After upgrading to Mavericks MacBook hangs at "Setting Up Your Mac" screen

After upgrade install of Mavericks, and logging in successfully one time my MacBook (aluminum unibody late 2008) now hangs at the "Setting Up Your Mac" screen after logging in with password. I can restart the unit with the power button but same thing happens. I powered off the unit, removed the battery and held the power button down for 30 seconds, re-installed the battery and restarted the unit but same thing happens.

Hold the Power button to turn off your computer and turn it on again. Then, see if Mavericks can start up.
If not, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting and reinstall Mac OS X

  • Installing Mavericks and stuck on "setting up your mac" screen

It's been stuck on the above mentioned screen for several hours. There is the wheel spinning and setting up is next to it but like I said it has been like this for hours. Should I reboot?  Don't know what to do.
    Thanks!

    Hi Logan ...
Make sure your Mac can run Mavericks > OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
Shut your Mac down by pressing the power button until the screen goes black.
Then startup while holding down the Option key. At some point you should see the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk, v10.6.
If your Mac meets Mavericks v10.9 requirements mentioned at the link above, might be a good idea to check the startup disk for errors before trying to reinstall Mavericks.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.
Instructions here >  Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
Before you try to reinstall Mavericks, make sure your Mac has enough free disk space.
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop or open the Finder, right or control click startup disk in the Sidebar on the left then click Get Info.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks, macbook pro very slow

    Hiya
I upgraded to Mavericks and ever since then my macbook pro is very slow.
When I try to open a new finder window, I get the rainbow ball. Chrome is extremely slow. Word is also slow to open, slow to wake, and slow to shut down. Pretty much everything is slow!
I did repair permissions using disk utility, but that didn't solve the problem.
I ran EtreCheck and here's what I got:

  • After upgrade to mavericks I can use acdsee pro for mac, what can I do?

Can anybody tell what to do to use acdsee for man, after my upgrade to mavericks is not working any longer

According to ACDSee web site, ACDSee Mac Pro 3 is compatible with Mavericks:

  • Screen saver will only display Flury option.  After upgrading to Mavericks I had many Apple pictures in my screen savers folder.  I deleted them and found that Flury was the only screen saver that functioned.

Screen saver in Apple prefrences will only recognise Flury as an option.  Any attempted to change the screen saver selection results in a lock up of Apple screen saver prefrences.  Forced shut down will clear the lock up, but dos not solve the problem.  I updated Iphoto and repaired permissions. Neither solved the problem.

I found a fix.  In the ~library/preferences/byhost directory.  My directory had a broken link.  I deleted it.  Rebooted.  The folder came back with various files and I was able to change my screensaver!  Good luck.

  • I upgraded my Mac last night to Mavericks from Snow Leopard 10.6.8, successfully, but this morning on start up, after signing in, I get a screen up saying "Setting up your Mac" and after an hour still nothing has happened. I have restarted, to no avail.

Upgrade successful, but this morning after signing in, Mac has locked up on "setting up your Mac" screen. Ive restarted it, and powered down and started again, but the same thing happens. Help!

I had the same problem and found the answer!
In Outlook, go to the Help menu, then Check for Updates.
I downloaded & updated Outlook, then it upgraded my database, and everything worked out fine for me!
    Good luck!

  • Mac mini stuck on setting up your mac

I shut down my mac mini.  After powering on, it came up with "setting up your mac" on the screen like I was setting up a new mac.  Not sure why this is on the screen.  I did not wipe it clean for it to start up new.
I did a hard shut down, restarted, then it came up with the user accounts.  I selected the main account (mine which is always used) and it went right back to "setting up your mac" again.
Any ideas why it is doing this?  It has been stuck on this for 24 hours now.
    Thanks!

Something has damaged the routine to find the default user as your user.  If your data is not backed up, I'd look at data recovery solutions first:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
If it is backed up, you might want to establish the fact the old first bootable user still is using the system password reset:

  • After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see Sony camcorder in iMovie anymore. It still works on MacBook, so nothing wrong with camera or connections.

