Best approach for using Faces with growing children?

Hi all,
I'm I recent Aperture user with young kids (four-year old twins), and I'm wondering how best to use Faces to identify the kids' faces. I started working with about 6 months worth of recent photos in Aperture (3.2.3) before importing my full iPhoto library. Faces did quite a good job of identifying the kids in that sample. I've just imported all of my iPhoto library, which includes photos back to when the kids were first born. Faces is now making suggestions that seem pretty reasonable, but far from perfect. I suspect that if I go through the process of training Faces to do a better job with the "baby faces" its performace would improve on the old photos I just added, but is that a bad idea? I'm afraid that training Faces to recognize the baby version of someone will "broaden" the definition it's using, making recognition less accurate for new photos I add. I could tell Faces that the baby versions are different people, but that might be worse -- then I'd have two very similar face profiles that are competing to "claim" new faces. Does anyone have any experience that might help?

Let me start by stating:
- I don't know
- I don't think you'll get any help from Apple.
That said, here's what I suggest. The Faces parameters are biometric. The human head changes the least of any body part over the course of life. Still, there is bound to be an age prior to which Faces identification works less-well because the data is "smeared". Similarly, after that age, the Faces identification should work with the same level of accuracy.
I would, for the present, ignore that. Identify all Faces you have. If Faces identification is sub-optimal, pick an age that you think corresponds to what I've laid out above, and create a new Face for all pictures of the individual prior to that age. At that point you'll have two "Faces" for each individual: let's say "Robin Infant" and "Robin (post-infant)".
While Aperture makes it easy to combine Faces (drag-drop in Faces View), I don't know an easy way to split named Faces. It's easy enough to group the Images you want (filter for "Face is ... " and for "Date is before ... "). From there, you will have to rename the Faces one-by-one. This goes quickly by pasting the name in the name field.
My guess is that the identification algorithm rejects the data from included faces that are outliers. IOW, I don't think you can train Faces to be sloppy.
Let us know what you find out.

Faces Performance vs Keywording names

I just purchased Aperture 3.1.2 and I've just started importing my 7000+ images. I'm using this to organize and edit my family photos. I've heard about faces and was initially pretty excited about spending the ?? hours adding faces to my images. However, after reading about performance issues I'm now wondering if it's worth my time and whether I should just keyword the names rather than using faces. Is it realistic to assume Apple can fix this performance bottleneck?

I love faces!
I have a library with around 100k images and yes the initial scan took a while, now it is easy to find people. I have my library sorted by companies that I shoot for and am able to click on the top level folder for that company and find people easily. No I have not gone through all the images and tagged them, I do not have names for half the people. However key people in the organisation I have done a number of images of them and then as required have the system find more that might be them, works really well for me. Note I do have a fairly high spec'd machine. An example, one client there are some 20k images, I needed to find as many shots of a director who was retiring, to manually sort through all these images would take ages, the faces feature found all the shots that might be her and cut the time down for me dramatically.

Face recognition over time

How does Faces deal with change of appearance over time? Am I confusing it by asking it to recognize our children as they grew up over 30 years? And when my friend grew a beard?

Very good question!
I have about 12,000 family photos going back from 1850 to the present day. Some ancestors/descendants look like each other, most don't!
But this makes some of the suggestions from Faces quite amusing: is my granddaughter the same as her great great aunt?!
One of my grandsons is a total clone of his father, and pictures of them at the same age confuses Faces no end!
But the more photos you identify, the better Faces works, but you won't confuse it, Faces will often confuse you!

IPad2 screen not working after 3' drop in smart case

Hello
so the iPad got knocked off the table and is dented bottom right corner and now the screen does not work.
Just how hard is this to fix?
Maybe an iFixIt tear down reveals a simple cable to replug in?
or is it bricked from such a simple everyday accident?

I do not know how to link to threads but ling it face down and whacking it fixed it. It did not for ages but face down on bed and hit very hard with flat hand right in the centre. I presume it reseals the case around the lid. Thanks to alanfromnewtownards for the tip:

Thru a workaround i brought up vendor reference number in print preview/print,
Applied formatted search in journal remarks of ap invoice thru query
SELECT $[OPCH.NumAtCard]
,this will populate vendor ref. no in journal remarks
which can be displayed in details in aging report.
Is there any solution other than above to bring vendor reference number in print ?

Issue in converting Struts view to JSF view using struts-faces integration

Hi All,
I am facing a issue in my Sruts to JSF conversion application using struts-faces.jar integration library.
Need expert's help desperately as I am not able to use <s:form> tag in my new jsf page to call a struts action.
I want to call a struts action from my web page designed using JSF,
but it seems impossible without using <s:form> tag from struts-faces integration library.
Please suggest how to resolve this...

