AHT begins to load, ejects disc, crashes.

Hello-
I'm having some issues with running AHT on my Early 2008 Mac Pro so I can diagnose some USB port issues. It is running Lion 10.7.3, so I had to copy the .diagnostics folder from the original Install disc that shipped with the computer, to the hard drive using sudo cp -R. After holding "D" at startup, AHT begins to load with the little computer icon and loading bar, then it ejects the disc and displays a blue screen for only a split second that says:
"'apple_hardware_test.acm' exited with 0xffffffff
Status: 0xFFFFFFFF
efiboot loaded from device: Acpi (PNP0A03.0)/Pci(1F12)/SATA(2.0/HD(Part3.Sig24A996E9 [area cut off because I had to record the screen on my phone]
boot file path: \com.apple.recovery.boot\boot.efi"
And then proceeds to boot into Lion Recovery.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Michael

This is a bit embarassing...
When I went to copy the CPU_AHD file over, an error popped up saying the disc could not be read. Sure enough, upon looking at the disc, it's perfectly flawless except for a small scratch (where I assume the CPU_AHT file lies), and so this was a problem of the media itself being flawed rather than a software or hardware problem. I managed to download AHT from http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html with a little modification of another image's URL, since the page doesn't list all of the images that are actually available. Everything is working now, so thank you very much for helping me find the problem!

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements running on?
With your Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD can you burn to folder successfully for AVCHD on DVD disc?
Just before you were ready to start the burn to AVCHD on DVD disc, In the Quality Area of the burn to AVCHD on DVD, what are the readings for Space Required and Bitrate (with and without a check mark next to "Fit Content To Available Space"?
Please review your Scratch Disk situation (locations and free space at the locations). See Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks as well as the contents of the project's files/folders in the 12.0 Folder in Libraries/Documents/Premiere Elements (if Windows).
Are you running from a User Account with Administrative Privileges + Run As Administrator?
And have you explored other disc brands as well as types?

  • DVD Superdrive keeps ejecting discs

My trusty old PB G4 has just started to eject discs from the dvd superdrive. I've tried various discs (mainly cd-r) but for some reason it squeaks and squawks then ejects the disc????
Could this be a media problem or perhaps.......a hardware problem?
    Any thoughts gladly appreciated.

I'm having this problem with my 2.5 Penryn Macbook Pro
And I had the same problem with my last mac which was a 2.8 24" silver iMac.
I took it to be repaired, they replaced the superdrive, and then I sold it on. But now the person i sold the iMac to is saying they are having the same problem.
It must be a fault with Apple's superdrives. My external firewire slot loading burner works perfectly.
Unfortunately I'll have to use that and wait until I buy my next mac before i can take this one in to be repaired. Hopefully they dont just replace the drive with another one of the same model.
I found a solution for this problem with old powerbooks:

I have to eject a CD or DVD 10 or 20 times. It makes the eject noise then the disc doesn't come out and it gets remounted again. After 10 or 20 goes suddenly one time it comes all the way out.
Any clues - is this a hardware fault?

  • HT1338 my dvd player ejects disc when inserted

my dvd player ejects disc when inserted on my macbook pro running on 10.8.4 OS X

Sounds like it could be a problem with your DVD drive. Usually it would be a problem with the lens. Since as far as I can tell it is ejecting discs right away, the usual fix of a cleaning disc is not possible.
If it is a slot loader like the offical Apple SuperDrive, you may be able to try a crude clean with the Wii Lens Cleaning Kit, although designed for the Nintendo Wii, it should work to a degree with other slot loaders.
Due to the design of the cleaner, it should remain in the drive until it is time to remove it. Though usually a dirty lens will still read some discs.
However, if the lens is sufficiently clean then the only other possibilities are a calibration problem or a hardware failure.
Certain lower quality drives can deviate from optimal calibration of the read laser over time, though with some drives it is possible to fix this, the fix has the potential to do more harm than good.
If it's a hardware failure, whether it can be fixed depends upon the type of fault, but new external drives are cheaper than most repair costs these days.
I'm not 100% familar with how OS X handles Disc drives, so I can't rule out the possibility of a software issue.

  • Safari: Pages begin to load and then go to blank gray screen?

Hi there. I am using Safari 6.1.1 on a late 2009 iMac. I've never had this problem before, and it's worth noting that Safari does not actually crash -- it remains responsive but the pages don't load properly. They begin to load and but it's as if, the instant the full page appears, it cuts to a blank gray screen. It doesn't happen with absolutely every site but it occurs with the majority I'm visiting. Obviously it makes Safari unusable so I'd appreciate any help that could be offered. Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • My CD/DVD drive will not eject disc

I have just recently purchased a new Macbook and I had the system for less then a few hours and there was already a problem with the system. The only thing that I have done to it is run the system updates and install the new Leopard OS. Upon completing the installation the disc would not eject from the drive. I have tried all the ways possible to eject it, but every time it makes three clicking noises as if it is trying to eject then the disc just reloads. I have even gone so far as to bring it in for service where they just shipped it to Apple to fix it. They claimed that the bottom of the case was bent and that Apple replaced it therefore fixing the problem. To my dismay when I brought the system back home the problem was still there. Apple wants me to ship it back to them, but I was hoping that there is some unseen solution to my problem, because I'm getting really feed up with this because I have owned this product for almost 3 weeks now and still have not been able to use it. So any help out there would be greatly appreciated.

