AGP vs PCI for 2nd display

I am considering upgrading my set-up to include a 2nd 17" LCD display.
Can anyone tell me how bad of a performance hit I'll get by getting my 2nd ADC port through a PCI card? Will I actually see a lag between the PCI-fed and the AGP-fed displays?
Is there even a PCI card with direct ADC out for the G4? Or is the DVI-to-ADC adapter the only way to get ADC? (In which case, it's probably better to just upgrade the AGP card.)

Thanks. That clears things up quite a bit.
For anybody else considering adding a 2nd ADC display to a Quicksilver with GeForce2 setup, here's some of the info I've collected on various configurations including rough eBay prices:
a) Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 128MB AGP + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about ~$200.
b) Radeon 9000 64MB AGP + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about $160.
c) Radeon 9200 128MB PCI + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about $180. But you can't sell your GeForce2 AGP card.
d) OEM Radeon 9600 AGP (from G5s) + 1 DVI-ADC adapter runs about $120 for 64MB and $200 for 128MB. But requires modifications (with tape) to work and (with solder) to run power to the ADC. Some sellers are offering modified cards for an additional $50 or 60 but without the power modification.
e) Radeon 9600 Pro Mac Edition 256MB + 2 DVI-ADC adapters runs about $360.
Options a, b and c will not support Core Image, while d and e will.

  • Need 1366x768 Resolution for 2nd display (50" Plasma)

I have a Mac Pro with the X1900XT video card. Looking at the back of the Mac I have a Dell 2405FPW hooked to the right-side DVI port and my VIZIO 50" Plasma hooked to the left-side DVI port with a DVI to HDMI cable.
I do get a great picture and everything seems to be fine except there is no resolution option for 1366x768. Now this is not anyting new, most video cards are not capable of this resolution because the 1366 is not divisible by 8bits but most cards (including the Xbox 360 via RGB) allows 1360x768 which looks great and is the best option. Right now I have it set to 1280x720 which is displayed with about a 2" border around the screen.
So if anyone has any ideas on how to get the Mac Pro to output 1366x768 or 1360x768 as a second display on the X1900 that would be great.

I will check out both of those, actually this is just what I was looking for, something like powerstrip but for macs. I will update the post after testing both of them.
    Thanks for the reply.

Looking to obtain 23" Cinema Display (M8537M) for 2nd display. Tech specs list only G4 compatability. Will this unit work w/my G5 dual? Both monitor and G5 have ADC connections (as well as the new graphics card I'm about to install - x800xt). Trying to keep my investment alive. Thanx

  • Using an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?

    Hi all,
is it possible to use an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?
I guess it depends (if at all possible) on the models, right?
Would it be possible with two of the currently available iMac 27" models?
Is it just connecting the two video jacks with a cable? That would mean that the jack is input AND output connector at the same time: the video signal would be output from iMac 1 and serve as input for iMac 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

Awesome, David! Thank you! That helped a lot!
Additional question: because running applications on the target-display-mode-iMac keep running: will I be able to connect from the source iMac to the target-mode-iMac via OS X's Share Screen functionality? So that I can still USE the 2nd (target-display-mode) iMac for running applications and accessing them? Or is the iMac in target display mode really just a dumb display? Will ssh'ing to it work?
A little background: programs like Cubase and Logic work really great with two screens. Additionally, some audio plugins really need a lot of CPU power and some of those can actually distribute the number crunching via the LAN to other computers. So my thought is: run Cubase on iMac #1, use iMac #2 as a 2nd screen (will work, thanks to David's reply) AND use iMac #2's CPU, too, to help some Cubase plugins' number crunching. Would that work?
    Thanks a lot,
    Stefan.

