Is there a special plugin I can download to use AI files in motion?

Originally I found it on Adobe Exchange:

But unfortunately, the download link expired. A while ago it was availabe from a obscure russian website, but that link died too. I've tried to google it, but no luck.
I would love to share this file to everyone, but since I'm not the author of the script i don't know if I can do that. I'm sure it would help a lot of Motion users...

Any way to import multi-layered Illustator file into Motion?

I have an Illustrator map of Europe and i would like to bring it into Motion.
I know that Motion can import Illustrator files as pdf but is there any way to import a multi-layered illustrator file into Motion. I just saw this web site regarding a Motion plug-in that claims to do just this:

Without a dedicated plug or FxPlug, Motion has no inherent ability to parse Illustrator layers.
We just bust the layers out and save them as individual files. Or, of course, we use After Effects.

Applying filters to pdf files in Motion causes pixelization-why???

I have a mult-layered map of Europe made in Illustrator and all layers imported as separate pdf files in Motion 4. But when I apply any filters to the pdf files…they become severely pixelated…they look terrible.
How come this only happens with pdf files and not with any other format.
Can pdf files not handle effects of any kind in Motion?

Assuming you are scaling up your vector layers and you have fixed resolution turned off. Applying a filter rasterizes the layer before it gets transformed, i.e., scaled - that's the reason. The solution is to apply the filter to a group containing the layer so that it is scaled first, then the filter is applied.

.vpe files in motion? CS3 extended

I have seen an example of using vanishing point on a still image and using the .vpe files in motion projects to overlay animation in perspective to match the still image.My question is how do i import the data from photoshop into motion?

I dont' see any way to import .vpe into Motion; no way for Motion to understand it. According to the continued thread, I think the creator used the separate AE files, exported form AE, for each surface of the box in Motion.

Importing Photoshop layered files to Motion

I'm having issues importing Photoshop layered files to Motion. When the file appears in the viewer, text or the shapes in the Photoshop file have changed colors. It's almost like motion doesn't recognize a gradient color in the text or shape. I've tried rasterizing the layer but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

hopefully above fixed that! not to hijack, but group layer labels don't seem to imported properly into apple products. is this due to the apple-adobe wars? i am anal so all my photoshop layers are grouped with some organization, but in motion it looks like a mess. thx,

Importing MPEG1 files into Motion?!

Hi,
it seems that I can't import MPEG1 files into motion even if they play perfectly well in QT player, hence are perfectly supported by Quicktime. Any help on that?

They are played from QuickTime, but they are not an editable format. To convert it, try MPEG Streamclip to convert it to DV and use that...

Problem exporting file from motion 5

Hello,
I am trying to export a file from Motion 5 and whe I play the quicktime back, everything is jumbled and I can't read it. When I am working in Motion and scrubbing along through the file everything looks fine. Can someone please help me out?

For starters, what's the version number for Motion and What OS are you on? Are you up to date or using an older version? Next, what format are you exporting to (ProRes, H.265, etc.)? Finally does this happen with every project or just this particular one. Can you post a screen shot of what the problem looks like? There are a lot of possibilites to consider, the more info you can provide the better luck there will be in someone maybe helping you with a solution.

no there is not. The only thing you can do is to export the layers out of AE as movies and import them into Motion. Of course you are then hard baking everything and you lose control, but that would be the same if you went to any other system.

Vector file makes Motion crash

Hi there everyone. I have a question regarding vector files in motion. I have very small pdf file that I saved in Illustrator. I import it in to Motion 3 and turn off fixed resolution so I can see the sharp vector as it should be. Everything is fine until I go in to 3d mode and start to move the camera around. That's when I get the message "This media is too large to render at full resolution, and will be shown at a lower quality.The maximum size is 4096x4096". After that motion either crashes or everything slows down. Anybody know what is going on? If the pdf file is only 500k why should this cause any problems?

Is there a way to import .obj files into Motion so that motion can see the object as a 3D object?

I would like to import 3D objects with .obj file extensions into Motion. Is there a plug in or add on that allows you to do this? Is there any way of getting Motion to recognise 3D images? Other programs such as Adobe's After Effects (AE) achieves this easily and allows you to manipulate the image in 3D space.