I have configured a controller element in struts-config.xml file as has been suggested by different online
documents I studied:

But configuring a controller does not allow my test server to start up properly and due to errors the ActionServlet also becomes unavailable.
If I comment the controller and start the test server it starts fine but then I cannot access the converted jsf page which contains the <s:form action="/xxxxx.do"> tag.
If now I get back to <h:form> tag instead of <s:form> tag with a <h:commandButton action="xxxx.do"/> for form submission in my jsf page, I see the html page generated with all components but now checking the html source generated I see
<form action="/contextName/jspFolder/sameDisplayedPage.jsf"> which is not valid and never gets called successfully.
I think someways I need to use the <s:form> tag with the controller configured properly to use the struts-faces integration library's request processor, to get things working. But HOW???

here form's action attribute is pointing to the same displayed page with the context name prefixed. I
assume it is because jsf could not resolve the "xxxx.do" action to anything so set it to the same displayed page.

Below is the simple struts jsp page which I need to convert to jsf page as I am converting only the View part of application.

Basically you just have to fiddle around with Library settings to get this working OK.
As to how useful this is, well that's up to you - I'd not regard Faces + Struts as a must use combination, rather it's a can mix if you really need to. Look at Faces and Faces navigation first and see if that actually gives you enough before you start to look at mixing.

Powerbook and the dreaded alternating ? and smiling face in a folder.

Hi, My G4 Powerbook has had a dead main battery for ages and I use it plugged in. It recently started losing wifi settings and date and time. I read on a forum that it was the PRAM battery and that it had drained and to take out the main battery and leave on charge for 48hrs. I did that.
As an aside I had upgraded recently to OS 10.5.8 and done a clean install at the time.
The computer then would make the start up sound but not launch the screen. This seemed to resolve itself however it then launched straight into Open Firmware saying bad memory (or something like that) and to type mac-boot so I did and then it just gave me the flashing ? and face folder.
I reset the PRAM and NVRAM in the open firmware but no good.
I found something on Bombich that said about how to setenv so I tried that (probably should not have done before asking here) No joy.
It started opening to the apple logo then the shade came down and the restart you computer by holding down the start button text came up.
I have plugged the laptop in in firewire mode (holding down the T button on start up) The hard disc still seems good.
I have tried holding down C to get it to start on a bootable CD no joy.
The machine currently starts up chimes and then goes to the flashing folder/? logo.
I have run out of ideas anyone got any thoughts.

ADF Faces & BC 10.1.3.4: Barcode Printing & ADF version of WebUtil?

Our existing application is built with Oracle Forms/Reports 9i which also uses Oracle WebUtil 10g because we need to print bar code labels. Our oracle forms appilcation invokes "Host" commands which allows it to print directly to the server's printer ports, this is accomplished by invoking WebUtil functionality which somehow bypasses(probably not the correct term to use) the jvm security sandbox. We need to have a similar barcode printing functionality on our ADF Faces/BC application however I'm not aware of the existence of "ADF WebUtil" which can be configured to allow access to printer ports.

Safari blank page or loading for ages and then timeout!

Hi, this is my first topic so please any reply would be much appreciated. I had a week holiday when my Mac was switched off. Before that I havent noticed any problem with it, everything was working fine and fast. I came back on the 1st, had some updates installed on the 2nd and since then I barely can search the web. The pages loading for ages, after that sometimes get info that Im not connected to the web or timeout or the server doesnt respond to that website. BUT my Skype is still fine I even had a two way video call and was perfectly working. 1st I thought it was Safari so I downloaded Mozzilla but I had the same issue with that. Sometimes Safari works ok for a while and then all of a sudden just try to go to another page from what I used and was ok and that new page just doesnt load. I emptied the cache, I reset Safari and after that my topsites never work again. Well not never but once I used something from there I will not be able to go back and use another one. Since the reset I cant even see all the icons in my TOPSites. This problem is killing me now, dont really now what to do, this is my first Mac and I bought it last october. Still have plenty to learn.
My Safari version is 4.0.5.

Since you have already emptied the cache and reset Safari...
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. *Make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
  Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the addrMss bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If you still have problems with Safari, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

Is There a Way to Improve Faces Accuracy?

I've just started using Faces, and it was able to pull 375 photos of my mother out of a 31,000 image library - pretty good!
Unfortunately, when tagging and searching my 5 kids (age range 2-14), I get >10,000 suggestions, always including all 5 kids. Now, it's not surprising that there is a family resemblance, but there are no "are these 2 twins?" pairs, and the human eye can easily break them down into face 1 thru face 5, even if the observer doesn't know them.
It will be very tedious, of course, to run thru 10,000 images 5 times.
Is the Faces function self-learning? That is, will it get better with feedback, like tagging 100 images of each kid? Or is what I'm seeing as good as it gets?

