Afterburner Fan Speed

Sorry didn't know where to go to post my little concern
But i'd like to know why i can't put my GPU Fan higher than 85% with MSI Afterburner program on my Geforce GTX580?

Cause its balanced at that level, over 85 is too noise and no need to go over it.

  • MSI Afterburner Fan speed?

i have a MSI Radeon HD 5970 g.c. and i recently adjusted fan speed to cool off to about 35 degrees C when pc starts.
to do this i raised fan speed to about 60%.
normally, the fan comes on and while progressively cooling my g.c. it cycles down to a lower fan speed.
just recently though, the fan has stopped cycling down after startup or during gameplay that causes lots of heat, cycling up to account for the heat.
i have MSI afterburner v2.0.0 with latest graphics drivers and what not(im pretty sure, as of feb. 4,2011)
is this a common problem or is there something simple i can do to fix?

Try downloading Afterburner 2.1.0 Beta 7 here and see if that changes anything.
The one you have is older and known to have issues.
    Edit:
Here's a quote with from the changes they made:
    Quote
Fan control settings are now being forcibly reapplied after changing the clocks via unofficial overclocking path to bypass bug in AMD driver causin the fan control settings to be reset to defaults after programming PowerPlay table
So that might be the problem you have.

  • MSI HD 7850 1GB GDDR5 OC edition Fan speed problem

    Hello all.
I have some strange issue with my graphic card and fan i think. I have noticed that, when my monitor goes to sleep (or when I manually turn off), after few minutes (7-8-9-10) I can loudly hear GPU fan acceleration. And it happens every few minutes. So, everything is ok few minutes, and after that, again I can hear that annoying sound, the sound of accelerated fan. That happens only, but only when the monitor is switched off (whether it manually or automatically switched off).
I bought this video just 2 months ago, as well as other components of the computer. So, everything is practically new.
I have tested my graphic card with MSI Kombustor v. 2.4, and everything was fine. Temperatures, FPS, and all that stuf was fine.
I've never had a problem in any game so far. Everything working fine on high details all kind of games. Temperatures are pretty
normal. In a fact, I think that is temperature is lower than some average. I have a problem only with horizontal lines, but that is because i have monitor with VGA output. As a mather of fact, barely notice them. And, I have instaled latest 13.4 drivers. I deleted the old version with driver sweeper. And in an earlier version of driver was the same problem...
Again, the problem arises when my monitor is off. I have tested with MSI Afterburner 2.2.5 beta and GPU-Z 0.7.0.
All settings in both of programs are on default. So, that numbers at paragraph RMP, when monitor is off, max is 1563. That is 400 more than when monitor is on.
I have tried to test when is minimum usage of GPU fan is 40% (i just clicked on "user define" button on the right side of "fan speed"), and then, RMP number would be 1700 or even more.
    When monitor is off:
    When monitor is on:
So, everything is perfect when monitor is on, again. I don't think that is normal, and I beg for help. Is there any kind of solution to fix this problem? Please. I am thankful in advance. Sorry for my bad English.
    P.S.
I wanted to upload pictures, but forum does not allow me. Or, I don't know how to do that. I only want to show values...

Usualy, i left Opera, uTorrent, Skype in backround. Then, I shut down the programs, and only programs in background are Avast 8 and Realtek Audio Manager (both are in system tray). No matter if you leave a program in the background or not, it's the same.
I really have never met with this type of problem and I have no idea how to fix that. If I complain to the seller, he would run tests like I did, and everything would be ok. And when  I would told him about the fan problem, probably would have told me that everything is okay...
I don't know what to try, really...

