Ahh!! Ghost in my machine.

Mysteriously my distorted sound issue disappeared on its own along with my center and rear channels. Whats up with that ?

check your audio settings
start, control pannel, sounds and audio devices
under speaker settings click advance and select your speaker type
under the audio tab make sure your sound card is selected in default device
click advanced and select the speaker type
ok everything

  • Powerbook trashed my music folder think i have a ghost in my machine!

this is the second time my aging ti867 has done this to me, im using this machine purely as a music server and have spent a lot of time bringing all my music over from all my other machines. So here's what happens, I bring some of my music over, import into itunes and then delete the folder on my desktop, when I empty trash my computer has put my entire music folder in trash and I accidently delete my entire music collection, it has done this twice to me so far. Im pretty sure now that I haven't accidently binned my music folder and the machine is responsible but how could this be?. I'm thinking that I'll re install tiger and try process again.
    thanks for looking

Before you import, go into preferences and make sure that "Copy songs to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library" is checked. If you don't have that, it adds the songs from where they are, which is the desktop in your case.

  • Ghost in the machine (Flash Player 9)

I have a strange problem on my Windows 7 machine that I can't seem to resolve. There is a version of Flash Player 9 r124 that exists on my computer that I cannot remove. While this might not normally be a problem, the real issue is that any time I open a .swf, it defaults to this version of Flash, even though I have Flash Player 10 installed. If I try to tell windows to open it using Flash Player 10, but it acts as i it is the same application and makes no difference. If I want to run the .swf in 10, I have to open 10 manually and open the .swf from there. I have no way of tracing where the Flash Player 9 client actually is, (I've looked in windows/System32/macromed as well as windows/WOW64/macromed and it is not there).
I have tried using the flash uninstaller from adobe, which does fine for removing Flash Player 10 but for some reason does nothing to remove this rogue copy of 9. Short of going through every entry of "Flash" in the registry or reformatting, I was hoping someone would have something to suggest.
tldr: I can't uninstall Flash Player 9, I have tried almost everything I can think of/google search, please help.
    Thanks.

Wow, that little application did it. I imagine that will come in handy in the future. I don't know why I didn't think of using a better process tracker.
Turns out, Flex Builder 3 had a local version of FP9 in its program files. Hopefully I can replace them with FP10 or FP9 in the future, in case I need to use Flex again, but as for now I removed them and everything started working like magic.
If anyone is curious, the directory I found FP9 in was:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Flex Builder 3\Player\win\FlashPlayer.exe
Thanks for the help! You just saved me and several of my coworkers a heap of annoyance.

  • 10.4.3 Upgrade - FANS FIXED: the 'ghost in the machine' syndrome is solved!

I'm posting this topic here just to help anyone else experiencing the same problem.
After upgrading to 10.4.3 the fans on my G5 would turn themselves on every 10 seconds or so for a little while, and all the while it seemed like the hard drive was working, even when no apps were opened up. The machine was noticeably slower because of this, and this went on for week. After reading the forums I had reset the SMU, reset PRAM and nvram, changed the performance to highest in preferences-energy saver-options yet the problem was persistent.
Accidentally I realised that spotlight was indexing the machine and taking forever to even calculate the time needed to do that, ie for weeks it was doing this and not indicating how long the indexing should take to complete.
This article mentions the indexing and slowing of the mac after upgrading the os: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302223
but what helped my issue was this article, how to re-index: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301562
now after dragging the 3 volumes of my mac onto the privacy window of spotlight, in preferences, followed by removing them, the mac restarted the re-indexing process and after only about 15 mintues the whole thing settled down. Now my G5 is quiet as a whisper again. And fast too!
Other cases may be due to different reasons, but neither I nor the apple tech support thought of the problem having anything to do with spotlight-indexing.

    Hi, roobp57 —
Thanks for posting about your conundrum and its solution.
Here's hoping it helps other folks with similar puzzles!

  • My Mac Mini Turns on by itself or is it  The Ghost In The Machine?

Lately I have been noticing that my Mac Mini is turning itself on after being off for several hours. At first I thought it might be another member of my household, but when I questioned they all about they all state they did not turn it on. Now unless I have ghost in my house that are big Mac fans I can't figure out why or how it can be turning itself on. As far as I know there have been no power outages in my area that might have caused it to think it needs to be turned on when the power came back in, and besides why would it need to restart after a power outage if it was already off when the power went out and came back on.

Check your Energy Saver settings in System Preferences. Under Schedule there may be a startup time someone set, which is causing it to start up at the odd time of the day.

  • After installing Mountain Lion, there's a ghost in the machine.

