After Yosemite, Thunderbolt display fails to come on in clamshell mode

I ran Etrecheck and the results were as follows:
Problem description:
Thunderbolt Display doesn’t come on after power up. Also my desktop picture gets changed after display is restored.

  • Yosemite became terribly slow after connecting Thunderbolt display

Macbook pro 2011 16GB memory, SSD (instead of HDD), OS 10.10.1
After updating to Yosemite i realize that everything became very slow, all system is terribly slow. Finder, Safari, any other application. It doesnt matter what i use - OS X yosemite became unusable. In activity monitor - just after connecting THD kernel_task starts using 545% of CPU!!!!
But  after disconnecting Thunderbolt display - everything goes back to normal.
I try to disconnect al external hdd connected to Thunderbolt display - nothing change.
I try to turn off transparency - also no effect at all, the only solution is not to use Thunderbolt display!
    Thunderbolt Bus:
    Firmware Version: 25,1

Please anyone who had the same issue, can you advise something?

TBD is updated to the latest fw, but in Thunderbolt section of system information i got "No device connected", but Graphic/Displays section shows Thunderbolt display Connection Type: DisplayPort

  • Thunderbolt display failed?

Hi I picked up a thunderbolt display second hand to go with my brand new macbook pro 15inch with twin graphics cards.
The display is 8 months old and I saw it working with my new laptop no bother and indeed back at home used it for a round an hour no bother.
Then I played on minecraft on the TB display after a while it sunddenly flickered on and off and so too did the screen on the laptop. then the thunderbolt screen went blackk. And thats where I am.
The ethernet, usbs and isight are all working as too is the sound but there is no display.
I have tried with three different macbooks, two airs and this main one, screen stays black.
None of the macs are even flashing to indicate that its detected a display, its like its not there.
    Any ideas?

Strange. The downloaded dmg file package said that the upgrade was successfully installed, but the App Store still says I need to update. I haven't tried it with my MBP cover open but I'll give that a shot.
    Thanks,

  • Back light only after using thunderbolt display

    Hello,
    I have a new 2012 Macbook pro 17 and a 27 inch thunderbolt display.
The Macbook was working great. Then I connected it to the thunderbolt display and did clamshell mode. That worked well too. But.. then I powered down the macbook, disconnected the thunderbolt dislplay and tried to boot back up again. The mac book powers on, the back light comes on, I hear the chime then that is it. The back light stays on nothing else happens. Resetting the PRAM can not be done. Any of the boot options are ignored. It is like the keyboard is non resposive. I tried all the reset and boot  combinations available but nothing works.
The light on the front of the macbook comes on then goes dim. The apple logo on the lid stays lit, and if I close the lid, the apple logo goes dim and the light on the front lights up. Weird, it is almost like it goes to sleep when it turns on. I tried conntecting the thunderbolt again but no joy. I am really disappointed. This is less than a month old and its already going in for repair. It should be replaced.
    Me No Gusta!

Well, I tried the other reset method too. I removed the battery which was extremely easy. I found a tri tip screw driver I used to open Nintendo Wii's this was a perfect fit for the 3 tri screws that were used to hold in the battery.
Anyway, it still did not work. Wow, I gotta tell you, this apple ****, is complete junk. I just turned a Lenovo into a hackbook. It actually seems faster than the i7 macbook that is screwed up. Never again apple, never again.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't go into sleep mode after connecting Thunderbolt display

    Hi,
after connecting a Thunderbolt display to the 2011 MacBook Pro 13", the system doesn't stay in sleep mode.
When pressing cmd.alt.eject it goes into sleep for 1 or 2 seconds and then goes back on.
everything works fine otherwise and the MacBook goes to sleep without problems if the Thunderbolt display is not attached.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jordi

