After upgrading to 7.6.1, drive letter changed - can't restore

After upgrading iTunes to version 7.6.1 on my Vista, none of the files could be played, giving me a "file not found". The music is still in the same old folder on my M-drive. Though, in the iTunes library file, the drive somehow was set to F, my DVD-drive.
I have tried consolidating, set/reset drive in settings, edit the library xml-file, but it still insist that my music is on the DVD. How can I restore the library without having to import all the music again?

Found the solution. I had to move the library.xml out of the iTunes folder, find and replace all the entries of the wrong drive letter, and the import the XML to iTunes, making it a new library xml file. This makes all the song tagged as imported today, else everything seems to be fine.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

If this doesn't resolve it you most likely have a hardware failure. Fortunately, your phone is in warranty, so if you take it to an Apple store they will replace it.

Mac OS no longer available after trying to remove Windows on Bootcamp. How can I restore Mac OS without the Mac HDD in options?
So what I did was, I had bought my iMac from a shop and asked them to do bootcamp for me. However, they installed 32 bit instead of 64. My fault, I did not make my self clear about it. So after it has been delivered to my house, I realized that I wanted the 64 bit. I tried to remove windows on bootcamp but honestly, I have not experienced this before. So I failed. I believe, I did something wrong.
So I opened the iMac and it keeps asking me to go to windows. Windows OS also corrupted.
I tried the Option Key but the only option is Windows 7 only. So using a different keyboard, I press option and it only shows Windows HDD and the Mac HDD has gone.
What am I going to do? How can I restore Mac OS without the HDD anymore?

  • CD-ROM drive letter changed to the next available letter after an issue with the Storage appliance.

    Server platform:Windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
Last time we experienced an issue with the storage device we are using to  attach a disk to our server 2008 (virtual). This storage device is also providing storage to the ESX where the server 2008 is hosted.
The drive configuration in the server was:
    System C:\
    Tools D:\
    Apps E:\
    CD-ROM F:\
Some hours after the storage appliance issue, we realized the Application on the server was not working and then we restarted the server. After restarting the server we went to the file explorer and realized that the Apps volume had the drive letter F and
the CD-ROM had the E letter assigned.
I assume windows lost the Apps disk due to the SAN disconnection. Maybe the CD-ROM was also disconnected and when the Storage appliance was connected again the CD-ROM acquire the next drive letter it found, which was the letter E:. Then the Apps disk was
also discovered by Windows and it assigned the next available letter, F:.
I was looking for some MS knowledge base to see how Windows 2008 server assigns the letter to the CD-ROM and how we can permanently fix the letter assigned to the disks and the CD-ROM so that this issue won't happen again. As you know many applications use
the path including the drive letter.
I thought that when you set a CD-ROM drive letter, it remains forever as is, and that in case of a SAN disconnection Windows assigns the same letter the drive had before the disconnection.
Please advice if you have some documentation about this. And let me know if you have any thoughts about what really happened to prevent this in the future.
    Thank you guys!!

Hi, for the APP's drive it could had been assigned a new letter if the system did seen it as a new disk/partition.
The partition was on your esx's LUN on the SAN ? (not an iSCSI connection from inside a VM?)

  • Continuously in recovery mode, after several restores, drive letter changes

My ipod/itunes usage has been acting very odd for the last week. iTunes stopped being able to add songs to the ipod a couple days ago, then it stopped recognizing the ipod and itunes (newest version, 7.0.1.8) would crash. So I uninstalled itunes, all my previous ipod software, hoping to start from scratch. Downloaded itunes again, rebooted Windows (XP), installed itunes, hooked up the ipod, same problem.
So I restored my ipod, and afterwards I got this message: "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." So I restored it again, and the same message appeared. This cycle happened a few times before I went online to find a solution.
In the support pages, I saw that if this happens, I should change the drive letter that Windows assigns the ipod (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499#changedrive), so I did that to change the ipod from the E drive to the G drive. No difference, itunes still didn't like it. I restore it again, and I get the same message, about the ipod being in recovery mode and that i should restore it. So I tried to change the drive letter another time. Same thing. No change.
    What do I do now?
5th gen ipod with video   Windows XP

I connected my 30 gig, 5th gen. iPod to my computer,
and it recognized it. I clicked on 'check for
update', of which there was one, ironically described
as "bug fixes". After the update, my iPod restarted
itself and is now in recovery mode. However, when I
look under 'My Computer', it still recognizes my iPod
by the name I gave it, and all of my photos are still
intact and viewable in this mode. I have tried
changing the drive letter and reinstalling iTunes,
but both my iPod and iTunes are still giving me the
    recovery mode message.

