And just about a month later this issue comes up again. It seems that time is the only real answer to fixing this issue. I tried a combination of solutions last night and when I woke up this morning, I launched iChat...it flickered (like it does before it says you have logged in too many times too quickly) and I immediately quit the app.
Started up Adium, works like a charm.
Opened ichat about a half hour later, and started flickering again..what gives

So I've been having the dreaded
    "An AIM service error occurred.
    Error: Serv:RequestTimeout"
pretty much ever since I got my MacBook Pro a year ago. Up until recently, it only popped up maybe once a month. But now it's gotten to the point where I get the error message within 5-10 minutes of a chad starting with someone else. I have tried changing the port and whatnot, but I still get the same error message. I have gone through pages of similar topic forums, but no solution has fixed my problem.
    Does anyone have any advice?
P.S. I tried switching to Adium. I hate it.

Shut down the computer any router and modem.
Repower the Modem and wait until it says it is Ready.
Then any Router and wait again.
    Lastly power up the computer.
Also check that any DNS servers listed in the modem or router set up pages are copied across to the Mac > System Preferences > Network (Maybe advanced button > DNS tab).

An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout
    What do I do,
I try to msg some people and this is what I get, I opened some ports, I still get the message though!
    Anyone else?

    Hi Dan,
I've used iChat in the recent past with no problems. Nothing had changed in my environment and I confirmed that with my ISP. Just recently I've been getting the AIM problem were it say no response for 10sec and then the session ends. Was using a cannon camera when the problem started so I bought an iSight and am still having the same issue.
I use it to talk to my son and his wife. We both use Comcast cable, we both have new iMac's.

  • An AIM service error occurred, but where to Log-Out ?

    Here's a real basic question, due to be a head-slapping "of course !" ( I hope )
I just got Leopard last Sat, my brother Jim tonight, and he suggested an iChat so he could show me what was different on a big ol' MacPro.
There was a lot that mystified us about iChat on Tiger, let alone it's beefed-up Leopard incarnation, so I looked into it and got enough of the "An AIM service error occurred. Error: Serv:RequestTimeout " that I googled it and found this thread from right here on Apple Discussons : http://74.125.95.104/search?q=cache:H2ojIfDVIDoJ:discussions.apple.com/thread.js pa%3FthreadID%3D1208110An+AIM+service+error+occurred.+Error:Serv:RequestTimeout&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=safari
So many flummoxed by the same deal. But here's my problem & where I'm stupidly stuck :
To follow the suggestion & change server-ports, one must log out, but aside from Log-In being greyed out, I can find nowhere *to log out !* !!
It's one a' those really annoying Catch-22's too.
I have to log out to change the server-port, but can I change the port when logged-out ??
And where the *@#% is the log out option ?!
    Heh-heh ( help )
    ( thanks )

    Thanks Tony,
This time I went in, clicked in accounts from .mac to MoblieMe ( all I have is .mac and Bonjour . . . no AIM, which I thought I did ! ), but I decided MobileMe was likely not so "stable" and I switched it back to .mac. I checked Server Settings and I wasn't greyed out.
I switched it to 443, pioked around a bit, and now I am greyed out again !
I am also completely confused, if it ain't obvious !
    but thanks again !

  • AIM service error wont allow me to stay connected

An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout.. It tells me this when i try to talk to someone.. It tells other people i am available and they instant message me but i dont recieve them.. I need help, this is a brand new macbook and will not allow me to stay connected to aim!

    Hello,
To change the channels that the NetGear router is pushing the signal over, do the following:
Log into http://192.168.0.1 username: admin, password: password (this is the default unless you changed it, which I'd recommend for security anyway).
    Go to wireless settings
    Go to channel
Change it to something like "11" which seems to work best for me (although it can really depend with wireless interference in your area, other WiFi networks, cordless phones, microwaves, etc).
Go to the bottom and click save and then log out.
It could be possible that your wireless router is susceptible to wireless interference because of the channel it's communicating on and thus dropping your internet connection, thus causing AIM to disconnect.

  • AIM service error

I am trying to use iChat. When I do, I am able to send an IM to someone, but when they send an IM back, I get the following error message:
    AIM error:
An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout
and I am unable to view the IM from the other person.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There have been issues with both @Mac.com screen names and the new Mobile me names that end @me.com
This has been because the change over has not been as smooth as Apple would have wished.
The AIM server have to check with these Lists to verify the Screen name and Password but the Apple end has had problems.
What it pays to do at present for a @me.com account is add it as if it is an AIM type name and type the whole ID including the suffix.
Some people have reported that this also works for @mac.com names
At this screen and Adding an Account in iChat > Preferences > Accounts and using the Plus Button....
    Enter it like this ...