    I found the problem.
It turns out that it has nothing to do with the Thunderbolt Display, but with Bluetooth and the Magic Trackpad.
When I installed the TD, I also added a wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad that I had been using with another system.
If the option to allow the system to wake up by Bluetooth devices is enabled (system preferences, Bluetooth, advanced), the MacBook Pro will go to sleep and immediately wake up.
Simply disabled that option and everything works fine.
Now I need to open the lid of the MBP to wake up the system. Kind of a huge power button :-)
    Thanks for your help!
    Jordi

  • Macbook Pro Retina trouble with projector after using Thunderbolt display

I used my macbook Pro Retina with my Thunderbolt to VGA adapter all through the fall, and never had any trouble with it. Just before Christmas I got a Thunderbolt display.
Since that time, whenever I connect the projector, I get a black screen. I can see and move the mouse, but nothing else. Other computers still work with the projector.
I'm not certain if the Thunderbolt Display has anything to do with this or not, but it's just the timing that it happened.
Grateful for anyone that can offer help!

It might be that the Thunderbolt output is set to the resolution of the Thunderbolt display, which the VGA adapter probably cannot display correctly.  You can toggle between the video display modes using Command-F1... This will toggle the output between Mirroring and Extended Desktop.  Using Command-F2 will allow you to attempt to detect displays.  It might auto reset to the correct resolution using Command-F2.  If you can get the VGA out to display using extending desktop then you can change the resolution to work properly with the VGA projector.

  • Only 1 of my 2 Thunderbolt displays restarts when coming out of sleep mode now that I have installed Mavericks

    My setup:
    Early 2011 Macbook pro
2 Thunderbolt monitors: one monitor connected to the macbook pro, the second monitor connected to the back of the first monitor
Everything worked great until I installed Mavericks.  Since installing Mavericks, when my laptop comes out of sleep mode only the monitor that is connected to the macbook wakes up.  The second monitor does not wake up.
In order to get the second monitor to wake up I have to either unplug the thunderbolt connection from the back of the first monitor and plug it in again or unplug the first monitor's thunderbolt connection from the macbook and then plug it in again.
I've tried changing the order of the monitors that are connected to the macbook and rebooting the machine as well.  Nothing works.  Help?

Okay thanks, but I am a newbie who is not a very tech kind of a person. The only periphals I have are a kodak camera dock, a Canon 310 copier/fax/scanner and a pair of altec speakers. How do I determine  if they all have drivers for my MAC? They all seem to work okay, if that is a sign, though the Kodak camera Dock is a bit slow. How also do I determine if they are Apple energy compatible? With each of these peripherals, do I simply disconnect them from my MAC one at a time to see if there improvement?

  • How to keep display on Macbook Pro instead of Clamshell Mode

I have an extended desktop through a Mini-Display Port-to-VGA connection from my Macbook Pro (OSX Mountain Lion) to an external monitor. I have the Macbook Pro screen set up as the "main screen" (with the display bar on top). But everytime I close my macbook pro, the computer goes into clamshell mode and sets the extended desktop as my "main screen" which switches my display bar. Is there anyway to tell OSX ML to always keep the Macbook Pro screen as the default and not go into clamshell mode?
This also creates a problem when I want to physically close my computer to allow to sleep, but instead goes into clamshell mode and extends the desktop to my external display. Any ideas?

    this is from another discussion:
    jk10003
Re: MacBook doesn't sleep when closing lid with external monitor attached with Lion     Oct 14, 2011 7:01 PM    (in response to admgtz)
I would like to offer this solution.  I have a MacBook Pro with an external monitor, and, for a year and a half both displays slept when I closed the MBPS.  This behavior stopped when I installed Lion.  They would sleep when I removed the power cord, but what a pain that would be.  The command "pmset -g assertions" gave no indication of which process ought be preventing sleep.
I contacted Apple support, and after some searching, the guy working with me found this thread, which was flagged as an Apple-approved solution:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190417?start=165&tstart=0
    This is the important part:
Correct AnswerRe: How do I tell Lion to disable the LCD screen even when the lid is open?
    Aug 31, 2011 9:56 AM (in response to Bob_viking)
Here's the command to make your laptop behave like it did Pre-Lion (courtesy of my friend):
    sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
Works perfectly for me. If it screws up your system, just zap the PRAM next boot (cmd-opt-p-r) and you'll be back to the default Lion state. Or if you can still get into terminal, this command will get you back to Lion's default state as well:
    sudo nvram -d boot-args
    Enjoy!
One snag was that I had to run it with the external monitor disabled, but it worked great!

