After upgrading to Lion, cannot delete trash

I have nearly 20,000 items in trash. Prior to upgrading to Lion, I was able to periodically empty trash can. It used to take a painful 4 hours, every week, but it used to get done. Now it seems hopeless. It just asks if secure delete is required, and as soon as I click on yes, it begins to delete, and then the box vanishes. Any clues please?

Select  ▹ Force Quit... from the menu bar, then select Finder and press return. From the Finder menu bar, select Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced and uncheck the box labeled Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash. If you still have problems, follow the instructions in this support article:
You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash

    Gotcha, Bingo, Bazinga!
Moving the antivirus to trash does not delete or disable some parts of the application.
How to remove the remaining parts of the application depends on the application as the different AV-Systems place there parts at different places and use different preference files.
At first check if the AV is still listed in the startup items (System Settings - Accounts - your account - startup items) and remove them from that list.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

  • Cannot eject USB HDD that is being used for Time Machine after upgrading to Lion

After upgrading to Lion from SL, I have had only one issue.  Amazing!  Great job Apple with making the process smooth, but my issue is this.  Ever since the upgrade, I cannot eject the external USB HDD that I use for Time Machine.  I get the following error:
The disk "Time Machine" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it.  To eject the disk immediately, click the Force Eject button.  There is the little spinning fan and the message "Trying to eject" and then the fan disappears and where it said, "To eject the disk immediately..." it now says "You can try to eject the disk again or click Force Eject to eject it immediately."  I can click Force Eject and it will work, but seems like there is an issue that needs to be addressed.  Any thoughts anyone?

Ok, I think there's a slightly better way, but try this:
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be very careful with this app.  It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this: <Computer Name>:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name).  It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy the following after the prompt:
              lsof |grep
and leave a space.  Then drag the Backups.backupdb folder on the TM drive from a Finder window into the Terminal window (Terminal will convert that into a "path").
    Press Return.
You should get a list of geeky stuff; but the first thing on the next line should be the process that's using the drive (Finder in the sample), followed by another prompt:

  • After upgrading to lion 10.7 I can no longer use my canoscan 9950f, why?

After upgrading to lion 10.7 my canoscan 9950f scanner is no longer recognized. Have I lost thye use of this scanner by going to 10.7?

Not likely. Make sure the scanner is still available in System Preferences > Print & Scan. You might have to delete the old scanner and add it again if your computer cannot "find" it.
Before you do that, and while you are in Print & Scan, see if  you can get it to scan by selecting the Scan tab.
In Lion, all scanning functions have been relegated to Preview, the Print & Scan preference pane, and Image Capture.

  • Problems with extrenal drive after upgrade to Lion

    Hello,
after upgrading to Lion last week I am experiencing some problems with my LaCie 1 TB FireWire (800) external drive.
The problem is not that big however. When I delete files on the external drive they do not appear in the Trash Bin.
However when I unmount and again mount the partitions using the Disk Utility the deleted files do appear in the
Trash Bin. The external drive has 3 partitions: 2 X Mac OS X Journaled and one FAT. The above described problem
appers on all partitions. I performed repair and verify to all partitions but Disk Utility says that everything is OK! Any idea ?
P.S. With Snow Leopard I have never experienced such problem.
    Thank you!

    DiskWarrior is on
    Step 5: Locating directory date...
Speed reduced by disk malfunction: 339,474, er make that 340,239, er make that 341,327....
should I stop it or keep going??!!!!

After upgrading to lion I can no longer print to the copier on our local network. Tried everything but did not work. Please help

If you just upgraded to Lion, you get 90 days of complimentary support, so don't be bashful.  Call 'em.  I called Apple support and they resolved this specific issue.  We first verified that a newly created Admin account could create and edit Address Book.  When it did, we rightly assumed corruption in the Address Book Library files.
Here are the steps from that point.
Back up your Address Book: From Address Book, choose File > Export and choose Export vCard to a desitnation of your choosing.
    Close Address Book.
From the Desktop, Hold Option and click Go in the menu at the top of the screen.
Choose Library.  If this is not an option, you are not pressing the Option key or you are not an Admin.
Expand the Application Support folder and drag the AddressBook folder to the Trash.  Close window.
Open Address Book and import your address book vCard.
Lion has changes that remind me of Windows 2000 where folders are hidden even to Admins.  Apple is purposefully hiding files and folders they don't think anyone should be seeing.  If you want Admin priviledges you had in Leopard or earlier versions, you need to upgrade to a Root user...highly not recommended.

