After upgrading to Mavericks my Time Machine gives me error message.

I use a WD Live Book that keeps my security copies on my home network. Since installing Mavericks I get an error message saying that it cannot perform security copies cause sparse file already exists and refers back to latest copy 48 days ago.
However when I do go in to Time Machine it seems to show that for the last 3 days scurity copies have been done.
But when I try to do a a new security copy invariably the top menu says that copy has failed.
Has anyone experienced the same thing? Is there anyway to check clearly if Time Machine is now working properly or not?
Thank you for any replies...

Dear Matt,
Basicaly I think what happened was what your article describes:
Time Machine keeps track of files and folders that have changed since your last backup so that it only backs up those files and folders. If Time Machine loses track of files and folders that have changed since the last backup, it compares an "inventory" of your current data to an inventory of your backup. When this happens, Time Machine preferences displays a "Preparing..." status message for a longer period of time. See Mac OS X 10.5: Time Machine preferences may display "Preparing" for a longer time.
Message: Time Machine starts a new, full backup instead of a smaller incremental backup
However none of the reasons the article presents were the cause I think, since I only tried to backup after the installation of Mavericks. Maybe time capsule hadn't updated right after? I really don't know. However I am glad to say that the problem seems to have fixed itself. It took a long time preparing a backup and finally did a complete backup of roughly 200GB which took a while. (which I am still to verify if it has deleted backups from before the installation of Mavericks due to lack of space).
Anyhow its backed up and seems to be working fine now. As to why it's happened and how it got fixed or what the problem actually was... I really don't know.
Thank you for the reply, it was helpful at least to determine what might have gone wrong.
Best,
Miguel F

My normally reliable Time Machine is giving following error message;-
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/JOE OTOOLE’s Computer.sparsebundle” is already in use.
What does it mean and how do I deal with it?

I have loaded it into ML using a great and free utility unpkg.. it probably works much the same as Pacifist.
Locate your downloaded 5.6 dmg file.. click it so you can see the pkg but don't bother opening it.
    Download, install and run unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Drag the airport utility 5.6 pkg over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory on the desktop.. named AirPortUtility56.. drill down to Applications, Utilities and you will find the unpackaged utiity.. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it where you are..

After updating to Mavericks the apps store gives me the message "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."  How do I still update apps such as iphoto??

What happened was you never accepted these apps into your Mac App Store account.
Drag & drop the apps in the Trash and use OS X Recovery to install them again. after installing the apps be sure to accept them into your account this time from the Purchases pane of the Mac App Store.

after upgrading to mountain lion i keep getting an error message saying my startup disc is full. it shouldnt be full because there is barely anything on there and i was running windows with bootcamp prior to this with no issues. my computer now freezes and programs close randomly. The usual command for opening windows with bootcamp doesnt work. once in restarted my computer after it froze and it rebooted in windows automatically. i really just want to know if there is a way to take the upgrade off my laptop because it is very annoying.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

  • After upgrading to Lion the bookmarks in Preview returns error message.

After upgrading to Lion the bookmarks in Preview returns error message : The File "****" couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it. To change the perimssion, select the item in finder and Choose File info.  I have bookmarked plenty of files in Preview.  How to overcome this error message???

Doesn't work Steve. I think it is an issue with Preview being sandboxed (check the sandbox column in Activity Monitor: Preview = Yes). Sandboxed apps restrict file access to those the user has explicitly selected. My theory is that this causes the unfortunate side effect of bookmarked or linked PDFs not working. A simple test: open a file with bookmarks, manually open the bookmarked file and then select the bookmark in the first file - it should open with no complaints about permissions (which leads to a weak workaround: open all the PDFs you intend to work with!).

  • Time machine give me this message..it happens regularly, why and how do I fix it?

My time machine appears to work fine but now it has crashed 3 times and give me this message.  "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you" It's very annoying because I continue to loose all my old data. What's happening and how can I avoid this in the future.

There are several causes.. but you are probably using wireless to the TC.. and it is suffering a poor connection and corrupting the backup.. use ethernet.

  • After a full restore from Time Machine, I get "error code -6584" when trying to go into TM.

I took our iMac in, at the direction of Apple, to have the hard drive replaced. When we got it back, I restored from Time Machine (on Time Capsule). One file on the desktop, a spreadsheet file, has reverted to a version five months old, with the loss of considerable data, so I don't know which files I can now trust. Also, when I try to go into Time Machine, I get "error code -6584" and am unable to access my backups
This is potentially very very bad. What can I do?

    Solved:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"

Since uploading Maverick, all of my Microsoft apps give an error message "(name of the app) quit unexpectedly.  Click Reopen to open the application again."  However, this does nothing but renew this window.  I have to click on the "OK" button to get rid of the error message.  What to do?

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode?

  • Upgraded to Mavericks  and time machine backups keep failing.