  • Vista problem, cant eject Disc 1

Trying to install Vista Business on a 50GB partition of my new iMac (2GB) running 10.5.2.
Installation begins and Windows goes along perfectly and then asks me for disc 2. Problem is, I have no way to eject disc 1. The keyboard eject button does not work, windows offers me no button, and there is of course no way to manually eject.
The Microsoft tells me that Vista comes ONLY in multi disc install and I see that some of you have installed Vista with Bootcamp. HOW ARE YOU DOING IT?
    Thanks

    Natgreg:
    Welcome to the Forums:
That Upgrade version of Windows XP is your problem and therefore you are unable to install XP on your computer. Boot Camp requires a full version of Windows XP/SP2 or any full version of Vista.
You said that your work has over 200 computers and everyone has upgraded to windows XP. Remember that your work probably has Windows based PCs and therefore those people already had an earlier version of windows installed and therefore they could upgrade. On your Mac, you will are installing windows for the first time and therefore will need a FULL RETAIL VERSION (OEM VERSIONS WILL WORK TOO).
Where do you get a full version of windows? You will need to purchase it.

  • Macbook wont eject disc

    hey,
i just got my macbook today, black bto 1gb ram, 120gb hdd. the first disc i put in was microsoft office to install. the problem is the disc wont eject. ive tried using the eject button on the keyboard, dragging the disc to the trash bin, rebooting holding down the mouse button the whole time. every time the disc attempts to eject but doesnt and revs up again, loading the disc so it shows up mounted on the desktop again. any help greatly appreciated, applecare is closed right now and my apple store genius bars are full for the night.

This same situation happened to me with my new MacBook. I got a Family Guy DVD stuck in the drive. The first time it happened I figured it was a fluke. I banged it around a little bit and it came out. I thought everything would be fine. Man, was I wrong. The second time the DVD remained stuck. It would not come out. The computer would try to eject it with no success.
So, since I am a U.S. Marine stationed in West Africa, getting my MacBook back to Apple for repair wasn't so easy. The first thing I did was DHL my MacBook to a friend in the states so he could take it to an Apple Store for repair. It seemed pretty straight forward. The only issue was I would have had to wait for a long time to use my new MacBook again. I was willing to make the sacrifice.
Well DHL thought it would be a good idea to smash my lap top into bits before delivering it. So instead of just a stuck DVD I had a smashed laptop to deal with. I was a little furious. So, I had to make a claim with DHL which they told me could take up to 90 days. So I just went ahead and bought a new MacBook and I'm still waiting for my claim from DHL to go through.
I hope my new MacBook doesn’t have the same problem. If it does I’m just going to get a PC and I HATE PC’s. But they are cheaper.
Bottom line: There seems to be a problem with many of the DVD drives on the MacBooks. I just might use an external one.

  • Usb superdrive will only eject discs, connected to macbook pro

new usb superdrive connected to new macbook pro, superdrive will not read discs, just ejects discs.

    Hello wwboa
For issues with your SuperDrive not reading the disks and spitting them back out, check out the troubleshooting below to get it working for you.
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Regards,
    -Norm G.

  • My 2007 intel imac ejects discs within 2 seconds

My 2007 intel imac ejects discs within 2 seconds.  The last time I used my disc hardware was to install software for a new Cannon all in one.  It worked perfectly.  I have tried many discs including one movie made on this same machine.  Pleease help me troubleshoot before I have to transport my computer to the Apple store.   Thank you in advance.

It could be that the laser has dust on it; a laser cleaning disk is available at stores which specialize in audio and video- BestBuy, or OfficeDepot would be a place to start. Run a cleaning session to see how that plays out. It could be the optical drive itself. The best approach is first to try steps that do not involve transporting your iMac as you indicate.

  • How far should SuperDrive eject discs?

How far does your SuperDrive eject discs?
The one on my MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 2.33 GHz ejects recordable discs only about 1-3/8 in, which makes it impossible to remove them without touching the top or bottom surface. My newer MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 3.06 GHz ejects them much farther (about halfway), so they can be handled by the edges instead.
The problem doesn't occur with commercially pressed installation discs, only with discs I use to record on (Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R, Verbatim 8X DVD-R and Taiyo-Yuden 8X CD-R).
This is the second replacement of the drive from AppleCare with the same problem. (At least I think they replaced it a second time. The service record said, "Doesn't eject media" instead of "Doesn't fully eject media," so maybe they tested it and thought it was fine.)
Is this normal behavior? Anyone else seeing this?
    Thank you,
    David

    MacBookPro Lover wrote:
My MBP 15" doesn't eject very far, but a little more than what your's does (I'd say around 2"). It does ok for me, though.
Do you notice any difference between commercially recorded discs and recordable ones?
