AIM 5.9 and iChat

I've been working on doing video chat from my Mac to my in-laws PC. We got it to work last night with them using AIM 5.9. The only thing is that the window which they see us in is only 1"x1 1/2" (rather small). First, is there a way to change that window size. They said they couldn't get it any bigger... Second, is there any word on getting iChat to work with AIM 6.0 and will that allow for a bigger video chat window.
We did try Skype and we got it to work, however, the quality was horrible. We were very pixilated and the sound was broken up on both ends (for all practicle purposes, it didn't work..) Now, I don't know if there are settings that need to be adjusted or changed. If you have any tips, please let me know. Also, if you could answer my other questions above that would great.
Thanks,
Nate

Hi Dennis,
First. No That's the size.
Ignore AIM 6.0 for now.
At this stage to get a Bigger pic mean the PC end has to get Trillian Pro at $25
As for Skype and picture pixelation that sounds like a Bandwidth problem.
Try System Preferences > Qicktime > Streaming and set it ti 1.5Mbps it will help iChat anyway.

  • AIM and ichat, video not working

I have 2 aol email accounts and aim with those. I am a little confused on some things. First I have the free aol email and instant messenger. Nothing is downloaded onto my computer, I just signed up for an email account and set it up in mail and ichat. I keep seeing things about versions of aol, well I don't have a version downloaded.
Can this be the reason that I can not hear people when they conference to me? They hear and see me, and I see them, just no sound from them.
A friend of mine has same computer I have, bought his 2 days before I bought mine and he said he's had no problem using his ichat. then last night he started having problems and he said the only thing he did was run permssions repair. Which I had also done. So either the permission repair caused something to change that we can no longer use it or there is something else going on.
I have a linksys router, I have plug and play enabled, I have also tried enabling ports, there is no firewall. The friend has same setup and he NEVER went in and changed settings on his router, it just instantly worked. We also have the same ISP. No ports are being blocked by them. I have also enabled all ports to see if that would help.
the other person I can not connect to is another story. I need to get mine up and running before I work on hers. She has a wireless pc, and dsl..I am going to check her setting, aol version, and such once mine is proven to work with someone.
I also can not use big board games...I get a message that says I am behind a firewall (which I am not), I had also tried same thing with the ports, or it says that I have a translated network address. I am guessing that these problems are linked.
Another person that is a pc tech suggested I setup static ip for my computer and all that mess, and we tried it and still no fix.
Someone here suggested changing a setting in quicktime for streamline to be less than 1.5 it was set to 384 (or something) so I left it there.
Yes, all microphones where turned on..it is built in isight.

Well, this problem is solved, it took several different posts to get answers that worked.
But here is what got me up and running.
First, reason I can not connect to pc friend is because she is using the newest version on aim and she needs to be using 5.9 (tried finding who here told me that to give credit, but I can't find the info)
I don't know why I can't connect to my mac friend. I may be able to now that I fixed somethings, but he's not been online for me to test it out. However, he was able to chat with other people and then he changed some things and now he's not. So, when he is online again I will go over his setup as well.
Ichat would have worked with no special configurations for me, right out of the box. However, big bang board games will not let me get online and trying to get that online is where I changed things that prevented ichat from ever working.
If you are having this problem with linksys or netgear router..just turn on plugnplay in router configurations. It is usually on be default. No need to have ports enabled.
For you mac firewall, just have it turned on, no special ports being opened.
I do have bonjour chat checked in settings, but I am told that this does not need to be checked. Do not have apple remote sharing checked.
I do have 10.4.8 installed, so I did not need to go back to an older version.
This just boiled down to I turned my firewall off and never thought that would cause me not to be able to chat.

  • Two questions:  how do Skype and iChat compare for group video?  quality, reliability, cost, etc are important.  2) Is my MobileMe ID what I need to use in the window in making an iChat buddy?  It only says AIM above the window, online tutorial differs.

    Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

  • AIM and iCHAT  HELP!!!

Just installed AIM on a DELL with Vista, trying to chat with a MacBook. AIM to iCHAT should work, right? But, iCHAT keeps screwing up and saying there's a communication error.

For the last several days, I haven't been able to log onto my screen name. I have a mac book pro and have kept my aim screen name and used it for my ichat as well. I have done this successfully for the last few months.
But now every time I attempt to log on to my ichat or aim I receive the same error message. "You have attempted to log in too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again." I waited about 10 minutes before attempting to log into ichat again and the same error message came up. I waited an hour and then attempted to log onto aim and the same error message appeared. I then decided to wait a day and try on a different computer and the same error message appeared when I attempted to log into my aim screen name on the mac and the dell computers.
However, I am able to log onto both ichat and aim using my friend's screen name. Therefore, it appears as though the problem is with my screen name and not with the computers connection or with aim as a whole. I really need to use the screen name as I have had it for over ten years and don't want to change it at this stage. Please help me fix this problem as I seem to have attempted everything.

  • Aim and iChat

Is there a way to combine an aim account with an iChat account?

