After upgrading to Firefox it now starts in safe mode and none of the options make any difference. What is wrong and how do I fix it?

A few weeks ago, I updated to a newer Firefox (I can't figure out how to find the version) and now FF starts in safe mode with a list of change options. None of them change anything. What do I do?

I've used Firefox for 5 years, and the crashing now is the worst it's ever been. I hope they get a fix soon, I've just reverted to Chrome... ARGH

• After upgrading to Firefox 4.0.1, it no longer will open external links - anything from emails, IMs, databases won't open - how can I fix this?

No links from external programs will open - this is usually kind of ok since I can cut and paste, but some links from databases don't provide copy-able links, meaning I cannot access information via Firefox.

Hi BladedxRayne,
You should look at the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved].
Hopefully this helps!

• Downloaded Firefox yesterday. Every time I open the Firefox browser, it starts in Safe Mode even though I have shut down and restarted my computer several times

I have Windows OS. I downloaded Firefox yesterday. Every time I open the Firefox browser, it starts in safe mode. I have restarted my machine several times -- Firefox still starts in Safe Mode. My favorites from IE copied to Firefox fine, and Firefox is now my default browser...it just keeps opening in Safe Mode.

I downloaded the toolbar. When I was done using the computer, I put it to "sleep." The next time I "woke" the computer and went to Firefox, the toolbar was gone. When I downloaded the toolbar again, I got a box in the upper left hand corner of the screen stating Firefox BLOCKED the toolbar, and did I want to allow it. There was NO option to allow always-it's just a one time deal. When I shut down for the day, I expected it to remain, but no-next time I fired up firefox, NO TOOLBAR. I pulled up Inbox dollars again, clicked on download toolbar, got the box stating it's blocking the toolbar, etc, etc, etc. Unless Firefox upgrades daily, or in some cases, several times in one day, I'm going to stick with my description that the toolbar magically disappears EVERY TIME I OPEN
FIREFOX!!!
I don't profess to be any type of computer whiz, I'm totally self-taught, and it's not beyond the realm of possibility that I'm doing something wrong. I've been using Firefox for about a week, so I'd welcome any help!

Figuring out the cause of a crash can be difficult. If you've tried the steps above and can't get Firefox to stop crashing, the steps below will show you how to collect information about your crash so our volunteers can help you.
1. In the Firefox Location bar, type about:crashes and hit Enter. A page listing submitted crash reports will appear. '''NO START so no Firefox Location bar'''
2. Right-click on the latest crash under Report ID and choose Open Link in New Tab. '''NO START so NO Firefox Report ID and not possible to choose Open Link in New Tab'''.
A tab will open to a page on crash-stats.mozilla.com, saying that "Your report is being processed". When it is finished processing, your report will load. '''NO START so NO Firefox Report ID and NO report will load so dead end and no help or support possible'''

Hi Max,
Congratulations, at least you made a stab at solving the problem. I think a lot of users used to glance at that KB article ([[firefox crashes]]) and give up trying!
Hopefully the crash instructions will be further modified soon, (some of us consider the following is an [/kb/Firefox%20crashes/discuss/1855 omission] that needs correcting) have a look at this article for an explanation of how to get the crash ID from your OS even without using firefox:
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports
The XP OS is likely to use smoke and mirrors to make it look like you have a totally
separate installation of firefox for each account, but normally you have the one set of (most) program files, and then for firefox separate [[profiles]]. So this indicates the problem is likely to be in the profile of the problem account, or down to a plugin, malware or other issue relating to that account.
(I note you have already scanned for malware with MSE, that should detect a particular trojan that is a top cause of firefox 6 crashes)
If you create a new clean profile in that account hopefully it will solve the crash problem, you can then address the issue of copying settings, bookmarks. passwords etc back. BUT before attempting that ensure that you disable all plugins, ([[safe mode]] does not disable plugins) if you have not already done so. Some plugins may not show up in Firefox's list, you may need to look at the OS program lists.
I note you mention banking, a particular utility ''IDvault'' (I think Comcast supply it) has been causing crashes. Are you using IDvault ?
(IDvault should be fixed soon bug684748; version 1.0.627 may have been fixed, but standalone version 5.9.627 has not yet been fixed )

