After updating to Yosemite, MacBook Pro freezes every 5 seconds and is unusable.

Macbook pro was working perfectly fine for first day after update, but after a day it freezes and shows the rainbow wheel every 5 seconds so that I can't even use it. I've noticed when it logs in and I have two options of my accnt and guest, then when I put in my password it takes a while to load with a status bar. Then it will freeze after log in.

I have dropped my Macbook once about 5 months ago
Apparently, you suffered internal damage which is now showing up.
What do I do?
Take your MBP to your local AS or an AASP.
If I take it to the Apple store, it will fix things obviously, but will I be charged or what..?
YUP!  No warranty & no AC.

  • My macbook pro freezes every few seconds

    Hi everyone!
About a week ago my MBP started freezing every few seconds showing the well known spinning beach balls every time, even when running no apps, I've sepnt plenty of time looking for a solution, I've read this problem might be due to a physically damaged hard drive, bt I've tested it several times using different apps and it shows no error, I've read from another discussion about Etrecheck as a useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem, so I hope some of you guys can help me checking the log output. Here it is:

  • MacBook Pro freezes every few seconds

    Hi All,
My two year old MacBook Pro started freezing randomly one day. It happens with any application that I have open (Safari, Word, Finder), I get the beach ball every few seconds for any operation I try doing. When the cursor comes back I have seen spikes of CPU usage and the relevant program also shows as 'Not Responding'.
I have tried everything, PRAM/SMC resetting, hardware test, disk repair etc. The latest being a clean install of Mavercks. It was fine for a few hours until it started freezing again like before. I made sure not to install much and didn't even copy my backup over yet.  Here is my EtreCheck output, can someone please HELP!!

  • Macbook pro freezes every few seconds. replaced the HDD, ram, logic board. to no avail. any ideas?

i have a late 2008 macbook pro. it freezes-up (more like slows down) for just a moment every 5 seconds or so. the problem has been there since i originally purchased it, but due to school, i never got around to fixing it til now. i've taken it in to apple several times (6 or 7). this last time i was there, they replaced the logic board, harddrive, and ram, and even the screen (for hot spots, unrelated). but no success. it hasn't gotten any better at all, and now, in addition to all that, the screen blacks out occasionally too.
does anyone have any idea what's happening here? where else could the problem be?

  • Any ideas? In the history may iPad never crashed but after updating to iOS 5 it crashed every 30 minutes, and browsing is very slow

Any ideas? In the history may iPad never crashed but after updating to iOS 5 it crashed every 30 minutes, and browsing is very slowAny ideas? In the history may iPad never crashed but after updating to iOS 5 it crashed every 30 minutes, and browsing is very slow

I found the reason why our iPads are slow after iOS 5!!!!!!!
What you need to do is this:
    1) launch settings, go to mail contacts and calendars, go to fetch new data, advanced, and set iCloud to fetch.
    2) go back and set an interval of when to fetch. Mine is set for thirty minutes.
    3) make sure on top push is still on, that means that all your emails will still be pushed, but all the iCloud sync (contacts, calendars, reminders, bookmarks) will happen at the interval you choose.
Restart the device. Your performance should be 10x faster! No more keyboard lag, nothing! Doing this puts less stress on the A4 chip, which we know we need every bit we can get with it now!!!
    Optional:
    1) in the settings, go to safari.
    2) clear all history and cookies/data
    3) enable private browsing. One of the biggest reasons why devices are slow is because it keeps all the history and cookies in the RAM. You need more RAM to make things faster. By turning on private browsing, it never records it!

  • MacBook Pro freezes during start up and safe boot

MacBook Pro freezes during start up and will not start in safe boot in recovery, it goes back to apple screen with spinning gear

    Stinkster,
does your MacBook Pro have a removable battery? If so, then it originally came with grey installation DVDs. If it doesn’t have a removable battery, look on the bottom of your MacBook Pro for its serial number (it’s etched there in tiny print). If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three of them; if it has twelve, write down the last four. Include the three or four characters in your reply; they can determine which model MacBook Pro you have, and the model will determine whether it originally came with grey installation DVDs or not.
If your MacBook Pro did originally come with grey installation DVDs, then you’re going to need to find them (or buy a replacement pair from Apple or iFixit) to reïnstall Mac OS X on your current hard drive, or to install it on a replacement hard drive.

  • Macbook Pro Freezes with Screen Distortion and other problems...

