AHT Error: 4MOT/2/40000004: BOOSTA-907

So I was running the Apple Hardware Test looking initially for a memory issue, which I was able to isolate. However, the second time through I got the above error: 4MOT/2/40000004: BOOSTA-907 From what I have read this is likely the fan on Processor Socket A. So, going from there, I have a few questions:
Is this a user replaceable fan?
If not, what do I need to look to purchase?
Could there be damage to my processors?
And is there a way to 'clear' this error so that I can run the AHT again to search for further errors?
Thanks so much!

This is probably one of a few semi-standard processor coolers.
Unless only the wire is disconnected, fixing this will require pulling the Cooler assembly out and replacing it, or taking it apart and replacing its fan. I have no idea whether these fans are available on the open market -- they generally are only available by the pallet-load.
Re-Installing the cooler requires cleaning the mating surfaces and properly applying good quality thermal paste, so many folks who are not handy pay a technician to do at least this step. Since everything may not work out, there is a premium built into the price from most shops for this work to cover the possibility that the processor never works again and they have to buy a replacement for customer satisfaction.
Apple's flat-rate repair for this item may turn out to be cheaper than an independent shop, because Apple service exists to make you a happy customer, and they use flat rate because they do a large enough volume that "contingencies" average out over all their repairs.

Fans are running permanantly and this is the error I get when running apple hardware test.

SNS is a sensor error. The sensors read actual temperatures at several points inside the Mac chassis to decide when things are heating up, and which fan or fans speed up to improve cooling.
Some of those sensrs are just a thermal-sensitive transistor mounted to a surface that conducts heat, and replacement does not run into big money. Disconnected wires are sometimes a possibility, especially if things were changed nearby, e.g., new heatsink.

  • AHT error 4MOT/4/4000000:HD_1372

iMac 2010 running 10.6.8. has been booting up to spinning wheel on desktop wallpaper then freezing and only works in safe mode. after some research i ran a hardware test and on completion the message "Alert! Apple hardware test has detected an error 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1372." any info you could give me on this error message and/or how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Apple do not publish the meaning of these error codes, you simply have to search them & see what other users suggest.

Occasionally you get accurate answers from people who know what these things mean.
Some threads on this site indicate it could be the HD or the HD cooling fan. ('HDD' could mean 'Hard Disk Drive'). Only Apple can tell you specific meanings.
Personally on such an old iMac I would backup (if you don't have a working copy already) & fit a new HD. Whilst inside you can also see the condition of any fans.
iFixit has lots of good info on replacing parts, otherwise take it to an Apple store or authorised repair centre & be prepared to pay for the repair.

Time for a new Drive. Depending on which iMac you have, this can range from very simple to quite complicated. iFixit has directions for many models.

If it looks uncomplicated, it can be quite inexpensive to do this yourself. Post back if you want information on obtaining a drive.

Alternatively, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Error code"4MOT/2/40000004:ODD-4562" what does this mean?

I AM ALWAYS VERY PLEASED WITH APPLE COMPUTERS AND MY IMAC EARLY 2009 AND IT IS GOING VERY WELL WHEN I RUN EXTENDED HARDWARE TEST I GET THE FOLLOWING ERROR CODE    "4MOT/2/40000004:ODD-4562"  AND I AM WONDERING WHAT THE ERROR CODE MEANS AND WHEN I RUN ISTAT PRO IT SHOWS ALL THREE FANS GOING NORMAL SPEED AND NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN COMPUTER ?

That's a SuperDrive fan motor problem. This means that the fan isn't working correctly.
Take the iMac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the SuperDrive replaced. I recommend you to do this even if you see that the ODD fan is working at a normal speed, because it can fail at any moment. To make sure it's not a mistake, run Apple Hardware Test again

  • Error code:"4MOT/2/40000004: ODD" means what?

I do the hardware test on my two iMac 24".
Both show error code "4MOT/2/40000004: ODD".
Does anybody know what it means?

Re: your more recent post that got disappeared, Apple's service and parts channel operates on a very different basis to its supply channel. Supply builds to order and ships direct at the beginning of a product lifecycle to meet demand, and then as the production capacity has increased beyond demand, pre-builds inventory and ships through distribution and starts deviating parts supply to the service channel.
The service channel receives shipments of parts in batches, when the supply channel can spare them from production. Service then ships out parts as needed for repairs. Defects are usually proportionate to the age of the machine, so there is less need for spares at the beginning of a product life cycle, so service takes a low priority over production. The best thing to do with a mac that is dead on arrival is to return it and get a new one, since it will take ages to repair it. Apple then repairs, refurbishes and resells your old system, when service has capacity to do so.

You can buy and install the hard drive you want to. However, on Late 2009 and newer iMacs the temperature sensor is in the hard drive, so if you replace it with a hard drive that has not got a temperature sensor you will have serious fan problems.
You have got an Early 2009 iMac, so do not worry about this. You can buy a hard drive at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-SerialATA/ Follow these steps > http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+24-Inch+EMC+2267+Hard+Drive+Replacement/9 028

  • AHT Error message - 4MOT/4/40000003: HDD - 1248

Hi folks........ i'm looking for some help on a AHT error message?
    The error message is 4MOT /4/40000003: HDD - 1248
Has anyone any ideas what this is?
    Thanks
    Paul

You're looking at a drive issue, possibly heat and or fan related. Google is pretty good at pulling up posts for the error message.
If the system is still working and the drive is accessible make sure you do a backup right way and then make an appointment with Apple.
    good luck
    regards

  • 2008 iMac running beautifully untill recently. Screen glitches and freezing. Apple Hardware test showed error code  4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have not seen others with this code. Guessing it is a fan issue based on the ODD and HDD error codes

computer felt hot and while running apple hardware test the screen glitches covered the screen and it froze. Now computer wont boot up. Again AHT code is 4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have just seen ODD and HDD codes discussed on other threads. Those were hardrive or superdrive fans, so I am guessing this is a fan issue and then it fried by graphics card. Any help as to whether this is game over or worth repairing would be very appreciated.

