AGP Video card upgrade

I fear the answer will cost me $400, but here we go:
I have a dual processor Power Mac G5 tower.
There's an AGP 9800 128mb video card in there I want to upgrade.
I have an ATI X800 AGP 256mb card from a PC that's not being used anymore. I can install the card and use a Y connector off the optical drive to get power to the card, but when I boot the system I get no video.
Just as a test, I removed the card and booted the mac with no video card, it acted the same as when the X800 was in: System appears to be booting, no error beeps or anything, I just don't see anything on the screen.
I fear the answer is "Buy a Mac Edition card" but really, the only feasible option is the X800XT MacEd which is a ~$400 card after shipping costs.
Now, is there a bios upgrade that I need to make the card work? Do I need to reset the PRAM to make it be recognized? Does anyone know a card with 256mb RAM that will outperform the 9800 I have now, but not cost me an arm and a leg?
I only run two applications on this computer: Firefox and World of Warcraft. I guess if this card won't work, I'll just ebay it and spend $100 on another gig of ram and wait for the X800 video cards price to drop.
Any help the can be offered, I greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
G5 Power Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Check with Mike over at Accelerate Your Mac, he should know how to flash that card to get it to work with a Mac.
It' probably best to sell it and buy a Mac card, than take a chance.
The X800xt is your best choice and I would choose soon because AMD bought ATI and the future is a little uncertain. Certainly AGP cards will be running out and getting more powerful ones even harder.
You should also run the latest ATI updater before installing the new card.

  • DVI & ADC video card upgrade???

What can I get to replace the stock 64mb AGP card (at least I think it is) in my MDD Dual 1.42 machine. I currently run two Acrylic Cinema Displays, a 20" via DVI and a 17" via ADC...
Is ADC going to limit my options? If so, I can use a second ADC-DVI for the 17" monitor.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanx

Okay, so it sounds like I should "dump" the ADC idea.
    Then an I looking for a card with 2-DVI or 1-DVI and 1-VGA ???
I've followed several of your discussions, but still need a little help with the Video Card upgrade education. Flashed cards kind of scare me, but are they okay to use? I don't know if I could tell the difference anyway. Asking a seller on eBay if it is in most cases won't get you anywhere either.
You've talked about the 7800gs card. Any others I could consider? I've read that some cards don't work in a FW800 MDD machine.

  • Video Card Upgrades

I'm looking to either upgrade or augment the vid display card in my (admittedly) older G5. It was my severance pay from my previous employer, and I still haven't been able to find a job, so my financial resources are a tad limited at the moment.
I've seen Nvidia Geforce 6600 128mb on Ebay and I was wonder if it's a suitable replacement for the 64mb card I've currently got. ATI is the manufacturer of the existing card.

Seems like you must have an early G5 but not sure which exact model, but one with AGP 8x.
There are a number of threads of others asking for video card upgrades. And there is a great hardware resource and database:

    I think there is/was a 6800 Ultra also.

  • Startup error with AGP video cards

I have a WInME machine that gives me errors on windows start-up that ask me
to hit ctrl-enter to clear and states that the client did not remain
resident. These only occur when I have an AGP video card installed. I do
have a PCI video card but would like to use it in a different machine. Has
anyone run across anything like this?
    Thanks,
    Craig Yager

I had tried that to no avail. I had also tried uninstalling the video
drivers earlier using the always reliable add/remove programs and got a
message that they had already been uninstalled. Just for grins, I tried it
again a few minutes ago (since it showed back up in the list of programs)
and it uninstalled for real that time. So I restarted, got no novell client
error msgs, re-installed video drivers, and got no error messages on
re-start! So I guess there was some sort of corruption in the video driver
that was causing this whole mess. Anyway, all's well now..thanks for your
    help Barry!

  • Mac pro 8 core 3.1 randomly freezes after video card upgrade

    Hi,
I just installed an ATI 5770 as a video card upgrade, plugged my new LED cinema display 27 and everything seems to work fine.
Sometimes though, while working with Aperture I noticed the Mac Pro just freezes, although the mouse works, I cannot do anything and I'm forced to press and hold the power button for a reboot.
This happended randomly 5 or 6 times in a couple of weeks and only while working with Aperture.
Any thoughts? Anyone having the same issue?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Guido

    Running Lion or SL?
Tried holding Shift key down and do a safe boot after those freezes.
Use Disk Utility from another boot media to repair your drive.
Do you have enough RAM? is Aperture library on non-boot drive? Does it have 30% or more free? more is better. Same for the boot drive which sholdk be small and 50% free.
Corrupt library. Corrupt preferences (if there were none before, there likely are now after those hard restarts, to data files and to the disk directories).

