After upgrading to iTunes 7.1, the iPod won't sync

When I first upgraded, I got an error message that it didn't recognize my ipod, so i agreed to restore to factory settings.
But when I try to sync now that I've upgraded and restored, the iTunes freezes about 10 or 20 songs into the syncing process.

When iTunes attempts to sync photos from iPhoto, it shows the amount of the iPod drive taken up with photos, BUT NO usage on the drive graph itself.
When Sync Photos from iPhoto is deselected and another sync attempted, iTunes asks if photos should be removed from iPod, despite the previous sync being unsuccessful. When I choose to remove the photos, the amount shown taken up by photos disappears.
Does anyone know what the error message quoted in my question above means?

  • 6th Gen/osx10.7/iTunes 11.0 'The ipod cannot be synced because it cannot  be found.'

    Hi,
I sure do hope someone has some great ideas here - because I'm stumped.  I'm trying to sync up my husband's ipod.  Gee whiz - who knew it would be so difficult.
    Products:
I have a 6th Gen. ipod, syncing to a Macbook Pro using OS X 10.7 on iTunes 11.0.1.  I have been successfully syncing this ipod for a few years now with no trouble - mostly music & photos.
I updated iTunes to the latest version 11.0.1 and synced the ipod.  (It should be noted that I had such a screwed up library from iTunes that I deleted the entire library and reloaded it and regenerate playlists, etc..  I was able to sync up about 1,100 songs to the ipod with no problems and only used up about 6GB of space out of a total of 16GB.)
    Issue:
The trouble began when I tried to upload additional music and I received the following error... 'the ipod cannot be synced because it cannot be found'.  Which is weird since my Mac & iTunes both 'saw' the device and I was able to view uploaded content 'on this ipod' in iTunes.  It doesn't matter how much data, or what kind of data I'm trying to sync - I get the same error message.
The device reads, ''Connected - Eject before disconnecting'.  So I tried to eject the from iTunes, which shows it's disconnected there - but the icon remains on my desktop and still shows it's connected on the device.  Then I tried ejecting from my desktop - no change.  The only way to remove the device is to completely MANUALLY shut down my laptop (it hangs when I try to relaunch Finder, restart or shut down within OS).
    Troubleshooting Conducted:
I have restarted and reset the device - problem persists.  Device is fully charged.  Has the latest OS.  USB ports are operating without issue with other peripherals (external HDDs/speakers).  This does not appear to be a hardware issue (laptop and device) since both appear to be functioning properly (the device with existing content and the laptop with everything else.)
I've searched through Apple's support pages as well as community discussions and was unable to really find anything similar - please forgive me if I've overlooked something.  I'm happy to go to existing solutions.
Also of note - both my son's and my iPhones have synced with this version of iTunes remotely without any problems.
Hope I've given enough info.  I hope even more that someone may have a solution for me.
    Thank you for your time.

Have you looked at the previous discussions listed on the right side of this page under the heading "More Like This"?

  • After updating to 8.1.2 my iPod won't sync and all artwork is missing

Has anyone else experienced this - updated to 8.1.2 this weekend, now iPod (5th gen) won't sync with iTunes on PC (skips straight to Step 4 without doing anything).  All my music artwork is now missing too?

Correct sync settings are verified. Not sure why I should need to back up and restore - it synced fine before the "upgrade" to 8.1.2. Obviously I can reset/restore when I have time to do so, and hopefully that might work, but why have Apple released an upgrade that made my device unfunctional?

  • After upgrade to iTunes 11.1.4 - no longer see/sync with iPhone 4

recently upgrade iTunes to 11.1.4 - but can no longer sync iPhone 4.  Use Windows 8.   The phone is still viewable on MS files - and can access iPhone directories (ie photos).   Other Apple devises (iPod) have not been affected -- they appear and sync fine

Hi Lyssa! Many thanks for your answer!
I had my suspicions about something like that. Apparently Apple wants to have FULL CONTROL of its users lives. I have been using Apple products since the late 80’s and I, so far, still do.
I find it a bit funny but mostly stupid that Apple has removed the syncing function between iPhone and Mac. So, even if you are a ’loyal’ Apple user, you now have to publish your whole life on iCloud if you want to copy your calendar and contacts to your OWN iPhone from your computer/vice versa, because that is what this is all about. Otherwise, you can’t sync between the iPhone and your computer, even if you are loyal to Apple, using both their laptop and their phone.
I do not want to do that and therefore I now have decided to leave the Apple platform for good. So, next time I choose a computer, a phone etc, it will not be an Apple product. Goodbye Apple!
Many thanks again, Lyssa. Have a nice day!