So I've had my 13' Macbook Pro for about 9 months and I am encountering problems with it. My Macbook would sometimes freeze at random and the screen would distort as well, also, the screen would react whenever I would move the laptop around by either reverting back to a normal screen (still frozen) or more distortion which leads me to believe that it might have something to do with the hardware. But all this is temporarily solved when I force shut off my laptop (hold the power button for 3 seconds) and restart it. It can start up again with no problem, but this happens again, more early than usual and becomes more consatnt. However this is lessened whenever I don't use my laptop for an extended amount of time, but it does happens again whenever I do use it for some time.
Another problem I've been encountering is that, at times after I force shut off the laptop, my computer would not turn back on. Instead, the laptop beeps 3 times, pause, then beep 3 times again. I have looked into this and discovered that this means that I have "No Good Banks"..........I have no idea what this means but I guess it means that I might have faulty RAM.
What I ask is that if anyone has had similar problems and if they know what to do or what exactly what the problem is so that I might be able to do something about it.
    Info about Macbook:
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1600 Mhz DDR3

Bump. Anyone have any ideas on this?
I "shut it off" last night, but when I turned it on again tomorrow, it turned out it didn't quite shut down?
It booted to the grey log-in screen, basically.
I've also come to the realisation that my charger isn't registered (the LED isn't orange/green like it usually is), and I can't get a "battery status" (I'm sure it has another name, I just don't know what it is) when I click on the little button on the left hand side of the laptop. Usually, it would show green dots/LEDS to tell me how far along it's charged, but now I get nothing.
I get the distinct feeling something's up with my battery, and maybe my RAM (because of the repeated triple beep after shutting down last night).

  • After updating to Yosemite, why will my windows in Safari and Microsoft Word close unexpectedly with no method of retrieval?

On two different occasions after updating to Yosemite this has happened. On the first occasion I had two documents open in Microsoft Word and after looking something up on Safari, attempted to go back to the two open documents. Microsoft Word was showing as open, but the documents were nowhere to be seen and I also could open nothing else and was forced to force quit without saving my work on those documents.
A similar thing occurred today with Safari. I had many tabs open in one window in Safari. I closed my laptop to move to another room, and upon opening my laptop again Safari was still open, but all my tabs of different research papers I had were gone. When I chose the "reopen all windows from last session" option, it reopened windows I had not had open for many days, and not the ones I had been working off that day.
This is extremely annoying and as a scientist, I was forced to once again look up the many papers I needed for a grant proposal that I had not yet copied down reference information for. Why is this happening?

I see you have used Clean My Mac. If you search these forums you will find that running apps like this can cause problems. Start with this link:

  • MacBook Pro freezes every 15 minutes after Mavericks upgrade

After upgrading to OS X 10.9.3 my computer freezes every 15 or so minutes in the middle of working.  The keyboard and touch pad stop working and the mouse curser disappears.  I'm using Ableton audio software and the audio will continue playing and looping normally but I loose any control to stop the audio or the program and I can not switch windows or even control volume.  The only way to stop it is to hold down the power button and reboot.  When restarting I tried pressing the command option +P +R through 3 whole sequences and still once I begin working again it freezes again.  This has never happened in the 5 or so years of owning this computer and everything worked great while using lion.  Only after installing the new upgrade of OSX did it start to do this.  Any help would be appreciated.  I live far away from any Mac store or Genius Bar.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Macbook Pro freezing every one hour

    Hello guys,
I did post this a couple of days ago, but since I got not a single answer, I'm kindly posting again too see if I get more luck this time, so, I hope any of you can help me with my problem, and thanks in advance:
I have a macbook pro, OS X 10.7.5, 2,3 GHz, two years old. Around a week ago, it started to systematically hang up. It happens as follows: It goes irresponsive, independentely from which applications I'm using at the moment. It does it gradually, so at the beginning I can still move the pointer, but as soon as I try to go to force quite, the spinning wheels appears, and soon it's all frozen, so I don't have any other option than restarting with the physical button.
Funnily, this happens every one hour. I went through other posts in the support community, and firstly, I was directed to check Terminal, finding out, right before the reboots, several messages which said that a thinning of the SSD unit was necessary, since there was less than 20% of the space free. I have cleaned up the unit, having now 34,7 GB out of 127,18 GB free (27%). I thought I had solve the problem, but no, it keeps on freezing the same. The messages do not appear anymore tho.
I checked the unit with Disk Utility, and a repair was recommended. I did a repair, by restarting and holding Ctrl+D, after which Disk Utility says the unit is alright. But it still freezes.
I reinstalled OS X 10.7.5, but that didn't help either.
The Console now shows these messages before the freezing happens:

  • Macbook Pro freezing on boot up and ran out of methods to fix it!

My Late 2011 Macbook pro has recently started acting up. Freezing on normally fine applications and bogging down to a hault. Now my macbook won't even start up. The progress bar is currently at about 50%, and that took about an hour. Its been running for 4 hours with no movement at all. It kept stopping at 50% every time I restarted it so I did some googling and tried to fix the issue.
Here is what I have done so far:
Verified and repaired the disk and permissions.
    Reset PRAM
Booted into single user mode and used the fsck -fy command
    Booted into Apple Hardware Test
** No problems reported by any of the above methods the hardware tested OK for all of above.
**I also tried to boot into safe mode, but it still got stuck on startup.
    Macbook Pro Specs:
    Model: Late 2011 13"
    Ram: 4GB
    HDD: 720GB
    Processor: Intel Dual Core i7
OSX: Yosemite (Not sure which version came on it when I bought it)
I even reinstalled OSX Yosemite and the problem still remains.
If there is anymore information you need that can help fix this issue, then please let me know.
If anyone can help me fix this problem I will greatly appreciate it.

Try running an Apple hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.
    Ciao.