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • USB Ports and AGP Video Card on same IRQ

I've got a tough one.  I have 6 USB ports.  Call them 1,2,3,4,5,6. Ports 1 and 2 work fine with my new USB 2.0 80GB External Harddrive.  This pair of ports 1 and 2 are direct into motherboard.
However system crashes when I plug USB 2.0 External Drive into ports 3,4,5,6. These are Dports with cables that plug into the MB.  One of these Dports has the four error lights which are all green.  Western Digital has cautioned against sharing this drive with other IRQs.  Says that the video card and the WD harddrive require dedicated IRQs...but I have no control of how W XP assigns them.
Ports #3-6 work fine with mouse,  scanner, and printer etc. However they fail when trying to use WD External Hardrive.
I also checked IRQ settings and IRQ 16 is used for a USB Port and for my MSI AGP video card.  I believe this conflict is the cause of the problem.
So help..how do I fix this dilemma?
I have Windows XP and see no way to change IRQs.
BIOS does not even show IRQ as a choice..only 1-15.  Also BIOS is latests version for my MSI 845G Max L MS-6580 mother Board.  USB drivers are all Intel.  Video Card Is MSI AGP MS-8878 G4Ti/MX 420 w TV out.  Bios and Drivers are current.
How can I run the USB 2.0 External Harddrive in Ports 3-6?

I did load new Intel INF Drivers and AGP drivers yesterday.
No luck USB Ports 3-6 still fail with External Hard Drive.
I'm not clear on how to turn back on AICP or ACIP.  BIOS?
Also not IRQs 16-23 are listed with active devices on the Device Manager
    16 has a USB Controller at 24c2
16 also has AGP video card
    17 has Audio '97
    17 also has Fast Eternet.
18 has USB Controller at 24c7
19 has USB Controller at 24c4
23 has PCI to USB Interface.
Port 3-6 do work fine with mouse, dig cam, Scanner, printer.  These ports only fail with External Harddrive plugged in.  Ports 1and2 work fine with external HD??
So question is how do I check on the IRQ ports using AIPC or APIC...or whatever the name is...thanks folks.

  • AGP video card installation problem. Help!!!

How in the WORLD am I going to get my AGP video card installed???  I can't get it close to the AGP slot before everything is in a bind.  The power cable bundle sticks out too far, and it looks like the optical drive hangs out over the AGP slot.  What did you folks do???  Please help soon.  If I can't get my AIW9700Pro installed, I might as well send it back to where I bought it.
    Glendor...

To get mine in I cut the ties further down the board so that I could move stuff around easier.
I was able to put 1/2 of the cables coming out of the psu over the card, the other 1/2 pressed flat against the PSU. That way it JUST fit.
Very tight squeese but Fits ok when secured.
Once the card is in the slot there is more room above the card to push the cables so it may work if you remove the PSU, fit the card then refit the PSU with the cables just above the AGP card.

  • Will this card work? - Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card

I posted a question about getting the maximum resolution from an Apple 30 inch Cinema Display and another card, which didn't work.
The replies were fast here in the forum and quite correct.
My next question is regarding the Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card.
I have an AGP card with an ATi Radeon 9600 Pro card that can't power the 30 inch because it's only 64MB and no DVI output.
I'm wondering whether this card will give me the maximum resolution?
    Thanks again.

    Hi Japamac-
    Thanks for the quick reply.
My System Profiler indicates a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, but it doesn't have the Dual Link since this is an older G5 with only 64MB of VRAM.
The GeForce 6800 is a refurb, but is Mac compatible.
I'm hoping that it will work, but since it won't be returnable, I don't want to spend the money needlessly.
I did order another card that the Apple support suggested should be compatible, but turned out that they sent me the PC version.
I've spoken to Apple as well and get conflicting info.
It boils down to the fact that this is a G5 with a late 2004 date.
It is fast enough for me and my only hang up is that I'm only getting 12980X800 resolution.
I'm not using it for gaming or graphics processing.
    HTH.

