After uploading snow leopard 10.6 Mac freezes up

After upgrading a desktop Mac from OSX 10.4 to Snow Leopard 10.6 it freezes up. Should I start all over again from the beginning or is there a way to find the problem?

  • After installing Snow Leopard, Word for Mac X document prints only top 1/3. Excel, PDF is fine...only word is a problem.

Installed Snow Leopard and later in week went to print out a full page word document (Word for Mac X) and it only printed top 1/3 of page. Checked with PDF and Excel documents and all printed out OK. TextEdit is fine in printing as well. Then created a new document with a sentence on top of page and a sentence on bottom - printed fine.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since your problem is only w/a Microsoft product, you should contact Microsoft for Mac Support  and/or post in their forums.

  • After installing Snow Leopard I can no longer "save photos on computer" after inserting a memory stick to an HP Photosmart C5180 All in 1                                                                                           Photosmart C5180 All in one

    Hello,
When I insert a memory stick into my HP Photosmart C5180 All in one and I try to "save photos on computer" the printer reads: "You need to install device software". This all started happening after I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac 10.6.8. Can someone please advise on what I need to do?

Typically it's a good idea to uninstall any devices attached to the Mac before doing an upgrade.  This prevents problems that can be caused by the upgrade.  Below are the instructions for uinstalling and reinstalling the printer.  I'm also going to include a link to the full feature software and drivers for the printer.  Let me know what happens.

  • Hard drives damaged after installing Snow Leopard :(

After installing Snow Leopard all software seemed to work fine. Then I found out that e-sata doesn't seem to work well with Snow.
I've tried two different e-sata cards, including CalDigit's FASTA-2e, which CalDigit claims works fine with 10.6.
My external enclosure appeared and immediately gave me a kernel panic. I tried several times with different working drives and now they are all heavily damaged. Kernal panic after kernal panic, I am noe having a difficult time accessing the data.
Now here's the strange part...after going back to Leopard 10.5, my internal drives all seemed to be infected as well. After using Disk Warrior and apple's disc utility, I got those working ok.
What could be going wrong here? I installed Snow. It was fast. But it wasn't worth it...at least not yet.
If there's anything else I might be doing wrong or any way to fix these drives now, please let me know.
    Thanks all!

It seems that Sonnet is not yet compatible with Snow Leopard either. That issue was covered here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2114442&tstart=0.
Anyone know if RocketRAID eSATA for Mac works with Snow? Apple sells it...

  • Has anyone found a solution for fixing the dvd reading problems after installing snow leopard?

I installed snow leopard on my macpro tower and my dvd player will not read dvds. My archived dvd all come up blank but on my laptop their fine. All my other dvds are just spit out. I have seen hundreds of post about this in the forums but I haven't come across a solution. Apple told me they have never come across this issue which is disturbing to say the least.

    Leroydouglas
Thanks, I did see that thread and way too many others like it. My drive was working fine up to the minute I installed snow leopard and now I can't read all my archived dvds of the last 5 years of my work. Nor will it read the training dvd "New" that I just bought. It also won't even read the iwork disc that came with snow leopard. Of course all these disc work fine on my other make that didn't get the snow leopard upgrade. Apple support told me they never heard of anything like this. I took it to the apple store and they think it the dvd drive itself. Please, it plays cds fine and accepts new dvd media...some. Countless people have had their drives go out right after the snow leopard install.
I'm sorry but what happens to a dvd player or what hardware problem happens to only allow a player to read a few dvds but all cds. Could someone explain to me what breaks. Apple saying I need to by a new dvd player from them is crazy. Why do I get the feeling that if I install snow leopard on my other machine that the dvd player will also break. How also can apple not have any record of this happening to others.
I work with windows machines and linux boxes and Macs and I'm sorry I trusted an upgrade to a mac os that has been around for a while. If I would have checked the forums the way I do with anything I work with I guarantee I would not have upgrade to snow leopard after seeing all the people out their with this issue. It is also shameful that apple says it has no knowledge of this problem.

  • Opening Photo Files in Photo Shop CS3 after installing Snow Leopard.

After installing Snow Leopard I could only open photo files in a Preview mode. I called Adobe and Apple and could not get a solution. So I called my local Mac tech person where I got the answer to my problem. What to do: Right click on an image file icon.(Do not open image.) Then go to: Get info. In the dropdown menu, Open with: Select Adobe Photoshop CS3.app or whatever app you desire. Then click change all. You have to do this just one time for each extention such as jpg, tif, etc. Trust this helps.

To try to address the browser problem, reset Safari and see if that helps. Also, try an alternate browser (I use Firefox that way) to see if the problem is system-wide. Also, there is a Safari forum here:

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.4 freezes

For some unknown reason Snow Leopard 10.6.4 freezes randomly. It does not happen too often, but when it does the only way out seems to be to shut down the computer and start it up again.
The only thing it shows is a spinning wheel (not the BBOD) in the center of the screen, but low (just above the dock).
Thinking it might be the HDD starting to have issues, I just replaced it with a brand new one. So the MB now has a clean install (Snow Leopard) that is completely updated (10.6.4, then used migration assistant to move files and settings before swapping it with the old HDD. Everything works fine apart from the freeze).
But the freeze happened again yesterday, and I can not find any other mention of things that could potentially cause this problem.
Any ideas as to the potential source of the problem, how to check, and good suggestions for further actions to avoid a repeat?
    Thanks.