I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and now I find my time machine backups keep failing. I first tried turning off the power to the time machine then turning it on again and I managed to get one complete backup but that took over 20 hours to complete.
The time machine  backup mode never seems to get beyond " preparing backup" then showing the message "backing up failed, disc already in use"
The time machine backup worked fine before I upgraded, is there a way round this problem or will I have to go through reloading the time machine as if it were a new piece of equipment?
My wife's iMac is still on mountain lion 10.8.5  and the backups on the same Time Machine work fine.
Any help would be gratefully received
    Greg

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem.
MBP 2011 running 10.9 named "ebook"
MacMini running 10.8.5 server with TM share
everything works fine UNTIL for some reason the MBP is interrupted during a TM backup ...
After that I get the disk already in use error !
Rebooting the MBP wont help, but I narrowed the problem down ...
Looking on the Mini server I noticed :
    - the TM backup user stays connected over AFP, even after several hours of inactivity and a couple of reboots of the MBP. Killing the AFP connection works, But problem stil continues !
    - looking on the MBP with "lsof | grep ebook" showed me that the SparseBundles were still in use by the AFP process ... Using the Server control panel and restarting AFP solved that ...
After restarting the AFP process the remote TM Backup started to work again !
A couple of days later, the same problem occurred again, fixed it by this work around ...
I hope there will be a more permanent solotiun for this !

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, Enter Time Machine and cannot see any previous backup at all

MBP, upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.
After "Enter Time Machine", the time line on the right side of the screen does not show any previous backup at all.
In Finder, I can see the backup folder and the inside contents.
In Time Machine Preference, I did select the disk for backup again.
    Any idea ?  Thank you.

Thank you for your reply and the links.
    I did this:
    1) I have two ext. USB drives for the MBP time machine backup, did not occur to me to try the other one which is the very first disk, let's call it disk 1, I used for backup, the other one I started using after a year or so.
    2) reboot with the disk 1 connected
    3) do a "Backup Now", and I forgot the exact dialogs and what they say.
    4) something like, "choose a disk for the backup", I chose disk 1
    5) it knows I had two disk for backup and ask me if I want to use two disk for backup, click yes
    6) the time machine pref. says something like initial backup (after new system installed?)
    7) after it done, I can see the previous time machine back up and the time line goes back to where it was before.
    8) connect the disk 2 and "Backup Now", it just went to backup right away, after it's done, I can see the prev. backups and the time line too.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • After upgrade to Snow Leopard, Time Machine not working

    Hi all,
About two days ago I upgraded my MacBook 4.1 to Snow Leopard.
Now Time Machine cannot backup to my external HDD anymore. One error message stated that it would not fine the settings file.
    Please help.
What do I need to do to get my backups working again?
    Thank you

Pondini - I have an issue too. And so I went to the troubleshooting tips you listed here and was not able to find a solution. Specifically, I don't get a message. I plain ole don't get nothing. After I installed Snow my first backup failed. Funny thing is the backup on my wifes computer also failed. She does not have an Intel Mac. It's a PowerBook G4. Hence no Snow Leopard there. I have a iMac 24 Aluminum. My Time Capsule backup worked fine until Snow. My TC is wired via ethernet. There is no latest date. When Time Machine backup starts the TM preference pane says it's "Making disk available" Something to that effect. And that's where it stays. If I then try to do anything with the preference panel - like close it - I find out the Preferences are not responding. So I force quit. I try to stop Time Machine backups and it's no good. The TM indicator - that little backwards running clock - in the menu bar just keeps on it's merry little way. The only way to stop it - shutdown. Strange thing is shutdown then refuses to - well, shutdown. I end up having to hold the power button for 5 seconds. I don't get error messages. I get nothing indicating what may be causing this problem. I have been searching these and other forums looking for an answer. I had hoped the user tips you listed would have a solution, but, alas, no. I deleted the timemachine plist in the "higher" library. No luck. I have powered down everything. No luck. Those were two ideas I saw that said they worked. So where do I go from here? Where do I look for error messages that will point me in the right direction? I'd appreciate any help from anybody.

  • Upgrade to Maverick and Time Machine Backup

    Hi,
I just finished upgrding to Maverick with a fresh install on my Mac Pro (2009 model).  Prior to upgrading, I have been using Time Machine to do the routine backup of my computer system.
My question is whether I should continue my Time Machine backup with the original backup set or I should start a new backup set?
But if I start a new backup set, how can I get to some of the older files in the old backup set in case I need to restore those files from the Mountain Lion version?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, Mavericks has smashed people's old backups.. start a new backup in a different location.. or archive off the old backup from the TC onto a USB drive.. wipe the drive and start again. You can then access the backups on the USB any time you want.. plug it into the computer and use TM to look at the files.
Spend a bit of time reading how TM works.
And what you can do with it.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Even if you just skim through FAQ.. check out how to mount TM backups from another mac..(effectively your old Mountain Lion install is another mac).

Keeping your old backup intact makes good sense.. !!

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, Time Machine backup fails

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I have used TM with an external HD attached to my Airport Extreme for a few years now to back up my MBP. It has worked great, so after the ML upgrade, TM will not recognize my external HD dedicated to TM backups. I can see the EHD on the TM system preferences, but it on gives me the option to remove it. Under other available disks, it also shows the EHD but the name of the Airport is different. The name of the Airport is called The Thread, but on other available disks section of the screen, it is shown as The-Thread. I have tried to change to this and I get the error message saying it can't see it. The other HD plugged into my Airport Extreme has all of my iTunes files on it and it plays the files just fine and I can see the files on the TM backup HD in the finder.
I have gotten the errors 17 and 60 when trying the backups. The dash in the Airport name is the only difference I can see.

Backing up to a hard drive on an Airport Extreme base station is, contrary to common sense, not a supported configuration and is known to be problematic, with the possibility of sudden failure always looming. See:
