AIC 1280 X 720 to MPEG-2 Looks like crud using imovie | buy compressor?

I am a complete newbie to the video editing and compression world. Please forgive me and thank you in advance for your advice.
Here is the low down. I am using Final Cut express. I edited a 4 hours training video with screenshots and some screen capture. This is training video on how to use some technical database software so the screen captures are movies of my computer screen captured with iShowU. My FCE sequence and screen capture video was recorded using Apple Intermediate Codec 1280 x 720. When I try to use imovie to burn the footage to a DVD everything looks very grainy. It looks like crud. When I export to Quicktime in the AIC format looks great.
Since I am a newbie, I know I probably should have recorded my screen captures in another codec and not 1280 x 720. Hindsight is 20/20.
I have noticed when I export from Final Cut Express to H.264 it even starts too look grainy. I really need to actually get in on several DVDs in the MPEG-2 format.
So my questions for you is:
Do you think this is something that Compressor will handle? Can I take 1280X720 AIC and use compressor to encode to MPEG-2 and not get grainy resolution? I think compressor can crop instead of scale which I think is what iMovie is doing when it encodes from AIC to MPEG-2. I was using the iMove professional encoding and even tested it with a 30 second clip and it looks like crud. I know compressor offers more fined grained control. I think the grainy MPEG-2 results are from iMovie trying to scale from 1280x720 to 720x480. (I think)
Or should I go back and create a new sequence and re-record all my screen captures in a better resolution that is DVD/MPEG-2 compatible.
I am not sure if this is a screw up in my choice of capture resolution or if it is a limitation of imovie. I am just hesitant to drop the coin on FCP if this is not going to work. Thanks again

No, I don't think Compressor can handle it. MPEG-2 is too heavily compressed to handle compressing screen captures. It's always going to look awful. The limitation is in the DVD format and MPEG-2. Most training DVDs for software are not made using MPEG-2, but using computer formats with a runtime player for playback on a computer monitor not a TV set.

    No.
I'm sorry, but Apple does not provide a downgrade path for iOS. Because downgrading is unsupported by Apple we cannot discuss it on these forums.

  • My mpeg-4 looks like crap

i was uploading to vimeo, exporting from a final cut pro hd 4.5 file using quicktime 7.6.6 conversion, here's the link to the settings i used:

any advice would be much appreciated!

any advice would be much appreciated!
How about posting a link to the QT v7.6.6 output file so we can see what the actual quality of your source content looked like and what results were actually achieved using your targeted settings.

  • Even My SD project looks like crud! Jittery, Echoy, Pixelated etc.

    Sorry for my spelling.
Please help guys! I have figured out my HD to SD issues, so I thought it would be a breeze going just SD all the way. Now to help you understand, I originally edited these files in Premier pro, and then sent them over to FCP and made them into files that DVDSP could read. I burned them to DVD and they looks as though I tried to make them from SD to HD files which looks like crap of course.
Now I've done this a few times before and (going from Premier to FCP and such) and they looked just fine. I can't figure out what is the problem.
Here is an example of the file format:
    vid Rate 29.97 fps
    frame size 720 x 480
    compressor dv/dvcpro - ntsc
pixel aspect ntsc - ccr 601
I will give more info if needed but I'm not sure what the heck to give since I am clueless to begin with
any help would be great and as usual, thank you for your time and patience with me.

    Hi
    Just as a test.
If Your movie is OK in FinalCut Pro.
    • Export out as QuickTime .mov
    • Not selfcontained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME Conversion (Important)
    Close FCP
    Open iDVD
Import Your QT.mov here and select Pro Quality
Make a DiskImage (File menu and down)
Play this with Apple DVD-player tool. OK ?
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R SL disks
    • Set burn speed to x4 in iDVD pref
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk
Now - How does this play - Quality OK ?