Funny you should say that, and i'm so glad that i looked in here, as i first thought that it was something that i had done wrong, but now i am starting to wonder.
I have a similar problem with the 30gb ipod, i loaded everything ok onto my computer, even got to put some music on my ipod!
the next day i decided to re-arrange some tracks and remove some music that i no longer listen to. at this point I also recieved the update called "bug fixes" and since then the actual ipod says to connect to my computer and use itunes to restore, I have done this, and itunes goes through the process of restoring, says it has finished, and as soon as the ipod icon re-appears, it says that my ipod is in recovery mode and i need to restore.
I have done this now about 20 times, and i have tried various procedures that have been suggested on the web page, which includes removing and re-installing itunes, assign a new drive letter to the ipod, reinstalling the drivers.
I have tried everything that i can find with any relevance, but as i am not an IT technician, i dont want to keep trying things that i don't really understand.
Please help, as I want to listen to my music on this expensive music player, like i should be able to!
    thanks in advance

  • Unable to burn in iTunes, due to drive letter change

Hello, I would like to be able to burn an audio CD through iTunes, but I am unable to change the drive letter assignment in iTunes since modifying my computer. When I first had iTunes installed, my burner was recognized as the D: drive. I have since upgraded and modified my computer, and iTunes has not adapted to recognize that my burner is now the E: drive.
I have looked through everything I can think of to change this through the preferences, but there is no place where I can modify it. Can anyone explain to me how to get iTunes to update the new burner drive letter assignment? I can't believe that Apple would limit/restrict the ability for the user to change something as essential as this.

Katrina, thank you for your reply. It was helpful, but isn't the solution that I am looking for. I don't want to change the burner drive letter assignment for Windows, what I want to do is to simply change iTunes recognition of what the drive letter is. I am familiar with how to alter Windows drive letter assignment for hard drives and optical drives, and this would probably work if I were to do it, however it would require that I do a lot of application reassignment as well, as I have installed many programs and applications on this other drive. There are many programs and applications out there that provide the user with the capability of telling the program where the burner is, but for some reason Apple does not seem to think that this would be beneficial to users, even though there are many who are knowledgeable enough to add a new hard drive or optical drive (burner) which renders iTunes burning capability unusable after installation of the new hardware. I'm sure that they did it intentionally so that the average user would not mess up their computer or iTunes, but for those of us who are computer literate this ends up causing us a great deal of grief. I'm just hoping that there might be someone out there who has more knowledge on the configuration of iTunes and would know how to force iTunes to look at a different drive letter for the burner over the drive letter that it originally recognized when it was first installed.

  • After upgrading to itunes 7.3.1.3 I can't run the backup to dics anymore.

After upgradeing to itunes 7.3.1.3.1 I can not run the backup any more. Also the CD burning runs very slow.
The DVD burner run ok with other software.
After it checks for file to be backed up it kept ejecting the blank DVD and asking for a blank disc.
I have even replaced the DVD drive with drive from another computer.I also reinstalled ITUNES once-- It ran as a repair during the install.

I have used this same DVD Burner to backup my list from within iTunes before. I did this back in June just after I purchase 30 songs. I think I was running version 7.1 or 7.2 when the DVD backup worked. If not sopport then why does their diagnostics say DVD/CD Diagnostics. Even so I have the same problem on my other PC with a CD Burner. I think Apple support sound a little like Microsoft. I once had a problem with Windows NT and had to call MS support 5 times before they said their software had a defect and issued a patch.

  • How do I get Lightroom to find photos on a USB Drive when the Drive letter changes?

THis is probably a simple question but I keep getting stuck.  I ha
ve my catalog and some images on my laptop hard drive, but the majority are on
an external USB drive.  Sometoimes the drive gets assigned
E:, F;, or G:, and when it cahnges, the catalog says the phots are missing.  How do I get
Lightroom to find the photos again?
    Tom Barnwell

The quick fix is to click on the folder containing the missing files and choose "update Folder Location" then find the folder on the USB drive. The longer term and fix you should apply is to set Windows to always give the USB the same drive letter. You can do this through the XP Disk Management application in Computer Management (Control Panel applet). The following screenshot is for XP, but Vista and Win 7 will something similar which can be accessed via Administrative Tools (see second screenshot).

  • After upgrade on OS and Safari 7.1 I can no longer do 2 finger scrolling.  Anyone else find this bug in upgrade?

After upgrade to 10.95 OS and Safari 7.1 I can no longer do 2 finger scrolling.  Anyone else find this bug in upgrade?  If so, ideas on how to fix it?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • ITunes can't see my songs. Drive Letter Change.

I have over 10,000 songs in my iTunes library.  They all have a path that originates from my drive L.  This is my external hard drive.  The drive was shut off, as it has been many times in the past, and when it was turned back on, it was all of a sudden drive M.
Now iTunes cannot find anything in my library.  I tried the Disk Manager in Win7 to reassign the drives letter back to L but it won't let me do it because the final step is to pick the drive's new letter assignment from a drop down menu, and "L" is not available.
Can anyone help me with this.  Is my iTunes simply just useless from here on out.  I'm not deleteing it and starting over again just so the drive letters can switch again.
    thank you for any help.

The problem fixed itself -- somewhat. Now, iTunes sees audio CDs. But when I eject them, iTunes doesn't notice. I generally have to open & close the CD tray 2-4 times to get iTunes to notice that I have switched CDs. This is an iTunes problem, not Windows or my Plextor -- only iTunes has any issue with CDs being inserted or switched.
