AIM 5.9 for mac

ive read the popular webpage tutorial about ichating with pc using AIM. ive tried to use ichat at first but on the tutorial it says 5.9 is the version of AIM that u can also use to video chat but at AIM.com it is an .exe file anyway to convert or any other suggestions because the newest version for mac and AIM to work together is 4.7 which doesnt have an option to video chat. so again any way to convert or any ideas to do with 5.9

They mean that AIM 5.9 is what a PC user needs to use in order to chat with an iChat user on a Mac. The reason AIM 5.9 is an .exe file is because it's for Windows only. You can have a cross-platform video chat with iChat (Mac user) and AIM 5.9 (Windows user). HTH.

My wife uses iChat on her new iMac (10.4.x). I'm on military deployment with our old PowerBook G4 (10.3.9). I installed AIM 4.7 for Mac but not able to video chat with her. I can't find a video option in AIM 4.7. I have a USB webcam. Am I missing something?

You need to use iChat.
AIM 4.7 for Mac does not Video.
A trial @mac name or an AIM Name are free.

AIM 1.1 for MAC Crashes when sending first IM

I didn't know where else to post this. I reinstalled the program and it did not help. Here is the error message. Thanks!

IChat vs AIM vs other IM's for mac newbie

I’m a new Mac user and so far, I’ve been a little underwhelmed (my first experience setting up the mac was frustrating in that after spending time with Apple on the phone, they informed me that one iMac cannot share the same Photo Library between two different users without an external harddrive… UGH!). But I’m not one to give up quickly.
I recently bought a webcam for my work pc so I can check in on my wife/kids at home. I was running AIM here at work and setup an AIM ID for my wife but used that ID within iChat. Both the video and sound quality leave much to be desired. I bought an PC Magazine Editor’s Choice webcam (Logitech Quickcam). I’ve heard that video is quite good between two macs.
What would you recommend to improve my video/audio? I’ve looked at other IM’s but it gets a little confusing between single-protocal/multi-protocal, what’s available on mac, and what supports video. Maybe there’s a better combination than AIM on PC to iChat on Mac. Maybe I should run AIM on both? Yahoo on both (not sure I can)?
Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

How to get AIM to use my .mac iChat address

I use a few different accounts for IM (for personal and business), including the primary one that uses my .mac email address. I can set up the AIM ones to use AIM Mobile, but can't find a way to get AIM to recognize my .mac name for that purpose. When I try to login, it says that is a valid name, but when I ask to change the password the response is not sent to my .mac email address.
Apparently there is another user registered with the same name (minus the .mac suffix). Could AIM just be looking at the part before the .mac and assuming it's the same person? For all I know, I could have registered that name with AOL years ago, but if I did it is sending my password to an email account that I no longer use.

Lync for Mac - How to customize profile image

We are beginning to roll out Lync for Mac (and windows) and on the Mac side there doesn't seem to be a clear cut (easy) way to customize your icon like you can do in AIM, Yahoo Messenger, etc. Knowing that I will get a bunch of calls regarding this,
how exactly do you do it? I assume it's pointing to your contact in Outlook 2011, and I checked my contact and it has a custom picture there.
Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

I completely agree with you that M$ needs to make better Mac software - i'm having some major issues with Office 2011 especially Outlook 2011 - and that is definately not Apples fault
The reason i'm running on a Mac is due to customer demand - I'm an IT pro and more and more of my customers are introducing them as BYOD - however the OS does have very limited application support compared to a Windows system - hence Parallels and Windows
7 Enterprise on my machine
I do love that i can work on a customers VPN from the Windows side and keep the Mac side off the VPN so i can do research, browse internet, do mail and Lync etc. Really comes in hand when testeing Lync between two different organizations from one machine
I just had my first experience today dealing with Apple tech support - took me 1.5 hour to get to the right department and i had to INSIST on them gathering system information, they were going to wash their hands
After upgrading to 10.8 and latest build of Parallels 7, my machine will completely freeze from time to time
It could be 10 minutes into my work or 3 hours into my work
Apple is pointitng fingers at Parallels, since that is running all the time - and Parallels is pointing fingers at Apple because the whole OS is freezing
Apple however did finally say they would escalate, so now there is a two day wait for the escalation engineers to review my reports and data and they will then get back to me
I haven't seen a Windows machine freeze completely since before the NT days
that was one of the main features when NT came out that everything was isolated and an application would't take down the host OS
but the Mac OS is definately a lot more cute than Win, however right i have to forcefully restart my machine up to 5 times a day, making it very problematic to get any work done
and yes i still think it's a toy with it's own place in the market and we need Apple to keep MS honest
I really like both companies, and thank God we are all free to have our own opinions

