.ai file becomes blurry upon scale-down in InDesign, help!

I admittedly don't have much illustrator experience (learning though!), so I apologize if this is an easy fix!
The Problem: My vector images are okay when they are large, but become fuzzy when they are scaled down. I am in high-quality display mode and I've tried both preview and presentation mode. I need high-res images for both internet presentation and printing.
To complicate things further, the images were originally from AutoCAD, opened in illustrator (where they look fine), then saved as an .ai file.
Any ideas why this is happening?!
Thanks!
–Mark

I tried exporting it to PDF. It does look okay, but only okay.
The text that was from the original drawing doesn't look that great (slightly pixelated). In general, the image just doesn't look very graphic, despite being an interesting design. There just seems to be a slightly halo (maybe one or two pixel big) around all the lines.
Any way to clean this up?
Thanks!
M
PS on another note - is there a way to increase line weights in illustrator? I remember someone telling me this was possible...

  • Sound file becomes stretched upon roundtrip from FCP

I don't know soundtrack very well, but I am trying to clean up and audio track. When I try to send it to soundtrack, the file becomes time stretched and the pitch is also lower. this has happened a few times and that is why I haven't bothered to learn soundtrack, but I need to do this by the end of the weekend.
I have soundtrack 1 from FCP 5 studio.

Check the timecode rate and sync options in Protools. It sounds like a timecode or samplerate mismatch.
Especially note that 23.976fps OMFs from FCP (probably STP as well) show up in Protools as 24fps sessions. Change the PTs timecode to 23.976 to realign.

  • Search bar becomes rectangle upon clicking in itunes. Help?

Everytime i try to search through my list of songs, the search bar loses its somewhat oval shape and becomes a rectangle!!! Someone help??

Have you tried running *Disk Utility* and asking it to verify/repair 'Permissions'? Whilst you are at it, get DU to verify your hard drive to make sure that it is ok.
If it passes all these tests and you still have the problem, post back.

I am using a Mac and when I save my files as a jpeg, the files become much smaller, and consequently darker and blurrier.  What can I do to fix this?  I have tried to figure out how to chat with someone at Adobe, but they certainly don't make it easy to do.  At the moment, this program is useless to me.  Very depressing....

    Hello,
I would like to inform you that not all the browsers and online PDF readers support copying text from a PDF. If you have opened the PDF online, please download PDF file to your computer and then open the file in Adobe Reader.
Please share a screenshot if the issue still persists.

  • How can I scale an image without it becoming blurry?

I'm following this tutorial on youtube and I'm doing everything he says, but when I scale the image it becomes blurry on mine and his was still perfect.

Rick is correct, but there are some features that can give better results than the default scaling:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/detail-preserving-upscale-effect.html
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/06/bicubic-resampling-for-improved-scaling-and-ot her-transformations-in-after-effects.html
By the way, it helps if you give a lot more information when asking a question. We have no idea what you've tried so far, and we don't even know what version of After Effects you're using.

