After update - iTunes freezes and needs a force quit when I plug in any device!

I recently update to OS X Yosemite and I also updated my iTunes to 12.1 - but now every time I plug in my iPhone 6 or my iPad mini, my iTunes freezes and I have to force quit. So now I can't even plug in and sync my devices or update them or do anything!
Help? Anyone?

Anybody have any idea how to fix this? Or anything similar happening to you?

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • FCP X freezes and must force quit?  I have a FCP installed on a Mac Mini (4 gig memory) and Lion OS.  The import files are large ACVHD files from a Canon G10 camera.  FCPX freezes and requires a force quit.  Is anyone else having these problems?

I am using FCP X on both a MacMini (10.7 with 4 Gig memory) and an iMac (10.6 with 4 gig memory).  The files are ACVHD files imported from a Canon G10 camcorder.  FCP is constantly freezing and requiring a forced quit.    Could it be that FCP X was not tested thoroughly for use on a Mac Mini?

I think it's safe to say that FCPX wasn't tested throroughly for use on anything.
with that out of the way, there are many variables as to what might cause your problems, but I don't think it's the mac mini as long as it meets the specified minimum requirements (especially the graphics card).
You might try creating a camera archive first and then importing from that.
The other issue might be the file format itself; you might need to use Clipwrap first. Maybe someone who has the same camera can chime in.

My Mac has been in the shop (Genius Bar) 4 times in the last several months for an array of problems. They've diagnosed and replaced a broken riser and diagnosed (and I replaced) a defective 2nd back-up internal drive. I've also moved my large library of fonts (I'm a designer) to an external drive and now use Font Book to very gradually add only the fonts I'm currently using. Yet there is still the lingering problem that periodically an application will freeze and refuse to force quit. Some other applicatons may still be working fine. I cannot reboot; if I try to restart from the menu bar it disappears and the whole system freezes. So I have to turn it off with the power button, wait a minute and then start up again. This happens several times a day, although I am at times able to work fiveours straight with no problems.
[I've repaired permissions and zapped PRAM countless times.]
I'm now convinced there must be a software problem/conflict. But how the **** do I figure out what that is?
Oh, and of course this is all happening when work is insanely busy. HELP, please.

The only pattern I can see is that it seems to lock up when an iPod is mounted or mounting. There isn't any problems just opening iTunes and listening to music. But, mounting devices seems to hang it up.
    Any thoughts, or solutions?
Try plugging the iPod into a different USB port - does it continue to freeze iTunes?

  • I am using iPhoto 11 and my library has 736.5mb on disk. I have problems with iPhoto stalling and needing to force quit. I have rebuilt my library. Can you suggest anything else?

I am using iPhoto 11 and my library has 736.5mb on disk. I have problems with iPhoto stalling and needing to force quit. I have rebuilt my library. Can you suggest anything else? Thanks, Rose

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that does'nt help log into another user account on your Mac and try iPhoto from there.

  • Help! I'm in UK and need to recharge but when I plug in (using a power converter) the square white batter pack is buzzing - what does it mean????

Help! I'm in UK and need to recharge but when I plug in (using a power converter) the square white unit is buzzing - what does it mean? I am using a power adaptor that works for other items - shaver, phone etc. and they don't buzz - it's coming from the square white unit before it's connected to the computer so I don't want to then connect my mac incase it means there's something wrong. Getting desperate as I need to recharge!! Thanks for any help!

    Hi
If you're using a converter that changes the voltage from the UK ~230V to say 120V, rather than just a converter to different outlet/plug/socket sizes - then that's likely the problem.
All the Apple power units I've seen are rated from 100V to  240V & do not require any sort of voltage converter, just something to let you plug it into a UK outlet (or an Apple cable/connector set). Many cheap voltage converters can cause buzzing as you've described.
Many supermarkets & hardware/general stores will sell the right 'adaptor' for a couple of £UK - I'd find one rather than continue with the buzzing.

