After upgrading to Mountain Lion, Time Machine backup fails

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I have used TM with an external HD attached to my Airport Extreme for a few years now to back up my MBP. It has worked great, so after the ML upgrade, TM will not recognize my external HD dedicated to TM backups. I can see the EHD on the TM system preferences, but it on gives me the option to remove it. Under other available disks, it also shows the EHD but the name of the Airport is different. The name of the Airport is called The Thread, but on other available disks section of the screen, it is shown as The-Thread. I have tried to change to this and I get the error message saying it can't see it. The other HD plugged into my Airport Extreme has all of my iTunes files on it and it plays the files just fine and I can see the files on the TM backup HD in the finder.
I have gotten the errors 17 and 60 when trying the backups. The dash in the Airport name is the only difference I can see.

Backing up to a hard drive on an Airport Extreme base station is, contrary to common sense, not a supported configuration and is known to be problematic, with the possibility of sudden failure always looming. See:

That seems unusual unless you changed drives.
If you upgraded the drive it sees the computer as a different one to the original backup..
I am not sure that it isn't better to do a fresh backup but you can try and inherit the old backup..

  • Mountain Lion Time Machine backup to USB drive super slow

I recently upgraded the MacBook Air to Mountain Lion.  The time machine backup is SUPER SLOW even when doing it on a USB 3.0 Drive.  It currently showing 2 days for 100GB backup.  I was able to copy the same 100 GB of  files on to the same hard disk in less than 1 hr.  This is so slow that i might be better off managing back ups manually or just writing a small script to do it.  But before I do so wanted to check if anybody else has the same issues.
    Regards
    Uddhav
    Update:
Turning off the spotlight on the external hard disk helped improve the speed dramatically. Brought it down from 1 GB in 1 hr to almost 1 GB / minute.
    System Preferences --> Spotlight
Add the Drive to the exceptions list.  It will say this is a time machine disk so except the time machine folder everything else will be added to the exception list. Say Yes and thats it !!!
Now says 19hrs still a lot according to me but much better than 2 days.
Any body has any additional tips /tricks please share !!
    Regards

That may indicate a damaged index.  Keep an eye on subsequent backups -- if they take a long time, and/or show "indexing backup" on the Time Machine preferences panel for very long, you may need to delete it, so OSX can recreate it.  See the pink box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting for instructions.
It will say this is a time machine disk so except the time machine folder everything else will be added to the exception list.
Is there anything else on the drive (in the same partition)?  If so, that's usually not a good idea.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3 for an explanation.
Now says 19hrs still a lot according to me but much better than 2 days.
Yes, that's quite slow, especially if your Mac supports USB 3.
If it doesn't, it should be running at USB 2 speeds, which for a full backup should be, very roughly, 40-50 GB/hour.
See the rest of #D2 in the Troubleshooting link for other causes of slow backups.

  • Will a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup restore to a Lion MBP?

    I have two computers:
    (1) My iMac late 2009. This is upgradeable to Mountain Lion.
    (2) My MBP late 2006. This is running Lion, but is not upgradeable to Mountain Lion.
If I upgrade my iMac to Lion and my iMac needs repair will I be able to restore from Time Machine to my older MBP?
    Thanks,
    doug

Yes, I would have the same problems with CCC - if I upgrade my iMac to Mountain Lion.
If I don't upgrade, then it works just great. I unmount the CCC clone from one computer, attach it to the other computer and do a reverse-incremental-backup to the other computer and - voila! - I have synchronized my two computers!
It's the only way I know of synchronizing two computers.
I've been doing this for several years now with no problems.
It probably only works because the OS is the same and the hardware on my late 2009 iMac and late 2006 MBP are sufficiently similar. Both use Core 2 Duo cpus.
But if I upgrade to Mountain Lion (or, upgrade my MBP to an i5 or i7 cpu) I will lose the ability to do this. So on travel, I would have no easy way of synchronizing apps and files.
Of course one easy solution is just "don't upgrade." It's not like anything is particularly broken now. But it's always fun to have the latest OS.
I'm just not sure of the best strategy for having everything I need for travel if I want to use the MBP. I guess I could always switch from this quick synchronization process to a tedious "all afternoon and evening" process of moving files and folders over.
The kinds of files I'm talking about are source files I'm working on, VMs - all the typical stuff people have. Photos. Whatever.
I know how to do it manually. It's just a time-consuming nuisance is all.
One thing I'm doing is moving away from "On My Mac" folders in Mail and doing everything in IMAP. That should help. I also have LogMeIn installed. So I could always get something if I forgot it. And I have more stuff in DropBox and Evernote. That also helps.
    Thanks,
    doug