  • Cannot adjust R5870 Lightning fan speed

    Hi @all!
    I have a big problem:
The catalyst-center and the afterburner show me options to slow down or speed up the vga-fan - but both do not work.
It seems again as made for the reference design with one fan.
How do I control the fan speed of my brand new R5870 Lightning 2-fan card?
    Any ideas?
    THX!
    EH

    Okay. THX so far... :-(
I want to get that damn thing silent!
    What about watercooling this card?
As far as I know, I need the plate (80,-) a water pump (40,-) a radiator (30,-) aquabox (40,-) and so on and so on... right?
So should I take the pc and walk to the next pc-shop to get the right parts?
Any better ideas? I still have the possibility to return the card to get a more quiet one - but that's a bad feeling... :-)

  • Fan Speed will not adjust/Too Noisy

I just installed my new MSI R6670 card.  This card was reviewed as being very quiet but I immediately thought just the opposite.  It sounds like the fans are running at 100% all the time overwhelming the sound of all other fans in my system.
The CD came with AMD's 8.84 driver so instead I went ahead and downloaded the latest 11.6 and included catalyst control center.  CCC acted like it was adjusting the fan speed but there was no change in sound - like the fans were still running at full speed even though it said they were not.  So I uninstalled CCC but left the 11.6 driver in place and installed MSI's Afterburner software.  In the left hand pane it claimed the speed was set to Auto and currently at 44%.  But in the hardware monitor section it lists the speed as 0% with occasional blips but mostly staying at zero.  Turning off auto control and dragging the fan speed slider all the way to the slow side and clicking "apply" seems to have no impact on the sound and the hardware monitor keeps reading zero.  Its showing the temperature at a steady 39 which doesn't seem excessive.  Its looking to me like the software may not be able to monitor the fan speed so its just staying at 100% all the time.
Please help!  I bought this card because the Radeon 6670 was supposed to be the most powerful card that would run without its own PCIe power cable and also because the reviews said it was very quiet.  Right now it is anything but quiet!

I just pulled the card and disconnected the wire.  They are definitely 4 wire fans.  FYI Afterburner is crap as far as telling you what the fan speed is.  When I put the card back in I left the wire disconnected and briefly started the system with the card running fanless.  Afterburner still showed the fan speed as whatever the it was SUPPOSED to be running and showed the speed increasing with temperature, even though the actual fan speed was zero.  So their software isn't even actually monitoring the speed.  It is just telling you what the fan speed should be not what it is.  Going through the threads on this forum, I'm seeing several others with different models of MSI cards having this same problem.

  • Fan speed question

    Greetings,
After having some problems playing watch dogs on pc and looking for solutions on the internet I started to notice that my graphics card was producing alot of heat when i was touching it (my case is open on one side & don't ask why :/ ). I started googling and i came upon MSI Afterburner in which you can manually change the speed of the fan.
I changed the settings of the fan speed a little bit, but since i'm no expert i wanted to ask how the other pcgamers would handle this 'fan tab', since i'm no expert on pc hardware/software. I did play a bit yesterday with these settings and i did not get a single crash so i think it has worked allready. I noticed that the speed increased as a was playing and i don't think my card does that automaticly when its getting hot.
I don't care so much about the noise when i'm gaming since i don't pay attention to that (and i could turn the volume up) but i read somewhere that you shouldn't use the fan speed at +70% all the time since it could break sooner.
Here's an image to show you how i arranged it. Its in dutch but i think everyone will still be able to understand the graph (^_^)
I'm using an amd radeon hd 7800 card btw.
Thanks in advance and if you need other information, pls let me know

Well, touching is not a valid way to check if a card gets too hot but checking temps in load and idle with Afterburner. If you want it to be the coolest possible you can of course use a more agressive fan profile with Afterburner that is active as long as Afterburner runs no matter what program you are using besides (browsing internet, running games or whatever). Fan speed will use the steps you predefinded in Afterburner according to the current temps. Don't woryy higher fan speed will not cause a noticeable limitation of the fans lifespan.

  • 560GTX TI HAWK fan speed?

So I just got a new 560GTX TI HAWK (Bios 70.24.11.00.00) not overclocked, and the bios switch on performance.
I was looking around in Afterburner and I noticed that when the fan speed is at 85% it runs at the full 4500rpm same as if it was at %100, so is the max the fans can go up to 85% or is there something wrong with my card?

I just checked mine and about the same, 4560 RPM and no difference between 85-100%. It appears then that max fan speed RPM is when it hits 85%.

  • Changing the default fan speeds

I have a MSI GTX 760 and I would like to change the default fan speeds. I can do this in MSI Afterburner, but this is a multi user pc and I want the fan speed to be for every user?

