Age/model of my hand-me-down iMac?

where can i easily find age/model of my hand-me-down iMac?

Go to the Finders menu... Click on the Apple logo... About this Mac... Click on the OS Version text until the serial number comes up.
That's the serial number for the Mac.

  • Can't shut down iMac

I am running Snow Leopard on iMac 09 model, Safari refuses to shut down... even after clicking shut down multiple times.
How can I terminate the safari process?
    Thanks.

Hold down the option key, right/control-click on the Safari icon in the dock and select 'Force Quit' (it will always be the lower most option).
Note that you can do this with any running application...and if that app is truly hung (or the computer is slow to keep up at that instant), the pop-up dialog will say 'Application not responding...'

  • Is it possible to re-register a hand me down itouch

Is it possible to re-register a hand me down Itouch? My daughter upgraded from her 8GB ITouch and gave it to me, I would like to have it say my name and allow me to download upgrades etc but it will not allow unless I have her information.

  • My hand me down MPC keeps repeating the start up chime and nothing comes on and no buttons have any effect. Any ideas?

MY "hand me down" Mac Book Pro has decided that it will not boot up. I just get the first chime repeating over and over and none of the keys seem to have any effect at all. I cannot get into safe mode etc. My nearest Apple S tore is about 40 miles away. Any ideas out there?

    Alanmeats,
Do you know the year of production (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011")?
    Never mind - it looks as if it's a mid-late 15" 2009.
It's sounds as if your problem is something mechanical - a bad drive, something, that will simply not allow the system to boot. Do you have the discs that originally came with the machine (gray discs)? If so, you can try booting from Disc One and see if you can boot into recovery mode. If not, you'll need to call Apple, with your serial number handy, and purchase a set of the machine-specific discs that came with the system (10.4.9 or 10.4.10 or perhaps even 10.5).
Then you can see if you've a hardware or system problem.

  • I recently got a hand-me-down Macbook (white) 2010 and want to restore to factory settings. The computer did not come with any discs. It is running 10.6.8 and I purchased 10.6.3 recently to upgrade my MacBook Pro. Can I use that to restore the MacBook?

I want to give the hand-me-down to my kids so they will stay off my MacBook Pro I'd like to start fresh with the MacBook, remove all the former owners information, restore it to factory settings, but it did not come with any installation discs, so I don't know what to do. I recently purchased Snow Lepoard for my 2008 MacBook Pro. Can I use that to restore the MacBook? Also, the former owner purchased Microsoft Office (ugh) with the computer but again, no installation discs. How do I keep that when I restore?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

I purchased a mini to HDMI cable and tried to connect to the TV but the TV is not recognizing the computer. I attempted to set sound and display settings under the "my Preferences" utility with no success.  Again, I'm not sure if I need to upgrade my OS software Any Suggestions?

  • Hand me down computer with no ethernet hookup.....

hi there.  im wondering id there is any hope for my situation.  my daughter inherited a hand-me-down computer (and its actually very nice.)  it does not have an ethernet connection because it had never been used for the internet, just for the previous kids to play their cd-roms on.
we have 2 computer in our house already connected thru our linksys wrt54g v8 router.  mama compter is hard-wired, and my baby laptop is wireless.   we wanted to add the step-child computer to the network and especially so my daughter can have internet.
we bought a usb wireless adapter and got everything ready to go until i doscovered that i can not for the life of me find the linksys installation cd! *slapping self upside head*
i did go to the suport page for the wrt54g v8 and downloaded the following:
pdf - users guide,  pdf - data sheet,  text doc - release notes,  and a .bin  called:
    FW_WRT54Gv8_800.6.005_20080616.0
i have trensferred it to the s-c computer with the memory stick, but there it sits because i domt know how to open a .bin file and if i did, i dont what to do with it if it were opened or read or whatever the file is  supposed to do.
and furthernore (*grin*) i dont even know if this file ive downloaded and copied to the s-c computer is even the file needed for installation of if its just an upgrade to firmware.
is there any hope for the step-child computer or is it doomed unless i get a in-board adapter with ethernet?  the thought process on that prospect is this free hand-me-down computer is starting to add up as weve already boaught a mouse and keyboard as well as the usb wireless adapter.  if im SOL on getting linksys installed to this computer im gonna be so so so sad.
with that said, if i am SOL, please break it to me gently.