  • Restoring Mountain Lion Time Machine Backup in Lion.

I need to downgrade my RMBP from Mountain Lion too Lion. If I use the internet recovery to restore it to Lion, will I then be able to reinstall all my programs from a Time Machine backup?

OK, I;m back up and running. Found out that /Library/Applicaiton Support/Adobe was in two places. One was at the root level and another was in my account area. Each had similar files but the root one had the ones I was missing.

  • Mountain lion time machine backup onto mavericks?

    Hi all;
I recently had to get rid of my 2013 MBP running mountain lion. In the process, I had to to a time machine backup to an external HD to preserve my [then] current data.
Now I am replacing that computer with a brand new MBP with mavericks.
My question is– what do I need to do to get my data back on to my new machine from that backup?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Cheers!

  • Lion cannot see mountain lion time machine backups

I have just had the HDD on my 2010 iMac changed under the 1TB replacement program. Before wiping my original HDD I made sure my time machine back was up to date. Originally my machine was installed with Mountain Lion, the new HDD has just Lion. I have just tried the recovery utility to restore using time machine and all it can see is my updates before I installed Mountain Lion. Presumably Lion cannot see Mountain Lion backups or something else. Does anybody know how I can simply get my most upto date time machine backup to restore the system.
    Thanks

FYI I updated to Mountain Lion and still cannot do a full recovery from any Mountain Lion backups. The backups exist as I can see them in Finder and also when running the Time Machine app. In the app I'm able to restore individual items, but I don't want to waste my life doing this I just want to restore my system.

  • Mountain Lion: Time Machine Backups Get Very Big!

This weekend I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion, and most things work fine. I use an USB hardrive for backups, it's the same volume I used under Lion. Mountain Lion was able to continue using it, so I did not lose the history of my documents. So far, so good.
But: From time to time backups get really big. One example: This morning the backup that finished at 10:30 was about 50 MB at size, which is ok. The next backup started at 11:15 (and is still in progress), and while backing up, the estimated size grows and grows. Currently it's about 26,55 GB estimated, with 24 GB already backed up. But I did not produce more than 26GB of new or changed files, I just visited some websites, read news in Reeder and read some emails with Mail.app.
I saw this behaviour several times since monday, which lead time machine to clean old backups (previously I had backups from March, now the oldest backup is from May). What causes time machine to think that there is so much data not backed up, and why doesn't time machine know the size of the backup before copying the files, as it did in Lion?
    Any suggestions?
    Marcus

I have something similar.  On three of the last 4 days, I have one TM backup which is about 56GB.  And this is when I have not (knowingly) done anything to create 56GB data.
But, I have found something very odd.  I have a large backup today.   I then look at the previous hour's backup - it is missing /Applications, /System, /Library, etc.  (it does have /Users and /opt).   Given that, it is not surprising that the following backup is very big when it needs to redo /Applications, etc. (about 56GB).
So the strange behaviour is not the big backup, but the small one that preceded it!!
The .Backup.log and .exclusions.plist (in the TM backup location) look normal (or should I say no different to any others).  In partciular the .exclusuions.plist doesn't have extras.
The entries in system.log look normal to me, as well.
And today, the small backup was at 4:22 am when I was fast asleep.
Is your behaviour like this Marcus?

