AIFF & AppleLossLess

Hi,
Is AIFF better then Apple Lossless in sound quality?
If I transfr AIFF to iTunes Plus, is it better in sound quality then transfer to iTunes Plus from Apple Lossless?
Thanks.

JhnD wrote:
So AIFF is CD quality, and Apple Lossless is only near CD quality?
No. They are both sonically equivalent to a CD-quality source. Apple Lossless files are about half the size however, since they are created using lossless compression.
I'm planning to rip my songs to "AIFF or Apple Lossless" and then transfer them to 192kbps so I can load to my touch and have a copy of CD quality on my hard drive.
That is fine. Just be aware that iTunes has no particular tools to make it easy to manage two versions of each song. You can create the two versions; you can choose to manage them either as separate playlists or separate libraries; and when you add a new song you will have to manually do the same.
So which do you suggest: AIFF --> 192kbps
or Apple Lossless --> 192kbps
Those two would produce AAC files of equivalent quality.

I'm about to convert my iTunes library from AIFF to Apple Lossless.

  • What is the point of ripping music in applelossless

I am a new Mac user and an iTunes user. I am trying to use iTunes as a juke box to distribute music to stereo. initial thought was to re-rip all cd's in apple lossless. But when I play back the ones I have re-ripped in lossless, I notice they only play at 256kbs. So my question: why bother ripping in applelossless? Thanks

    Stereo CD (44.1kHz/16-bit) are 1441 kb/s
Apple Lossless will give you a reduction in bit-rate but not in quality. Typically you could maybe expect to reduce the size of your files by 30%. I wouldn't really consider using it for a few reasons. If you want to share your files you would be just as well leaving it in 16-bit/44.1kHz. If you want to listen on a portable music player you will almost certainly be unable to notice much difference between an Apple Lossless file and Variable Bit Rate MP3.
I'm not sure what Apple meant by the 256 kb/s limit. If you turn on the bitrate column in iTunes you can see the average bitrates of all your tracks and I have AIFFs, WAVs, Apple Lossless and MP3s which are over 256kb/s in my library.

  • 3rd Party AIFF loops tempo changes from loop library and Logic session

    Hi there,
Hope somebody out there can help me out!
I've recently purchased some 3rd party loops, some in AIFF and some in WAV (Which I have converted to AIFF using the Apple Loops Utility), and i have been able to get these into the logic Loop library successfully.....Or so I thought!
The problem I am having is that when previewing one of my loops it's often double the speed that the set tempo, and this will happen to ALL of my loops. But when I drag one into my session, Logic asks if it should copy over the automation data with it, click yes, and it plays fine in the arrange window. And funnily enough, all of my loops in the library start playing at the correct tempo!
Once this has all happened, i've tried quitting logic, and re-opening....but the issue just happens again....
Has anyone else had this problem, or have any idea as to what the issue may be??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Garage Band is recognizing ".aif" format loops but not ".aiff" format loops

All of the ".aif"-formatted loops (from Jam Packs, etc.) are showing up fine in the Loop Browser, but other loops I bought from third-party vendors that are in the ".aiff" format are not showing up at all in the loop browser. They are all in the same correct folder for loops on my system along with the working Jam Pack loops. I tried dragging and dropping a bunch of these loops onto the blank space on an open session based on some advice I read on the internet, and Garage Band processed them (and created new instrument tracks on the screen for each loop) but they did not subsequently show up in the loop browser as I had hoped. Do I need to reformat these to ".aif" somehow? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Just to follow up, draggging the loop folders into the loop browser didn't work exactly on its own, but I got it to work in the following manner. First I went to the finder and deleted the apple loop indexes in each of the two locations where apple loops are stored in my computer (note to Apple: why multiple different folders for Apple Loops?). Then I dragged all of the Apple Loops that were stored in the second loops folder (in the Library under "Audio") to the first Apple Loops folder. Then I dragged both entire Apple Loops folders (required even though the second one was now empty) into the loop browser. Upon dragging the second one in, Garage Band automatically began reindexing my loops and then everything showed up in the loop browser correctly, finally. Apparently both (or all) locations where Garage Band stores loops must be individually dragged into the loop browser to trigger the reindexing process. This process was harder than it should be and I feel like it represents an annoying bug in Garage Band, in addition to the help from this post I also had to google research the problem for quite some time to figure out this process.

