After upgrading to Mavericks, my macbook pro (15' early 2011) keeps crashing and restarting when running on battery.
It happens too much. I have 8gbs of Kingstom RAM installed. Is there a problem with Mavericks and Kingstom RAM?

Hi. I'm not trying to rush things, you may have a different problem, but your issue looks quite familiar to me. I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:

So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. This post describing the process (there are different files involved depending of your GPU version, so make sure you are moving the right ones):

Macbook pro i7 early 2011 keeps crashing
Hi all,
I've been experiencing freezes and crashes recently that don't happen all of the time but do seem to have elements in common. I'm usually doing something graphic heavy like a video call, but also noticed google maps can cause a crash. The crash is usually preceded with the left hand side of the keyboard heating up and the fans getting very loud (although I've installed SMC Fan Control and the temperatures don't look to be out of the ordinary from what I read).
The crash can take a few forms:
I can get a screen split down the middle, a sort of mix between the last thing on the screen and pink and green lines.
The display can go black completely.
Or i can get black and blue vertical lines.
All of these kill the Mac and require a restart. Sometimes after a restart i can get the blue and black lines back or it hangs on a white screen. This usually results in the Mac heating up, getting louder then turning off.
I've looked around and my fear is that it's a hardware fault and I need to replace the logic board but I was wondering if anyone could offer me any last hope that it's something I can fix without a hardware change (I'm 2 months past the extended 3 year Applecare program I took out and don't really want to pay a few hundred pounds to fix something they seem to know is a common fault!).
What I've already tried:
PRAM and SMC reset
Apple Hardware tests - No errors
Remounting RAM and running Memtest in Single User Mode - No errors
The usual Disk Utility checks
One thing I have read is that Google Chrome can cause crashes for people. I've switched back to Firefox but it's not been long enough to say whether that's having an effect. No crashes though.
Any insight that will save me a trip to the "Genius Bar" would be appreciated.

The temperature readings usually range from 40°C when it starts to around 90°C with more intensive tasks. Averages around 60°C with 4 or 5 apps running at once. As for activity monitor you can see a screen grab from last night here - http://cl.ly/image/3E3v242P0O09. To layman like me it seems OK.
Have to report there have been no crashes in the last couple of days and less odd fan activity since I stopped using Chrome and switched to Firefox. A big difference so far. Everything seems to have calmed down. Surely a browser can't have that big of an impact! Especially on I've used without problems for a couple of years now.

I have heard it can take a few attempts to get the logic board working again, can't really do that as this my work machine so need something that won't have me running back and forth to Apple. I'll look in to the GPU reballing. Was considering a new machine even before this happened but I'd still want to make sure this one is in working order so I could recoup some of the costs and not have what could be a few hundred quid sat in cupboard.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful. -
My MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G are not working together, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III and in my MacBook Pro it does not work.
Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please.After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it. -
MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model: Auto Shutdown/Restart Problem

This is my first time to sign in, join the community, and ask a question or create a discussion. FYI, I really have little knowledge on tech stuff so please bear with me. Here's my problem, and I hope you can give out your suggestions:
I have a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model which I have upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion.
A month or two ago, it had started shutting down or restarting at random times. As time passed, this problem became more frequent.
I finally decided to have it checked at Digital Hub, a licensed Apple distributor. After almost a week, they've finally diagnosed that the problem is with my battery. I got my MacBook pro back around 2 (two) weeks ago, and ever since then I had to use an outlet in order for it and myself to work properly. Right now, I'm still saving up to purchase new batteries.
Recently, however, I've noticed that my MacBook Pro auto restarts even when plugged. Take note, RESTART and no longer shutting down completely. Upon further trials, I've finally concluded that it does so only during the use of heavy programs such as Diablo 3, Final Cut Pro X, and when rendering with iMovie. I have yet to try with Adobe products, particularly with Lightroom and Photoshop, and see if it does the same. But more or less, that's what I've noticed so far.
Given that I still haven't purchased the battery yet, I know it's still vague to know the real probelm/solution. But with the given situations, what are you views on this matter? Please let me know. It'd be of great help. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