  • "An AIM service error" message

Whenever I try and sent an IM in iChat AV 3.1.8 I get the following message:
An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout
I'm using iChat on 2 different macs and get the same message on both. I am able to receive IM's and there are 2 people on my buddy list that I can actually get an IM through to.
    Any suggestions would help.
    Thnx

    PowerMac G5/PawerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Looking further.
    Open iChat
    Go to Preferences > Accounts
Make sure you are Logged out of AIM (Buddy list with no Buddies - done in the iChat Menu)
IN the Server Settings tab is the Server listed as login.oscar.aol.com ?
You have changed the port to 443 yes ?
You should have both iChat/computers set to Allow Multiple Logins for that AIM/@mac account.
The Password for your AIM or @Mac account used with iChat should be 16 characters or less.
It should also only be numbers or letters.
    To start at the beginning.
    1) iChat can login and show your Buddies ?
It is after this when trying to Text chat of any sort that you have problems ?
    2) Do you have problems with A/V Chats ?
    3) Have you ever tried a deletion of the preferences file com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist ?
    4) Did you go through the Start up Screens like this ?
    http://www.siriusaddict.com/ichat.html
    5) Tell me how you have Added Buddies ?
Did it match the iChat 3 way http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page6.html ?

  • Ok seriously, this whole "Error: Serv:RequestTimeout" is ridiculous!

What is the deal with this?!? Sometimes (very rarley) iChat seems to work ok, but most of the time whenever I'm trying to chat with somebody, I'm able to send my message, but instead of receiving their message, I get these annoying pop ups that tell me "An AIM service error occurred. Error: Serv:RequestTimeout".
I've read about others having this problem, and I've done the whole Port 443 thing, I've tried forwarding ports on my router, I've tried erasing and re-installing OS X (because I'm always having other issues, with sites like youtube - don't get me started), but nothing is working.
Does anybody have any other solutions besides the ones that have already been stated that might work? This is getting old. Oh and btw, none of these problems were happening when I first got my MacBook (in January) and things were working perfectly for almost 2 months. So this is pretty recent, like the last two weeks or so.

Hi! ok.......i'll do my best. but it's word for word the same problem as junlee. When chatting, "Error:Serv:RequestTimeout" appears and interrupts my connection. only happens at home.
I'm with Comcast and I have the WCG200-CC router
    Mac Firewall status:
set to Allow all incoming connections
    Quicktime Streaming setting:
I followed your advice and Set System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5 and Restart iChat. Then set iChat menu > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps
Network Settings ((USing DHCP or other)
If Using DHCP what device is being the DHCP server.

Methods of opening ports in modem and/or router.
    no clue on that one
    Is Internet Sahring On ?
    no
What Logi in port is iChat Using.
switched to 443, have tried 80 and the default
What ISP are we talking about ?
    Comcast
What have you tried to get around any issues ?
    set at 443
    deleted com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restarted iChat
    MANY TIMES
all was well with Tiger. the moment i upgraded, hit and miss errors. i'm bounced off my own router about every 5 minutes or so. but on some days, no worries. extremely annoying and interrupts my workflow when discussing things via chat.
i found ONE piece of information saying that Leopard has major problems with G routers which i learned mine is and that only N routers running at 5 Ghz work.
so, that's what i know. i can't switch from Comcast.
    any thoughts?
thanks in advance. you are always SO helpful! helped me 3 years ago!!!

  • Error: Serv:RequestTimeout

iChat shows all of my AIM buddies as offline and when I go to instant message one of them I get the following error after a few minutes: Error: Serv:RequestTimeout.
I was able to sign on iChat about an hour ago so I am unsure as to why this is happening? Any help is appreciated.

ya, you did the right thing... what you really need to do is switch to port 443, and turn ssl on... otherwise, it would go right back to 5109...

  • An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout

Hi All, I have no idea why I started getting this message, and it is only when I start the chat , not when someone im's me and I answer back. I did change the port to 443 and then back and I don't know. I was working fine untill a few days ago. Thank You For any Help. makes me nuts!!! Please help,
    Desperate Daj

If changing ports does not work and you can not login with iChat then check the Screen name and password you are using on the AIM or @mac site
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121885
If you can log on to the the correct site you got your Screen name from then there is one more check if you are using @mac. This means making sure your Password is 16 characters or less.
If that is Ok or you have an AIM screen name then you go to Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
    and Restart iChat.

when i sign on I get this message.  An undefined AIM session error has occurred.

    Hi,
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts  go to the Server Setting tab for the account in question
Change the Port from 5190 to 443  (you can only do this whilst Logged out)
Now go to the Account Info tab and tick the Use this Account box to Log in
If you still can't log in then return to the Server Settings and deselect SSL and try logging in again.
