Aggregate Device "3/4" won't work in Garageband

Last week, we tried to create an "Aggregate Device" out of 3 or 4 microphones. One was the macbook's built-in mic, one was a USB headset, and another was a desktop microphone. This setup worked fine, and worked very well for our podcasting needs.
However, when we tried to record this week, Garageband wouldn't allow us to use all of the inputs. We would select the "Aggregate Device (3/4)" option from the menu for track settings, and it would constantly just switch to "Aggregate Device (1/2)". Playing around with the different recording settings allowed the USB Headset to record, but it wouldn't allow to do all of the inputs we had specified. We've tried everything, from setting up a new Aggregate Device to recording with alternative programs such as Audacity, and have had no success as of yet. What do we need to do to fix the issue? Is this a driver-based error, a software bug, or is it possibly an issue with CoreAudio?

So I only need the MIDI out cable plugged into the INPUT port on my keyboard?
No, the other way round: From the keyboard's OUT to the interface's IN.
I looked at the GB's preferences, and yes, it says that there is 1 Midi device recognized. However, it's strange that this happens before I even plug the Midi cables into the keyboard.
That's perfectly o.k. The midi device is the interface - the computer can't know whether there's something plugged into the device's input.
Oh, and by the way, the thunks I hear when I test the Midi connection in Audio Midi aren't distinguished between different keys. It's one constant note for all of the keys.
I think that's how it's supposed to work - it should just indicate that there's midi data coming in.
Here's another test: If you switch the LED display that normally shows the position of the playhead to the tuning fork symbol, it should display the notes and chords that you play on your keyboard - does that work?

    Hi BobRz
Thanks for you suggestion but it didn't work - are there other ways for solving this problem? Or is it because my files that I want to copy and paste onto my hard disk etc are too big? (However there is space on my hard disk and it works on a PC)

  • Yamaha KX49 won't work with GarageBand

I just got it today, I installed the CuBase software because my computer wouldn't recognize the keyboard, and THAT didn't work. I tried a million different things and my computer is twice as slow in the process. What the **** am I doing wrong? I just wanna learnt the piano, and this is getting really frustrating.

I noticed I was having this problem with my Yamaha UX-16 and its Yamaha USB MIDI driver. I would get this dialog box error that says "Alert Cannot access to a driver." And then System Preferences would crash and of course we have this:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x0000000000000026
So I read where someone said that creating a new user fixes it. So I created a new user and of course that fixed it. But I also noticed where the guy said that he copied the Preferences folder from the new user to the old user and that fixed it for the old user. But why should it? I had a sneaking suspicion that permissions were involved. I was right. (Can I please say: I FRAKKING HATE PERMISSIONS!!)
As it turns out here is the cause of all our woes. Are you ready for this?
    drumroll plz
The group of the folders in your Users/YourUser/ directory need to all be "staff" ....... that's it. Especially Users/YourUser/Library/Preferences ... once I set its group to "staff" then it worked.
PS -- to set it to staff, go to terminal and type su and then enter. Then type your password. Next type chown YourUser:staff /Users/YourUser/Library/Preferences ... you can also type ls -l to see what all folders in /Users/YourUser directory are set to groups other than staff. In my case, a lot of them were set to wheel instead... I have no idea why. I also don't know why farking Disk Utility is not smart enough to fix this! Give me a break Apple!
I strongly feel that the "permissions" system is the WORST feature of OS X, and it needs to be fixed or just plain done away with. I know that it supposedly makes the system more secure. But there weren't permissions in OS 9 and it was arguably even more secure than OS X. What's the point of permissions anyway if someone can just take an OS X install DVD and reset your password? LOL!
If you're going to keep permissions, Apple, then you need to make them easier to understand. Don't have group names like "wheel" and "staff" that are super-confusing and make no sense at all. I mean, seriously, nothing in the computer should be called "wheel," it's the most counter-intuitive and hard-to-understand thing I've ever heard of in my entire life, except for Jolly Ranchers brand Jello. If you're going to have a permissions repair feature in Disk Utility, which gives the user the impression that their permissions have been fixed, then you need to make sure *that it actually works*! Please!