Hmm guess best answer is, Just dont get a msi display card. If there not going to fix a problems with fan speed's.
And MSI gaming app in OC mode makes the fan go no faster than 35%, click normal mode and go's higher.
Just use Gpu-z run test and watch the temp increase. 1 of the ways i have tested.
I feel quite let down as this is not the first time I have reported this and asked for help.
This thread just seems to be for UEFI bios.

  • Unlock Fan Speed

I have an HP ENVY 14 1111nr pc. It has an i5, 6Gb or RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card. I just want to know how you unlock the fan speed on this laptop. I know there is a way because I have friends at school that tell me its possible, but I just dont know how. Lately my pc has been running warm, and I want to be able to control the fan speed.

Thanks, already know my way around Afterburner though . Its limited to 80% max fan speed... thats the issue! I want to unlock the 100% fan speed.
I downloaded the newest GTX 580 BIOS from the MSI website, and modified it with NiBiTor. There are numerous articles on how to do, and flash the BIOS properly, with a google search.

  • 460GTX Hawk noisy at certain fan speeds

    Hi everyone
I wonder if someone has some insight into my problem - recently I noticed my system becoming very noisy at certain points during games, and after countless reinstallations of Windows and even a power-supply swap-out, I found the source of the problem - it's the Hawk. Now here's the strange bit - the noise that I'm hearing isn't the sound of the fan, it's a buzzing kind of sound (maybe coil whine? It sounds very similar to a "processor activity" noise, if that makes sense), and it only occurs when the fan speed is between about 55%-70% of the maximum - above 70%, the noise disappears entirely. Has anyone encountered a similar issue, or figured out what causes it?
    Thanks!

I haven't put the video card in another machine, but I'm absolutely certain that it does come from the video card - I tested by adjusting the fan speed in afterburner, as soon as it reaches 55% the noise kicks in, and as soon as I push the fan speed up past 68%, the noise stops. I've had the card just over a year now, and this problem only began in the last month and a half or so.

  • MSI GTX 460 1 Gb OC & NiBiTor, fan speed mod

A dew days ago, i purchased an MSI GTX 460 1 GB OC graphics card.
    This one:
    http://hr.msi.com/product/vga/N460GTX-M2D1GD5-OC.html
Problem is, fan is too loud at idle. I've tried using MSI Afterburner but it won't let me
go lower than 40%, which is too much. As Svet is no longer able to mod BIOS (which i perfectly
understand when we look at number of requests he received daily  ) i tried to do it myself.
I saved BIOS with GPU-Z and opened it with NiBiTor. I found an option to change minimum fan speed
from 40 to 30. But, problem is that NiBitoR puts red dot at the "integrity" check, immediately when
I open it. Does this means that NibiTor was unable to properly read BIOS information? Does this mean that I can't safely save a BIOS and will damage my card if I try to flash a card with modded BIOS?
NibiTor is version 6.02. My card is MSI N460GTX M2DIGD5
    S/N 602-V232-150B1101136247

My e-mail?  There is nothing there.
I think that GPU-Z has some problems saving my BIOS. When i use nvflash
saving option (from DOS), Nibitor shines a green dot whan i opened BIOS with it!
I've sent an e-mail with BIOS to Svet, but with the version extracted with GPU-Z. I think
    that BIOS was corrupt...

  • SOLVED: GTX 770 Fan Speed Stuck at Full

Ever since I set up my GTX 770 in my computer, the fan speed appears to be set on full constantly. I have tried to use MSI Afterburner to solve the problem, but to no avail as adjusting the fan speed curve in Afterburner seems to do nothing. As soon as it boots, the fans ramp up to what sounds like max and stay like that. I was wondering if there was anyone else with this problem and if I can fix it.
    Thanks in advance,
    muddyducky
EDIT: Turns out it was actually every other fan in my computer running at 4000rpm that caused it - managed to turn it down in MSI Control Centre :P

Do you still have a question/problem?