    Problems facing....
My cinema HD is set to primary display and Cinema as 2nd display. Everything was working fine but suddenly my 2nd display stopped working. It remains black as if its in sleep mood. The small power led light on the monitor is On(not blinking). In Graphics/Displays shows both monitors are connected. I can drag any window to the 2nd display as if its working but its still black. In display preferences it shows both monitor on arrangement section. I can even change the resolution size of both monitors.
My cinema display monitor has no problem. I have checked it already. I have swapped the DVI ports at the back of my cpu but it seems only the 2nd port is giving this problem. As if no matter what my 2nd port of graphics card is on sleep mood. I have taken it to our local apple center and both ports were working fine there, the only difference is they checked it using none apple lcd monitor. But when I brought it back to office, it had the same problem again. The strange thing is....one day while I was working the 2nd display suddenly appeared but when I restarted my mac, it went back to the same problem. Till now my 2nd display not showing anymore. I have reinstalled to new OSx but the problem remains. So can anyone pls tell me how I can solve this problem.
    thanks
    <Edited by Host>

only the 2nd port is giving this problem
You have an older card, and the second port is flaky. The problem follows the port.
I am sorry to be so blunt, but the problem is YOU.
No one wants to be the one to club you on the head and point out that your card is dying, and you are going to have to get a new(er) one. There is no "quick fix" for dying Hardware, and no fix at all for you when you will not connect the dots and realize your card is on its last legs.
If running 10.6.4 or later, you can install the 5770 and it will work, but not at quite the advertised speeds if your slot will only go up to 8x.

  • 20 inch 2.4Ghz iMac with 2nd Display

Is there anyone out there using a 20 or 24 inch 2.4Ghz iMac with a 2nd Display with Aperture?
I'm interested to know if Aperture 2 will perform adequately, or whether the demanding graphics requirements of Aperture will be over-extending the iMac graphics card with a second display.
My dilemma is that my G5 with Radeon 9600 graphics doesn't really cut the mustard, and the display of my 20 inch iMac isn't suitable for critical image editing applications due to the graduation in screen brightness from top to bottom; so until I can justify the move to a Mac Pro, my options are either getting the (increasingly hard to get) x800 XT card for the G5, or (and maybe the better option?) a second display for the iMac.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Forrest Smyth

Thanks Mark - yes I have an iMac as well as a G5 with AGP graphics and the 9600 card, so it's a toss up between buying a second display for the iMac, or a x800 XT card for the G5. My iMac also has 4Gb of ram compared to the G5's 3Gb.
My thinking is that by going the iMac with a second display route, I will have the advantage of two displays for not a lot more than the cost of an x800 XT card (if I can find one), in a system that is [possibly] snappier running Aperture. The fly in the ointment could be the extra overhead of a second display on the iMac - so I'm hoping someone who is running Aperture with dual displays on an iMac might read this and provide some feedback.

  • Getting a video card that supports extended desktop mode: AGP? PCI?

Hi guys and gals (and everything in between),
One of the reasons I got a Power Mac not so long ago was the convenience of using two or more displays at once, but then I discovered that the stock ATI Rage 128 in my Gigabit 450 (dual) does not support two displays. (I discovered it the hard way, when I connected a recently acquired Studio display to it, and my trusty CRT stopped getting a signal.)
I won't be using the computer for games, design or anything graphics intensive, mostly word processing (I'm a translator/editor/writer by trade), so I do not need the high end of the video card spectrum --just an AGP card that could allow me to work on extended desktop mode, preferably with an ADC connector. Would a Radeon 7500 suffice?
Or maybe a PCI card? I have read a lot in this forums against getting a PCI card, because of the 33 Mhz bottleneck, but wouldn't it work well enough for checking email and working on 2 or 3 documents at once?
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated!
    Peace.

I also did a little research in the forums and elsewhere (by the way, your posts have been really helpful to me, very knowledgeable and well-documented), and ended up buying a Radeon 7000 PCI for hooking up my VGA monitor, as a cheap solution to my problem.

