helping anyone, but it may.

  • After updating to itunes 9, ipod won't sync

after updating to itunes 9 when trying to sync my ipod classic 160gb i get a message saying cant read ipod disc with exclamation point. help!

If you have corrupted songs in your itunes music folder it will stop when it gets to that song. Usually it will give you an error message. Delete the corrupted song and try again from the song after the corrupted one. Also, getting a call or text in the middle of a sync will interrupt it I have noticed.

  • Bios updated and now K8N Neo won't boot? FIXED!

Successfully restored from backup (after some hassles!), but thanks to everyone who helped.
Having messed with the bios some more, I *think* I now know what the problem was.  And *blush*, I think it was my fault all along *blush*.
I think I had one of the drives selected at the top in Hard Disk Boot sequence, instead of the SCSI - Raid Array.
That would mean it was only reading half the MBR at boot time which would kindof explain the problems I was having.
Still, we live and learn.  Thank God for backups!
    Cheers all
    Chippy
I hope someone can please help me?
I just upgraded my K8N Neo2 bios from 1.4b to Easybios 1.3c (or whatever its called).
I took all the proper precautions and the bios update itself has worked just fine. My system is "working" OK.
However, I can't boot. The system POSTs fine, detects the raid0 array just fine and then falls over with an MBR 1 error and an MBR 3 error.
I booted from the XP install CD and loaded up recovery console, and I can log on to the array. The array and all data is fine.
So it looks like its just the MBR record that is screwed. Is this because of some incompatibiliy between my old and new bios?
And anyway, please does anyone know how to fix it? I suppose I can try to rebuild the MBR somehow, but I don't know how. And I really DO NOT want to risk losing all of the data on the array. Yes, I have a full back up, but I don't want to end up having to rely on it!
Has anyone seen this problem before when doing a bios update? And any ideas how to fix it?
(I guess I could flash back to 1.4b, but I really would like a later bios version to go with my new - as yet untested - Opty 146).
    Thanks

Thanks for the tip, Doc.  But I have entered the bios settings from scratch.
I can try it again, but why do you think that might work?  There really aren't two many sata and raid settings to make - all you have to do is enable the two channels (sata3 and sata3) and then enable them also in the raid menu.  That's it.  And the board "sees" the raid array just fine, its just it won't boot anymore.  I can read and write to the array no problem from Windows Recovery Console, so I conclude that the hardware is all working properly.  I think its an MBR incompatibility issue between the two bios versions... or maybe MBR corruption.
I seem to remember some people having problems with this a year or so ago when upgrade this bios from 1.4 to 1.5.  Some people were having to do complete Windows reinstalls to fix it.  That was why I didn't update my bios sooner.
But I asked around this time and it seemed those problems had been resolved.
    Seems I was mistaken!
    Any other thoughts / suggestions?
    Thanks
    Chip

  • IMac G4 800 17inch won't boot.

    Hi,
I posted a topic some months ago about a problem I was experiencing with an old G4 iMac I own. The problem is still not fixed so here's an update of the problem.
    Spec;
    iMac G4 17inch 768 mb ram, Airport card, OS X 10.2.8
When you turn on the computer all i get is the grey screen with the apple logo. No spinning timer to say its booting up. It stays like this until you turn it off.
    What i've tried so far;
All usb devises etc have been disconnected ( only keyboard and mouse left)
    Reset the PRAM
    Reset the Power management unit
Inserted the installer disk, held down C but still it won't boot to the installer / disk utility options. However the timer wheel appears but nothing happens
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a lose end as to what to do next!
    Thanks

Hi! You've tried most things but try holding the "x" key down at boot and if that doesn't work try the shift key. have you tried the hardware test disc? Tom

  • After EFI 1.1 upgrade, Linux won't boot

I've been using Ubuntu Linux on my macbook from a year now (when I bought it). It's been working flawlessly until today.
I've updated to EFI 1.1 (it's a macbook C2D from december 2006) and after succesfull install, the installer confirmed it, Ubuntu won't boot.
I've tried everything, including PRAM and SMC clearing. I've reinstalled OS/X and the problem persists. Also the Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) and Gutsy (7.10 beta) Live-CDs stall at boot.
It is possible to boot the computer with Knoppix 5.1.1 (older kernel) but the keyboard is erratic and doesn't detect hard drive.
It was supposed that this update solved some problems with the keyboard under grub also. Mine is worse than ever, I can't type anything nor use the emergency shell in Linux. In Knoppix, keystrokes show repeated chars in the screen, making it unusable.
Help please, this computer is my worktool. Thank you.

I update to EFI 1.1 also. I was not able to boot into windows through bootcamp. It hangs on the gray screen. I try to use the option boot so it will show up the partition. Selecting Mac OS X boots fine, but when selecting windows, the mouse and screen freezed. So i tried PRAM clearing. same thing. Then I set the startup disk to Windows (in OS X preference) and I tried to press and hold power button until it finally boot into windows. Not sure what it did, but it's now works fine.

  • 17" White iMac w/Bootcamp XP won't boot.

I have a 17' white iMac with Leopard and Bootcamp with XP installed, and it was stopped by punching the power button.
Now it won't boot at all. Usually I just get the gray screen that comes up after the chime and a moveable cursor.
Sometimes, if I unplug it for several hours, I can boot and hold the OPTION key and get the two HD-pictures for OSX and XP, but when I get these it will boot into the op sys, but then hangs.
I can boot into TARGET mode and have ordered a 800/400 Firewire cable to try and get stuff off the computer to my 24" 09 iMac. Most of my data is on the Bootcamp Windows partition.
    (a) Will reinstalling OSX from DVD destroy Bootcamp partion?
    (b) Any way to run OSX (or XP) from DVD so I can access the HD?
    (c) Any other tricks or links to things to do?
    Thanks.

    [ 240.576219] Tainted: P O 3.19.2-1-ARCH #1
    Anyone else experiencing the same?

    Thanks!
I did the same and it worked... kind of. The first three reboots it failed (but did not stop the system from booting) producing:
zpool[426]: cannot import 'data': one or more devices is currently unavailable
    systemd[1]: zfs-import-cache.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
The second boot also resulted in a kernel panic, but as far as I can tell unrelated to zfs.
After reboot one and three imported the pool manually.
From the fourth reboot on loading from cache file always succeeded. However, I it takes faily long (~8 seconds) and even shows
[*** ] A start job is running for Import ZFS pools by cache (Xmin Ys / no limit)
briefly. Altough I might only notice that because the recent updates sped up oder parts of the boot process. Did you observe a slowdown during boot time, too, kinghajj?