  • GTX 560 TI HAWK 82-84'c at 100% fan speed

    Hello
I've noticed my hawk becoming VERY loud while playing games, Final Fantasy XIV and Deus EX: Human Revolution to name a couple. I downloaded Afterburner to see what the temperatures were and I'm astounded to see my card at 82'c at near 100% fan speed. I have the fan profile on performance mode and I have a well ventilated Cooler Master Storm Sniper with 3 200mm fans at the top, front, and side and one 120mm fan at the rear. My ambient room temperature is about 24'c so it's not my room temp.
    Here's a screenshot while FF14 is running.
Touching the side support brace bar is hot to the touch.
EVERYTHING is at the default clock speed/voltage.
I think the cooler or something with the card is defective!
Should I set up a RMA ASAP?
    If I should:
How long is the RMA process?
Does MSI offer an advance RMA service similar to EVGA?

If you don't cause any physical damage to the card there should be no problem.
Svet, is that what you use to clean it, Jim Beam whiskey and a cross peen hammer to scrape the gooey stuff off? You should be using Everclear 190 proof instead, 151 proof at the very least.
Maybe I should check mine just to be sure. I took a look at my 465 last week and found the HSF mounting screws were loose.

What are those arrows? is that where i get to unscrew the entire cooling pipes away from the graphic board?
Just to check with you the pipes and fans are meant to be removed and installed back - right? I meant they are not glued or riveted in - correct?
The arrows shows the 4 for screws which you have to unscrew 1st.
Yes, they hold the entire heatsink+fans to the VGA's PCB

They are not riveted, only the screws hold them.
There is TIM which works like a glue, which also holds the heatink to the GPU chip surface.
Once you unscrew all 4 screws, then you need to take off the entire heatsink,
don't use force, don't push it directly in up direction, start with small slides the entire heatsink as it makes contact with GPU's chip surface where the TIM is installed and works as glue, so start slide little by little, not too much and not too sharply cause the heatsink can hit and broke some of the PCB capacitors.
Just use little and small slides until you feel that heatsink is now disconnected from the TIM/GPU surface, then take it off carefully.
You have to disconnect FAN cable from PCB as well.

  • Fan speeds

I have a question about fan speeds.
I have an MSI GTX 670 P.E. which is great, and matches up nicely with my i7 3770k, and I wouldn't really say I have a "problem" - but I am curious about something someone told me which I think may not be correct.
Is there a downside to running your fans at high RPMs for long periods?   Most of the time my card is nice and cool and the fans stay at the default 30% or 1100 RPMs with great temps (its 21C right now idle), but during marathon BF3 sessions I have a profile of 70% which I've found keeps the card below 70C.  Yes, I know 70C is still below the thermal limit (which I think is 90 something?) but I like my rig running cool.  I spent a lot of time getting my Ivy Bridge set up just right and liquid cooled - with plenty of good air flow in my case (plus extra case fans).  So I like to keep the graphics card cool as well.  Plus I'm getting Crysis 3 and I figured it'll push things even harder and hotter.
This all started when my friend (whom I consider a lot more knowledgeable about builds than I am) came to see my rig and he noticed my Afterburner profile was running at 70% fan speed.  He warned me about running my fan at 70% or above for long periods.  He told me I will shorten the life of the card by running the fan that high for long stretches - plus he said it gets too loud.  I don't think its really that noisy, plus I usually wear headphones anyway so that's not really an issue for me.
Is he right about the speeds though?  Should I keep it around 50%?  If I set the profile to 50% the card gets around 75C on BF3.
On a side note I've considered checking and changing the TIM paste to see if that lowers it a few degrees, but I'm thinking that's kind of unnecessary at this point.
I poked around here but didn't see many comments about problems from running the Twin Frozr fans at high speeds for long periods.
    Thanks.

    Isn't 670 a kepler gpu?
So it doesn't matter what is maximum temperature which GPU can handle.
What matters is You don't want to EVER go higher than 70 degrees, because if You do You're passing first throttle point and loosing 13 MHz on core. Second point is probably 80 degrees, after 85 third.
Yeah, I don't think that's right.  I have seen it get all the way to 79c (just feeling it out a little and playing with overclocking on FarCry 3), and I saw absolutely no throttling down.  It was still kickin' ass but I never exceeded power limit.