  • BUG: Rectangles inside FW symbols become blurry/misaligned

There seems to be a problem with the use of Rectangles within Symbols in Fireworks CS6, CS5 and earlier.
The problem is that they become blurry. More exactly, they become repositioned within the symbol—aligned to the half-pixel—and their edges become anti-aliased as a result. For example, here's a series of rectangles that I'd created on the canvas to visualize a set of color swatches:
Here's the same set of rectangles after having been saved as a Symbol and imported into another document:
At first I thought this was a problem with Symbols in general, but then I discovered that it only occurred with Rectangles—a.k.a. "rectangle primitives", which are a special kind of grouped vector object created using the Rectangle tool—and only when the contents of the Symbol in which they resided had a pixel width or height ending in an odd number (i.e., 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9).
    THE PROBLEM
Here's what I've observed, in greater detail. Start with two Rectangles, 99 x 99 pixels—one with a stroke only, the other with a fill only. Select the first Rectangle and choose Modify > Symbol > Convert to Symbol, and then do the same for the second. Save the file. Everything looks OK, right?
Now close the file, and reopen it. Have a look at the thumbnail previews within your Document Library. They look a little... fuzzy, yes?
Click on the name of one of the symbols in the Document Library to open the Symbol Properties dialog, and then click OK. Now look on the canvas...
Yikes. The symbol instance containing the stroked Rectangle (on the left) has become quite blurred. Now, back within the Document Library panel, click on the thumbnail preview of the other symbol to enter Edit Symbol mode, and then return to the document canvas...
Yikes again. The symbol instance containing the fill Rectangle (on the right) has also become blurred—horizontally, in this case. They both look worse now.
Note that it's not the instances nor their placement on the canvas that's the problem—you can move them anywhere on the canvas, and they'll still look just as bad—but the symbols themselves. Double click on one of the symbols to enter Edit Symbol mode and select the rectangle. Its X-Y position in the Properties panel will look normal, but if you open the Transform panel extension (http://www.senocular.com/fireworks/extensions/?entry=572), you'll see the real story: The rectangle has been re-aligned to the half-pixel.
Importantly, the trigger here isn't the dimensions of the rectangle, per se, but of the symbol contents as a whole. If the symbol contents have an even-numbered dimension, alignment remains crisp and pixel-perfect along that dimension; if the symbol contents have an odd-numbered pixel dimension, a blurry misalignment occurs. For example, here's a series of "even" rectangles (20 x 20 pixels) that, with their single-pixel spacing, comprise an odd-numbered selection (125px), shown before and after symbol conversion:
Incidentally, the same problem reveals itself when you import these symbols into another document using the Import Symbols command within the Document Library options menu.
    THE FIX
The patch for this bug, once it's occurred, is to edit the symbol. In Edit Symbol mode, select all objects—or just the misaligned Rectangle objects—and choose Modify > Snap To Pixel.
The fly in the ointment here is that, in many cases, the original alignment is not preserved. The rectangles may now be misaligned in relation to other objects in the symbol, as well as to other objects on the canvas. Therefore, to finish the job, you may need to also nudge the rectangle(s) by a pixel horizontally or vertically using the keyboard arrow keys.
The good news is that once a symbol has been fixed using Snap To Pixel, its alignment and clarity should remain fixed.
    THE WORKAROUND
The surest way to avoid this issue, of course, is to avoid including Rectangles in your symbols—not the geometric shape, but the grouped vector object as it's created by the Rectangle tool. Therefore, prior to converting a selection to a symbol, check for any Rectangles within the selection and ungroup them using the Modify > Ungroup command, which will convert them into simple paths, unaffected by this bug. (Chances are, by the time you're converting these objects to symbols, you won't need the fluid resizing or adjustable rounded corners that Rectangle objects offer; the trick will be remembering to perform this extra step.)
    THE BUG REPORT
Lastly, here's the bug report that I submitted to Adobe regarding this issue:
    Product name: Fireworks
    Product Version: 12.0.0.236
    Product Language: English
Your operating system: Mac OS 10.6.8
    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Rectangles within Symbols become blurry if the width or height of the symbol contents is an odd number (e.g., 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, etc.). The blurriness is caused by misalignment of Rectangles on the half-pixel within the symbol, and becomes apparent upon closing and reopening the document and either a) viewing the symbol's Document Library thumbnail preview, or b) clicking to view Symbol Properties or to Edit Symbol. It can also be observed upon Importing the symbol into the Document Library of another document.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
In an open FW document, draw a Rectangle and set the width and/or height to an odd number (e.g., 99 x 99 pixels).
Select the Rectangle and Convert to Symbol.
    Save and close the document.
Reopen the document. In the Document Library, double-click the symbol name to open the Symbol Properties dialog, and click OK. (Or double-click the symbol preview to Edit, and then return to the document canvas.)
Results: The Symbol instance appears blurry on the canvas. (The Symbol itself also appears blurry within Edit mode.)
Expected results: The Symbol should appear as it was originally created, without a loss of clarity or change in alignment.
Note that this bug can occur whether a rectangle's dimensions are even or odd; the determining factor is the dimensions of the symbol contents as a whole. However, the bug affects Rectangles only; it has not been observed with paths, ellipses, auto shapes, bitmaps, or groups.
The Transform panel extension was used to view the precise pixel alignment of objects and determine the cause of the blurriness.
For more information, including graphic demonstrations and workarounds, please see the following forum post: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1073489?tstart=0
This bug has also been observed in Fireworks 8 and CS5 on Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
    POSTSCRIPT
Amazingly, this bug can also affect Symbol instances on the canvas that have been "broken apart". To see this for yourself, create a symbol like one of the preceding examples, select the symbol instance on the canvas and choose Modify > Symbol > Break Apart. Save and close the file, then reopen it. The "broken apart" instance on the canvas will now appear blurry/misaligned(!).