  • After upgrading to Lion, preview will not print any documents. When selecting "Print" it just hangs with no show of the printing menu.

After upgrading to LION, preview refuses to print out documents to our Ricoh and Canon printers.  All other apps work fine with no problems.
Does anyone have similar experience or an answer to resolving this problems.

I had the same problem when attempting to print to my Canon ImageCLASS multifunction laser printer. Canon have acknowledged the problem by saying:
"Cannot print from Preview or TextEdit; causes applications to crash. For PDF documents, Canon recommends that the free version of Acrobat Reader is used."
    They go on to say:
"An updated driver for each model will be released as a permanent solution. The driver will be an official driver to support Mac OS X 10.7. The target release schedule is approximately three months after Lion is officially released."
    Source:
    http://www.canon.com.au/en-au/Support-Services/Support-News/Lion-Support
I've followed their advice and have been using Adobe Reader for viewing and printing PDFs. I'll revert back to the Preview app once the updated drivers become available.

After upgrading to lion, I can't see any TM backups, and I do not have access to this external harddrive.
In the TM backup, I can see all backups, but cant activate or use them.
When I click to the external HD, an error message says: "The folder "" cannot be opend, because you do not have permission..."
I tried to solve problem as Apple given on website, but didnot help.
    Thanks for help!

I had this same problem after I copied my TM backups from a 500GB TC to a larger external USB drive.
After some work, I finally was able to get the backups from the old TC to show up (in pink) on the new external drive, but still was unable to select/use the backups in pink.
After readings lots of the pondini posts, I saw some things that seem to get me access to the pink timeline items.
First, I read this post. At the beginning of it, it read...
Time Machine keeps the backups for each Mac separate, and normally only shows the ones for the Mac it's running on, even if there are other Macs' backups on the same disk/partition.
Also, sometimes Time Machine will start a new "sequence" of backups, as if they were from a different Mac.
To see these "other" backups, you need the Browse Other Backup Disks or (Browse Other Time Machine Disks) option.  It's available by Alt/Option-clicking the Time Machine icon in your Menubar, or by right-clicking the Time Machine icon in your Dock.
At the end of the post (scroll to the blue box at the bottom), this also gave me an strategy...
If you've moved from a network location to local, Time Machine will usually continue backing up to the sparse bundle.  But when you
Enter Time Machine, it will be looking for local backups.  You'll have to manually mount the sparse bundle by double-clicking it in the Finder before entering Time Machine, and may need the Browse ... option.
These ideas helped me, as I am now able to access the pink backups in the timeline.

I finally figured out what was the problem. The disk utility tool found an error in the backup disk and fixed it. I guess some error occurred while the upgrade to Lion was on the way.

  • Excel 2011 issues after upgrading to Lion

After upgrading to Lion, I cannot open .xls files anymore in Excel for Mac 2011. The files on my own computer work, but files that I receive via email cannot be openend. Does somebody know how to solve this? Thanks. Raymond.

Did that work for you?  I was looking at that too, but was discouraged by having to use a sparsebundle given Snow Leopard had such great NAS support.
FYI to everyone else, I upgraded my ReadyNAS firmware to 4.1.8.  NetGear indicated the following updates with the nre firmware, but it didn't fix this problem:
         New features and enhancements
         1. Added support for Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”.
         2. Added warning when NFS access to home shares is enabled.
         3. Added a redirect for http://<host>/ip to https.
         4. Added enhancements to advanced AFP permission settings.
         5. Provide download links for exported users and groups instead of asking for email.
         6. Updated ReadyNAS Remote to the latest revision.
         Bug fixes
         1. Fixed javascript error in FrontView.
         2. Delay auto power-off if backup jobs are still queued.
         Limitations
         1. IE 6 no longer supported.
         2. Drives greater than 2TB are not supported.
I found this link which I thought had some useful information: http://carryflag.blogspot.com/2010/06/imovie-event-library-on-network-drive.html
Some people reported success with the terminal command:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true
But apparantly, after the Lion update, fewer people reported success with it.  Still looking though... If anyone else has more symptoms to add, please let me know.  I might try to use a sniffer program and see if I can pull a packet capture.  That might reveal some info....
On another note, has anyone had any problems connecting to their Time Capsule in the same fashion?  I had an idea of connecting a USB Raid Array to it and connecting through the TC, but wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts or experience with that....  Thanks.