  • K8T Neo-V, problems w/ savage agp video card (Stealth III S540)

    Hi all
I have a K8T Neo-V mobo, 512 MB Kingston memory and a Stealth III S540 agp video card. The problem is that when I play any kind of video in my linux box it freezes completely the system, same thing with Windows Xp SP2. When i start Soldier of Fortune it hangs up the system. The agp card is quiet old, i know, could be this a problem with some BIOS setup like 'aperture size' and speed, and so on? Don't know about what this options means  ???,  maybe that's the source of the problem, who can give me some piece of advice about this, please. I'm considering getting a newer and faster agp card, but not in the near future.
    Thank you

I am suprised a card that old even works as I thought those were for the original AGP setup that had different voltages.
I would really recommend grabing a newer card up and if you are just looking for a simple display maybe you can still find an old Ti4200 or such.

  • K330 Video card upgrade question.

New to forum and was just about to pull the trigger on a new K330-77471CU (from BB). However, I read a customers comment saying that this unit only had an AGP port, no PCI express slots for upgrading the video card, can this be true??? Does'nt seem possible today.  The desktop overall will fit my needs, but I want to make sure that if I elected to upgrade the video card someday, I could with the latest generation cards.

thanks for the reply Duck3. The above desktop is a new release for BB stores and features i3-2100 / 8mgs memory / 1 T HD. Not a high end unit by any means but one that you would think would allow the user to upgrade the integrated vid. card to a dedicated ........ hmmmm , I'm hoping perhaps a rep from Lenovo will jump in and clear this up so I can make a decision on this particular desktop.  I highly doubt our local BB sales rep is going to know the answer to this. These things just hit the shelves here. And yes, the customer was giving his review of the above mentioned model he just purchased.

  • Options for video card upgrade to quad-core G5?

What are my options? I bought the powermac quad-core G5 with the base video card (geoforce 6600); now I want to upgrade, but it seems that one cannot buy the other video cards (e.g. geoforce 7800 or quadro fx 4500) on their own, but only as a package with a new powermac. Do I have any options? The ATI X800 looks great but it is an AGP card and the pmac is PCI

So far I didn't get a card from Apple to upgrade.:-(
But on the Aperturetricks website, Scott says, that I got an upgrade.
    Don't know how.

  • Will X1650XT 512MB AGP Video Card work with 865PE MS-6728?

    Hi,
My video card is fried, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a HIS X1650XT AGP 512MB video card. I read somewhere that some motherboards have issues with 512MB video cards. Is this true? I can't find anymore info on whether this motherboard will support this video card.
    http://www.hisdigital.com/html/product_ov.php?id=276&view=yes
    Anyone have any input?
    Thanks!

No need to get hostile, I didn't say you were an idiot.  Though continuing to make uninformed statements might get you there....
    Quote
The video cards need at least 30A to make the card run properly.  That's pretty damn easy to understand how the last PSU was the problem.
Actually, it doesn't.  The 30A figure cited by the manufacturer is a worse case scenario for +12V needs of the entire system + the graphics card.  The X1650XT doesn't even need an auxillary PCI Express power connector and can be powered entirely through the PCI Express slot, which supports a maximum of 75W.
If you need further proof of this, for CrossFire setups the manufacturer cites a figure of 38A on the +12V rail.  If one card requires 30A, how could two cards require only 8A (96W) more than one?  The same requirements are stated for X1950XT (30A single and 38A Crossfire), so its a highly generic target that attempts to account for an entire range of power supply rating methods and total system power demands.
Here are total power consumption measurements of whole systems used in various X1650XT tests:
    Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 @ 2.93 GHz
    Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C4
    Western Digital 150GB 10K Raptor
    Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value
    AMD ATI Radeon X1650 XT
Total system power under 3D load = 206 Watts MAX
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
    2GB Crucial PC-4000
    Western Digital 74GB 10K Raptor
    AMD ATI Radeon X1650 XT
Total system power under 3D load = 192 Watts MAX (only 66W higher for 2 x X1650XT in CrossFire)
    Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 (2.93GHz/4MB)
    Seagate 7200.7 160GB SATA
    Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 (1GB x 2)
    AMD ATI Radeon X1650 XT
Total system power under 3D load = 182 Watts MAX
Those are figures for TOTAL system power needs, not the graphics card itself.  Here are figures just for the X1650XT from X-bit Labs:
    55.2 Watts @ full load
That's not more than 5A MAX from the +12V rail.  Even assuming a 20% VRM loss, gets us to around 6A MAX.
As anyone can plainly see, the manufacturer's stated requirement of 30A is a hugely overinflated number to help people avoid purchasing a power supply like this because they are looking only at hugely inflated total power.
Given that your X1650XT could not possibly require more than 6A of 12V+ power, and high-end systems using overclocked Dual Core Extreme don't even consume more than around 250W TOTAL (all components combined, factoring VRM loss), the evidence is now overwhelming and beyond dispute that your previous power supply was more than adequate and that inadequate power was never the cause of your problem.  It could have been defective, but that isn't the same as having inadequate power.

