Aiff (Music CD) files only play in Quicktime

I purchased a CD at a concert last night (this guy is not signed, not on iTunes so he's making his own CD's I think)
It played fine on the CD player in the car,
but this morning, I stuck it in my Macbook Pro. (10.6.8)  The files show up as .aiff but it wouldn't copy (I tried to copy to a folder on the desktop first, said error 36), so I imported it into iTunes and it just skips right through them...won't play anything.
I CAN play it in Quicktime, but that's inconvenient and I can't load into my phone/iPod...
I tried converting in iTunes via changing the preferences/general/import settings to mp3 and then doing the Create mp3 file, but it created empty (4kb) files...
I also tried converting in Quicktime by doing "save as" which came out as an m4v file, but it barely starts to play, then it's empty.
I need a simple way to convert these files...I'm not a computer whiz by any means...
HELP!!
Thanks
Isabel

And also, I tried running it through Audacity-someone said that there are different kinds of aiff files and iTunes only accepts 16 bit...Didn't work.
Did it play in Audacity? If so, and IIRC, you can convert it there to MP3 or something else. I'd give that a try.

It all depends on the codec the file uses, Karli.
What model of camcorder is this video coming from?
Are you working on a Mac or a PC? Have you got the latest version of Quicktime, per the program requirements? When you started your project, did you select the settings for a DSLR at 720p? This is a vital step since it will activate the components your computer will need to work with many of these types of files.
    BY THE WAY, KARLI--

  • .avi files only play sound after update

I have a few .avi videos that used to play both audio and video before the 7.13 update yesterday, and now these .avi files only play audio, and the video is non-existant.
I re-installed my DivX codecs, and I'm not sure what to do next.

I am having the same problem.
Does anybody have a resolution to this issue?

  • Files only play audio

I formatted an external drive for FAT32. I dumped Quicktime files from my MAC onto the drive. I plugged the drive into a Windows computer. The only thing that seems to play is audio from the Quicktime clips. Am I doing something wrong? How can I play the Quicktime clips on my PC?

That's the problem. AIC isn't a part of the normal QuickTime distribution. It comes with Final Cut and iMovie and, unless there's a version I've never found, isn't available for Windows. You'll probably need to transcode the movies into another format such as h.264 to play them on a Windows system.

  • Embedded video files only play audio

The newest version of Keynote (v. 4) in iWork '08 will only play the audio portion of video files I add to it. The first frame of the video shows in the navigator panel, and the files show up and are viewable in the media browser. The selection handles for the video files are visible but that's all. This version also doesn't show the video content created in previous versions of keynote. In version 3 files I'd had .avi and .mov files that worked fine. I've checked the quicktime settings in system preferences to make sure that they were set properly. Suggestions?

After posting the original question about the newest version of Keynote (v. 4) in iWork '08 only playing the audio portion of video files I add to it, I tried every possible fix.
Since I'd been using a newer PCI video card recently, I tried just hooking up the monitor to the AGP video card that was still installed and it solved the problem.
If anyone is considering using Keynote v.4, make sure that you have either an AGP or PCI express slot for the graphics card you use since a regular PCI graphics card won't support video or animation files you add to Keynote.

  • Some of my video files only play for a five second duration in QuicktimeX.

A few video files I have only play the clip for five seconds, but when I play the same exact clips in VLC they work, it is only 3 or 4 video files, but it is a problem, also when you see the little video icon, you see the video, for the ones that only play for five seconds, you see blotches, and a grey picture. Is there any way to fix this problem? The file format is in .avi

When trying to play open the inspector (CMD + I) and mention what the codecs are.

  • Music player will only play audio on Music Videos

I agree. On the iPhone (4) with iOS5 in the Video player you have a all your Movies, TV Shows, Music Videos and Podcasts that can be played individually, with no Shuffle option. If you use the Music Player you can you have all your music and you can Shuffle a Playlist, you can Shuffle an Artists, you can Shuffle an Album and you can Shuffle by Podcast album. Since the Music Player plays videos correctly this would seem to be the correct solution: use Music player instead of Video player.
Like the iPhone, on the iPad (1G) with iOS5 the Video player doesn't Shuffle, each video (Movie, TV Show, Music Video and Podcast) must be played individually. However, on the iPad, the Music player DOESN'T play Music Videos correctly (it tries, but repeated selecting the video image to bring the video to fore actually causes the Music player to crash). It plays the audio only and provides on a preview size snapshot from the video. So while you can start playing one video and selecting the Shuffle button on the right side of the Track Status and the song will play and will Shuffle when done, there is no actual VIDEO playing. Clearly the application is broken.

Actually there is no legit way at all to downgrade.

  • IMORTED AUDIO/VIDEO FILE ONLY PLAYS THE AUDIO WITH A BLACK SCREEN

I'm trying to put a DVD together of my friends' concert, but every time I export from AVID to a QT file, import it, transcode it, and put it in a timeline, it only plays audio and a black screen.
I went back into AVID and made sure that I exported both audio and video...I did. Then I checked the QT file, and it plays the audio and video.
I exported the files as uncompressed. Should I use a compressor?