You need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional evaluation. Apple does not publish the codes from AHT, you can Google the code you got and see if you can determine what it means however the best method is to let a pro handle it.

  • Mac Mini Kernal Panics and AHT error - long description

I have a late 2009 Mini that has had kernal panic issues for some time. When I first bought the computer it had 1/120 and I upgraded it to 2/320 myself. It is hooked up to my HDTV as a media server and it started getting kernel panics running Netflix in Safari. Sometimes the fan would spin up to very high levels while running Virtual Box with Windows XP.
It seemed to be the added RAM and I pulled it. Panics went away but now it is very slow. I purchased 2 - 2GB RAM from OWC and installed in machine. It was good for a while but then started kernel panics again.
Recently my MS bluetooth keyboard started having issues connecting and the panics got worse. I ran AHT on the machine and got the following error code:
4MOT/2/40000004: Master - 0 I reran the test and got 4MOT/2/40000004: Master - some 4 digit number I didn't write down because someone unplugged the machine while I was getting a pen.
It appears to be heat related because after a kernel panic if I leave the machine turned off for half an hour or so it works again for a while but if I just restart it will panic again within the next 15 minutes.

Thank you for the answer. I suspected a fan issue considering the symptoms. I know others have had fan issues with other MOT codes but wasn't sure.
It is odd that it says MOT instead of, oh, say, FAN.
I think my first step will be to run the fan utility and see what the fan and temps are doing before I go to a Genius bar.
Go ahead and make the appointment; if the AHT says it's bad, it needs attention.

  • AHT error gone after removing Boot Camp

    Hi,
Recently I ran AHT on my 2011 27" iMac and got this error: 4MOT/4/40000003: HDD- 1229
The error relates to the HDD fan.
I ran the test 5 times and received the same error (last 4 digits change), so I have booked it in to my local AASP to be checked under Applecare.
I was preparing it for collection today and decided to remove my Boot Camp partition. Afterwards, I ran the AHT 3 times and now I'm getting "no problems found".
Is it likely that the Boot Camp partition was causing the error? If so, can I safetly dismiss it?
By the way, I'm an ACSP and I've gone through all the usual diagnostic proceedures.

It's strange that Windows causes that type of problems. However, I recommend you to take the Mac to the Apple Store so they can check your computer. Also, I recommend you to run Apple Hardware Test again, because it may not detect a hard drive problem

  • AHT erreur 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1289

    bonjour,
    salutations

From the results of a few searches online, the AHT error appears to mean this:
4MOT (motor) & some suggest that would be a fan issue, perhaps cooling HDD.
However there may be more than one thing going on in the computer and you
may see if an Apple Store with Genius bar could help diagnose similar results
and give you their take on the meaning of these codes. Appointments usually
are necessary, and even if the computer no longer has Applecare coverage,
you usually can get some help and an idea what's going on. If no Apple Store
(with genius bar) you may need to try an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Or check around for an Apple Specialist. You'd likely pay for diagnostics, then.
Sometimes if there's excessive dust in the computer, it may show things are
acting up, such as overheating; or fan failure, cooling issues, etc. Or a hard
disk drive that may be running hot or on its last legs & needing replaced.
The error indicates a hardware cause, so this may be a symptom of pending failure.
But the temperature sensors may be acting up, if this relates, and the margin of
error for them may be compromised if there is dust inside affecting cooling efficiency.
Without knowing for sure, the exact build model iMac, can't say if there may be
another issue going on to contribute to the Error message. Or if there had been
a EFI firmware update for that computer, still in existence, that may apply. Given
the age and wear, an earlier iMac may need a replacement hard disk drive by now.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My Mac is doing strange things: delaying between users, mouse flickering and bouncing, gets stuck with rainbow wheel flickering. I ran the appel hardware test and it detected an error: 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1233 Does anybody know what that means? HELP!

My imac is doing strange things:
-delaying between users: when closing session it goes to blue, then takes a while to appear users signin box, and then wont recognize mouse command to enter until a couple of minutes later... then everything seems alright until....
-it gets stuck between things, the rainbow wheel appears and its just delays there forever....
-and every now and then the mouse starts flickering and bouncing wildly onscreen.
I ran the appel hardware test and it detected an error:
    4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1233
Does anybody know what that means? HELP!

WZZZ answered about where to get iStat. And do check the SMART status. If it is an overheating problem due to a fan or logic board problem, your hard drive is possibly cooking itself to death. If so it isn't a faulty hard drive even though the hard drive might fail. So assuming it's a temperature problem, even if you are able to repair things on the disk with software, that is working on symptoms, not causes. I could be wrong however.
RE: AppleCare: Your iMac came with one year of AppleCare (Apple's warranty program), but within the first year you can buy 2 more years. You have to extend by the one year anniversary of purchase of the computer. Your 10,1 is too old to still be in the first year, and since you asked what it was, I'm sure you don't have it. Bottom line meaning is that whatever this problem turns out to be, you'll have to pay for it. Unless there is something like this. It is for 2011 iMacs with certain Seagate drives. You can put in your serial number for fun, but it looks like yours is too old. Lastly, some people have had Apple help them anyway if it is just out of warranty, but many have not. Your machine is one of these. Type in 10,1 in the search box. Is there an Apple Store near you? Just b/c it's out of warranty doesn't mean you shouldn't have it looked at by Apple. But no one here can say at all what Apple will or will not do.
Hope you get it taken care of!