  • ICal event have disappeared after upgrading to Lion. Please help!

After upgrading to Lion, pre-existed calendar events (Newer ones) have disappeared. How can I recover?

    Greetings Alex,
If you have a backup of your computer from before you upgraded then you can restore the data from your backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
--- Let us know if you have a backup and if so, what type it is and we can tell you how to restore your calendars.
--- If you don't have a backup, consider starting one following the article above ASAP.  Anyone with information they care about on their computer should have a backup.  It is a hard lesson that every computer user learns at least once.
If you do not have a backup from before you upgraded:
    1. Make an iCal backup so you don't lose what you have currently:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase)
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
---NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion:
    4. Open iCal and see if the events you are looking for magically reappear.
If the events don't appear and you don't have a backup or have the events on another device like an iPhone or iPad then your only other option would be to use data recovery software or a data recovery company to try to get the data back (although it might be easier to just re-create the data as best you can).
    Data Recovery software examples:

    http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products _id=1
You can contact a local Apple Authorized Provider to see if they offer data recovery services: http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
There are many nationwide / worldwide data recovery companies out there.  Here are a few examples:

Hope that helps and best of luck to you.

  • Significant slowdown of Time Machine after upgrade to Lion; indexing problem

After upgrading to Lion over the weekend I notice a significant slowdown of Time Machine processing.  I assumed the first backup or two would take some time but it's been a couple of days.  The process always hangs up at the "Indexing backup" stage.  It takes a couple of hours to finish.
I found several threads relating to slowed down backups on Lion, most seem to hang at the "Preparing" stage (not the same symptom) but I did find some good diagnostic pointers.  I installed the widget to see what kind of messages were being produced and found a few dozen "Waiting for index to be ready (100)" messages at the end of the stream.  Further research - this is not a good thing :-)  It seems a couple of such messages can be ok, but this many usually indicates a problem.  I'm going to discount the possibility of a hardware failure because everything was perfectly fine up to the point I made the upgrade.  Plus the prepare and copy seem to proceed at the expected speed (I watched the most recent cycle just to be sure).
Here is the full message log (it's still running at the moment):

I further found the advice and instructions on how to run the disk utility on the sparsebundle.  I did a verify and repair, and the results came back that the drive appears to be ok (it did not say that it explicitly repaired anything).
    But the problem remains.
I use a 1TB Time Capsule with plenty of free capacity (only half full).  The TC and my MacBook are both hardwired into the home network, networking speed has never been an issue.
I'd sure hate to delete the backup file and start from scratch, there's over a year's worth of data there and I have, occassionally, wanted to go in there and pick up a downlevel or subsequently deleted file.
Any advice on other diagnostics or repair options to take?  Thanks!
    Paul

After posting I decided to keep trying to slog my way through the troubleshooting guide.  Some of the steps are beyond my understanding but I did follow the advice in #D2 to delete the .Spotlight-V100 file from the sparsebundle.  That action does seem to have done the trick, the backups are now completing in normal time.  I ran a couple just to be sure.  I've verified the backups with BackupLoupe and entered the Time Machine, all appears to be in order and as expected.  The only odd side effect is that the backup volume is no longer ejected after completion but that might just be an artifact of all my mounting/de-mounting and playing with Finder.  Anyway a very small price to pay for what looks to be a working system again.
Hopefully the good behavior will last through a few days and a few reboots :-)
ps - if you're reading this and don't know about the troublshooting guide it's here: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html (thanks pondini)