Pages open and close by themselves, the cursor jumps around the open page.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check for unknown or forgotten input devices. Disconnect any USB input devices that you aren't using.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    8. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    9. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    10. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • A ghost in the machine

hello all. sorry that my first words here have me begging for help, but i've been kinda following threads for couple weeks now while trying to figure out how to play along and maybe be able to muster up tidbit to offer help before needing help but it's just not working out that way. i'm certainly not feeling like i'm the one that anyone would/should take advice from these days given my lil mac-de'- lima. although i've owned a mac for 18-19yrs w/o any problems flying too far over my lil noggin, let me just say that knocking on would a wisest move, as it turns out...got my new intel imac butt spankn outta the box early this yr and it has me freaken scratching my head to a gnarly raw finish trying to fig out what's going on with it. please please someone, todays' hero - any help would be greatly appreciated!
so i got my fancy smancy imac as a late x-mas gift this past feb and it's just been problem after problem, so it must be the jinx or stupid in me... i was using it to compose music, but now i just kinda sit and look at the activity monitor and console while taking bets and wondering how much memory will it gobble before needing it's tenth  "CLEAN" Os install / reinstall?...and the answer is, it will go until it gobbles up whatever is the rest of the memory.  i'm now on my the 11th or 12th OS install and this includes the two installs that the apple store geniuses did while attempting to perform a "clean" install. i use quotations because i'm i'm positive i'm seeing files and odd screwed up patterns and behaviors reappear over and over but immediately after an install. for instance, when i try to do an update and i mean, directly after doing the reinstall i go straight to the apple website and instantly dealing with redirects. but it's not just that, i have checked permissions upon completing a reinstall and they've wound up being screwed up from the get go. but this isn't a messy mess, it's a neat one because whomever schemed it up was clever enough to rig the utility app so that it was being misled to a bad source to retrieve bad permissions. and i know that i'm really not very computer smart or anything and i'm surely not stating things w correct techno speak so please bare w/ me and my brilliant displays of ignorance. really whatever is or isn't going on w/ my computer, it has been driving me bat crazy. i'm convinced that somehow enough of the right files are dodging the reformatting process and they are are somehow stored locally. maybe in the root, is that possible. i don't know prolly a stupid question i know... some files are maybe coming from a wired source; others i believe are coming direct from the web, some are arriving by way of rigged airport utility; some have appeared dressed up as fonts that ended up consuming .5G of memory; i'm mostly composing music and so some have shown up tucked or written to arrive as the innards of a garageband loop. and not just one lil ol loop... we're talking over 7gigs of information stuffed inside a loop. i know i'm not expressing this in a way that has me sounding like a sane person but quite frankly, there for awhile i thought that i was loosing my mind. at first i was avoiding a reinstall of the musical loops that come w/ gb because i don't use them, but now i do this for security reasons. this monster on my computer, and it is a monster to me, a call it 'the hateful memory sucking dirty file monster" because as far as i can tell, that's basically all it winds up doing. although i should mention that there were a few instances of hankypanky where i was clear that someone else was logged onto my computer but from a remote location. i am the only one that is "supposed" to have access to my computer but this is not the case. is it at all possible to rig a computer so that it doesn't have access to the outside world. i've lost way too much time in lost files and now, i'm afraid to even work on it. i almost always unplug the internet if i'm not on it. i have plenty of computers if i should ever need to be on the web. it's also on my iPhone, it's on both of my ipads. whatever this is, it has locked me completely out of two laptops running windows and the third one, which is a desktop running windows, at least restores itself but it's just that it dose so at the most inconvenient time so i don't go near that one. is there a class that i should be taking to teach me how to avoid this type of situation?
anyhow there are plenty other misdoings on my computer, but i've taken up enough space here. maybe somebody knows enough about whatever this  is and you're able to quickly diagnose this as a small thing where it just makes me out to be doing something extremely wrong and somehow causing my own problems, i'll take the blame. i just need computer back.  i'll take ANY suggestions and i am fully grateful for any words of wisdom, thank you!

Thanks for the response, but I never said that I was getting texts from strangers.  I said that messages are showing up in iMessage conversations that appear to have come from me but which I didn't type.  iMessage and texting are not the same thing.  Furthermore, I've had this phone number for over a decade.

  • My arrow keys start start repeating without touching them and a string of periods are displayed in an entry field (e.g. credential to log in). Or if I type an arrow key, they immediately start repeating in perpituity. It's like a ghost in the machine.

After the last OS X update (a security update I think), two things happened:
my iMac would not boot (gray screen) or if it did boot, the mouse wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to the PW field to log in - nor did tabbing or any keystrokes get me there. I fixed this by unpludding peripherals (back up drive), but know I can't boot unless they are unplugged and it makes using TimeMachine a pain in the arse.
My wired, extended mac keyboard now types without me, primarily, as far as I can tell, the arrow key(s). .................................... So, for example, those periods you see here are because I touched the right arrow key and off it went until I pressed ESC. Also, sometimes they just start going off on their own. For example, I can be in sleep mode and all of a sudden the screen will wake and the PW field will start filling with periods, just like you see above. ***?
Seriously, you would think that apple would have a response for this. I have searched their support site and NOTHING. I've seen some older threads on reseting certain things. Does anyone have any summer 2013 updates?
    Thank You!!!

    kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • ITunes, there's a ghost in my machine!

I called Apple and they wanted like $49 for the phone help. I decided to trash my iTunes folder and re-install. I'll let you know how that goes. But, I know what you're talking about. You open it, and it freezes. Making your mac unuseable.