  • After updating to the ios5, my ipad keeps restoring when i plug it into itunes.  I can't sync it or anything, and it has been restored about 20 times today and i can't get any further than that.  Please help!

After updating to iOS 5 today, i was able to get my iphone working with virtually no problem.  The issue i am having is that after i finished with my phone, i tryied to do the same with my ipad.  Everytime it is plugged into itunes, it keeps saying it needs to restore over and over again.  I have done this about 20 times today and have lost it.  I can't sync anything with it, especially my music or calendars.  Anyone know of a solution?

Had this problem yesterday while syncing my iphone to PC. iTunes asked if I wanted to upgrade to iTunes 9 and iphone 3.1. I agreed. The sync failed saying it couldn't identify my iphone and then asked me to restore my iphone.
I had to do a restore to get 3.1 loaded (first time I've had a problem with an update) but I did get it done .. then had to reload all my apps, audio, video with a 1+ hr sync.
But it did works .. and no problems of any kind (and my email works just fine)

  • IPhoto freezes and won't 'force quit'

9.1.3 freezes when trying to resize the window and also won't scroll through photos, goes about halfway and returns to top. This is a question and an answer. Apple was NO help I am 2 weeks out of phone support, I am not paying $50 to help them fix their own software issue. The answer? Revert to 9.1. 9.1 works just fine. I hope this helps someone else before Apple pulls it for being 'negative'. Wait for the update after 9.1.3 before upgrading!!

When I force quit the pop-up window appears.
    What pop-up window?

  • My MacBook Air Freeze and had to force quit

    Hi,
My machinge ( 1.4 GHz, 2GB Memory) is running on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8. Recently, my machine has been freezing a lot even when I'm not using running many application. Just Word and Internet Browser. I had to force quit. These has happened to me almost twice a day for the past 2 weeks. I've repair the disk with "Disk Utlity" but problem still persist. Can someone tell me what happen? I'm feeling really annoyed and frustrated

That repair should be guaranteed. I would try running the Apple Hardware Test to see if it reports anything and I would try reseating the ram chips, after that I would take it back to Apple.

  • Firefox freezes and must be force quit and restart over and over

Generally firefox freezes after a while when I am using it and I must either close the window or force quit firefox. Also firefox is moving much slower than it did. How might the program be fixed because I really like firefox?

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing when you open it. Please do the following to give us crash IDs that will help us understand more about the crash.
#'''(OS X 10.6 or previous)''' Click the '''Finder''' icon in the dock. Your home folder will be selected. In the right side of the window, click the Library folder to open it. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.<br>'''(OS X 10.7 or above)''' Click the '''Finder''' icon in the dock. On the menu bar, click the '''Go''' menu, hold down the '''option''' or '''alt''' key and select '''Library'''. A window will open containing your Library folder. Then open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.
#Open the 5 most recent files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

  • ICal freezes and I must force quit

Can not get iCal to work at all. It will launch and then will immediatly freeze and I have to force quit. It's been a few days like this so I've restarted numerous times, checked my activity monitor, confirmed that I have Helvetica installed, turned off anything associated with iCal, tried to download and re-install but wasn't allowed. I tried to find it on the install disc but couldn't find it listed amongst the bundled software. I checked for updates and there aren't any.
    HELP. anyone have other suggestions?

Hi. This happened to me too when I first got my Macbook, and I also couldn't find my install disc. Do you get that taunting little spinning wheel immediately when you open it? I was still under my original warranty at the time, and this is what Apple had me do (some of which you have already done, so I won't list it):
-Do you have other users on your computer, and does iCal work for them?
-Try deleting the preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist. Quit iCal first, and note that you will have to re-enter your settings. You can probably drag them to your desktop also and restart.
-Call Apple and get a new install disc (they sent me mine for free). You can do an archive install of just iCal, I believe, and they can walk you through it.
    Good luck!

I suggest you look at the posts in the pre-tiger OS X discussions, maybe this one and if you can't find anything related re-post your question there.