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A malicious computer worm has been found that targets Apple Computer Inc.'s Mac OS X operating system, believed to be the first such virus aimed specifically at the Mac platform.
The worm is called OSX/Leap-A, according to a posting on the Web site of antivirus software company Sophos, which said the worm is spread via instant messaging programs.
The worm attempts to spread via Apple's (Research) iChat instant messaging program, which is compatible with America Online's popular AIM instant messaging program, according to the Sophos Web site.
The worm sends itself to available contacts on the infected users' buddy list in a file called "latestpics.tgz," according to the Sophos Web site.
The vast majority of malicious hacks are aimed at Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system and some of its products, largely because Microsoft has more than 90 percent of the market for computer operating systems.
"This first Macintosh OS X threat is an example of the continuing spread of malicious code on to other platforms," said Vincent Weafer, senior director at Symantec Security Response, in a statement.
The worm will not automatically infect Mac computers, but will ask users to accept the file, Weafer said.
Symantec ranked the new worm as a Level 1 threat (with 5 being the most severe).
An Apple spokesperson was not immediately available to comment.

Mass Producing a iDVD project - Print shop for Mac

I have been doing a couple of iDVD projects for friends and family. One of my projects got into the hands of a school principal who would now like me to do a video yearbook for her school. I don't have the capabilities for mass production, but I am aware of companies that do this work. Can a copy of an iDVD project be used as a master for a large scale (500+ copies) production?
Also, one of the companies I am looking at has to have graphics from specific software:
"We can accept these software programs on Macintosh or PC:

•Illustrator

•CorelDRAW
•InDesign"
I have been using Print Shop for Mac because it incorperates iDVD templates in it's projects. Any of the choices above as similar match to Print Shop?

If you plan to have these DVD's "mass produced" use DLT > Glass Master. Also i'd recommend using apple's top end / professional apps and not consumer / iLife apps in order to avoid possible returns and possible playback issues with many consumer medias.
Pressed DVD's from a glass master have far fewer issues with playback (and also last longer) than a "burned" DVD-R medias.

I am a Army wife and want to download skype for my new mac notebook. but i am so afraid of downloading it and it causing virus or failure somehow. i was very very prone to virus on my pc, which is why i got a mac. how is skype for mac? recommended or not?

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

I just recently registered on this forum to see if I could help with answering questions from the users here. I did this because I like the apps and aims of Mozilla, and I'm willing to spend time helping people out with using these apps if I'm able to. That being said, questions worded like the one above do not make me want to spend much time being all that helpful.
My suggestion is that you wait a few hours (or day or so) before posting about a problem that is causing some negative emotional response for you.
If anyone has the same problem as what is described above, please post more information about their software versions (i.e. flash version), and whether or not the issue remains when taking the flash plugin out of the equation and using HTML5 on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/html5).
My initial thought is that the issue is with the flash plugin being used. Has another flash version been used?

Can you get iChat for windows or is it just for macs???

5.1 sound cards for Mac?