Just an update:
2 loops/passes done - no errors.
Called up Digital Hub and talked to the technician, he says there are 3 possible problems:
1. Battery (which is still inside the laptop) may cause some disturbances with the electric current
2. Software related - most likely re-formatting may be needed
3. Video card may have failed, which means complete change of the logic board ----> worst case
I'm crossing my fingers that it's either of the first two. -
MacBook Pro 17 (early 2011) - pink stripes and crash
After almost 4 years of flawless service, my early 2011 MBP 17 has just about become a paperweight. Here are the events leading to the crash:
1. Flawless operation running OSX 10.7 (Lion) for 3.5 years. Daily use, main work computer with CS6, Logic and Final Cut X used regularly.
2. Decide to upgrade OSX to 10.10 due to need to install GoPro editing software.
3. Upon OSX 10.10 install, I get a "file system verify or repair failed" error.
4. At this point, I try a "clean install" after creating a bootable OSX 10.10 installer on an external HD.
5. Wipe the HD with the "zero out" option and do a new install of OSX 10.10. Restore my backup from TimeMachine.
6. All worked well for 4-5 days until I got repeated crashes (fans would come on and it would turn off abruptly).
7. Today, I got thick pink vertical stripes (~3/4" thick) across the screen, and after the apple logo goes away, I stare at a gray screen until it crashes again.
This is what I've tried so far:
1. PRAM reset.
2. SMC reset.
3. Repair permissions in Disk Utility.
The computer won't even get to the desk top, will not go into recovery mode (Command + R), will not safe boot (shift key start up), but will go into the startup menu (option key start up). Should I try another clean install of say, back to 10.7 or maybe step down to 10.9 (if I can find a copy)?Not a HDD issue. It is a GPU or display problem. It will require an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a definitive diagnosis.
You can test this using an external monitor. If the monitor shows a normal image, then it is the display or the display connection that is faulty. If it is the same as the MBP display, the the GPU is the problem and the logic board will have to be replaced.

After upgrading to Mavericks on MacBook Pro, help doesn't open
I have a MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.4 with a processor 2.8 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo with memory of 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. I just upgraded to Mavericks last week and now I can't get the help menus to open when in Finder or using Numbers. I haven't checked the other applications. Do I need to do something with my help menu items? If so what would that be?
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo). -

Yosemite on Macbook Pro 13'' early 2011: crashes and loss of functionality
After the OSX update my Macbook pro 13'' early 2011 has developed lots of problems: apps crash, battery doesn't last like before (5 hours in standby instead 10), Safari opens pages in 2 minutes and when I try to turn off the mac, it keep on working. I will try with a clean installation, but do you think this is normal? Thank u for the support.
The battery is non-removable, so if you want Apple you have to go to the Genius Bar.
As far as genuine Apple memory, I think it's the same thing. You may get it in the store, I don't think they sell it online. You can try calling the 800 number. You seem to want the Apple RAM only, but I have to tell you that most of us here recommend Other World Computing or Crucial. -
Microphone and Line In Suddenly Not Working Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011
Yesterday without warning, my internal mic stopped working on my Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011. I discovered this when the recipient of a Skype call couldn't hear me, and verified that the mic was not getting any level in the Sound system preferences pane. There is also no microphone input happening when I plug in my iPhone headset to the headphones jack. The audio out seems to be fine. I had to use a USB microphone to get any sound into the computer. I used the microphone just a few days ago without any issue.
I've already tried:
Rebooting
Resetting PRAM
Creating second account to test audio
And none of the above had any affect. Other note: I recently had the GPU of this computer replaced under Apple's special replacement plan. Anything else I should try before making an appointment to have the hardware looked at?pushyourmind,
If you’re up-to-date with Software Update, then you have the correct firmware installed. If you’re running 32-bit Windows 7, then Boot Camp Support Software 4.0.4033 contains the correct drivers; if you’re running 64-bit Windows 7, then Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621 contains the correct drivers. Which ever support software corresponds to your version of Windows 7, try downloading the corresponding .zip archive and following the installation instructions on the corresponding link above when booted in Windows.
Boot Camp 5.1 supports Windows 8.1 on your model MacBook Pro if you’re running OS X 10.8.3 or newer. Earlier versions of Boot Camp and older versions of OS X don’t support Windows 8.1 in Boot Camp on your model MacBook Pro. -

Since I upgraded to Maverick, my Macbook Pro shuts down quite often without warning. No idea why.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo). -

Maybe some other app. In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems tab: remove all entries with the minus sign underneath. This will not uninstall anything, you have to start those apps by hand now. Restart.

Yes: Restart again while holding the shift key, this will start the mac in SafeMode: only the necessary items are loaded to run.

Yes: Make an etrecheck list and post it here.
No: Restart, put the items in the LoginItems back, one by one, restart after each entry, and you will find the "culprit"