  • Fake aiff and real aiff from wav ?

    1) When in garageband if I just batch convert an entire folder of wav to aiff with Apple loop utility even if all the wav loops have different tempo and key all will have one meta data or information which will not hold true for all loops.....so isnt there a way later once its in GB loops to detect the real tempo of an aiff file in garageband and edit its tag and metadata from within.....?
    2) It would be bliss if all the wav loops I have get converted to real aiff with correct key and tempo but does that mean it will have to be done one by one if all loops have different properties ....there is no other shortcut....?
    3) can a loop in GB be opened in Apple loops utility from right clicking or something else like it does in logic....?

Thanks Edgar ,in response to your 2nd answer..........
but if I don't assign the tempo of every wav and save it as Aiff just with some tags ,I have noticed the tempo and pitch of the beat goes haywire according to the project tempo when played in the browser as it is set to some incorrect tempo metadata
    1) I have a question... if we don't put key and tempo information in a loop what is the use of having an aiff loop..because it won't match any tempo or pitch in GB timeline ?..why not simply work with wav files.....or is it so that no matter if the tempo and pitch information is not filled in Apple loop utility any aiff loop created will automatically detect it and fit your loop according to project setting in GB ? which although didn't happen with me....loops went haywire,if I didn't pay attention to their real tempo and key in Apple loop utility.
    2) the BPM slider and key box at the bottom of the Apple loop utility if set incorrectly or not according to the bpm automatically listed in 'info about the loop'.......changes the tempo and pitch of the wav saved as aiff......so isn't it a big concern to list tempo and pitch of evey wav.....?

  • Why does GB screw with my recorded AIFFs?

So, after all this time, I finally decide to see what that little guitar icon on my dock does. Because my mini has no audio input, I devise an elaborate way to record my guitar - I record it using a mic plugged into a handycam, hooked up to final cut via firewire. So far so good. I set GB up to give me a nice click track at the right tempo, through my headphones, then do my thang. I then export the resulting track as an AIFF file. It sounds good (well, as good as I ever sound, anyway)
    Here's the problem.
Having set up a GB song with the correct tempo and key, I then import the AIFF file I just made. But what's this? My clip is now in a new key (I know this because I try to play along and can't), and the tempo has changed (ditto). And, of course, none of the loops work with it, becuase my clip is now in a different key, with a different tempo. How can I make GB accept my little file just as it is?

  • Apple loops in .AIFF ?

    Hi !
Ok, me and my friend, we were having fun, jammin with logic pro 8 , and then suprisingly, I realized that I couldn't edite destructively apple loops. I learned that it was because of the .caf extention, and that compressed audio file cannot be edited destructively, then that I have to bounce then, convert them in .wav or aiff, etc ...
But the subject of this topic is something else :
My friend actually could edit the apple loops without convert them.
So we just checked his apple loops folder (in is HD, not his user home), and we were really suprised to find all the apple loops in ... .AIFF format !
so our question is : how do you think it happend ? because my friend has no idea how come his apple loops are in .aiff
    Is it normal ?
is there a precess to do that.
It seems that it's more convenient to have the apple loops in .aiff
Is there any problem that we didn't see yet about that ?
    thanks guys

Logic 7 and Garageband apple loops, prior to iLife 08, all used .aif files. so most likely your friend already had those jam packs installed before upgrading to Logic 8

  • Garageband erased all aiff files of recordings made!!!

    Hi there,
I spent a few hours on garageband simply recording some audio over the internal mic. Some of it I recorded normally, some in loop mode. Then I edited it, cut out what I didn't want and also deleted whole tracks with some audio on it. After all the editing I had around 6 tracks with mainly short audio loops in it (made from these recordings earlier on).
I then saved the project. Then quit. Then put my computer to sleep.
3 minutes later I woke it up again, opened the same file in Garageband I'd previously been working on. Then all I got were error messages telling me one after the other, that all the aiff-files from the various recordings could not be found. I tried the "search" button, but that never found anything.
I opened the file and all my loops were there in form, but the audio was not there, i.e. couldn't play any of it.
I opened the package contents of the GB file and the media folder was empty. The file's size is 1.1MB.
This seems to be a huge bug. This has never happened to me before. It was the first time using Garageband on Snow Leopard. And possibly the first time using Garageband 09 at all (I've used older versions frequently).
Has noone else had this happen? It makes me nervous ****. I'd have to save, quit and reopen all the time to make sure the audio data is still there.
    Looking forward to your comments.
    JAD