  • Where can I find calendar library in mountain lion time machine backup

    Hi together,
I just had a series of new hardware and problems with the software. In december I had to buy a new MBP as the motherboard of my old one was damaged. So now, with mountain lion, I only have made one backup with time machine so far.
A few days ago I bought an iPad for the first time. Thats why I was reading the instruction for icloud and tried a few things. And there I made a mistake and all calender entries were deleted.
Thought: no big problem, as I have a backup. BUT I cant find the calendar files in the backup. I know, that the library is only shown in "Go to + alt-key", but I dont find it in the backup. (I tried also an terminal command written in a community thread, but nothing happend)
    Please, can anybody help me?
    Thanks a lot in advance!!!!

If you synchronize any of your calendars with a server such as iCloud, disable that synchronization. Quit Calendar.
Triple-click the line below to select it: ~/Library/Calendars Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Enter Time Machine and restore that folder from the snapshot you want.
Relaunch Calendar and test. Your calendars should be as they were when the snapshot was taken. If you don't sync with a server, stop here. If you do sync some of the calendars with a server, select each one in turn and then select
    File ▹ Export ▹ Export…
from the menu bar. You'll get ICS files with the filename extension ".ics". Re-enable sync. Usually, all the calendars you just restored will be deleted. That's not a problem. Create a new calendar on the server for each one you exported and want to sync:
    File ▹ New Calendar
Then import the calendar from the corresponding ICS file:
    File ▹ Import ▹ Import…
Follow the prompts to import the new events to the calendar you just created. For calendars that you don't want to sync, just import them again. They'll appear in the calendar list under On My Mac.

  • Mountain Lion Time Machine Encryption Fails with External Thunderbolt Drive

I have a Buffalo 1TB MiniStation external Thunderbolt/USB3.0 Drive that I am trying to select from Time Machine with Encryption on. It fails. Further, when attempting to encrypt the drive from Disk Utility, it succeeds however when mounting the disk displays "Unusable Disk" after the password prompt and can only be mounted by re-formatting with encryprion turned off.
Selecting repair disk also does not work as the drive fails to mount.
This can be duplicated using the either connection (Thunderbolt or USB).
I called the manufacturer of the drive and they state it is "Apple's problem".
    Any help here?

    seejoefish wrote:

Unlikely. If encryption works for other USB3/Thunderbolt drives, then it is definitely Buffalo's problem. At this time, there aren't many such drives so it is hard to say. Buffalo's Time Machine customers don't seem to be happy with Buffalo's support: http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/bd-p/0101

    G. Cactus : it's not.
All my 4 external disks are located in the same place, and I can only (fortunately) backup on one of them, without any switch.
Pity the combo did not the trick for Gerrit.
I advise everyone to call Apple Care in your respective country, to hasten
    a quick fix by Apple.
I'm not sure the thread on this forum would be sufficient for Big Apple, despite its excellent suppport,
to be warned about this bug in a timely manner.

  • Imac keeps crashing in time machine backup after upgrade to mountain lion

2008 imac kept crashing (shutdown and restart) during first backup after upgraded to mountain lion. The backup size was about 10GB but time machine crashed after a while (at most 2GB) and never completed backup. So, I don't have any backup since right before I upgraded from Lion. Any suggestion?

Something strange happened. I was able to get time machine to work by going out to the login screen (the account kept logged in) and let it run the backup with the screen off (screen auto off after a few min). I tried it on two different external drives and that did the trick on both. Since the initial Mountain Lion backup was huge (155 GB), I was quite surprise that it worked at all. I assume your MBP was a Lion to ML. I also just did a 2012 MBP upgrade but that one was smoother. I did not recall having crashing issue. One thing I did find during this was that my WD passport USB drive was corrupted. Not sure it was the cause or not. I had to erase and reformat to get it back to work. Maybe do a verify disk to confirm. Good luck.

  • Mountain  Lion Time Machine over Snow Leopard TM

Is it save to create a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup on an external hard drive with a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup? The TM Preference panel is showing "Oldest backup: None" and "Latest Backup: None". Will Mountain Lion erase the prior Snow Leopard TM backup? I don't want to lose my prior backups.

  • I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work. Help?

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.
^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)