  • P7n, 2-card sli, 3rd card for 2nd monitor

Anyone got 2-card SLI and a 3rd vid card for a 2nd monitor working?
System: p7n, 4GB OCZ Vista gold PC-6400 RAM, Pentium D930 for testing, 2 MSI NX8800GTs, Vista x64 installed, SB Xfi that's included with the MB, one 500gb WD SATA hard drive and an IDE DVD.  I plan to move my RAID card over from my eVGA system in my sig if I can get this working...but I need more than 1 monitor.
    Nothing overclocked!!
I can't get SLI to work with a 3rd video card.  I've tried an eVGA 8400GS...no SLI option in the nVidia ctrl panel, eVGA 8500, no boot, the fans spin for a fraction of a second, and the leds flash and that's it, and an ATi 1800xtx...errors in Vista about incompatible hardware.
With the 8400GS, there's no longer any option for SLI in the nVidia control panel, which there was with only the 2 8800GTs on the previous boot.
I've got a 650W PS with dual PCI-E leads, and the system is currently pulling less than 300W, so this shouldn't be an issue.
I've built hundreds of systems, but this is my first SLI system.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, the MB will occasionlly fail to boot with just the 2 8800gts, I just get the fan spin/led flash.  Bad motherboard?  The only way to get it to boot again is to pull one of the8800gts and restart, sometimes the bios needs to be reset.
    psu specs:
    650w

    +5      54a
    +12v1 20a
    +12v2 20a

Got the solution I was looking for via the forums at nvidia.com from jaafaman
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=60345&st=0&p=330530&
The third card works best as an nVidia so it can use the same driver. Right now, I'm using two 8800GTS640s in SLI and a 6200OC as the third, with a 20" WS for the SLI and two 17" WS attached to the third card.
And to date, Vista is the only OS where this is possible!
Start by mounting the cards, installing the one single ForceWare driver and mounting your monitors as above. Make sure your monitors are working in non-SLI mode before setting SLI up.
Open the Device Manager, and under Display Adapters you will see all three cards listed. Right-Click on the third card's entry and choose the "Disable" option. Close the Device Manager and reboot the system.
Once Vista fires back up with the third card disabled, the option to run SLI will show up in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Enable SLI as you normally would, and regardless of whether or not you have to reboot to enter SLI, once SLI is enabled you must reboot at least one time so that Vista starts up with SLI active.
Once SLI is enabled and Vista has been rebooted, you can open the Device Manager again and re-enable the third card.
At that point, you can do whatever you need with the other monitor(s) as you normally would. You can't extend the SLI rendering to the extra screens, but you can still extend the Vista Desktop, etc. and run apps or child windows as you normally would.
To get out of SLI, reverse the process. The key is in having the third card DISABLED while enabling or disabling SLI with a reboot.
A poster named Fredrik finalized this process as an illustrated guide in the SLI Zone and it was "stickied" there for permanent display. Oddly enough, the Guide is labelled Guide: Run Multiple Monitors with SLI, Vista, 3 Nvidia Cards, 2 cards in SLI and one for up to 2 other monitors. As one of the original participants, the title of your own thread is what caught my eye. Thought maybe someone else had discovered this as well...

  • I can't seem to turn off my 2nd display (with no adapter plugged in)

Been looking on the internets for ages about this and not got anywhere, so did a completely fresh install last night.
The problem is that the DVI (2nd display connection) thinks that I have a VGA display connected (i.e. the 2nd display) when I plug in the DVI-VGA adapter to use with a TV that works fine. The 2nd display resets to align itself to the TV connected.
When I disconnect the adapter the Mac resets it display. Back to having this phantom display connected.
I've plugged in the DVI-VGA adapter as well and then carefully removed that and sameroblem.
Having done a fresh install that would mean it's not a software issue, so it has to be a hardware one? Something with the actual connection? Does anyone know of any potential problems as to why this would happen?
I've tried some compressed air. (I've lost the straw so it was straight from the can, spray paint style)
    Please help.
    Thanks.

