AGP 4X what would be some top performers from this era?

 Hello. I have a PC that has a 2.4Ghz CPU & 1.5Gb RAM on a WinXp 32-bit system powered by a 400W PSU.
 The AGP (no PCI-E) is a 2X/4X slot and from what I can gather is a first generation 2.0 compliant. I have read that most if not all 8X cards are backwards compliant but a very real possibility of the voltage signaling level can cause instability or a card not working at all or even damage to ones card/system.    I also am not sure of the voltage signaling level of my slot. I have only been able to find one person that informed me that because the slit in between the two connecting blocks of my old AGP card is further back from the back of the card (that is to say the larger block is closer to where the metal bracket is at the back of the desktop) that I have a 3.3V keyed slot. Although if I am using a 4X card I assume it can handle 1.5V's with no problem.
 With that info. mentioned I am wondering what some of the best performers are that would be at 4X. I have tried a few games with this card (Sapphire Radeon 9600XT DDR 128MB, which I know many run hot and this one although still working has burned out it's own fan!) as I have tried a few games such as MS Flight Sim X, Bio (something) and some sniper 3 game and they were very choppy during play (very ) so something with more memory, processing power would be a nice addition to this aged system.  Unless of course there is an 8X card that would not damage this system.
 Thank you very much,
Mumford68

 I stand corrected, found an 8X/4X card -

    What would cause some pages in the same folio to pinch and zoom fluidly, while other pages appear a bit sticky? Could it be a button on the wrong layer that's not allowing the pinch and zoom to work?
    I do have a "go to state" button that enlarges graphic to full page on the page. Could this be cancelling the pinch and zoom functionality? Would a box with text wrap ON affect the ability to pich and zoom? What else may be causing this?

  • How much attached storage can a mac server handle? What would be the best suggestion for this?

    Hello, hopefully I am in the correct location, if not, i apologize. Please bear with me as I am fairly new to MAC server. Here is my dillema. I have a mac graphics group that uses about 6TB of storage currently on a Windows server. We are running into issues such as permissions and searching inability. I was considering moving them to a mac server but will need to add storage to this. What would be recommended for such large disk space? We do currenlty have 2 mac mini servers and all the users are bound to AD as well. Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

    One of the Mac Mini Server boxes I deal with has 24 TB hanging off of the box (configured as RAID-6), plus a two-disk RAID-1 mirror set inside the box.   That's also a pretty small configuration, both in terms of its physical size and in terms of its storage capacity in the grand scheme of things.
    A Mac Pro or Mac Pro Server will do 8 TB inside the box, plus a whole lot more outside the box either direct-attached storage (DAS) or via a Storage Area Network (SAN) configuration, but the performance of a Mac Pro Server is probably overkill for your needs, too.
    As much as you are focusing on the capacity, you'll also want to look at how you'll archive and manage that much storage.   At how you'll manage and conduct backups of your data.
    You'll also be looking at the speed and the design of your network, if you're moving large files around regularly.  Gigabit Ethernet does pretty well for small groups, but you may be looking for a different setup of that's not fast enough.

    eee! So many posts.
    I currently have 2 harddrives hooked up. One has about 37.56 Gigs left on it (probably just over 3/4 full) and the other is nearly full. My files are saved onto it. I am editing in DV format and everything is rendered.
    I have a drive allocated as the scratch disk.
    I don't believe the drive is going to sleep. I would think it would effect my audio as well, since they are both located on the same drive.
    For what it's worth, I ended up ejecting the drive I was using as I needed to do some other work and my system seemed to speed back up. I reopened Final Cut with and it's like my system isn't bogged down anymore. I may try capturing to tape using a different drive and see if maybe it was the drive itself that was bogging down my system.

  • I really would love some feed back on this

    I developing a game and am calling two external .swf files on
    to the stage at the same time. How do I make these two communicate
    probably between one another from the stage without breaking down
    or crashing?
    I have on the stage a reapeated loop so when it receives an
    action, or variable, it will trigger one of the two external .swf
    files. But after the first trigger, it doesn't work again!! It will
    only play what I call taht one time and not again. I have tried
    deleting the variables, setting them back to default, etc.
    Let me know if this isn't enough clarification on my problem
    or question. Again, I am basically asking for a way to commuicate
    between two external .swf files smoothly and without a worry of it
    crashing.
    Please help