  • Address book and calendar not synchronized after upgrade to iTunes 11.0

    Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    iPhone 4
After upgrading to iTunes 11.0, the address book and iCal do not synchronize between iPhone and  iMac.
I have already restarted both devices in vain.
    Thanks for help

I have only the problem with iCal, not with the contact application.
I don't know when it started but I have iTunes 11.0.1 (12) and iOS 6.1 on my iPhone 4
The modification on my iPhone calendar are not on my iMac, but the other way works.
It really looks like a bug !!!!!! :-(

  • IPod won't sync after computer reformatting

    Hi,
Ever since my computer crashed and I had to have it completely erased and OS X reinstalled, I've been having problems syncing my iPod with iTunes. I downloaded a software that allowed me to transfer the music from my iPod back into iTunes, but now the iPod does not sync with iTunes at all: new music I've put into iTunes, new playlists, etc.--none of them sync to the iPod. What can I do to fix this?

The first things to try are these basic troubleshooting steps.
    The Five Rs.
Any difference if you enable the iPod for iPod Disk Use.
If you put the iPod into manual and drag items from iTunes to iPod, still nothing happens?

    Hi iTunes-1,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The error message you posted indicates a possible firmware update is needed for iTunes for Windows to work with your CD drive.
iTunes for Windows: Updating the firmware on your CD or DVD drive - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201852
Having outdated firmware can cause issues using CDs and DVDs with iTunes for Windows. Firmware is a type of software stored in a chip in hardware that can sometimes be updated.Identifying drives and firmware versions
To run CD Diagnostics, follow the steps in this document.
After following the steps to run CD Diagnostics linked above, look at section three to find out more about your optical drive(s).
Here is an example of what section three might look like:
In this example there are two drives. Drive E is a Samsung DVD-ROM drive with a model designation of SD-616 that has firmware version F000. Drive F is an NEC drive with a model designation of NR-7900A that has firmware version 1.08.Updating the firmware
If the optical drive you are using came with your computer, check with the support site for your computer for a firmware update. Typically you will need to go to the support website for the computer maker and click on a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your computer model designation and operating system version to see what updates are available. Then look through the available updates for a firmware update for your optical drive. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of your computer.
If the optical drive you are using came as a separate part (was not included with a computer), check the support site for the drive maker for a firmware update. Sometimes the manufacturer is not clear in the CD Diagnostics results. In that case, you may just have to search the Internet for the drive model designation. You can usually find out who made the drive by looking through the results of such a search. Once you have identified who made your drive, go to the support website for that company. Look for a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your optical drive model designation. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of the optical drive.Verifying that the firmware was updated
    Run CD Diagnostics again.
Examine the CD Diagnostics results. The firmware version for the drive should be the new version.

Also, you mentioned that you have been successful burning a CD with the Windows OS.  Make sure that you have closed all software programs that can access the CD burner so that there isn't a conflict for the drive.   Sometimes chaning the burn speed from "maximum" to 8x can also help in this situation.
I hope this information helps ...

  • IPod Nano does not display songs after upgrading to iTunes 7.1 & SW1.3

After installing iTunes 7.1 on my WIN machine and connecting my iPod nano iTunes asked me about upgrading my iPod's firmware. After I did this all the songs on my iPod where gone. When I connect my iPod to iTunes I see that 3,8 GIG is still in use, which should be correct, and it states it is analyzing song for "gapless playback". However, my songs don't show up in iTunes, nor on the iPod. I rebooted the firmware on the iPod (menu+select) but no results.
    a) how to get my songs back to my iPod without going thru a factory reset?
    b) how to get rid of iTunes 7 and V. 6 back?
    Thank in advance.

Does it look like the song is playing at the top of iTunes? Can you see the timer moving?
Also, make sure the volume slider isn't all the way to the left (mute).

  • My iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation don´t show up anymore in iTunes after upgrade to iTunes 10.5 and MacOsX 10.6.8 Snow. What can I do??

I was using iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation together with iPod Shuffle 1st generation with inferior versions of iTunes and MacOS X without any problem. After I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6.8, the iPod Shuffle still appears in iTunes normally, but the iPods don´t appear. Its not a problem of the USB because because it happens with two different USB cables which worked just fine before. Any idea how I could get the iPods working again?? Thanks a lot!!!

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, MacOS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.5, and my iPod still works when I plug it in.
So it's not the software, because mine still works. Do your iPods have a lock on them? If so, try unlocking them and then plugging them in, usually when your iPod has a passcode lock it won't show up in iTunes until you unlock it.