If you mean you use AIM on a PC somewhere that ID /Screen Name can be used in iChat
If you mean move names across from one Buddy list to another that can be done by saving the one list by using AIM for Mac which has an Export/Import feature.
However this does not merge the lists - it overwrites one with the other info.

  • AOL and iChat work sometimes

I am trying to figure out why AOL and iChat work sometimes and other times it doesn't. I am trying to video chat with a family member and some of the time I can make a connection just fine and other times we get error code 8. If it was a firewall issue wouldn't it never work?

For the last several days, I haven't been able to log onto my screen name. I have a mac book pro and have kept my aim screen name and used it for my ichat as well. I have done this successfully for the last few months.

  • Messenger and ichat on the iphone. It is happening right now!!!!

I was very impressed by the fact that I can use my hotmail messenger and ichat on my iphone and chat away with my friends. It is completely perfect and I really think it was what was missing on the iphone.
For anyone who do not think is true go to:
http://www.meebo.com on the iphone and go to MSN for messenger or AIM for ichat.
    You will love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes meebi works for a web based chat type service. It's still not true native iChat support on the iPhone. Which means the user has to go to Safari first rather than opening iChat right on the home screen. It's a nice "workaround" again for the iPhone.

  • Does the new AIM Triton work with Ichat?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if the new AIM Triton works with Ichat AV? I know the Beta version was not working but don't know about the new triton release.
Also, has anyone tried video/audio communication between Trillian and Ichat? Does it work? Is it better than AIM?
    Thanks,
    Stefano

I have been working with the Triton on a PC and after much research (frustration), I have found this stated on the AIM support site:
    http://www.aim.com/helpfaq/startingout/getstarted.adp?aolp=#six
Q: Is AIM Triton compatible with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat?
A: : AIM Triton works seamlessly with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat. You can send and receive instant messages with your buddies using any of these clients. Certain features may not work across all clients at this time. Voice Chat with more than two people only works with other Triton users. Video Chat will work only between two Triton users at this time.
So after reading around, I believe the 5.9 will video to the iChat 3's but I haven't had the time to try. Other posts suggest this to be true. Including many by Ralph.

  • AIM User To AIM User Possible With iChat?

    Hello,
We came across an iChat problem today and I'm not sure if I have this straight or not - here's the story. I have an AIM account (I haven't set up a dot mac or mobile me account yet). My Mom has an AIM account as well. My brother has a dot mac account. I can video chat with my brother (AIM account to dot mac account). My Mom can video chat with by brother (AIM account to dot mac account). But my Mom and I cannot video chat with each other (AIM account to AIM account). Is it possible for an AIM account to video chat with another AIM account using iChat or have I got this all wrong - does one of us have to at least have a dot mac (or mobile me) account? When my Mom and I try to initiate a video chat, we keep getting a "communication error". When I initiate a chat with my Mom, iChat "rings" on her end - she clicks "accept" and boom - "communication error". When my Mom initiates a video chat with me, iChat "rings" on my end - I click "accept" and boom - "communication error" again.
My Mom uses an iMac G5/2 Ghz running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and iChat 3.1.9. I use an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and iChat 4.0.7. My brother has an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and iChat 4.0.7.
Does anyone know what the problem may be?
Thanks so much in advance for your help.
    Gerard

I did try port 443 and I even tried creating a new AIM account but that didn't work. It just occurred to me that my Mom has a router and I have a router but my brother doesn't have a router and as I mentioned above, my Mom can video chat with my brother and I can video chat with my brother but my Mom and I can't video chat - we get a "communication error" - the error is -8.
So when my Mom and I try connecting together to video chat, it seems like her router and my router are preventing the video chat connection. I don't understand why my Mom (with router) can video chat with my brother (no router on his end) and why I (with router) can video chat with my brother (no router on his end). I should also mention that my Mom and I can text chat but we can't do an audio or video chat?
Does this help any? Do I need to configure something in my router to allow this connection to my Mom? I have a D-Link DI-604 wired router (firmware revision 3.51) with default factory settings and my Mom has a D-Link EBR-2310 wired router with default factory settings (not sure of the firmware).
    Thanks so much in advance,
    Gerard

  • Why does my AIM keep disconnecting in iChat? (MacOSv10.7.5 iChatv6.0.2)

I have recently updated to Mac OS Lion now at 10.7.5 & cannot upgrade to Mavericks as my machine is just under the requirements. Ever since I have made this upgrade, my AIM accounts on iChat have been logging themselves out in about under 5 minutes. I log them back in, but then same things happpen. To note, my GCHAT & JABBER accounts stay logged in without problem.
How do I stop this from happening? I have read may of the previous reported issue & the results I have found instructions to delete the preference files com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist & com.apple.iChat.plist which i have done several times (deleting them before quitting & deleting after quit) but to no avail.
My server setting for both accounts is..
    Server: login.oscar.aol.com
    Port: 5190
This did not use to happen to me before the LION upgrade. I also use to have CHAX installed, but I have uninstalled it as I know it no longer works with 10.7 & above.
Any trick here that I am missing?