Can no longer save files in Motion 2

I have been working on a project in Motion all week (2.1.2). Tonight I tried creating a new file, and I couldn't save it - no dialogue box appears at all. I opened up the file I've been working on all week, made a minor change to see if I could save that file, and I couldn't. Export is not working either. I have searched discussions to find an answer, but nothing has helped. I deleted the com.apple.motion.plist file, but that didn't work. I also tried reinstalling and am currently now on 2.1, hoping that it would help to not run the upgrade to 2.1.2, but it still won't save. I have a huge deadline coming up fast, and I don't know what to do! The only explanation I can come up with is the updates that I ran earlier today, which included the following:
Mac OS X 10.6.7
iDVD 7.1.1
Garageband 6.0.2
iWeb 3.0.3
Safari 5.0.4
iTunes 10.2.1
Digital camera raw..3.6
Java Update 4 1.0
Any suggestions??

the problem is likely related to the fact that you're running an extremely old version of Motion, and the most recent version of Mac OS. I'm surprised it'll run at all. Of the updates you listed that's the most likely culprit. See if you can revert.
On a separate note, if you are working with obsolete software (5 years is a lifetime in software terms), you have to be EXTREMELY careful about updating your working configuration in any way. There's nothing wrong working with outdated software. If it serves your needs and you don't have to upgrade (or can't spend the money), that's fine. But understand that as other programs like the OS are updated, their compatibility with older software becomes more and more unlikely.
The way to do it, is to find the configuration that works best, and then stop updating. Don't update until you HAVE to, and realize that it'll likely force you to update a lot of your programs.

Editing / changing images in a m4v file in Motion 5 - how do you do that?

My boss has given me a m4v file so I can adapt some of the images used. He used Motion 5 which I now have and chose a pre-set template but the 'layers' seem to go on top the video not change / edit the original file?

No, for sure:
a m4v is no Motion-project-file, containing all elements, groups and layers separately.
It's a 'consolidated', solid video, which indeed allows only to apply 'on top' changes. (or 'cuts')
If you want to edit the 'layers', you need the original project.motn file ..

EPS File and Motion

Hello, Can anyone tell me how to prep a EPS file for use in Motion and FCP. Ive tried with no success expoting from Photoshop and Illutrater. (Tiff and Jpeg)

I just played around a bit, and had actually really good results just importing files as .ai Illustrator files, not even EPS.
Otherwise the PDF as mentioned by Specialcase works as well.
An alternative I also thought of: you could import the eps into Photoshop and save out a large PNG file with transparency.
PNGs usually work great for what I need, but they of course do not have the flexibility of PDFs or AI files.

Files crashing Motion on MacBook Pro

I have been using a G5 for a while with great success - I recently got a MacBookPro to use as well, with motion. I have been working on some files that have been causing the MacBook to crash almost every time when using Motion - but the exact same files wil work on the G5 without ever causing a problem.
The files are saved on an external hard drive with a firewire 800 hook up. I just upgraded to Motion 3 and cannot understand why a file will work fine onthe G5 but not on the MacBook. I have 4 gb of ram on the MacBook and 150gb harddrive. But all the files & video clips are saved on the external hard drive.
I have tried to copy the files onto the Mackbook harddrive thinking it might be a combatibility issue with the harddrive but it still causes motion to crash. I have also reinstalled Motion but it has not made a difference at all.
If anyone could offer any suggestions that would be wonderful. I bought the Macbook specifically to use moiton and fcp and it does not seem to want to work at all. Thank-you

Which updates have you installed? If you have on of the newer MacBook Pros (2.2 or 2.4 GHz) they have a new video card that causes Motion 3 to crash. This problem was fixed with an update however.

Import layered ai files into motion and problem when export to psd

has anyone found a way to import rapidly ai files layered into motion?
I tryed to export from ai a psd file in layers but i am allowed to do it only in cmyk, and result is weird, all color changed. any help please?

Converting vector layer to shape when the vector layer contains a gradient is not supported. Gradients will come in as a gray fill. If you have more than one fill on a layer you will get both fills but you will loose the blend modes or any opacity masks on the fill. Basically you're stuck with solid color fills and solid color paths when you use Shape to Vector Layer.
Also, each illustrator path you want to turn into a shape must be on a separate layer. Multiple shapes on in the same layer will come in as a shape layer but the paths and fills will not be correct. AE will do it's best to figure out what you want but the chances for multiple paths filled with different colors in the same layer to be converted correctly is remote.
You can, however, add and modify as many gradient fills as you like to a shape layer in AE.