  • Ghost In My Machine

I think my mac is haunted.
I installed Tiger 10.4 from a shop-bought installation disc over OX 10.4.3. I had problems, first with various mac apps, then with Photoshop. The dock would freeze, apps would mysteriously quit halfway through opening a document, the colour wheel would sit there turning
To attempt to sort it out, I backed up everything - all data and non-mac apps - did an archive and install and hoped this would sort the problem. Everything seemed fine for a couple of days, then the problems were back. Eventually, i tried an Erase and Install and this initially also seemed fine.
Today the problems returned. One time my monitor went completely blank and I was forced to restart. The Photoshop document I'd been working on told me that it couldn't be opened as it was not compatible with this version of Photoshop. (I'm running 7.1).
Before and after each reinstallm, I've run Techtool Pro to see if there are any hardware problems - none found. I've replaced two suspect RAM modules which didn't pass the hardware test on my original Panther installation disk. Each time I've repaired permissions before and after each installation, and indeed after re-installation of any third party apps. I regularly run Cocktail and Techtools to try and maintain the system. Everything I can think of to cure my mac of its workshy possession I have tried.
I am at a loss to figure out what's going on. Should I completely erase my hard disk and start over? I have a second internal hard disk, to which I back-up data. Could this be the problem somehow?
    Help! Any advice hugely appreciated.
    G5 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4)   1.5 GB DDR SDRAM

No trouble with my old Epson 750 printer, and I will look at the Vuescan solution - thanks, lamarche.
However, before I try that, I now have another problem to sort. I fear my problems may be back: I worked late into the night, following all advice upon these boards for an erase and reinstallation to the letter. I repaired permissions before and after the reinstall, cleaned caches and disconnected all third-party hardware. This morning, on startup, everything seemed OK. Internet connections: no problem. Suddenly, the ol' colour wheel was back during a quick spin with Safari. Then I got a kernel crash screen. I restarted. I hoped it was an aberration and continued.
When I came to install my just-bought upgrade of Photsohop CS2, however, I was told by a message that there was a problem during "installation", that no prior version of Photoshop could be found (I was using Photoshop 7.0 - of course, this was erased during the reinstallation). So I reinstalled 7.0 from the original installation CD, thinking I could now upgrade using the CS2 DVD. But now, the CS2 installer refuses to work at all - when I click on it, the installer sparks inside the dock, then vanishes again.
Is this an issue with the Adobe installer, or is it to do with my system? Am I doing something wrong? Without Photoshop, I can't work and I can't run 7.0 as Classic has now vanished, too. Is it the mac itself (all "passed" hardware tests notwithstanding), the system ... what?
Can anyone help shed some light on what I should do next? I am at my wit's end!

  • IMessage - a ghost in the machine?

Something happened to me last night, and it was very disturbing.  I was having an iMessage conversation with a friend and suddenly he was responding to things I hadn't typed.  On my screen, the messages looked like they came from me (i.e., they were on the right-side of the screen), but I wasn't typing them.  Whoever typed them seemed confused as well.  It was like having crossed wires in the old telephone system.

Thanks for the response, but I never said that I was getting texts from strangers.  I said that messages are showing up in iMessage conversations that appear to have come from me but which I didn't type.  iMessage and texting are not the same thing.  Furthermore, I've had this phone number for over a decade.

  • AppleTV Ghost in the Machine?

    Greetings?
Every so often, I notice that my AppleTV has turned itself on! Yikes! I intentionally keep it "off", that is, no power light on. However, I have noticed a few times that it has somehow turned itself on, with the power light shining away brightly! What's up? Can Apple turn it on via the Internet? Is there some secret programming code set to turn it on at a certain time? Anybody else have this occurance? Hmmmm...weird?
    Thanks & God Bless!
    Rick

Weird. I have the sneaking suspicion that the
AppleTV is being activated via the Internet?????
The Apple TV never really turns off (unless you
unplug it, of course). As explained in Apple TV: About standby mode, it still
maintains a network connection so that it will appear
in any iTunes devices lists & sync new content as
    required.
While the article doesn't specifically say it will
"wake" in response to an iTunes event, I suspect this
could occur if, for instance, your Mac or PC is
running the app & say, a podcast or season ticket
subscription update occurs automatically or manually
-- IOW, the computer hosting iTunes could initiate a
sync event & thereby wake the Apple TV remotely.
The Apple TV syncs without turning on, so this theory is not valid.
I can quite happily sync lots of content with the Apple TV in its 'standby' (off) mode.
I too have seen the same issue with the Apple TV turning itself on, in my case it has done it overnight. There have been no remote IR signals while I have been in bed, nor have there been any recordings or Podcast updates from my computer as it is asleep overnight (and is still asleep when I get up).
There is clearly some external influence causing this wake up, maybe it is some kind of internet update, but why must it wake to do this as it syncs OK without waking?
    Just try this for yourself.
    1. Turn the Apple TV off (standby)
    2. Download a Podcast or change some settings in iTunes that causes the Apple TV to sync.
You will notice that it does not wake up, but it still syncs.