  • Clean install (?) for handing down iMac

I've just received my MBP and would like to know how to 'clean' my current iMac's drive for use by another family member. I don't have any concerns security wise, but would just like to give them a 'like new' machine to start with (their first mac).
Can I just load the Leopard CD that came with the iMac, will that wipe my stuff off of the machine so they are left with a clean install?

There is no such thing as a "clean install" in OSX. To reset your current Mac to factory as when you got it boot from the OS installer disk (disk 1) that came with your Mac and do an Erase & Install. Proceed with the install using disk 2 when it asks and finally when the Mac reboots and you see the Welcome wait until there is a choice to select your language then Quit and shut down the Mac. the next time it is booted up the new owner can set it up they way they want.

  • New 27" iMac taking ages to boot up and shut down

i JST bought, literally a week ago, a new 27" imac core 2 duo and it takes forever to boot up and shut down
    boot up: 30 - 40mins
shutdown: undetermined (shut down at 1am, was still shutting down at 7am when i got up for work!)
    anyone any ideas?

For the startup part, I would reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and once it gets to the Desktop, open System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. Make sure your internal drive is selected (highlighted) as the startup disk choice.
Not sure about the shutdown issue, since there are many potential causes. One could be a running process that is having a problem quitting. Try starting up and then immediately shutting down (give it a few minutes to fully start up but shut down before you run anything else). Does it shut down quickly, or do you have the same problem?

  • How to determine age of hand-me down PB

I have a 17" PB G4 and need to know how old it is.
It was purchased by a faculty m ember and paperwork was lost.
    Thanks!

    Hi
If you still have the serial number written on the inside of the battery bay (or, from the Apple menu, under About This Mac, and click twice on the OS X version number), you can find out the original purchase date from Apple here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/
(enter the serial in the "About Support Coverage" box on the lower right side of the page).
If this isn't successful, you can get a more approximate date by looking at http://apple-history.com and comparing your specs with the listings and manufacturing dates.

  • Can anyone ID this problem? Finder icon started bouncing, unresponsive, now Safe Mode reboot stops 1/3 in and shuts down iMac. Virus?

This started yesterday. I switch on the computer, go into my User account and the Finder icon was bouncing in the deck while a window flashed on about Restoring Windows though you could never click on it because...it kept flashing. The folders on my desktop disappeared so I went into a secondary user account and opened it to find a virus scan. That user account had no issue with the bouncing Finder icon. I downloaded ClamXav and ran it but that being a rarely used user account, it found nothing infected. I went back in in Safe Mode and was able to see my invisible files but the Finder being unresponsive, I could basically only look at them. Also, I couldn't activate ClamXav after downloading it in that user account. All it did was allow me to see my files.
This morning, while I switched on the computer the Safe Mode came on without me holding down the Shift key. Sadly, it didn't get past the third of the little progress bar before shutting down the computer. This happened trying to open either user accounts. I'm shut out. I'm so shocked this happened. I called the ISP and he said everything was normal at his end, naturally in spite of a lot of freezing and not allowing more than one device on wifi at a time. This is an upgraded Internet service after moving to a new place. Otherwise for the few moments it lights up to show me the two users at log in, nothing is visually wrong.
If this has ever happened to anyone, please enlighten me. I've called a Mac repair shop and expect to bring my iMac in. It's barely two years old. : (

  • UPS shutting down iMac

I need some help. I have an iMac 21" (brand new). For some reason the computer goes to sleep and then shuts down completely. I am assuming it has something to do with the UPS setting in the system preferences. My question is 1. how doe I set them correctly to stop this problem? or 2. How do I turn off the UPS altogether? PLEASE HELP!!!
    Thanks!

You can start by telling the forum the make/model and capacity of the UPS. And what settings you are using. Do you have a device (KillAWatt) or UPS itself to tell you what you are using? And anything else on the same circuit as the UPS can be a factor.