  • Help? Aggregate devices not working in Lion

Since buying a new Mac Mini Server for my audio work using Logic Pro 9 I cannot use aggregate devices. The system preferences as well as audio midi setup will not remember my aggregate devices that I create. Also when using them the audio becomes glitchy and a terrible noise happens.  I didnt have any issues like this in 10.6.8.  I cannot believe that Apple would let this happen for so long. There are many people in the pro audio world that rely on using aggregate devices and with them not working three versions into Lion this has become maddening.
This is not a third party issue. This is not a hardware issue. This is a serious problem that takes the saying that "Macs just WORK" and flushes it right down the toilet.
I spoke w a guy named Steve at Apple pro audio and he couldnt get me off the phone fast enough.  What the ____ Apple??
PLEASE someone fix this?  I wont try 10.7.4 as it seems to make Logic work even worse.
Please...I do not want to have to go back to using pro tools and PC's.

please and thanbk you Eriksimon!   Full details - Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.3, Logic Pro 9.1.7  I use up to three Metric Halo 2882+DSP 2d units with the latest MIO console, drivers and firmware.  Many other Metric Halo and other multiple device users are experiencing this and it is maddening.  Ive been on Logic since 7 and am a analog-digital component level tech / electronics engineer / audio engineer with a decent knowledge of software.
I also use up to two McMix (now Avid artist mix) with latest version of Eucontrol as well as V-control pro with my iPad to control Logics transport etc when not in control room and a Novation sl49 compact USB keyboard with latest Automap version All that worked together quite well on 10.6.8 - logic 9.1.5 on my late 2008 Mac Book Pro but that system was slow...so I was hoping that Apple had Lion "in a cage" when I went out to buy this new Mac Mini Server....  I guess I should have waited.
I am having these aggregate device problems on a totally new from Mac Store Mac Mini Server Quad Core i7, did a clean install of Logic and the Metric Halo software /driver /firmware package.
Nothing else installed on this new Mac Mini but Logic 9.1.7 and MIO package.
    Please....help get this bug fixed??
    Best wishes   dindisc2

  • Aggregate Device problem!

hey guys, im new to this, but i just got Logic Express 7 and i had a problem with my output. i use a fast track for my input. i found out i needed to create an aggregate device to get my output working, so i did, but my options for my device are built- in input and built-in output, and fast track. i saw that everyone selects built- in audio, so what do i do? thanks everyone

You may want to read the "Audio Devices" PDF on this site:
    http://homepage.mac.com/edgarrothermich/Manuals.html
He covers aggregate devices in detail. I believe he discusses creation and usage of the aggregate device.

  • 10.4.7 with aggregate devices

Is anyone using 10.4.7 with an aggregate device? I saw someone on Big Blue Lounge mention a problem with that.
I'm using a Motu 828 mkII with an Alesis AI3 and a Motu 828 mkI as an aggregate device, so this has to work for me.
    Thanks
    Dual 2.7g G5 3gig RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I've been having syncing problems for a while with my firepods, but I don't think its specific to 10.4.7. Audio glitches, artifacts when recording more than 8 channels while both pods are in use. I've done everything Presonus recommended, and I still can't fix the problem. It happens whether i record to internal or external on both my powerbook (internal firewire or high quality buscard) and intel mini. It doesn't happen every time, but considering a large part of my business is going to be live recordings, its just not cutting it.
The good news is that they made a firmware update that allows you to use the Pods as hardware pre-amps, so I can get an Ensemble or RME and upgrade...