  • X301 problems after installing driver updates - won't come out of sleep mode

We have a new X301 with Vista 32 installed. Things were working fine until I ran system update the other day. I've set the power options so not shutdown hibernate, however, after a period of time the system seems to go to sleep or to a screen saver and will not come out of whatever state it is in. The only solution is to power off/on the system.
I have an X500 where there were display driver problems if there was an external monitor (dual monitor) attached. The only thing I can think of is that either there is some similar issue with the X301 since we have an external monitor attached or there is something that was messed up with the drivers that were installed. I do have (for now) restore points before these drivers were installed but I'm not ready to take that drastic step yet (or a full system restore and start over).
Anyone experience this type of issue or have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Neil

Sadly, I had the issue resurface today. It went into standby/sleep mode while I was in a meeting (on battery power), and later I tried to wake it, and all I got was a black screen with a mouse cursor.
The keyboard brightness and volume keys on the keyboard were responsive (I could hear the audio level clicks as I changed it), but the visual overlay didn't show (where it shows the white speaker graphic with the bar of rectangles representing volume level). Also, the screen brightness keys did nothing.
I finally used Ctrl + Cmd + Power to force a restart. Luckily, my user account didn't get completely hosed like it did a couple weeks ago.
So, it looks like Migration Assistant isn't the culprit here. This is the system I just finished rebuilding. So it's either a bug in OS X/Mavericks, or it's due to an application I have running, or a configuration change I've made.
It seems to only happen when I'm on battery power, for what that's worth. I don't recall it ever happening when I'm plugged in. I have Power Nap disabled while on battery power, btw.
I'm going to enable SSH access so I can try to SSH in the next time this happens. Perhaps that will provide useful diagnostic info.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

  • After Yosemite install MacBook Pro only starts up in Recovery Mode

    Hi,
I installed Yosemite on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13" yesterday and when restarting it after the installation, it starts up in Recovery Mode. When I verify the disk in Disk Utility, it says there is no problem. I would reinstall OS X but it says I don't have enough free disk space do to that (I have around 9.5 GB). But in Recovery Mode I cannot delete files to free up disk space (at least I don't know how to do it). My latest Time Machine backup is quite old (my fault, I know...), so now I am stuck...
Could anyone help me, I am becoming quite worried and stressed now.:(
    Thank you LOADS in advance!!!

Some would consider what you have to be an adware issue, in that the product is of no
help to the Mac OSX, the computer, or your use of it as intended.

  • Silverlight (Lovefilm / Netflix) MBP 13" Early 2011, Heating and Exhaust Problems, Clamshell mode with TB Display