  • HELP! Hard Drive Failure - Looks like I may be buying a new internal

    BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP Right?!
I was listening in on the Typical Mac User Live Podcast. Very strange that after I left the chat, I worked a bit on graphics and product images for my CafePress shop. Then all of a sudden my Mac G5 PPC starts acting very slow. After every thing I did I got the beach ball and it would take a considerable amount of time before it caught up. I force shut down a couple times. Then I zapped PRAM (no change). Keep in mind that I have not had any problems like this with my G5. I DID replace the SuperDrive early on. I bought a second internal from Apple. Thank God I recently purchased a couple external Hard Drives for backup.
I rebooted holding down the ALT key. I chose my backup hard drive to boot up. Then I tried using disk utilities to repair the main disk. It failed 3 times per Disk Utility. I am currently running Tech Tool Deluxe (8-5-07 11:05 CST). It has found 4 errors so far. Here is the Disk Utility Log:

So now, I assume I need a new hard drive. I have 2 LaCie externals. 1 is Firewire and 1 is USB. I have a second internal Maxtor HD. I use my second internal to store work, iPhoto Lib, iTunes Lib and movies, etc. The two externals are just backups.
I am currenlty running on my backup ext. HD. Any suggestions or help would be GREATLY appreciated.

You can always cut and edit a log and just give a summary or snapshot.
Lots of threads on suggestions for new and replacement drives.
I would focus on 500GB and either Hitachi or WD.
At some point I would add external SATA as well (PCI-X plus a dual drive at the least).
    Zeroing drives is always handy.
I think Disk Warrior does the best job with problems such as yours.
Or upgrade to TechTool Pro 4.5.3.
Intech Speedtools can map out bad blocks without a destructive format and zero-all.
And always have two backups, and an emergency boot drive. Sometimes it is helpful to keep a month old set or the last OS revision (10.4.9 etc).

  • Plugging Macbook Pro i7 into external displays looks like crap.

I have a rather confusing problem with my Macbook Pro. I went out and bought a Samsung 27" display. I am running a generic no-name adapter from the mini port to a HDMI plug into the display. The quality was AWFUL- as in basically unusable. I returned the monitor and came back a few weeks later with the laptop to the store. I spent about an hour plugging the laptop into various monitors throughout the store. Almost all of the monitors- including smaller 24" monitors- looked like crud also except for the upper end models from HP and of course- the $1,000 model from Apple. I wound up buying a 27" HP 2710m monitor. It looked "ok" in the store. I work as a graphic designer so I'm very picky about details. Upon opening a Photoshop doc I could see that things like gradients, shadows, and text all looked funky and wrong. Thus again- the monitor I bought looks like #$@!.
What's weird is that if I take a look at the display settings when its not plugged into a monitor there is a huge amount to choose from. When its plugged into any monitor I've tried- except of course the super expensive Apple display- about half of those setting become unavailble and I'm basically stuck with using what appears to be TV settings ( 1080P) and so on.
I tested the new monitor on a Mac Tower and it seems to do fine. But then again- it looks like crud with the Laptop. The Mac tower uses non-apple 24" displays and they look great. I even plugged the laptop into one of these 24" displays currently used for the tower and again- SAME thing!
So basically I've got a $2,000 laptop that appears to ONLY work with an Apple monitor. Is there something stupid I'm simply not getting here or what? I realize those apple displays are a much higher pixel density, but still- the generic 24" displays work with the Mac tower but NOT with the laptop.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you have an i7, it can't be running 10.5.4 reliably. At minimum it can run 10.6.3. So that might be part of the problem if you managed to to load an older operating system on the Mac than the Mac itself can handle. Your My Settings or posted OS link has 10.5.4, even though you are using an i7. If you meant to select 10.6.4, pardon me.
Generic adapters are usually not as reliable as quality adapters, but also if you have 1080p display, I recommend checking your progressive setting under Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays Options.
I'm assuming you tried the same cables on the desktop as the notebook. If you don't have a mini-Displayport connection on the desktop to test with, you can't rule out the cables.
http://www.macsales.com/ offers several adapters you can use with your notebook for HDMI. You might want to check with them, or find a non-generic adapter.