The problem is this issue did not exist with the last version of Virusbarrier. The newest version contains many additional services, like Anti-Phishing, Anti-Spyware, a Firewall in addition to their more traditional "Real Time scanning" for viruses. The pull-down menu allows you to disable these all, one by one. So I have disabled most of the "non-traditional" VirusBarrier features to see which ones are causing the problem. I suspect it is the spyware scanner that's causing the problem.
    We'll see.
Nothing like paying for antivirus/antispyware SW and it's the one causing the problem!

  • Met with a white screen after installing Snow Leopard on Macbook (mid 2007)

After installing Snow Leopard on my Mid 2007 mac book pro I was prompted to restart. I restarted and the computer turned on but only got as far as a white screen that stays white with no further activity for an indefinite amount of time. I've restarted the computer a few times with the same results. How do I fix this and get past the white screen?!

Try booting into "verbose mode".  That will cause a series of messages to appear on the screen during the boot process.  When that stalls (presuming it does so), write down the last few messages and post them as a reply.
You might also try running the diagnostics that came with that Mac.  Depending on the model, you can boot with the "system restore disc" in the machine with the "D" key held down to run those.  Run the diagnostics several times.

  • "Inkjet 4 Quit Unexpectedly" error message after installing Snow Leopard, C410 printer

Can't get printer to print after installing Snow Leopard.  C410 Photosmart Premium All in One Printer.  Keeps saying "Inkjet 4 Quit Unexpectedly".  Wireless test says everything is fine.

If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard or Lion and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Restart your Mac
    Download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907
    Now reset the printing system:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
Finally, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

Can anyone give me some tips or help? Since I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac OS X I cannot print coupons and I cannot scan documents with my Cannon PIXMA MX310. I can print from my computer still I just cant get other applications to work on my printer software. I have considered uninstalling Snow Leopard but not sure about doing that either. I don't know of other glitches yet. I have reinstalled my cannon setup disc but that has not helped. Can I even uninstall Snow Leopard? I have not seen any improvements as far as speed since I installed Snow Leoard, as a matter of fact I have not seen any improvements anywhere since installing it. I used to print coupons from my Mac and I have scanned documents using my Cannon. I have my Cannon Printer installed on my Acer Laptop, w/Windows 7 and everything works good and I can print coupons from my laptop so I feel confident the problem is Snow Leopard. I also wondered if there is a way to share files or network my Acer laptop and my Mac?

OK the first thing I would do is to remove all the Canon software you have installed. Please look to see if it has it's own Uninstall utility, if it doesn't then I'd recommend contacting Canon to ask the best way to uninstall their software. Next thing to do is to physically disconnect the USB cable form the iMac. Then open the Print & Fax System Preference and remove the printer. That is simple to do, open System Preferences - Print & Fax - Highlight the printer on the left pane and click the - symbol at the bottom of the box and close System Preferences. Then I'd recommend the following:
    1. Repairing Disk Permissions (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) highlight the HD on the left, click the First Aid Tab and click Repair Disk Permissions.
    2. Do a SMC reset following these instructions:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
After the computer has restarted, plug the printer into the computer, turn on the computer and open Print & Fax System Preference again. Then make sure the lock is unlocked in the box and click the + symbol in the box on the left and add your printer. Once it is re-installed try to print.

  • MacBook Pro won't wake from sleep after installing Snow Leopard

If my MacBook Pro is running while closed with an external display and I unplug it from the display it goes to sleep - as indicated by the white light and the front pulsing. If I then open the MacBook the display remains blank and it is completely unresponsive to any keys or track pad input.
The only thing it responds to at that point is holding the power button down until it powers down and then restarting - loosing all work in progress at that point.
Before installing Snow Leopard the Mac would wake reliably when opened from this state.

I think I may have found the fix for this. My MacBook Pro was dying in its sleep every time (after installing Snow Leopard), whether it went to sleep automatically or I used a Hot Corner. I went into System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver and changed the screen saver to Flurry, and it works now. I had had it set to a folder containing a single .pct file that I had created.
Good advice Mike! When in doubt check the ScreenSaver settings.
Definitely seems that it has a problem with that pic... In my case, selecting any images instead of the default setting (no screensaver) seems to have cured my non waking issue on my early Macbook Pro in Snow Leopard.
My original problem was that no amount of trackpad input woke it, but the space bar did. The space bar seemed to wake it up with the previous Screen Saver setting. Now trackpad wakes it up (even from total sleep as well as screen saver), too. Might be nice to know about if this is an intended 'feature' as a security trick. Otherwise I consider this a bug.
My vote is that it's a bug.

Your profile shows you are running Snow Leopard. Put the Safari version you now have into the Trash. You need to reinstall Snow Leopard.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Hi John, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Please go to "My Settings"and give us more information about your Mac. It's on this page at upper right ➦
On your  menu choose "About this Mac" and fill in : Version, Model, Processor and Memory. Also, your "available" hard drive space which will will be at the bottom of your Finder window (xx GB available).
Try Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps function correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to Users/(yourname)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
