After update, no computer information, no reports

After installing OS X 10.5.x on a PPC (upgrade from 10.4.11.) I experience several issues. One of them is related to ARD 3.3:
After doing the upgrade, installing all other updates and security fixes, I'm just able to view and control computers via ARD, but don't get any system information, cannot create reports or even copy files by drag&drop.
For example, the column "ARD" which shows the installed ARD version on the remote computer still holds the old version information, although I created a custom client installation program and installed it on the remote computer (XServe PPC G5).
I tried everything (at least, what I know). Even trashing the preferences file of ARD did not work (just caused some work to me to set up everything again).
At the remote computers, I ensured that ARD is enabled in system preferences and the user that logs in has sufficient permissions in ARD to create reports, etc..
Have been there any changes made to new version of ARD regarding required ports that must be accessible on the remote computer ?
Is there anything to check ? Are there known errors ?
How can I verify that ARD client runs on the remote computers ?

We have the same issue here on G5 2x2 GHz with Mac OS X 10.5.8:
When I am try to get reports with the newly updated Apple Remote Desktop Admin Software 3.3, it works around a while and then tells me success for all clients.... and that's it. The only feedback I get is the fields which was received, but no report.
Anyone any ideas?

Verify that your domain file is located in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder which will be invisible. However,
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For  Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

To open your domain file in Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
Since iWeb has discontinued by Apple the new systems don't handle the iWeb preference pane as it was in earlier.  The script corrects that situation and once you open the domain file the first time you can just use iWeb to open it from there on.  However, you'll need it if you plan on using more than one domain file. And adhear to the warning above.

How can I retrieve desktop files being erased after updating my computer?

The easiest method would be to restore them from the last Time Machine backup made just prior to the update.
Or use a file recovery application to recovery them.  Most have a demo mode so you can determine if it can find the files you need before purchasing it.  Go to MacUpdate.com and do a search for "recover files" to get a list of potential candidates.

I'm wondering how I can update my iPhone after having updated my computer to Lion.  Suddenly, I can't get proper software updates to my phone.  It didn't help matters that I changed my email shortly thereafter, and one of these issues is making me somewhat unrecognizable to Apple, or my phone to my computer.  Something's wrong. When I went to Apple for help, they asked me to put my Serial # in, and then it told me that there was a problem with that, too!  ***?  Anyone have this problem?

  • Firefox can't connect to any servers after updating my computer.

I have vista. When I read the help comments. They were for XP. I have no tool options/advanced tabs to click on that I can find. I have to access the internet through outlook. Also my Email has been giving me error messages. I hadn't used my computer in over 2 months so I had a lot of updates not just Firefox.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • After updates, my computer no longer recognizes my ipod.

I'd did everything indicated on the support page: restored, re-installed both itunes and the most recent ipod updater. Brought the ipod (40 gig with clicker and dock) into the apple store where the genius restored it, installed the latest update on the ipod and sent me home. Tried the ipod on all three computers. It was recognized by my imac on the desktop and in itunes, but then crashed the computer after successfully transferring two playlists.
That was the last time the ipod was recognized by anything at all: the updater doesn't see it anymore, and my desk top crashes a few minutes after I plug it in.
What's going on? Nothing in your support documentation works - I'm imagining that something in one or more of the latest updates has skewed the system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I really don't want to go back to a PC, but my husband's happily transferring tunes to his Rio as I suffer.
    Thanks in advance,

I'm having the same problem too. Was it the latest java update that did it? I'm very close to throwing my iPod against a wall...

  • Splashy stopped working after update, whole computer freezes instead o

I update by "pacman -Syu" yesterday, and when I started up my computer today (no restart yesterday) it freezes where everything should start loading.

Same problem here, Splashy is broken, I had to go back with previous mkinitcpio to get it working again.
Progress bar is frozen, I have to go with CTRL+ALT+F7 to get to my login screen.
@ ennui : removing the hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and the line SPLASH="splashy" in /etc/rc.conf, then running mkinitcpio -p kernel26 as root should do the job.

  • M7160n desktop with XP - after updates installed computer momentarily freezes, repeatedly.

This is a computer with XP Media Center 2002 edition I want to keep for attached legacy hardware.  After add-on HD crashed, I disconnected it and reinstalled operating system from scratch from original disks on original (and reformatted) HD.  Computer, without any additional software, appeared to work fine.
It took quite a while, but I eventually figured out how to installed SP3 and about 139 additional updates recommended by Microsoft site.
After this update, but before ANY other software installed, an old problem resurfaced which I had put up with for YEARS.  Previously two technicians were unable to fix problem after thorough checking and replacing of some parts.  Here is the issue >
After running for a while (20-30 minutes), the computer freezes for maybe 10 seconds, then resumes.  This continues to happen with greater frequency and length until it happens so often/long that computer becomes unusable.  If I do a restart (occassionally requiring a forced shutdown if I wait too long), the problem goes away for another 20-30 minutes, then the freeze, resume, etc starts again.
My feeling is that this must have been caused by one of the updates, but starting over again and thoroughly testing after each one of the 140 updates is installed is impractical.
    Any ideas?