  • Settings for a 1280 x 720 video (720p) that doesn't look like garbage?

I've been toying around for a while, but I can't seem to find a decent method to render my 1280x720 video that doesn't look like crap.
I've switched between several video types (mainly avi and mov), but I can't find a suitable method.
I am a total noob to this stuff and though I'd prefer to use a .mov or .avi file (since any PC can pretty much play them), I need some good setting to output a quality video.
All of this stuff about bitrate/pixel type/etc, I just have no idea what I'm doing.
    I appreciate any advice.

You will also find links to many free tutorials in the PremiereProPedia that will quickly show you how things are done in Premiere Pro.

  • 1280 X 720 29.97 FPS Setup

    Greeting,
I'm starting up Premier Pro CS6 and I get this huge selection of formats I could setup for everything but what I "think" I need.
    What I Need
Final output will be to YouTube but I want to set the file up for full res and then render from that. I've been told to set up a file at 1280 X 720 @ 29.97fps and I should be able to get what ever I need from that but I don't see it as a preset in the first window that opens in Premier. I see things that are close but there doesn't appear to be a way to edit them and save.

Hey thanks for the quick reply.
Actually, I don't have any source footage yet. Most of it will be still photos with some video from a stock house of which I will look for something that is at the size I'm after. So I guess that means my editing sequence will need to be 1280 X 720 @ 29.97fps. I suppose if the stock footage is only available at 30fps when I import it my project will ask if I want to adjust to the import settings. Do I just ignore the New Seqence preset window. Sorry I'm a neophyte at PR.
    Saving Preset
You mention I can export this setup. I'm assuming there is an export preset dialog somewhere that will ask me what to call it? yes? Or will it give me options like "YT .264"?
Also, what does the YT stand for? I've seen the .264.

  • Running Final Cut Pro on 1280 X 720, 60 Hz, Millions

I just updated to Final Cut Pro Suite 2 but Final Cut Pro, Compressor, & DVD Studio Pro wont open with my display selected to 1280 X 720, 60 Hz, Millions. It demands that I have it set to 1024 X 768, 75 Hz, Millions, which looks like trash.
    Anyone tips?

Final Cut won't run if the display is fewer than 1024 pixels wide, or 768 pixels tall. Either one will trigger the minimum-size error message.
What the **** kind of display do you have that won't draw at least 768 lines?

  • New 27" iMac won't display above 1280 x 720

I just got my new 27" iMac but the max display size is 1280 x 720.
I went for the higher-end NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M. On first startup the screen is full of static and then is drops into the 1280 x 720. I tried zapping the PRAM but the same static problem happens.
I'm trying to get in touch with support but the support page is giving me error messages.

I restarted my system this morning, and the correct display rersolution is currently working.  No update was installed this morning.  I had the system up and running overnight setting up iTunes Match.  Can't explain it, but we are fully up and running now.  I am going to do some more testing with it and send an email to my support rep with this screen shot.  WOOT.  Display finally looks as amazing as I was promised.  Also did a Graphics Benchmark last night, and got results:
    FPS:
    100.8
    Score:
    2539
    Min FPS:
    45.3
    Max FPS:
    198.2
Which blew my 2 windows desktop machines with NVIDIA Desktop Graphics cards out of the water.  Now I can play with photos!

  • Combine 720 x 480 & 1280 x 720 on Blu Ray - best settings?

What is the best way to combine mutliple formats on a Blu Ray disk. I need to dsplay SD & HD video (720 x 480 & 1280 x 720) clips on the same disk. I have both formats on separate sequences in Premiere Pro and Encore. The sequences are set up corresponding to there respective specs. When I burn a disk evrything goes fine but the playback of the SD is inferior to a standard DVD. If I just burn the SD sequence to a Blu Ray disk, without the HD sequence then the playback quality is better.
I realize that displaying SD in HD shows all the flaws but this is definitly not good quality, lots of artifacts in flat tonal areas with motion.
Anyone have any good ideas for tweaking the transcode settings for the SD sequence , etc?