    Thanks, Petros_!
That's good input. If this issue is important to you, consider submitting your own bug report. Feel free to copy and paste from mine, if it helps. (Just be sure to verify all results on your own setup first.)
Whenever possible, I'm trying to post bug reports on this forum in addition to submitting them to Adobe. Partially, this is to allow me to include graphics or go into slightly more detail, and partially it's to make bug reporting more transparent—to raise awareness of known issues among fellow users and reduce duplication of effort, to create a record, and to increase public visibility of these issues. It also allows for corrections or additions to be made by myself or other users.
However, it's not a true bug reporting system. So we don't know whether the Fireworks team has looked at this yet, whether it has been or will be assigned to someone, or whether your comment on this thread will be read by anyone on the Fireworks team.
Nevertheless, it is quite an investment of time tracking down a bug and writing it up like this, so I appreciate the kudos!

Everytime I bring in a photo be it an AI file, or jpeg or even tif that is much, larger than the 72 dpi .psd file I am working in, the image becomes blurry as I scale it down. Why is this and what then should I be doing to get my images crisp for a final file that will be used to slice out web assets during the build.
    Help please.

    Just some idle thoughts:
One good trick is to sharpen images a bit heavily at higher resolution, then downsample them (e.g., using Bicubic) to the final pixel dimensions, then maybe add just a touch more small radius Smart Sharpen.
Another consideration is that maybe you want to start thinking about publishing images at higher pixel dimensions and using HTML to downsize them.  This has the advantage of the images holding up well when browser zoom is used.  Consider what people do when they want to see something more clearly on an iPad, for example - they use a reverse pinch gesture to make it bigger temporarily.  It's more impressive if when one does that the image shows more detail.
Trying to have this stuff just happen automatically by dragging and dropping simply removes your fine control over how the image looks.

  • Using Lightroom 5.7, Raw files become from my Nikon D810 become corrupted when I select them to view or edit.

.Updated to Lightroom 5.7 to accommodate the Nikon D810. Upon importing RAW files to the files become corrupted when they are selected to be viewed or edited.
I am using Windows 7, 64 bit, with 8 GB Ram.
    Any help would be appreciated.

There are several likely sources of corruption, and video card would be far down on my list of possible suspects.
The transfer from camera card to hard disk is the most likely place for problem, either the card reader or USB cable can go bad. Another likely source of problems is the computer's hard disk is starting to fail. The camera card itself may be bad. And lastly, the memory in the computer may be malfunctioning.

  • Sharp Photo When Placed in Indesign, Text becomes Blurry...

I have a Photo (with Sharp Text) that when Placed in InDesign, the Text Becomes Blurry (as in Unreadable)...
What's Up with that? And, more Importantly, what can I do to Correct?  Thanks (can attach if needed)

Is this on screen or in print? Check Display Performance. Right-click on the image to change the display performance of only that image, or use the View menu to change the Display Performance of the document. Higher display quality generally slows the program down, although it can be slight. If the text is a text layer in Photoshop consider saving as Photoshop PDF. This will keep the file fully editable in Photoshop but the text will be vector paths in the PDF, rather then rendered raster art at the image's resolution.

  • Imported screen capture file looks blurry

Hi, I am re opening an old post, because I didnt find any answer.
The post is from 9'th of May 2008:
"I'm using a demo version of iShowU to record my computer screen. The resulting .mov file looks great! However, when imported into FCE and rendered, the quality is not nearly as good. It becomes blurry and the text is choppy.
I have tried several preset and a few custom settings in iShowU. Almost all of them produce a great looking movie when playing in Quicktime. But none of them look good in FCE 3.0. They look passable, but not as good as I had hoped.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Mike
I have the same problem, using the FCE 4.0. I am struggling with this for two weeks now and still couldnt find any solution. I would really appreciate if somebody could help me,
    thanks in advance,
    Michał

Thanks for Your answers, it were inspiring
I think I have the answer.
    1) You should use Animation codec, instead od dv pal or dv ntsc
do not scale it or resize if You plan to edit it
2)In FCE You MUST choose in the sequence preset, one of Apple Intermediate Codec. Using any dv preset, will cause blurring.
(I don't know how it works in FCP, any info will be greatly appreciated)
in FCE all apple intermediate (as HD ) are in 16:9 aspect ratio, i wonder how can I make screencast in 4:3?

  • Why does a 170 Kb file becomes a 3.5 Mb when I save it as theme?