  • Some avi-files not playing on QuickTime Pro 7.0.4

I tried to play a few avi-file movies using QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 on my Mac OS X 10.4.4, but unfortunately, I keep getting the message: "Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site." After going on that site, I downloaded some of the available free software, but the problem remains. Playing the movies with a third-application like the VLC, works fine. I wish QuickTime Pro would have the same capabilities in playing avi files like other Players. Do you have an idea how I can solve the problem?
    Thanks for your support!

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I will remain with the VLC for playing AVI files that donnot play on the QT Player as the VLC plays almost any movie file. I came across an interesting article regarding the subject:
    QuickTime: About Playing .AVI Files
Learn why an .AVI file may not play as expected in QuickTime Player.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. The .AVI format is what is known as a container format. It specifies a way in which a file may contain audio and video data. It does not specify how that data is encoded. The encoding of audio and video data is specified in what are known as codecs. A codec (short for COmpressor/DECompressor) tells the computer how to decode the audio and video tracks that have been encoded within the .AVI file. QuickTime Player can use numerous codecs by default. You can also add additional codecs to extend QuickTime's features using plug-ins or third-party installations.
When QuickTime opens an .AVI file, it checks to see which codecs were used to encode the audio and video tracks within it. For example, an .AVI file may contain a video track encoded in the Cinepak codec and an audio track encoded with the ALaw 2:1 codec. If both the audio and the video were compressed using a codec that QuickTime can use, the file will play normally. If the audio or video or both were created using codecs that QuickTime cannot use, you may see a message like the following:
"QuickTime is missing the software needed to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server"
    or
"You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename.avi" because the required compressor could not be found."
These messages are not an indication that anything is wrong with QuickTime Player.
Lists of audio and video codecs included with and supported by QuickTime are available from the QuickTime specifications page.
Using QuickTime Player, you may be able to determine which codec was used to compress an audio or video track:
    QuickTime 6 and earlier
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Movie menu, choose Get Movie Properties.
From the left pop-up menu in the Properties window, choose Sound Track or Video Track.
From the right pop-up menu, choose Format. The Format section shows the codec.
    QuickTime 7
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Window menu, choose Show Movie Info. The codec is listed next to Format.
If the .AVI file is encoded using a codec that is not included with QuickTime, you might be able to find and add that codec so QuickTime can play media encoded with it. Contact the party that publishes or distributes the codec to see if a QuickTime version is available. Many third-party QuickTime components are available on the QuickTime components page.

  • .MOV files not playing in Quicktime or importing into iTunes

I have .MOV files that were taken on my iPhone, imported into iTunes and then put in a folder outside of iTunes. Now they will not play in Quicktime. iTunes will not import them. Help!!!

How can I tell that. I have several. I am also unable to view them in the finder window like I can other .m4v or .mov files.

  • Why do my old QT files only play audio on QT X on Lion system

I have some old NTSC (DV/DVCPRO) videos that play well on my old Leopard system but on my new Lion Macbook Pro, only the audio will play.  The video will play from within Finder but when I double click and it launches QT, QT behaves as if its only an audio file.  This is true when I try to import into Final Cut X.  Final Cut shows it as an audio file BUT 2 of the files DO show video.  These are all 720x480 video dumps.  So 7 files show as audio files and 2 work correctly.  And all work fine under Quicktime 7.7 under Leopard 10.5.8.

Please disregard this posting.  I took the old file and ran it thru compressor in a 422 format and now everything works fine and only took about 10 minutes per hour of video.  I don't know how to cancel a request and I'm really pressed for time.  Thank you.

  • Saved File Only Plays The Audio?

    hey guys
so i loaded a .mov file that i downloaded and was editing it in iMovie 08 but when I go to export it, it saves and everything but then when I go to play it.. there's only the audio and no video??
    any help?
    thanks!

Now when I open it, it opens in Quicktime (i tried iTunes also) and plays the audio but where the video should be is just black.
As Winston indicated, it sounds as if your source file compression format is either Apple Animation or Apple Video. Both compression formats will import and edit in iMovie '08 normally but export with a "black" screen and a data rate little more than that of the audio track alone. This problem has existed since the initial release of iMovie '08.
i'm sorry for sounding like an idiot.. but can you tell me where to find that?
Load the source file (i.e., the one you imported to iMovie '08) into the QT Player. Go to the "Window" menu and select "Show Movie Inspector." When the "Inspector" window opens, check the information given in the "Format:" line.

  • So i got this laptop today, and i'm trying to put my iPod music on it. i got the music but it only plays when my ipod is plugged into it. when i unplug my ipod, and try to play music, it says cannot play previous purchases... someone please help!!

    someone please help me!

The ipod is not a backup device. The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  Without syncing:File>transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your backup copy of your  old computer to your new one.