  • Aggregate Device Not Recording Both Inputs

    Hi,
I'm trying to run two audio inputs into one (A usb mic and the built in input) on my early 2008 macbook pro.  I'm trying to use the Aggregate device function on the mac. Ill create the device and try to test it out in either quick time video/audio recorder, or audacity and when i look a tthe live monitoring of the input (aggregate device) it looks like its working fine. Ill test each input and make sure that its hearing each and it does. But whenever i record something, again in either audacity or the quick time, it only records one of the inputs. Im losing my mind with this problem and ive tried everything. Ive tried switching the **** source around in the aggregate device window and ive messed with the drift functions, whatever those do. Please help, can't figure this out and i need it fixed asap

    1) How have you concluded that the Built In input isn't there? - No sound (which I do get if I manually select the very same 'Built-In Input' source in Logic).
    2) Are there only 3 pairs of inputs when you use the Aggregate Device? - Not sure what you mean. It's as shown in the screenshots.
    3) Have you tried all available (pairs of) inputs from the Aggregate device (should be 8, or 4 pairs) in Logic? - Not sure what you mean. In Logic I am merely selecting the Input Device source in Preferences - I select Sapphire, Built-In Input all OK; select Aggregate and it doesn't recognise the Built-In input.
    4) And what kind of signal are you feeding the built-in input. - Line out from my eDrums (sep. right and left channel into single, stereo input on my iMac). Again, works fine but only when I manually select 'Built-In Input' source in Logic.
Incidentally, just tried making the Aggregate Device the 'use this device for sound input' master (with and without Drift Correction for In-Built Audio selected) and... no change.
What I mean and what is crucial is to know, is whether you have set your track(s) to the right input(s). On my screenshots you see how it should also look for you on stereo or mono audio tracks. 8 mono or 4 stereo  inputs.
    Stereo
Mono (disregard the names, those are just mine)

I can't by pass it either. Any suggestions?
Does that mean you cannot move it to the TC and plug in by ethernet? What does bypass mean?
I would still move it closer to the TC.. and just trial it there. Range on some AC models for 2.4ghz is worse than old one. For some people.
Another thing to try is fixed wireless channels.. one of the very few options still available in the AC model.. lock the 2.4ghz to 11, 6, 1 .. try it in that order.

How do I send am iMessage to a friend that has an iPad device? She is in my contacts but when I enter her name it won't work. (*note she has no other apple devices.)

Has she registered her e-mail address and/or phone number with iMessage? Are you using the same one that she registered?
She should open Settings > iMessage and make sure that it's set up.

  • Aggregate Devices not working

Whenever i make a new aggregate device, once i close the Audio/Midi Setup, the Aggregate Device is gone. It wont open in Logic and if i reopen Audio/Midi Setup it isn't there....only the default. What should i do?

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to use Ardour (free digital audio software) and you have to do some very specific things with the Aggregate device to make it work, but whenever I make one its gone the next time I open the Audio/Midi window.
Anyone have any answers on this issue?

  • Audio device won't work correctly

I have a plug in called Real Guitar 2. It has always worked in the past but now it has vanished from my list of audio devices. It appears in my dock and It's in my applications folder. I can get it to play but when I record with it, it records all the other tracks!! It's driving me mad! Why are all the tracks bleeding into the track I'm recording on? The other strange thing is that I can't make the internal mic stop recording. I even used headphones and still the internal mic is recording!! (I also turned the monitor off) When I try to shut off the mic, the plug-in doesn't make a sound and cannot be recorded at all. What is going on? Has the company that makes the plug in turned it off? Why doesn't the computer recognize the plug-in as it always has in the past? I'm assuming that is the reason for the problem. How do I fix this? In general, why is the internal mic always ON, even when it's not being used? When I switch to "LINE IN", the plug in won't work. I'm baffled.

It was a dumb mistake! After trying many options I finally realized that I was inadvertently trying to use the plug in as a "real instrument" instead of a "software instrument". It had been several months since I used it and I guess I forgot about those little details.