    Steve, welcome to the forum.
I suggest checking two things: 1) check to see if the computer is getting hot.  This could definitely be caused by bad airflow.  You should do a thorough cleaning inside of the case and out. and 2) check the power supply unit (PSU) if this hasn't already been done.  The PSU can cause problems that one would not identify with it.  Frequent freezing is one of the symptoms.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the the PSU.

  • I can't access my Creative Cloud-installed programs after updating my payment information

I'd gone a couple of weeks between using my Creative Cloud apps, and this morning I found that my payment info for my Creative Cloud subscription had expired. After entering in an up-to-date credit card for payment, I received a payment confirmation and my creative cloud subscription service is shown as active, online. When I went to re-launch my Adobe applications, the Adobe Application Manager popped up and told me, incorrectly, that I needed to renew my subscription. Since I've already renewed, and received a confirmation number for the transaction, and the service is shown as being active online, what else can I do? Has anyone else had this issue? What did you do to resolve it? The Online Adobe Chat function has very long wait times, and isn't helping much!
    -Alan

I am experiencing the same problem. I called Adobe and the tech said that my subscription is shown as active. However, every time I click Photoshop, it still gives me the popup window "Renew your subscription." That popup says, "Go to the Subscription Manager."
When I go to the Subscription Manager, it does not take me any place that is helpful at all. The window says, "If you have just renewed your subscription, please wait 15 minutes and try again." The tech on the other line is saying that my subscription is shown as active and now says that it takes 4-24 hours. I have no faith in the online help nor in the phone support. It is faulty and even the Adobe tech himself said, "I talked to my manager and he said at this point, we cannot help you." If anyone knows the answer, please reply to [email protected] Thanks!

  • When looking for a document, there used to be a "Today" tab on the left side of the Finder window. After updating my computer with the most recent update (I think it was Mountain Lion, but I could be wrong...), the "Today" tab seems to have disappeared.

I really prefer using the "Today" tab instead of the "All My Files" tab, because it loads much faster and only shows me the documents that I want to see. Is there any possible way to get the "Today" tab back?

In Finder, go command - F. On the top left set "Kind" to Date Created, finish selecting the criteria and hot "Save" on the top right. You'll get a new smart folder with an option to add it to the sidebar.

  • [SOLVED] impossible to boot (UEFI-grub2) after update

    Hi,
problem : after update my computer refuses to boot. It doesn't get to the grub2 (actually 1.99) menu, it just says : no boot device found.
My hardware : Asus M8Z77-V LX motherboard with 1 SSD.
In the bios I disabled the bios legacy option to force it to boot with UEFI.
As I hadn't moved to systemd yet, I waited to update a while(2 months).
Last week I updated several pacakges by hand (kernel, vlc, ...) : All updates that according to me didn't involve with systemd.
Then I rebooted and ... problem.
I have tried a whole weekend to solve it by browsing through the wiki's but to no avail.
I can boot with live-cd and access my SSD. All data is there. I can also chroot and do stuff.
The SSD is partitionned in GPT as follows :
    sda1 : 1 gb fat 32
    sda2 : 20 gb ext4 root
    sda3 : 20 gb ext4 var
    sda4 : 79 gb ext4 home
I did not do any update of my bios or changed anything on my hardware.
It seems that my bios does not see my SSD as UEFI-bootable device anymore.
When I installed Arch in June on my brand new computer I made a backup with redobackup (partclone) of a working installation.
As a final ressort I put back the image I created then.
    But it doesn't work either!
Then I updated my bios but same problem.
My bios can see the fat 32 partition. I know this because to update the bios it looks for attached fat 32 storage and there is shows the partition .
I there anywone who can point me in a good direction?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

I am sorry if I lost your confidence. I can't find any contradictory info in my post.
The Arch Wiki-Grub 2 says that you need to boot in UEFI before you can (re)install grub2.
As my live-cd won't boot in UEFI mode, the only option is that I make a live-usb stick and see if that one will boot in UEFI.
But in the end it is still strange that a software update breaks my Asus UEFI-boot.
I just found another unlucky guy with a simular problem. I'll try his solution tonight.

I will try the live-usb method and report on it later.

Sorry about that, yes, 10.5 and 10.6 on Intel can run Firefox 4.
Here's the process to roll back:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
You could install Firefox 3.6 over Firefox 4 (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!