And why would you even want to produce such a graphic? Small values such as you describe them fall below what is statistically significant, making any data graphic based thereon a direct candidate for Junk Charts. It's simply bad data graphic design and I'm sure Mr. Tufte would agree on this. If you still want to go through with this, I don't really see the problem - 0.1% is 0.36 degrees, which will look only like a tapered stroke on even the biggest poster. Therefore rounding values up or down is really the only feasible option, especialyl since trying to actually print such a graphic would require minimum separations and area sizes to cater for dot gain/ ink bleed. One way or the other, your representation will be biased. That would also be true, if you only showed a section of the whole chart. No matter how you twist and turn it, your graphic would only contain misinformation, so how you draw it matters very little and AI's deficiencies in precision handling are the least of your worries.

Please help iPhoto library problems - faces, facebook etc.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but iPhoto 09 has never worked very well for me. When I first started to use iPhoto 09 I went through my library to tag everyone so they came up in the faces thing. I had to add lots of missing faces because it didn't detect many. Then it merged lots of the faces together under one face name and also lost most of the ones I had tagged. I was really annoyed because this took me ages and I read on the forum that others were having problems so I decided to leave it for a while. I also had a huge problem uploading to facebook. When I made an album to upload it would start but then my internet would go off and then iPhoto just crashed. Whenever I touch any of the facebook albums iPhoto just crashes. After a couple of updates I started to think these features might be working better so I decided to sort out my library. I started to sort out the faces thing where they different people had been merged. I went through and added lots of missing faces. When I went back to check these photos the names I had added disappeared from the photo. I tried about 10 times and each time they disappeared on the same photos. Facebook was still crashing so I deleted all of my facebook albums which took ages because it kept crashing. Now it has duplicated an event and put it under a blank name and a different date. When i try to delete the photos they stay there and when I try to merge the folders that are the same, another event gets put in the folder of the same date, creating different duplicates. I don't understand what i'm doing wrong and I'm so scared of losing photos and all of the things like dates and order etc. Can anyone tell me why i'm having all of these problems? I think i need to rebuild my libary but I don't know how and i'm scared of losing photos or dates, or names or places or faces. Sorry such a long post, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's likely that your Library database has been damaged in all the crashing.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

How do I get google out of my face?

I just installed LittleSnitch to find out what my Mac was sending when I wasn't actually doing anything on line.
It seems to be forever communicating with google.... safebrowsing-cache.google.com or safebrowsing.clients.google.com.
Anyone know why? I stopped using google to search with ages ago; I now use Yahoo. Google earth is not running, in fact my Mac should be having nothing whatsoever to do with google.
Has this humble search engine suddenly taken over the web or something?? How do I get it out of my face??

Thank you for replying. I'm wary of unchecking that option... it seems to be useful (although I haven't had any warnings that I can remember!).
And what do google have to do with warning against fraudulent websites? Is it some sort of service provided by them and built into the browser? Just curious!

Batch confirm Faces-- possible?

I'm finding "Faces" to be potentially very useful, but frustrating to implement because of the apparent necessity to click "Confirm" again and again with all of the instances of "Johnny Jones may also be in the photos below" where, yes, Johnny is the one pictured for the first 357 pictures, but then isn't consistently in many of those that follow.
It would be useful to at the least be able to select an entire row and say "Yes, this is Johnny" or "No, this isn't" ... I have no problem where a row is split doing them one-by-one, but this seems ideal for being able to do some selecting of a group of photos and then mass or batch processing the confirmation or denial.
Am I just missing something in front of my nose, or is this capability truly missing?

AS Kirby stated it is also documented in the manual.
• goto FACES corkboard
• select the FACES tab at bottom left (not photos)
• and click on the existing FACE you want to work on
• for this face, existing faces will come up and "these other faces"MAY" come up below this
1) Now click on 'confirm faces' at bottom of pane
2) use a marquee/selection/select/click or select with command() key those you want to confirm (or reject)
3) all faces go GREEN with confirm label
4) OR *hold the option key down* then then those you select will all go RED for reject.
5) or double click on each one to toggle CONFIRM (green) or REJECT (red) for each photo/face
6) when complete or as you like click on "Done" (bad English BTW) button on bottom corner RHS.
Also list will apear at bottom of this for other faces or UNNAMED faces.
AS Kirby stated if you cntl+click / RMB over one of these faces you have the option to state that the "face" is "*NOT A FACE*"
You just have to persevere with this as Aperture V3 seems to learn quite well about the faces.
FWIW I learned all this over the past few months organising 6900 photos from a wedding. Takes ages but is really worth it.
TIP: I have found if you go through and REJECT (red) the faces as NOT { a FACE of } xxxx then the Aperture will learn faster about a specific set of faces. Do this rather than SKIP or IGNORE the face.