The upgrade I'm interested is for OS X v.10.8.5...
...The App Store page shows 2 different upgrades:
Mountain Lion (10.8.5) Software Upgrade, and
Yosemite FREE upgrade
If the App Store is showing 10.8.5 as an update, what do you currently have installed? The final update to Mountain Lion was 10.8.5, and since the basic OS installation of Mountain Lion is no longer offered in the App Store, that would suggest you're currently at an earlier version of Mountain Lion - 10.8.x where x=less than 5. If that's the case, I'd suggest getting the 10.8.5 update. There is also a Supplemental Update for 10.8.5 and that may be what the App Store is offering.

My 10.8.3 update did not install properly citing an 'Unknown Error'. Now, my Mail and Mac App Store aren't working. What went wrong and how do i fix it ?

I tried this and still have the same problems. If I open Address book or the Mac App Store I get the library rebuild popup and a hang. I created a fresh user and then things are better apart from the printing issue. Its clearly some 3rd party software issue but the crash logs are meningless to me. I used the excellent Etre check app from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck so I have a list of what is being loaded and can compare clean and crashed user info but as I cant work out which of the startup items, launch agents, launch daemons etc that are causing the problem.
I have eliminated Dropbox, Mac Keeper and Witness, and it isnt related to my exterrnal LED cinema dispay or my external thunderbolt drives, or any USB devices if thats any help to anyone else. Info from Etrecheck follows -

My MacBook Pro doesn't start; in safe mode <shift CMD V> the message "disk0s2: media is not present" is written on the screen repeatedly but the MacBook doesn't start. Do you have any ideas of why this should be or what I should do to resolve this? Thanks Eamonn

Thanks for these suggestions: I have tried safe mode re-starts (both "verbose" and simple "shift" + power) to no avail. I get the error message "disk0s2: media is not present". Following this I inserted the installation disc and from there ran disc utility. The "Verify Disk" indicated an error " invalid sibling link" which it could not repair.
I also tried to completely re-format/erase the disk, but again got an error message "disk object invalid or unable to serialize".
Any ideas of what could be causing this or the best solution? I fear I am fast running out of options.

Hi,
thank you for your help.

I tried the "Save as" option and the same problem happened.

The problem of web sites failing to open by using links in e mail for LA Times and Coldwater Creek was not resolved by starting in safe mode.

• After upgrading to firefox 8, my extensions list is empty (about:addons), though the extensions are still operating.

1. Updated to firefox 8.
2. Visited about:addons.
3. When looking at the 'extensions' tab, I see a message that reads "You don't have any add-ons of this type installed."
Of course, the above statement isn't true ... I have many add-ons installed and as far as I can tell, all are working as usual. I see the same message on the appearance tab, but I can't recall if I had anything appearing in that tab previously. The plugins tab is populated as normal.
I'm using windows 7 and I upgraded from 7.01 (I believe).

I have 3 desktops on which I used Firefox. Upgrading 2 of 3 matched the experience described in the original question and for those, silkphoenix's answer is correct - a restart is required. While it all worked out in the end, I have to say, the experience was poor, and I hope it was a bug, rather than an intentional design decision. My initial run offered no hint as to what was happening. Even after restarting, I had to sort through separate tabs - 1 per installed extension - to make a keep/discard decision. And it only offered such choices for about half of my installed extensions. For the other half, I had to go back into about:addons to manually enable.
For the 3rd of 3 installations, I had a much better experience - on first run, post upgrade, I was offered a window in which I could check/uncheck the extensions I wanted to approve. End of story.
I'm still not sure why installing the same version offered such different experiences.

• After upgrading to Firefox 10.0.2 there is no way to proceed to a website with an invalid security certificate. How do you proceed to these websites in the new release? The fault page only has a button that says "Try again."

Using Firefox 10.0.2 for Mac.
In trying to proceed to various websites (corporate such as dlnet.delta.com (expired certificate), government such as https://www.homeport.navy.mil/links/owa-navy-links/ ) with "invalid" security certificates, Firefox 10.0.2 does not have a button on the error page to continue on to the website. How can you do this using Firefox 10.0.2? I have not found any settings in Firefox preferences to enable this capability either.
Thx.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