I've been searching around and I've seen mixed reports of different sound cards working or not working for Mac. I'm aiming for the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 card (SB1090). (Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Labs-SB1090-Blaster-Surround/dp/B0017QQQAE ) The only issue is that there is no volume control which is actually not an issue since my 5.1 surround receiver has one of those. I've seen nothing about the actual 5.1 working.
I've also heard about a Zalman 5.1 card (Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-ZM-RSSC-External-Sound-Card/dp/B0001OZ2K8 ) that I've read reports of fully working; 5.1 and all.
I'd like a collective opinion, and suggestions of which card I should buy. Thanks in advance.

Yes, but it's changing all the time. I see there's now an uncompressed multichannel version called TrueHD.
I own a M-Audio FW410, which does have 10 separate audio outputs, but the only way to make use of those is with an application that specifically allows that to happen. In my case, Pro-Tools can see and make use of the different channels... perhaps a stereo pair for the control room, and a stereo pair for headphone monitor mixes. I also have a DJ program which allows for a stereo pair for the main speakers, a stereo pair for headphones, and a stereo pair for the DJ booth speakers. In all cases, these are full bandwidth channels, nothing is compressed, and all handled specifically by an application designed to use multi channel outputs. But there is no way for me to use those while playing back DVD's on my Mac, as there is no decoder on board, which is the first thing that has to happen to get 6 discrete audio channels out of an AC3 stream. The DVD app just can't do it.
If you mean Apple's own DVD Player, then I think you're right. However, I have used the free VLC player with my little Hercules USB card to play DVDs in true 5.1 audio. I recall I have to use Audio Midi Setup first, but it works ok. It would really be worth your while trying this with your multichannel system. You can probably use Audio Midi Setup to nominate 6 out of 10 speakers for the 5.1 channels.
I'm not a gamer, never have been so I'm skating on less than thin ice here, but there are only three options as I see it for games.
The first is the audio is only in stereo. In this case, sending it via analog or digital to a receiver with Dolby Pro-Logic would give you 'fake' 5.1 surround.
I'm not sure you'd even get that! I think you'll only get stereo from the front two speakers.
The second is that the audio is an AC3 stream, in which case, sending it out of the optical outs to a receiver would properly decode it into 6 separate audio channels
Yes, but that depends on the game having AC3 content. With the power of the Core Audio 3D mixer it's not the way I'd do it, but another developer might see it differently.
The third is, like the audio programs I mentioned above, the game has the ability to assign certain channels to certain outputs in any combination from stereo to 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or more channels. As I said, I'm not a gamer, so have no idea of what the options are, but I'm guessing the last option is the least likely.
For that, you'd still need a separate FireWire or USB sound card.
NEITHER of the OP's device suggestions have anywhere near 6 discrete audio out's, so at best passing a digital signal to a receiver is the only thing he can do with those choices. My guess is most PC's don't have any kind of built in digital audio output, so for those kinds of computers, either of his choices would make sense. But since most modern Macs have a digital output to begin with, I stand by my original post.
I try to avoid PCs so I'm not up to date with their current abilities.
The Mac's multi-channel ability is compounded by Blu-Ray, who's HD audio streams can be multi-channel un-compressed, full bandwidth audio. The only way to access that audio directly from a BluRay disc is from discrete audio outputs on a Blu-Ray player, or thru an HDMI cable to a receiver who can handle that kind of audio stream.
BluRay can use TrueHD on (IFRC) up to 8 channels, but I don't think it's compulsory, so there may be BluRays out there which use compressed AC3.
I've ripped a few BluRay discs to my hard drive, but with the sad shape of HD playback on Macs, I'm mostly limited to listening to the AC3 streams, decoded by my receiver. +(Presumably, the newest generation of Macs allow for HDMI outputs, including uncompressed multi channel audio)+. I have had a limited amount of success using VLC for playback, and assigning the individual, uncompressed audio tracks to different outputs on my FW410, but haven't invested in the cabling necessary to hook that up to the discrete inputs on my receiver(and probably never will), but at least it SEEMS possible.
This is why we need a definitive answer from Apple. I'll keep you posted with the progress of my bug request, but I'm not holding my breath for anything soon.