I realized that when I save a file (170 Kb) as theme, its size increases dramatically (3.5Mb) (tried in keynote 09 ad 08 under OSX 10.6.7 or 10.5.8)
I realized that by doing "Save as" > Advanced Options > select "Save theme image into document", the saved file becomes a 3.5 Mb file as well.
Therefore, I suspect that the "save theme" does by default select this "Save theme image into document" option, hence the 3.5 Mb file size.
I tried this on several Macs and got the same result. However, all Macs are Macs I used at some points or where people installed my files / themes.
As a result, all files created from the theme I created are big fat babies of 3.5 Mb, which defeat the purpose of a theme to make it clean and lean.
Please advise if you have the same issue.
Saved custom themes can be found at [Home]/Library/Application Support/iWork/Keynote/Themes.
Suggestions welcome on what caused this oversized theme file size and how to reduce it?
    Thanks in advance

OK, problem solved. I was having this same issue & every presentation that I made from the new template was over 3.5MB, even if it contained only text. I now have it down to 229kB.
I used a plain black theme as my basis for a custom theme. I modified the fonts, layouts, etc, just as I wanted them. Then I saved as a template. The file size balloned to 3.5MB. The reason turns out that the default charts fot the black theme have woodgrain surface textures & these are being saved into the custom theme file (in a folder called "theme-files" within the custom theme package). So the solution is to remove all references to textured charts in the custom theme.
So... Get your custom theme ready & save it as a regular presentation somewhere for safe keeping. Now create a new chart on a new slide. (NB. A new regular slide, not a Master Slide.) For simplicity, choose the top-left-most chart type (column chart). Open the Inspector; go to the chart tab; select Chart Colors. In the new Chart Colors window, select 2D Color Fills & pick any colour. Click Apply All. Go to the menubar item Format --> Advanced --> Define Column Chart for All Masters. Click OK with the default option of "6".
Now, use the Inspector to change the chart to the next chart type along. Repeat the process above of changing the chart colours to a 2D colour fill, then applying this to all masters. Repeat, repeat, repeat for all chart types. I couldn't select a colour fill for some chart types, such as the line graphs.
Once you've defined all charts as using a 2D colour fill, there are no references to textures any longer. So, now delete the chart & its slide. Go to File --> Save Theme. Give it a name.
Now, check your custom theme file size in the Finder. Hopefully, it's come down in size now!

  • Can the prefs.js file become infected with malware?

I am trying to solve an issue with my computer and I have done scans with AdwCleaner. The scan results list my Firefox "prefs.js" files, both for my own user account and for the Guest account. IS there any chance of that file becoming infected with anything?
Probably not I suppose, a false positive perhaps?
That said, here is my issue in case anybody recognizes the symptoms and can help.
After a fresh boot my Internet is abnormally slow, down by 90%.
So far I have determined it is probably not hardware related not due to any background network activity.
This does not happen if I boot into Safe Mode, or even if I boot into the "Guest" user account.
I found a workaround: In device manager I "Disable" and then "Enable" the NIC (network adapter).
After my "fix", Internet connection speed immediately jumps back up to my full normal speed.
The speed slowdown never returns during that current session. It only returns after the next boot.
Back around the first of the year I did have a run-in with "Conduit" and eliminated it. A month ago I had a run-in with "Iminent" and eliminated that as well. There are, however, a number of orphaned Registry keys relating to the "Iminent" encounter but no software or toolbars associated with those keys.
Again, this problem only occurs after a fresh, full boot, only when booting to my own User Account, and is easily worked-around by re-enabling my NIC in device manager.
    Ring any bells?

Some extensions do store data in prefs.js.
Does your scanner indicate why it finds the file objectionable? Perhaps you can remove the problem material another way. For example, if you open the about:config preferences editor and look for any appearance of the word conduit and clear those out, maybe prefs.js will pass the next scan?
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) Use the search box above the list to filter down to preferences containing relevant terms. For example, you could type or paste '''conduit''' and pause while the list is filtered.
If there is a string-type preference you want to clear, you don't have to open it for editing and delete it. Instead, you can right-click > Reset it.

  • Design right alignings and scales down when viewed on ipad

    Hi,
I have a centered design web portfolio which works fine on all systems except Ipads. On an Ipad the home page right alighs and scales down when it should be centered. This only happenes on the home page, the other pages are cented and the correct size.

    Help is appreciated.

On the web, less is defintely more.
First main image is 1,009.38 KB (1,033,604 bytes) in file size.
Nobody wants to download a 1MB image if they don't need to.  Especially people on mobile devices who may be paying through the nose for bandwidth.
I would suggest limiting yourself to 6-9 thumbnail size images per page and optimizing them in PShop with Save for Web properties.   You'll need to sacrifice a bit on quality to keep file size to a minimum.  I like to keep thumbnails around 20KB and full size images under 100KB.
You could then deploy a modal window viewer like Fancybox to display larger images on click/touch.

  • Why do images become blurry after resizing in lightroom?

    Please help.
I do not know why the images are becoming blurry after resizing them in lightroom and exporting them?
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

What pixel dimensions are you resizing them down to and what quality setting and sharpening settings are you specifying in the Export panel?