One way you can be certain that encodings of the SD material are up to snuff
    Blue_Devil1 wrote:
Why don't you scale down the 1280x720 to SD.  Hopefully, your SD footage is widescreen and you could make the 1280 widescreen as well (exporting from Ame) and burn a widescreen DVD in ENcore.
Then play the disc in an up converting DVD player.
    John Rich
Sorry John, but downscaling HD to SD to play in an upscaled SD player makes little if any sense to me.
@the OP - are your problems from a burned disc, and if so what is your player and firmware revision?
BD should be able to handle mixed resolutions with no trouble at all, but you need to be careful.
Not all players can handle the switch between HD & Sd very well - we had this issue on a commercial title recently where the extras were all 720 x 480 SD against the main title of 1920 x 1080/24 - certain players connected via HDMI had definite issues switching between resolutions.
One way you can be sure your SD footage is up to par would be to encode all these assets to MPEG-2 before importing them into Encore project.
This way you can proof them all before importing - set the files to "Do not transcode" in Encore, and from then on all issues with quality are down to the player.

  • Using 1280 x 720 HD video in a NTSC DV FCP project

Ok - My company is putting together a marching band DVD for a school. The footage has been shot by different volunteer parents with different recording formats on their cameras. Our job is to combine the footage into a multicamera shoot and put the whole finished product on a SD DVD.
A Majority of the footage we received is in standard def: 720 x 480. 29.97 DV NTSC
However, the wideshot footage is in the following HD format: 1280 x 720. 30 FPS H.264. It is a .mov file
    So...
We created a sequence to match the SD format, rendered the wideshot footage to match that sequence and edited everything together.
We then exported using compressor with the traditional SD setting and burned the disc via DVD studio pro.
When we watch the footage on any TV (SD or HD), everything looks fine except for the wideshots (HD footage). There is a "trippy" or "robotic" look to any movement that occurs in these shots.
What have we done wrong? Is it related to the 30fps vs 29.97 FPS? I thought FCPs rendering automatically converts / fixes this.
What can be done to fix this problem?

The DV was interlaced, the HD is prgressive. That's one issue. You didn't see the motion artifacts on your computer because that's a progressiuve display. The MPEG2 DVD is interlaced.
Solving it? Hmm, I'll let some others try to make useful suggestions. Gotta go back to work myself.

  • Why is 960 x 720 really 1280 x 720???

Really confused at this second. I shot on the HVX200, 720P... which frame size is 960 x 720... but then why when you output or look at the actual file it states that its size is 1280 x 720?
    Anyone?

If you'd read the Terms of use, you would realize this is a site for supporting/problem solving technical issues with FCP. It is not intended to offer instruction in video 101.
Lyndia.com and ken stone's site offer a number of tutorials and other support mechanisms that you may find enlightening.
    Good luck.

fwiw - anamorphic originally refered to lenses that compressed the image horizontally but not vertically so that there was a non-linear relationship between the image in real life and what was recorded on film. The film had a 4:3 aspect ratio but, by using a lens that compressed the horizontal when recording and using the reciprocal lens when projecting, one could record and play back much wider aspect ratios.
What is relevant about that bit of history is that anamorphic has come to mean the recording of pixels that are wider than they are tall, with the result the 960 horizontal resolution pixels take up a 1280 space. Of course, you know video has always used a non-square pixel. In terms of Standard definition, it has been narrower than tall, eg DV SD is 720x480, which has a square pixel equivalent of 640x480 (a 4:3 ratio). Anamorphic 16:9 means the pixels are wider than tall. The specific width varies with the codec. It is a way to save bandwidth and to get more out of a limited format.