    HI,
I have Little Snitch to show me the pop ups to Allow the items for Messages (and previously iChat) when it launches.
I believe you can set different option other than Allow Forever and Until Quit.
The drop down shows me this:-
I thinks that the Until Logout is you as the Mac User login rather than the Apps login to AIM.
I have not tried using it this way.
The "Once" item at the bottom might give clearer idea if you had to allow it each time it logged in.
I am not quite sure what the Console messages is about.
The URL would most likely be the IP address that you computer is at.
About ten minutes might be Idle time  if you are not using the Keyboard or Mouse at all.
Of course this message may have nothing to do with the Network dropping out.
Something that happens regularly such as fetching Mail might be the cause.

  • MSN/hotmail and ichat videoconferencing

i'm new - forgive, i ahve read lots of the threads here and understand that i can set up msn messenger through the ichat, but this will still only allow me im exchange and not proper videoconferencing? have i understood correctly? is it true that the only way i can use videoconferencing with ichat is via aim or mac? and if so, when will ichat and msn be workable together for videoconferencing?

    i'm new - forgive,
Welcome to the Apple forum, Billymac5.
i ahve read lots of the threads
here and understand that i can set up msn messenger
through the ichat, but this will still only allow me
im exchange and not proper videoconferencing? have i
    understood correctly?
No, MSN does not work through iChat. However, there are ways to use "substitute" MSN clients (aMSN, I believe, is one) to chat with Windows MSN users. I don't think this allows video, however; I could be wrong.
is it true that the only way i
can use videoconferencing with ichat is via aim or
    mac?
iChat is only compatible with AIM 5.9 for Windows, or with Trillian (though the paid Pro version is necessary for video).
and if so, when will ichat and msn be workable
    together for videoconferencing?
That's a question for MS, rather than for Apple. :S It is my understanding that MS did not agree to make cross-platform videoconferencing possible, while AOL did. Sorry.

  • Trouble video chatting between Mac Mini and PC. Prob. with Skype and IChat

    Hello,
I hope someone can help my dad and I because we have been trying to solve this problem since Xmas. I will try to give you as much information on this as I can so that someone can hopefully help us.
He has a Mac Mini (OS 10.3.9) and a Logitech Quickcam 9.5 and I have a PC. We have tried IChat 2.1 to AIM 5.9 and initially he could see me and hear me and I could see him but couldn't hear him. Now when we try to connect. I can see myself but can't hear or see him. We have looked through a lot of the recent forums and have tried what was suggested with no luck.
We have also tried Mac Skype 2.0.06 to PC Skype 2.5.0.151 but with Skype he can see and hear me but I can either only hear him (when he has not started the video) or only see him when he has started the video. We cannot seem to get both going at the same time. He has made sure that "enable skype video" is ticked in the skype preferences and we have tried ticking "start my video automatically" but it still doesn't seem to work. I would prefer to use Skype if possible because the video is larger and I am more familiar with it.
If someone can help us with this, I would be so happy!
    Thanks in advance!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi fantabuloussara,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Ok If this was a new computer and iChat was started when the computer was the first time then some settings will not have taken effect.
Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming or Connection Speed tab (depending if Quicktime 6 or 7).
Set the drop down to 1.5Mbps/T1/LAN and restart iChat.
IS the Mac Firewall ON ?
In that case you will need this at the second pic.

  • Communicating between iMessage and iChat with Google accounts?

I am using iMessages and my wife is using iChat.  She signed into iChat using her Google account.  When I try to message her, it says that her account is not registered with iMessages.  Why can't I send her a message?

    HI,
iChat can use AIM accounts, Jabber or Yahoo in iChat 6 as well as the Bonjour option.
You cannot chat Jabber to AIM  or Yahoo to Jabber or even Bonjour to any of the others.
It is AIM to AIM or Jabber to Jabber.
In Messages as well as AIM, Bonjour, Jabber and Yahoo you have the ability to run an iMessages Account
The iMessages account can send Text messages only to Apple IDs and iPhone Numbers on Apple iOS devices and those using an iMessage Account in Messages.
A GoogleMail (GoogleTalk) ID will not be an iMessages account is used in iChat.
That is not to say the Google Mail ID is not an Apple ID and may be used as such on an iPhone or iPad.
You cannot iMessages any of the other services.
You need to get an Google Mail ID, Enable Talk on the Google Settings and then enter it as an Account in Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Click the + icon lower left and Change the top items drop down to GoogleTalk.
(Or get a new wife with a Mountain Lion computer )

  • What's the difference between FaceTime and iChat?

I have been reading about the new FaceTime software for Macs that is coming out soon. I don't quite understand the difference between the new FaceTime and iChat. Can someone please enlighten me?

The main difference is that iChat is a text-and-video chat client for IM services like AIM, jabber. It it used to communicate with "buddies" from those IM services.
FaceTime is a video only chat client for video calling between apple devices. Instead of using friends lists or buddy lists, it uses your devices address book to place calls. Currently supported devices are iPod touch, iPhone, iMac (with beta software). It is expected that the next iPad will include this feature as well. I would also expect FaceTime client to be released for PCs somewhere down the line.