  • My Macbook pro freezes for 30 seconds upon flipping it open to start up, why?

I have a Macbook pro (mid 2012) and I went to install Mavericks but my computer crashed horribly. I couldn't get any of the keyboard shortcuts to work so I had to take it and turns out some sort of driver kernal needed to be rebuilt by the local mac place. Now, when I flip the computer open to load it up, it freezes for about 30 seconds after the grey loading screen with the bar. My mouse and window to type in my password shows up, but the computer is completely unresponsive at this time. Any way to fix this? I used to be able to just flip my laptop open before the update and get right to using it, its my favorite part about my macbook pro, would like to regain this quickness.... Thanks

Are you running any applications when you open the lid, specifically any applications that are heavy on GPU usage such as iMovie or Photoshop?

  • My MacBook Pro freezes at random instances and then I can't shut it down

Product name: MacBook Pro 15 inch mid 2009
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Storage: Macintosh HD 500 GB
    Operating system: 10.9.5
Hi. The past two days I have started experiencing some problems with my macbook. It started while I was playing Football Manager with a dialog box coming up stating "could not access match data" or something like that, which caused my save game to not being able to be rewritten. I quit the game and tried to open Chrome but the icon jumped once and then it stopped without opening the browser. I tried to shut down my laptop but no dialog box came up and nothing happened. I relaunched finder but it didn't fix the problem so I was forced to shut down my laptop by holding on the power button. After that my laptop and the applications were working fine and I thought it was a problem created by the game. However, later on in the day, and while I was browsing on chrome I got an "Aw snap" message and chrome stopped working. I quit chrome, tried to relaunch it but the same thing with the icon happened and then I couldn't restart my laptop or shut it down or use any other application. After I force shut down my computer I downloaded the last update for my OS X, reinstalled Chrome, removed a lot of stuff from my HD leaving 120 GB free and thought that that would solve the issues. But it didn't. Twice more chrome froze and once more Football Manager leading to the same issues. I can't see what I am doing to cause this, and it seems that it started happening out of the blue. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me identify the problem and ultimately fix it. Let me know if you require more info.

I don't know if we are experiencing the same problem, but this is what I did and it seemed to work for me so far.
Before anything I had to hard restart my laptop. hold power button until off then turn back on.
In Finder click on Go, then click Go to Folder.  in the dialogue box type
    /var/db/crls
In that folder there are two files that you need to move to the trash
    crlcache.db
    ocspcache.db
You will need to type in your password to move these to the trash.
Restart your computer and then Empty the Trash.  It is very important that you empty the trash afterwards.  I forgot to do this the first time and I had to restart the whole process.  It has been a few days and I have been without any problems.
I am not claiming this process to be my own, I found it on another discussion thread and it worked for me. I don't have a link to it because I had to use someone else's computer and had no luck trying to find it again. This is the procedure I followed, I do remember it well and I wrote down the steps because I had to do it twice and got tired of combing through all of the websites I have searched looking for a fix to my problem.  Hopefully this helps, and try it at your own risk of course.
Let me know if you try it and it works or not, good luck.

  • Macbook Pro "freezes" on Start up and Beeps - HELP!

I have a brand new Macbook Pro (Christmas 2011), and today it was installing updates. It stated that it needed to restart to complete the updates, so I confirmed it. It shut down fine, but then didn't start up again on it's own. I waited for about an hour before manually starting the computer by pressing the power button. It did the opening chime and then the logo screen came up, but then it started a series of beeps (beep, beep, beep-------beep, beep, beep-------beep, beep, beep, etc.) along with accompying blinking bqattery light (it is fully charged). It froze on the logo screen and continued to beep for a half an hour before I forced it to shut down (control+command+power button). I tried restarting it in safe mode (holding the shift button down during startup), but it only resulted in the computer freezing on the logo screen for about five minutes before shutting itself off (no beeping or light that time, though). I went through my instruction manual as well as online searches to see if maybe I could somehow restore the computer to factory settings and I CAN get it to get into the Disk Utility section (holding down the option button during startup), but I'm absolutely terrified of erasing something I shouldn't, or have it all be for naught.
So, what's my best bet here? Is there a way I can fix this, at home and safely, or should I get my warrantee out and take it back to the store (Best Buy) and let them try to fix it?
    Desperate for help,
    Vanessa

It is better to take the MBP back to the store. They may be able to help you.
    Best.

  • After updating to Yosemite some of my photos will open and then Ill get a black screen with an apostrophe.  How can I fix this?

After updating my OS to Yosemite 10.10.1 some of my photos will not display.  All of the previews will be there but when I click to open them they open up larger for a second and then the screen goes black and I get a grey apostrophe sign.  I updated iPhoto to 9.6 (910.29) and also repaired my permissions.  The problem still exists.  Can anyone help me?  I also have issues with iTunes but that's another story.

According to the link I provided it could still have its logging service running.  Did you read the info in the link I provided?  You can check it by launching Activity Monitor and under CPU search for cleanup.
Since the photos are in the library I don't see the need at this time to reinstall iPhoto.  Maybe later.  Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