After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see my Sony camcorder anymore. I tried the new iMovie as well as the old version 9.0.9, which is still in Applications. I checked the camcorder and connections in iMovie on my MacBook (not upgraded) and that still functions properly, so the problem does not seem to be in iMovie, old or new, or in camcorder and connection.
Anybody with the same problem or a solution?
    Thanks mbkom

  • MacBook slow after upgrading to mavericks--still slow after reverting with time machine

After upgrading to Mavericks OS my 2012 MacBook became slower than ever before. My MacBook was freezing and the beach ball kept appearing. This seemed to be something a lot of people were experiencing with Mavericks, so after other suggested didn't work, I decided to just revert to Mountain Lion using Time Machine. But my mac is still slow--I now avoid using it because it's such a huge hassle. I have 8 gb of RAM, 5.5 gb of which is free. ~98 % of the CPU is idle.  Have no idea how to get my computer back to how it used to be. Any suggestions?

Resetting SMC could solve the problem, if you didn't yet.

Or clean install of Mavericks could solve the problem.

  • My macbook pro is running really slow after upgrade to Mavericks

my macbook pro is running really slow after upgrading to Mavericks....any ideas?

OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
The above link is not very useful, so if it doesn't help read on.
There are many potential reasons that a Mac may be running slower than expected, but more information is required to begin troubleshooting, much more.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding. It is premature to conclude your hard disk is failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Macbook slower after upgrading to Mavericks

Hello, I'm owner of a Macbook Pro MD322LL/A and I haven't had any issues with Lion (the OS that came with) but after upgrading to Mavericks it changed a lot:
    Lower performance.
Transitions in the launchpad are laggy (and also buggy).
    Start up time increased.
Anyway, that's why I want to make a clean install of Mavericks. Because I think that all these things happens because of making an upgrade rather than a fresh install (same thing occured with my iPhone and iOS 7, but that's another story )
    And my question is:
Is it risky to format the Hard Drive and install the OS again? And do I need to do some things before doing it?(in order to keep the license and else)
Assuming that I need just to format the hardrive and install the OS X, isn't it a "simple" of doing it? (like Cmd+R but making a clean install)
    Thanks!

As you can see, there's a couple of things that are "bad" so instead of correcting every single problem (that would take me much longer) I just want to do a clean install and thats it.

I suppose you could do that with Internet Recovery as well. You should not have an issue in terms of losing your OS license, as long as you use the same Apple ID that you have been using with your Mac.
I didn't understand the license thing, but if I erase the disk and perform a clean install from a bootable USB that license won't lost am I right?
I made a bootable USB of Mavericks just using this simple command:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/SINTITULO --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
What do I need to do now? go to disk utility select erase, and then install using the USB?

When do I need to do that? after erasing the hard drive with disk utility?

Yes, I don't really care about the things that my mac has, all the "important" things were backed up

  • Cant open doc files from the server on MacBook Air after upgrading to Maverick

Cant open doc files from the server on MacBook Air after upgrading to Maverick, I can only open up docx file. Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestion! I don't use Phantasm or VectorScribe (or any Astute Graphics plugins for that matter). I do, however, have a Wacom tablet and have a few plugins that concern using Blurb Book Creator as well as LiveSurface Context.
I did the very unfortunate and foolish act of upgrading to Maverick without a backup, so postponing isn't an option for me.
I geuss my question at this point would be, would it be worthwhile to wipe all the adobe products from my harddrive and re-install them? Or would that be a useless endeavor.
I don't have an external hard-drive so backing up and re-installing the entire OS would be a bit much. Any suggestions?

  • Macbook 2012 Mid: Can't mount USB mass storage after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I'm having big problems with USB mass storages. After upgrading to Mavericks my Mac doesn't see some USB storage devices (mostly USB sticks and Android phone's memory cards via USB. My external USB 3.0 hard disks work fine) at all even though the devices themselves (for example my Android phone) are clearly recognized according to the System Report. When I plug them in, they don't show up on my Finder or on Disk Utility.
I've searched everywhere and it seems like some other people are having the same problem, none seems to offer a definite solution. I've even formatted my HD and reinstalled Mavericks from the recovery partition. Now it mounts a USB stick that was in one of the USB ports at the time of installation but still doesn't read anything else! The funny thing is when I boot into Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition, I can mount any USB devices including the USB stick and the Android phone I'm having problems on Mavericks without any problems. I can even see then when I boot into the recovery so there's clearly something wrong with Mavericks.
Any chance someone has figured out a solution for this? Apple should've address this long time ago.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? Note: If the devices are not in Mac OS X format, they normally won't mount in safe mode, but they should appear in Disk Utility.
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