    Hey there Alphaspin,
Sorry to hear you had the same thing happen to you.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME I'm very happy to see someone confirm my problem. It's a first step on the way to freeing that poor little bug from GB, I'm assuming. (you hear that, Apple? Don't be too vicious with the poor thing. It's not its fault!)
As a note to various people above who were hypothesizing my failure to save the file properly.
I understand your scepticism, but think about this. If I hadn't saved the file properly (before quitting - as I remember well - or during the quitting process), why would all the loops still be shown in my tracks in the Garageband file? I don't see how that could possibly happen if the file wasn't in some way "saved".
What I see in the file I referenced in my first post, is everything exactly in the state I left it when I quit it, except for all the loops not playing because GB can't find the original aiff files in it's project file any more (because they've apparently been deleted during the quitting process).
Anyhow, I hope more people will find this post and confirm our experiences. Probably they won't find it before the ** hits the fan, unfortunately. It's all a learning experience as always. Just in this case backing up doesn't help diddly-squat. You can seemingly save it to as many HDs as you wish - if GB deletes the aiff files in the project, they're lost in multiple places at once
morale of the story: I will not use GB until I see this addressed and fixed and I can test it with some post-modern classical junk music. (because I don't feel like going back to leopard - which might fix the problem for the moment).

  • Help! Need to convert my songs prom AIFF to MP3

I'm trying to share songs I've created with Garage band. For some reason they are way too large (40 - 60MB) to attach to an email and send. They shouldn't be that big, they are just average sized songs. Thats the size that they each came out when I exported it from garage band to itunes. A friend recomended a program Audacity to reduce their size (or bitrate?) but I haven't a clue as to how to use it to make my songs normal size. Is there some simple way to reduce their size so that I can send them to people?
(Someone already recomended the "never-fail" method but that method requires one to convert file in the "import preferences" but I have nothing called "import preferences on either itunes or garageband.)
As you can see I know very little about this stuff but I really need to send these songs out, any bit of help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou, Marc.

    Marc,
Here are the steps to convert it from aiff to mp3 (This is iTunes version 6):
    1. In GarageBand, Export your Song to iTunes. (This will create the AIFF mixdown)
    2. In iTunes, go to the iTunes Preferences.
    3. Click on the Advanced button along the top of the Preferences window.
    4. You should see three options: General, Importing, and Burning. Click on Importing.
    5. There should be a dropdown menu that says "Import Using:" Select MP3 encoder from this list.
    6. Click OK
    7. Go back into your iTunes Library and highlight the AIFF file that you imported from GarageBand.
    8. From the Advanced menu, select Convert Selection to MP3.
    9. Now you have an MP3 file of your GarageBand song that should be able to be emailed and shared.
Let me know if everything works.

  • How can I tell if an audio clip is .m4a or .aiff?

I have some audio clips in a song that I dragged/dropped a few weeks ago and I cannot remember if they were rendered as m4a or aiff. I tried clicking on the clip itself but I see no option for "get info" or anything like that. I also tried using the finder which does tell you, but unfortunately I used the same title about ten other times so that won't work in this case.

    Did you try my suggestion?
    WH
Yes, and it presents the same dilemma as the finder option since I have multiple files with the exact same title. Example: My song has an audio clip titled "Leah" because that is the name of the girl I recorded on that track. Unfortunately I used that title six different times. So if I use Finder or your suggestion, I type in "Leah", and it gives me all 5 files, all the exact same music and duration and I have no idea which one is the one being used in my song. The only way to know for sure is to do this from within GB, and I cannot believe there isn't an option for this. Thanks for offering to help though.