  • 2nd Display & iMac w/ 2 Different Sets of Content from Same iMac

Can I do this?  (How can I do this?) I'd like to connect a second display to my iMac and use the iMac to generate content (like live feeds or video content from CNN.com) to play on the second display while I "work" on the iMac and its screen. Thus, each display have its own content--but the content is generated by the one iMac.  Could I use a HD tv as the second display?
    Thanks for your guidance.
    Bill

Depends on the iMac, but some of them do support this.
Look yours up at  http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html  and look for the section about displays and 2nd display support under your model.
With the second display connected to the appropriate port, you use your Displays System Preferences to configure them. If you choose "mirror" both displays show the same thing. If you choose to not mirror, you can have an "extended desktop where you can place different windows on different monitors and do exactly what you want to do. AN HD TV might be usable but you have to look up what your iMac can handle in terms of pixels and resolution and compare that to your HD TV specs. You can certainly buy inexpensive monitors to use if your HD TV is compatible.

  • 2nd display disappears on switching focus to another application

    Hi,
I'm running LR5 on Windows. I've got the grid view on my primary display and a second display showing the loupe view.
If the focus moves to another application (i.e. a small notepad window on the primary display) then I can still see LR with its grid view in the background behind notepad on the primary display however the loupe view on the second display disappears and I can see the desktop.
Is it possible to configure LR not to automatically hide the 2nd display when the input foucs moves to a different wiindow? I'd like to be able to continue displaying the image on the 2nd display while I'm doing something else on the primary display.
I've not been able to check but I've a feeling this is new behaviour in 5, I don't think 3 or 4 did this.
Many thanks in advance for your time/help! :-)

No, sorry.  I've just checked LR3 for you, and the behaviour's the same.

  • 2nd display not as bright as first display

I have 2 facory video cards installed. They're the same (ATI 5770) each have mini ports and aldo DVI.
When I boot up each day at work, the second display won't go to full brightness. USBs are both plugged in and I do get the brightness control levers on the preferences for both displays. However, the 2nd display (at 100%) is just not as bright as the primary display. Both are the same 27" displays; each on their own dedicated video cards. I would say it is about 20% less bright.
Sometimes if I re-boot or reset SMC and monkey with it, I can get it to boot at 100% brightness but lately it's choosing on it's own to be dimmer. Switching USB ports didn't seem to have any effect. I am assuming it's a hardware issue bc I have reset PRAM, SMC, Disk Repair, trashing preferences, and so I'm a little bummed this expensive 27" LED display can't guage it's full brightness.
Thanks kindly for any input / solutions.

To post a hopefully helpful follow-up.. over past couple of days I got it to hold up its full brightness. To restore the full brightness of the 2nd display I disconnected / reconnected the display cable a few times until I noticed it was suddenly matching the full brightness of the 1st display. Is it the 2nd video card? The display? The G5 hardware/software? Can't say.
But after re-booting overnight, it retained the full brightness. Not sure why this happened/s, could be an isolated issue with something slightly defective?? Regardless, maybe this will help someone where both displays are not at full 100% brightness. Replug them a couple times to see if that tricks it back into action.
Remember, my toggles in the display prefs said both were at 100% yet the 2nd display was clearly 20% darker before I got them back to true 100%.
In the end, these LED displays are truely magnificent (aside from my isolated issue).

  • 2nd Display Question?

Hi! I've been using my ibook G4 12" for a few months now, absolutely loving it.
And I want to hook up a bigger 2nd display on my ibook, so I can watch movies more comfortable, but the manual says it won't support external display more than 1024x768, is that true?
    Any advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • 2nd Display of macbook

I've read a few things about the subject but never had a clear anwser. I've read that the maximum resolution for the 2nd display of the macbook is 1920X1200. Doesn't help me if I plan to buy a 19'' inches with a maximum of 1440 X 900. I want to use the 19'' to expend my desktop. Will it work properly (without distortion)
If you have any infos about that thank you for your answer

1440x900 is less than the MacBook's maximum resolution of 1920x1200. That means it'll work just fine as a second display at its full resolution. You just can't run a display that's larger than 1920x1200, such as Apple's 30" Cinema Display. But the 23", for example, will work fine, as will anything smaller.