    Cool. You didn't ask for it, but I'll give you just a couple
    more pointers.
    createEmptyMovieClip returns a reference to your clip. So you
    can assign it to a variable and then just use that variable for
    future referencing. It can save you a lot of heart ache with typos
    and the like. So your code could become:
    curEnemy=createEmptyMovieClip("enemy_holder", 10);
    curEnemy.loadMovie(['enemies/enemy_0.swf'], 0);
    curEnemy._x = 0;
    curEnemy._y = 0;
    Its subtle, but can be very helpful.
    The next issue is that you have a conditional comparing the
    bytesLoaded and bytesTotal. I'm seeing several potential problems
    here. First, I think that there is no bytesLoaded property for the
    movieclip class. There is a getBytesLoaded() method, but that is
    different.
    Next your code is probably working because both bytesLoaded
    and bytesTotal ARE equal since neither exist. So they will both
    need to be replace with the methods.
    Finally if this project is going to be delivered over the
    web? If so your code will break when it goes online since it will
    take time for the external swf to load. Flash won't pause on the
    loadMovie line until the clip loads and then proceed. It will start
    loading and continue on with the rest of the code in the frame.
    Unless enemy_0.swf is tremendously small, by the time Flash gets to
    the loading test there won't be anything loaded and Flash will just
    skip to the end.
    Of course I'm not sure why you have to wait for enemy to load
    before you start loading char.swf. But we will pretend for right
    now that it does.
    Since you basically need to keep comparing the loaded and
    total over time until the file has finished. Your choice for this
    would be either onEnterFrame or setInterval. The first is easier to
    explain so I will start there.
    this.onEnterFrame=function(){
    if(curEnemy.getBytesLoaded() == curEnemy.getBytesTotal()
    && curEnemy._width>0){
    //the clip is loaded and ready
    //do what you want but be sure to do:
    delete this.onEnterFrame
    That is the basic way to wait until a clip has fully loaded.
    Don't forget to delete the onEnterFrame when completed or it will
    just keep on going and wasting your processor.
    PS: I'm guessing what you found out was that since you are
    loading a swf into enemy_holder that the name of the swf was not
    important and that only the name of the container clip was? So the
    answer was:
    enemy_holder._x +=10;
    Unless of course on the main timeline inside of enemy_0.swf
    there also happened to be a movieclip with the instance name of
    enemy_0, in which case the first example you gave would also do
    something!

    I have this question too!

  • What would prevent createobject ("application.illustrator") from working in a VB Script

    I have an automated process that monitors for Illustrator Docs and saves them as PDF.
    The script is invoked from a service and was working fine, in the middle of processing, we starting getting the error "ActiveX component can't create object"
    The error number is 429.
    If I run the program interactively it works fine.
    I am running the service under a named account that has local admin privlege to the box.
    Windows2003 Standard, SP2
    Illustrator 15 CS5 Design Premium.
    From everything I can tell nothing on the machine has changed.
    No updates, etc.
    I have tried reinstalling Illustrator
    All adobe patches are up to date.
    I have tried creating a different account and get the same result, works fine running interactively, can't create object id script is invoked from a service.
    Interestingly, you do see Illustrator.exe process in memory for a few seconds, the memory stalls ~30K and doesn't move.
    When you run interactively the process is very active and memory grows was past 30K
    Very baffled by this, any thoughts or insight is appreciated.

    Good morninig,
    Did you check the VBA menus tools\references to be sure that you use the lastest Library (Adobe Illustrator CS5 Type Library). If you have oldest dll try to remove them.
    On PC opening Illustrator before using VBA macros is also a good approach.
    Good luck

  • What should I remove or uninstall from this list from the Etrecheck I did?

    I just did an Etrecheck on my MacBookPro (mid 2009) that recently upgraded to Mavericks.
    There are some things on it that I'm not sure whether I should uninstall them, delete, them, and/or Update them. I don't want to take action on something I shouldn't. I'm questioning some of the 3rd party support links, and the "Outdated" JavaAppelet plugin.
    Should I take any actions on any of it?  And what's the best way to uninstall the Microsoft Office that's on my machine?
    Thanks for any help.

  • I would like to prevent content from this ip address from 173.223.52.163 being run in the browser. It is adds usualy and can be included in many sites like yahoo.

    Often slows down the browser also.

    This is one of those painful issues all admins seem to have to go thought as their users move form local to remote.
    The solutions are not pretty but possible.
    One that seems elegant but you would have to do some coding, would be to write a script to disable (turn off) time Machine when connecting via VPN (or better, enable it only when IN HOUSE).
    I think that you should be able to use the firewall to look for the ip range of VPN users and to 'route' the ip of the TM device NOWHERE (drop). This will cause errors for your users ('Delayed Backup ' or 'Time Machine has not backed up in x Days') but should be a solution.
    There are others, but they become more complex than this and most do not hide the errors.
    Hope this gives you some inspiration,
    Peter

  • My mid-2010 27" iMac running Mavericks is fine in safe mode, but with normal boot up the screen goes haywire with some animation emanating from the apple menu area at top left of screen.

    From what I'm reading in these forums, this is likely an issue due to some 3rd party software / kernal conflict. I am going to run a diagnostic and perhaps someone here can help me evaluate the results and determine what software must be removed.
    It's hard to describe what I'm seeing on screen. I've never seen anything like it. I get a number of lines that begin at the top left of my screen, about at the apple icon, and they spread out in a triangular pattern from left to right, top to bottom across my screen, while the entire screen flickers uncontrollably. I realize that iMacs from this era have screen issues, but since I can boot fine in safe mode, this can't be a hardware issue.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