  • HELP!-I NEED A LOUDER AIFF!

are there any programs that boost the master volume of an AIFF file?
i've finished an album i've been working on in my bedroom with garageband and my blue snowball microphone. i've mastered it so none of the tracks "clip" and go into the red during the loud parts...when i export the songs to itunes it's significantly quieter than other recorded music.
i don't know how to make the AIFF file as loud as normal recorded music. here's what a tried though:
i cranked the master volume in the garageband file. almost the whole time it's "clipping" and in the red, but when i export that to itunes nothing sounds distorted or different at all to me. what is it suppoed to sound like when it's "clipping"?
i'm sending the full album to a CD duplication company to make 1000 copies...i'm wondering if the AIFF files that have been cranked up and sound great (even though it shows constant "clipping" in the garageband file) will sound distorted and low quality in the 1000 copied cds.

What you've done is not Mastering. search the web for "Mixing and Mastering", it is a rather complex topic (books are written on Mastering alone), but getting some background may help.

I don't know if it's the best description, but I guess kind of crackling.
As a sidenote, I worked with a guitarist who, even when the horribly clipped sections were pointed out, could not hear the problem.

  • Can you use iTunes match and not get duplicates if you maintain mp3s and aiffs files of the same song in either the same or separate libraries?

I maintain a collection of aiff files and mp3 files of the same music.
Aiff for home listening and Mp3 for my devices.
I can arrange these in the same or seperate libraires.
Will "itunes match" duplicate the songs in the cloud if they in the same or seperate libraies on the same mac?
If not, is anyone aware of how to manage seperate Mp3 and Aiff libraries so as not to get duplicates in itune match?
    All assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hello mracole,
I checked my "purchases" and the 7/19/13 purchases don't show up.  However, the earlier versions from usually several years back...the ones that are Matched...often do show up in my Purchases.  I suspect that somehow those REALLY purchased several year old versions were deleted and redownloaded by me so I could change them to the 256 kbps versions under iTunes Match.  They were probably 128 kbps versions originally when purchased.
Why the earlier versions that were really purchased are now identified as Matched is puzzling.
Why I now have Purchased versions from 7/19/13 is puzzling too...especially since these versions do NOT show up in my purchases.
Calling Apple Support if a good idea unless someone can explain this mystery.  I might even take one of my laptops to the Apple store and show a Genius.
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond, Mr. Luigi

  • How can I extract only the audio as an aiff file?

Using a Sony DSC-N2 Cybershot Camera I recorded video that was saved as “MOV01606.MPG”. The video plays back with sound in Quicktime Pro and iTunes but how can I extract only the audio as an aiff file?

Use MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert your .mpg files to QuickTime formats.
QuickTime can't extract audio from muxed file formats.

  • Using compressor DVD Studio Pro 4 will only accept ac3 format in the burn process. ac3 makes a nnsense of the good sound delivered, 30% reduction in volume, auto volume levelling giving unwanted volume variations. Used to be able to burn using AIFF/WAVE,

AS Above. Edited in FCPX. Excellent sound file. Using Compressor 4 to DVD Studio 4. Wanting AIFF or WAVE sound for acurate sound.
Previously DVD Studio 4 has accepted AIFF etc and delivered sound as reuired. Now, during the burn process everything other than ac3 is declined as 'video bit rate too high', but will burn if the AIFF format is replaced with ac3 (which I presume meanss the 'video bit rate too high' is referring to the sound file)
The issue with ac3 format is the huge reduction in original volume and worse, the 'auto volume levelling' that makes a nonsense of the original soundtrack - with simply aweful unwanted variations in volume Throughout the  the dvd.
I have tried everything I can think of to get around this. The 'volume gain' in compressor doesn't make any difference. Exporting just AIFF and the Video to DVD 4 doesn't make any difference, it always declines anything but the aweful sound ac3 delivers.
I have customers awaiting a musci DVD, not with thei quality I can't.
    Cheers
    Phil

The total video bit rate is determined by audio & video. Depending on what rate your video file was encoded at will determine how much room is left for audio. PCM(aiff/wav) audio requires a bigger piece of the pie. Video bit rate too high means your overall(video+audio) rate is going above 9Mbps which the format won't allow. The only way to use aiff would be to lower your video file's data rate. The length of your program is also a factor in all of this.
I had some problems in the past with using aiff instead ac3. Although there shouldn't be any issue I experienced playback issues on some players that couldn't be explained but were cleared up by ac3.  I have been using the same specs as Dave's suggestion for almost nine years and have not had any issues with mix, quality, or levels.