  • Can't Recognized iPod device after upgrading to iTune 7 / 7.0.1

After upgrading to iTune 7 (and later 7.0.1), my iPod Video 60G (firmware 1.2) has been having problems getting recognized by my desktop.
    Symptoms:
    - Device manager in Windows 2000 reports the device as an Unknown USB Device
    - The iPod won't get recharged nor sync'ed.
    - The "Do not disconnect" screen won't appear on the iPod.
    - Since Windows can't recognize my iPod at all, of course I won't be able to see it in iTune.
I plugged the iPod to my Dell laptop and got it recognized and recharged properly though.
After poking around for a long time, I figured that if I disable the USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller on my desktop (thru the Device Manager), I can finally get the iPod recognized properly. Problem is, now it takes forever for me to sync my iPod (USB 2.0 disabled, so I'm stuck with the slow USB 1.1)...
I noticed that after upgrading to iTune 7, the display backlight on the iPod is kept on (though dim). If I remember correctly, on older versions of iTune, the backlight is completely off. I'm suspecting whether the extra current draw required by the dim backlight is screwing up my desktop USB....
Anybody from Apple gonna look into the issue and consider turning the backlight back to off in the next release??
      Windows 2000

I have no problems on my Dell laptop... I'm having problem with my 4-year old non-brand-name desktop only.
... which is kinda abnormally 'cause normally you would expect USB 2.0 power problems on laptops only. Btw, I've got the latest drivers installed already for the chipset and Win2K etc...
What's more interesting... is the fact that on older iPod firmware, everything was running just fine... upgrade to iTunes 7.0 and boom... I'm having problems. And, it's not recognized at the Windows USB device recognition level, so I think we can isolate the problem source to the iPod firmware upgrade.
Seriously... my bet is on the extra power drain from the backlight being left on during USB connection...
Guess i'll have to stick with slow USB until Apple has a new firmware...
This latest upgrade is generating a lot of unhappy customers...... and the sad thing is, Apple did a bad job in backward compatibility and made it extremely difficult to downgrade to an older version of iTune / firmware.... Apple better get these fixed asap...

  • Ipod not connecting after upgrade to itunes 8

After upgrading to itunes 8 my ipod (nano) will no longer connect to my computer and is not recognised by itunes. When I connect the ipod I get the windows 'install new hardware wizard' running but however I try to work through this I get nowhere. Looking at Device Manager in Windows says there are no drivers for the ipod - it has a little exclamation mark next to it.
My wifes brand new ipod will also not connect and its straight out of the box.
Not at all sure what to do next. The support pages don't seem to cover getting the install new hardware wizard. Any help or advice please!.

    Ben888
Having reported this to my dealer, and them agreeing to supply a new lead to try, I had one final attempt at resetting the iPod.
Having restored, reset and updated the iPod half a dozen times before without success, a reset as described here:
    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
worked and it is now merrily playing again in the car with the original lead.
It would seem that Apple have developed another piece of spectacularly temperamental equipment........and people slate Microsoft!
Hope it works for you as well!

  • After upgrading to itunes 10.5, and connecting ipad 2, message appears " IPAD cannot be used it requires itunes 10.5 or later. Go to itunes store and download the latest version." I am windows xp user.

After upgrading to Itunes 10.5 and connecting the IPAD. I get a following message. How do I resolve this issue. There is no other way to download itunes to ipad other than the itunes on your computer or laptop. I am a windows xp user.

    Dear Mr. Sawyer,
To my surprise, the version is shown as 10.0.1.22. I will uninstall itunes and try loading the same again. After uninstalling do we need to delete any registry entries for Windows XP.
Thanks for your response and concern.

  • After upgrading to itunes 7.3.1.3 I can't run the backup to dics anymore.

After upgradeing to itunes 7.3.1.3.1 I can not run the backup any more. Also the CD burning runs very slow.
The DVD burner run ok with other software.
After it checks for file to be backed up it kept ejecting the blank DVD and asking for a blank disc.
I have even replaced the DVD drive with drive from another computer.I also reinstalled ITUNES once-- It ran as a repair during the install.

I have used this same DVD Burner to backup my list from within iTunes before. I did this back in June just after I purchase 30 songs. I think I was running version 7.1 or 7.2 when the DVD backup worked. If not sopport then why does their diagnostics say DVD/CD Diagnostics. Even so I have the same problem on my other PC with a CD Burner. I think Apple support sound a little like Microsoft. I once had a problem with Windows NT and had to call MS support 5 times before they said their software had a defect and issued a patch.