  • G4 QuickSilver Video Card Upgrade Advice

Hi all...I have a G4 QuickSilver 2001 867mHz Mac with its factory nVidia GeForce2 MX card in the stages of dying. It crashes the system when I attempt to boot in regular mode and will only start up in safe mode. I am 99.99% sure it is the video card going. It will occasionally boot in regular mode but the graphics become distorted when any graphic intensive action is taken (e.g., menu pulldown, scrolling, etc.) and will eventually hang or a kernal panic occurs. I have ruled out any software issue.
I would like upgrade the card and maybe venture into the world of Motion at some point after I upgrade the processor. I do video editing on FinalCut and DVD StudioPro also. But as you know, under safe mode, all these programs are useless as well as printing.
My question is: What card would you recommend? I am leaning toward a ATI RADEON 9600 PRO PC & MAC 256MB AGP CARD or better. To be honest, I am totally bewildered by the various cards, etc. out there and don't have a clue as to what is recommended and what my machine can accomodate.

worked fine, but I had to try various combinations
    of

  • G4 Sawtooth Processor and Video Card upgrades

    Hi there,
I'm heading for a major upgrade on my G4 Sawtooth 500Hz, starting with processor and Video card, not to mention maxing out the RAM slots.
My main applications are Final Cut, After Effects and Photoshop.
I wish I had more money for a dual processor (or even a G5 – sigh!) so I'm looking at the Sonnet Encore/ST G4/1.4GHz Processor versus the PowerLogix G4/1.4GHz 7455A PowerForce55. I've done the benchmark tests at OWC's site and I'm inclined to Sonnet. Anyone have an opinion between these 2, or even if there's another one I should be also considering?
Should I make the effort and go for a dual processor? because of the clear benefits on rendering time (specially for After Effects)?
    Video Cards:
These I think I need more help. Going thru these threads I learned that I should consider the power supply (overheating problems) and that "AGP G4's have either a 208w or a 237w Power supply (PSU)" - I have no idea what I got.
On another thread I read: "as far as I'm aware, there are only two video cards currently available retail that support Tiger's core image/video, the Radeon 9600 and 9800. Unfortunately the 9600 requires a x4 AGP slot, so that just leaves the 9800. It's a powerful card but consequently is fairly expensive and can be noisy due to it's fan."
What is a x4 AGP slot? Do Sawtooths have this?
I'll be upgrading to Tiger soon. Does this mean I can't go for the ATI Radeon 9200?
I'd prefer AGP than PCI cards. What are my real options considering power consumption, OS and performance?
Important: I’d like the video card to run 2 monitors, LCD and/or CRT.
Further upgrades would be SATA controller card and one or two internal SATA drives replacing the ones I got.
    Last but not least:
Instead of all this fuss, should I 'just' get the MacMini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo????? and later on get a G5 (or whatever it will be called...)?

I think I may have written what you've quoted. You probably already know, but you don't actually need a Core Image compatible card to use Tiger. As far as I'm aware, few applications currently make use of Core Image and fewer still actually require it (Apple's Aperture and Motion being possible exceptions).
As PB PM mentions, you have a x2 AGP slot and unfortunately there's little middle ground in terms of graphics cards available. The main options are the Radeon 9800 at one end (powerful but relatively expensive, power hungry, hot running and noisy) or perhaps the Radeon 9000 at the other. It's no longer available retail but they appear on eBay occasionally. It's an AGP card, was available in 64MB and 128MB versions and can support two monitors. One slight downside is that it has an ADC connector (alongside the VGA connector), which the Sawtooth logic board doesn't support, but I believe you can still connect an ADC to DVI adapter cable to connect a DVI monitor. It doesn't support Core Image either.