    Hi all
I was hoping if someone can help me out...
    I have a:
    Mac Book Pro 13" (Early 2011) (i5, Crucial 8GB RAM, 120 OWC 6G SSD)
    Apple Thunderbolt Display
I run my MBP in clamshell mode always.
Whenever i run Netflix or Lovefilm video in full screen using either Firefox, Chrome or Safari. The Silverlight plug-in is hogging the CPU.
My exhaust (CPU fan) goes crazy, its soo loud its annoying while your trying to watch a movie on your Thunderbolt Display.
    Temperature reaches: 83 Celsius
    Fan (Exhaust): 5620 - 6200 RPM (immediately jumps from 2001 to 5620 / 6200)
If i watch a movie full screen on my 13" MBP with my Thunderbolt display disconnected:
    Temperature reaches:  81 Celsius
Fan (Exhaust): 3198 RPM (it slowly crawls up form 1998 to 3193)
Now i changed my resolution on my Thunderbolt disply to 1420x720 and it helps with the fans going crazy, they slow down slightly...
I've tried a PRAM and SMC Reset, all my firmware is up to date.
My Macbook Pro is slightly raised at the back so air can flow through the vents.
My FANS are just going crazy!! something is ridicously heating up internally in my machine causing them to go mental.
You just cannot watch a movie on netflix or lovefilm on your thunderbolt display comfortably if your fans go beyound 2800RPM.
I even installed Windows 7 on Virtual Box and tried running lovefilm / silverlight and it did not help my problem.
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP! how can i keep my fans below 2800 RPM while running silverlight?!?!

Flash like Silverlight are CPU heavy applications.
The MacBook Pro can be run in clamshell mode but only when not running extremely CPU intensive tasks
    like what you are doing.
If you keep the mac book running this way for too long you might stress the materials and run into danger of getting thermal damages.
Chrome is actually in recent time getting very slow and I noticed in a comparision test that Firefox provides me up to 30 to 40% more free CPU time.
If running netflix I would suggest currently NOT using Chrome.
Windows 7 virtualized inside virtual box and then on top netflix is uhm a pretty bad idea because all those three things together are already CPU hogs.

  • Can't stop Thunderbolt display from flickering white lines after firmware update (Yosemite)

I am having serious issues after the Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2. Running Yosemite on MacBook Pro and I am now getting white lines that gradiate from the bottom to the top of my screen across multiple browsers, apps and even the finder window anytime I move my mouse. I cannot take a screenshot (it stops when I try) but I posted a video here:
    http://youtu.be/3zOKL1JFp5M
It is impossible to work this way and after 20 minutes of watching my screen constantly refresh anytime I move my mouse I am feeling nauseous.
Is there anyway to UNINSTALL this firmware update? I was not having this kind of problem before. Every once in awhile I was finding my Thunderbolt display would not wake up after sleep and I thought the firmware update would fix that, not cause more, crazier problems. It is causing this gradiating line problem on my Thunderbolt display AND my MacBook Pro screen, which is even more bizarre.

I updated and no issues with my 2012 Mini so may be computer related.  I believe once a firmware has been "burned" into the chip it cannot be redone.

  • External (thunderbolt) display not working at all when in clamshell mode

I have a brand new macbook pro (2014).  With a thunderbolt display and external keyboard/mouse attached, I use the computer as a 'desktop' all the time (lid closed).  Always worked fine, until I upgraded to Yosemite.  Now, either the machine doesn't boot at all, OR (even more strangely), it takes many minutes to boot up, and the animation of fades and also the mouse cursor jump around extremely slowly--the interface is completely unusable and I have to open the display and manually force a shutdown by holding the power button down.  Without an external monitor attached, everything seems to work just fine.
Has anyone else experienced this, and has anyone found a work around?
    Thank you,
Frustrated with Apple's apparent software quality decline,
    Mark

Ran Etrecheck and my results are:

If there's anyone out there that can help please...
I am running the latest firmware on the TBD and all software is up to date as you can see.

  • Thunderbolt display has stopped working with my mac mini

I purchased a brand new thunderbolt display and mac mini a couple of months ago, and now the thunderbolt display no longer comes on when I start the mac (I am only able to type this here because I pulled out my old monitor and plugged it in to the mac mini via hdmi port, which seems to work just fine).
I have so far shut down and re start my mac a couple of times. I have unplugged everything and started them back up a couple of times, but nothing seems to work. How can I get this fixed? I have to admit that I feel like a shmuck for paying this much money for a monitor and then have it stop working.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.
OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system  also Yosemite
Is the printer attached to the computer or is it a network printer?
