Ahhh error 1604 on my ipod! cant restore!

so one day my ipod touch froze up so i turned it off and back on and the apple logo wouldn't go away. then the little white spinning thing showed up and it spins for a while and then turns off and restarts the process. when i plug it in to itunes it isnt recognized unless i put in in recovery mode, which i have. i download the new software or whatever and then try to restore and all it says is unable to restore error 1604. ive tried practically everything. nothing works. i really dont want to have to buy a new ipod but i dont know what to do HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People who have still not solved error 1604 and had a bricked iPhone no matter what they tried, might manage to revive it by following these instructions (on how to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4).
You will need the following:
- iTunes 7.5 (NOT 7.7)
- iPhone firmware iPhone1,11.1.4_4A102Restore.ipsw
Step 1:
Uninstall iTunes 7.7 completely if you have it and restart your computer.
Step 2:
Install iTunes 7.5
Step 3:
Your iPhone should be in 2 states, either stuck on the "Slide to make emergency calls" screen, or you tried to restore before and it's stuck on the new look "connect to iTunes" screen. Either way you're ok.
Enter the phone in DFU mode (You must have the iPhone connected to the computer and iTunes running). To do this, hold the power & the home button down for about 9 seconds.
Why 9s? Well people say 10s, but it depends how slow you are at counting. Too short and it doesn't work, too long and the apple logo appears.
When you hit about 6-7s the screen should turn off, leave it for 2 more seconds and release the power button, STILL holding the home button. If all went well, you should NOT see an apple logo, the screen should be dead.
Keep holding home until windows/Mac informs you that it's found new hardware, OR iTunes tells you that your iPhone is in recovery mode. Remember, screen should be blank.
If you see an apple logo, repeat the process for less time until you get it right. Took me a little time.
Step 4:
Shift/Option click the restore button in iTunes and select the iPhone1,1_1.1.4 firmware you downloaded.
Fingers crossed it should restore back to 1.1.4.

Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the alert when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • ERROR 1604 AGAIN! CAN'T RESTORE iPHONE, GRRRRR!

Why is it that everytime there's a new software update for the iPhone it completely crashes my iPhone and then takes over 4 hours to get it working again? Seriously, I'm not lying, you can check my history and all the topics I've created in the past...THEY ARE ALL ABOUT THE SAME **** THING: ERROR 1604 WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RESTORE! I've deleted iTunes, re-downloaded/re-installed it, I've restarted my PC several times, I've tried using multiple USB cords, I've used all 4 USB ports on my PC...NOTHING WORKS! And now, for the first time...once it says: "preparing iPhone for restore" it makes the screen on my iPhone flash different colors like Joseph's technicolor dreamcoat, LOL! Can anyone help me get my iPhone restored and running again, PLEASE???

Ok, so I finally took it to the Apple store and they were able to restore it within minutes without a problem. I took it home, put an ad on Craigslist, sold my 2G iPhone for $170, went to the AT&T store, bought a brand new 16GB iPhone 3G S and brought it home...AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN TRYING TO INSTALL THE LATEST SOFTWARE UPDATE! I brought it to my GF"s house and tried her laptop...IT WORKED PERFECTLY! So I guess it's my PC?

  • Error 1604 - Charge your iPod !

    I received my Touch yesterday.
After only a few minutes trying to initialize it on my PC (XP), the unit went dark. Trying to sync it with a Powerbook G4 (and USB2.0) resulted in Unknown Error 1604.
After reading answers in this forum, and ignoring the advice of someone at my nearest Apple store (send it back), I resolved this issue - my unit was simply out of battery.
Lesson : when you get a new unit out of the box, be patient. Get a wall charger and fully charge your ipod before attempting to synchronize it with itunes.

Yes, you can use a charger that has the USB port. The charger should be 5V DC nominal. Can be as high as 5.2 VDC.

My ipod is locked out and it wasn't backed up to computer. When I try to restore I'm getting error message 9006. How can i get it to restore?

    Configure your security software
Check your security software and settings, which can block ports and prevent connection to Apple servers during update and restore.
    Common errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006, 9807, 9844. Sometimes as a result of this issue, a device might stop responding during the restore process.

  • How can I fix error 14 in my iPod Touch restore?

When I try to restore and update my iPod Touch, appears Error 14 in my iTunes interface. How can I fix that error?

Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

  • Frozen Ipod, cant restore

My 30gig video Ipod was hooked into it's home computer when the power went out, keeping the "Do Not Disconnect" screen on the Ipod. I would restore it to its factory condition, however, the computer no longer regognizes the ipod for some reason. iTunes does not recognize it, and nor does it appear in "my computer", but whenever I try to use the ipod updater, the computer freezes. I don't know how to fix the iPod and would appreciate your help.

  • Update to 1.1.2 failed, now I cant restore

I bought a used ipod touch with 1.1.1 firmware, but while it was preparing for the update to 1.1.2 it stopped and and told me that it had encountered an unknown error (1604).
Now I cant restore the ipod. Everytime I connect it to my mac in itunes it asks me to restore it, and when I press "restore" it starts the process and starts to prepare it for the restoration, but after a few minutes where it just says " preparing for restoration" it stops and tells me that I have encountered and unknown error.
    I run itunes 7.5.
Hvad can I do fix it?
    Help would be most appreciated

  • Error 1604 restoring iPod touch

A few months ago, my iPod touch started having some minor issues. It would randomly stop playing and sometimes wouldn't recognize when it was plugged in and wouldn't charge. I restored it and the problem was solved. Recently it started doing it again, but this time it won't restore. It gives me a "Preparing iPod for Restore" message for several minutes, and then gives me an error 1604. I've tried restoring on two different computers with the same results. It was previously usable, but now its stuck in restore mode. Any ideas?

Here's some ideas from the Apple support pages:
