AIM and Gchat in iChat

A quick question -
I have both an AIM and gchat account. To use both on iChat, do I ahve to set up two different "lists"? On Adium, the two accounts are put together so I only need to keep one window open. Can I do the same with iChat? Thanks for your help.

Cant remember if Chax 1.5 does this http://www.ksuther.com/chax/
It does in Chax 2 but that for 10.5.

  • AIM and ichat, video not working

I have 2 aol email accounts and aim with those. I am a little confused on some things. First I have the free aol email and instant messenger. Nothing is downloaded onto my computer, I just signed up for an email account and set it up in mail and ichat. I keep seeing things about versions of aol, well I don't have a version downloaded.
Can this be the reason that I can not hear people when they conference to me? They hear and see me, and I see them, just no sound from them.
A friend of mine has same computer I have, bought his 2 days before I bought mine and he said he's had no problem using his ichat. then last night he started having problems and he said the only thing he did was run permssions repair. Which I had also done. So either the permission repair caused something to change that we can no longer use it or there is something else going on.
I have a linksys router, I have plug and play enabled, I have also tried enabling ports, there is no firewall. The friend has same setup and he NEVER went in and changed settings on his router, it just instantly worked. We also have the same ISP. No ports are being blocked by them. I have also enabled all ports to see if that would help.
the other person I can not connect to is another story. I need to get mine up and running before I work on hers. She has a wireless pc, and dsl..I am going to check her setting, aol version, and such once mine is proven to work with someone.
I also can not use big board games...I get a message that says I am behind a firewall (which I am not), I had also tried same thing with the ports, or it says that I have a translated network address. I am guessing that these problems are linked.
Another person that is a pc tech suggested I setup static ip for my computer and all that mess, and we tried it and still no fix.
Someone here suggested changing a setting in quicktime for streamline to be less than 1.5 it was set to 384 (or something) so I left it there.
Yes, all microphones where turned on..it is built in isight.

Well, this problem is solved, it took several different posts to get answers that worked.
But here is what got me up and running.
First, reason I can not connect to pc friend is because she is using the newest version on aim and she needs to be using 5.9 (tried finding who here told me that to give credit, but I can't find the info)
I don't know why I can't connect to my mac friend. I may be able to now that I fixed somethings, but he's not been online for me to test it out. However, he was able to chat with other people and then he changed some things and now he's not. So, when he is online again I will go over his setup as well.
Ichat would have worked with no special configurations for me, right out of the box. However, big bang board games will not let me get online and trying to get that online is where I changed things that prevented ichat from ever working.
If you are having this problem with linksys or netgear router..just turn on plugnplay in router configurations. It is usually on be default. No need to have ports enabled.
For you mac firewall, just have it turned on, no special ports being opened.
I do have bonjour chat checked in settings, but I am told that this does not need to be checked. Do not have apple remote sharing checked.
I do have 10.4.8 installed, so I did not need to go back to an older version.
This just boiled down to I turned my firewall off and never thought that would cause me not to be able to chat.

  • TA20851 aim and ichat

i have a macbook air, osx operating system version 10.7.3 and i've had it for a few months. recently my ichat stopped letting me vc, sceen share, or audio chat (i use my aim account on ichat). i have aim version 1.0.9. and i dont remember if i installed it myself or if it came on the computer. i tried going to the apple store and they said it was a problem with my aim and i dont know what to do...any suggestions?

    Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • AIM and iCHAT  HELP!!!

Just installed AIM on a DELL with Vista, trying to chat with a MacBook. AIM to iCHAT should work, right? But, iCHAT keeps screwing up and saying there's a communication error.

For the last several days, I haven't been able to log onto my screen name. I have a mac book pro and have kept my aim screen name and used it for my ichat as well. I have done this successfully for the last few months.
But now every time I attempt to log on to my ichat or aim I receive the same error message. "You have attempted to log in too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again." I waited about 10 minutes before attempting to log into ichat again and the same error message came up. I waited an hour and then attempted to log onto aim and the same error message appeared. I then decided to wait a day and try on a different computer and the same error message appeared when I attempted to log into my aim screen name on the mac and the dell computers.
However, I am able to log onto both ichat and aim using my friend's screen name. Therefore, it appears as though the problem is with my screen name and not with the computers connection or with aim as a whole. I really need to use the screen name as I have had it for over ten years and don't want to change it at this stage. Please help me fix this problem as I seem to have attempted everything.

  • IChat and .Mac account and AIM and .Mac account...

    Hello.
Well I'm using iChat or Adium with my .Mac account, for text chat only (sometimes for video or audio but it's not my wish for this).
So, at work, we have an internal application that is based I think on AIM, and I can log myself with a AIM account (I created one for tests). But when I put my .mac email with @mac.com it's not working, and without it is. But it seems it's not the same account. Do we have two accounts ?
How to log in with AIM on Windows to use my .Mac account, so my friends can text me on the PC too ?? Is that possible ?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Sebastien,
    This Sametime ?
I have not heard of this and that web site does not seem to indicate it is an AIM client even though the info you posted says that it.
I would look at the Support on that site and see if it is any help.
There is a link from the Apple .mac list to the AIM name list but this might not be accessible to a third party app like this.
Most of the other third party apps insist you have an AIM name first whether it is for a Mac (Proteus, AdiumX)or a PC (Trillian).
AIM Express is a Java app that will work on PC or Mac.
This page says that it is AIM or AOL names only.

  • IChat AIM and Ports

I can iChat using AIM screen names with other Mac's, but I can't with my father on his PC using AIM and his AIM screen name. I have read through many posts on this topic, but have merely succeeded in thoroughly confusing myself.
I have an iMac with OSx 10.5.7. It is on a wireless network using a Netgear WGR614 router. I am using iChat version 4. My father has a Windows XP computer. He is using a D-Links DI-624 router. His version of AIM is 6.9. I have asked him to turn off "Real Time," although I'm not quite sure that he has figured out how to do that yet (he just turned 80 years old).
Can I correctly assume that because I can iChat successfully with other Mac users that my router is properly configured and that the problem lies with my father's set up?
If the problem is with my father's set up, this Apple support document suggests that with respect to configuring his DI-624 router, all he needs to do is turn off UPnP. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1787. But I can't tell if the document applies only to Mac users of iChat or to Windows users of AIM who wish to chat with Mac users of iChat. My father is in the latter catergory.
If my father must configure his DI-624 router, which ports mucst he open/forward? The ones that I have seen listed that iChat users are suppose to open, the ones that AIM users are suppose to open, both?
Finally, the DI-624 seems to permit two methods to open ports: "Firewall Rules" and "port triggering". Which should I use?
    Thanks for all your help.
    John

    Hi
Which Netgear WGR 614 version do you have ?
Things don't really improve with this series until Version 9 (It's about the only dud for iChat Netgear there is.)
    It should be doing UPnP
DOS (Or SPI) and Ping Blocking in the WAN Set up page should both be Off.
If that D-Link does UPnP then use that.
    On his PC
He will need to do this Blue stuff in his Firewall
    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page12.html#_Service
    Simplefied version
Go to Start > Control Panels.
    Access the Firewall
    Click the Exceptions tab
Add AIM6.exe as the method suggests (Navigate to the Program Files > AIM blah blah)
Enable UPnP as well in the List.
Your Post suggests you have Read this
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
Turning Off Real Time supersedes this.
THE AIM FAQ and Pics about Real Time
If his does not do UPnP then use this page as well as the port 5190 listed he will need to enter as many as he can fro the Group 1024-5000
Unfortunately he can not add the Group and has to enter each port on one entry. (He will not get all the ports in the table - technically 4 should be enough)

    hi,
Which version of iChat and which version of the OS ?
It can make slight difference in what we have to tell you.
As a start open iChat if it will launch
Go to the iChat Menu (The menu for the App)
    Select Preferences > Accounts
Bonjour is always in this List
Highlight the name you entered incorrectly and then use the minus button at the bottom to delete it.

  • Aim and iChat

Is there a way to combine an aim account with an iChat account?

If you mean you use AIM on a PC somewhere that ID /Screen Name can be used in iChat
If you mean move names across from one Buddy list to another that can be done by saving the one list by using AIM for Mac which has an Export/Import feature.
However this does not merge the lists - it overwrites one with the other info.

  • Why does my AIM keep disconnecting in iChat? (MacOSv10.7.5 iChatv6.0.2)

I have recently updated to Mac OS Lion now at 10.7.5 & cannot upgrade to Mavericks as my machine is just under the requirements. Ever since I have made this upgrade, my AIM accounts on iChat have been logging themselves out in about under 5 minutes. I log them back in, but then same things happpen. To note, my GCHAT & JABBER accounts stay logged in without problem.
How do I stop this from happening? I have read may of the previous reported issue & the results I have found instructions to delete the preference files com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist & com.apple.iChat.plist which i have done several times (deleting them before quitting & deleting after quit) but to no avail.
My server setting for both accounts is..
    Server: login.oscar.aol.com
    Port: 5190
This did not use to happen to me before the LION upgrade. I also use to have CHAX installed, but I have uninstalled it as I know it no longer works with 10.7 & above.
Any trick here that I am missing?

    HI,
I have Little Snitch to show me the pop ups to Allow the items for Messages (and previously iChat) when it launches.
I believe you can set different option other than Allow Forever and Until Quit.
The drop down shows me this:-
I thinks that the Until Logout is you as the Mac User login rather than the Apps login to AIM.
I have not tried using it this way.
The "Once" item at the bottom might give clearer idea if you had to allow it each time it logged in.
I am not quite sure what the Console messages is about.
The URL would most likely be the IP address that you computer is at.
About ten minutes might be Idle time  if you are not using the Keyboard or Mouse at all.
Of course this message may have nothing to do with the Network dropping out.
Something that happens regularly such as fetching Mail might be the cause.

  • Does the new AIM Triton work with Ichat?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if the new AIM Triton works with Ichat AV? I know the Beta version was not working but don't know about the new triton release.
Also, has anyone tried video/audio communication between Trillian and Ichat? Does it work? Is it better than AIM?
    Thanks,
    Stefano

I have been working with the Triton on a PC and after much research (frustration), I have found this stated on the AIM support site:
    http://www.aim.com/helpfaq/startingout/getstarted.adp?aolp=#six
Q: Is AIM Triton compatible with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat?
A: : AIM Triton works seamlessly with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat. You can send and receive instant messages with your buddies using any of these clients. Certain features may not work across all clients at this time. Voice Chat with more than two people only works with other Triton users. Video Chat will work only between two Triton users at this time.
So after reading around, I believe the 5.9 will video to the iChat 3's but I haven't had the time to try. Other posts suggest this to be true. Including many by Ralph.

  • Screen sharing option no longer works after updating to iOS Maverik. I am using AIM and so is the other person who i am trying to share my screen with. .

I am using AIM and so is the other person who i am trying to share my screen with. I log into AIM with an @aol.com account. I can request to share my screen and share the other person's screen. The window will pop up on the other computer, but after clicking accept it will go back to saying that there is a request for screen share. What should I do to fix this?

    HI,
To be clear, iOS = iPhone and iPad and some iPod Touches and the Operating System they use.
Mac OS X = the Operating System Mac computers use.
Regarding the AOL account, is this actually from AOL and have the Chat/Messaging option enabled ?
Or is it a Name registered with the AIM part of AIM ?
You can have AOL as your ISP  and have an email and User ID from them.
This needs to have the ability to use the name as a Chat name enabled (or at least it used to)
AIM, which actually stands for AOL Instant Messaging has it's own registration site.
Nowadays  you register for a AIM email (although activating it for mail is another additional step).
It used to be that the bit before the @aim.com bit was the user name you used in Chat applications that could use AIM.
Previous to the current system you could in fact register just a Screen Name with them.
Apple (and a few US based ISPs) also have agreements with AIM that their (Apple, etc.)  emails are recognised as Valid AIM Screen Names.
This means those issued by  Apple ending in @mac.com, @me.com issued from the iCloud registration and @icloud.com.
(You do have to keep your password to 16 characters or less.)
From what you are saying you seem to be sure that you can see each other as On Line in your respective AIM Buddy lists ?
In Messages in both Mountain Lion and Mavericks you do not have to display the Buddy lists
(See the Window Menu plus the General Section of the Preferences to separate them)
Are you also saying that in the Video menu the option to allow Screen Shares is Enabled ?
Is it done at both ends ?
In iChat you could offer to Share your Screen with a Buddy without the option being On  (they could not ask to share yours or offer theirs).  I have not tested this in Messages.

  • .Mac account delete and msn in iChat?

    Hello
A while back I created a .Mac account through iChat now I don't use it at all. Is there a way to delete this? Also I was wondering is there any other way besides psi jabber to use msn in iChat? Thanks.
    jill
    null

    Hi,
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts highlight the unwanted account then use the - button at the bottom.
    This deletes it from iChat.
The blurb on MobileMe Terms of Use does say that you can notify Apple about having a name deleted at their end. (All @Mac.com things seem to point to MobileMe on this matter)
    However there is no link.
I even asked the Hosts here at Discussions and they said they would look in to it but other than that I got no new information.
So on this front you can delete it from iChat but there seems to be no way to get Apple to delete it.
On the MSN through iChat. There is no way other than using a Third Party App to be able to Register with the required Transport.
Psi is one such Third Party App.
In fact doing a Google search It is the only listed on the first page.
Adium and ProteusX will allow you to set up Jabber, AIM and MSN Buddies in the same list (Multi-Service apps) but only for text Chatting.

  • HT2515 Must i have an AIM account to access ichat?

Here's the thing.. I have a valid me.com id. and everytime i try to use iChat, it keeps asking me for an AIM account password.. So i tried to sign up but the problem is that it doesnt recognize my zip code.. Any help?

    Hi,
An Apple ID ending in @mac.com and @me.com are also valid AIM Screen Names.
In iChat 6 you go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
IN here should be a list with at least Bonjour in it ( and anything you set up in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars)
As it is iChat 6 it will accept an iCloud Issued @me.com name.  (these are not accepted by earlier versions - iChat 6 logs in to AIM and to me.com  the extra me.com login allows AIM to "read" the password and earlier version don't do this)
The Password has to be 16 characters or less as this is the Limit at the AIM servers  so you may have to shorten your password.
You can do this via the iForgot portal.
If you wanted an AIM name as well then I believe this Portal/page does not require a Zip code.
To add new Accounts/Screen Name in iChat use the + button at the bottom of that list.
In the new pane you change the top item (its becomes a  Drop down) tio the Account type you want to Add.
(In Messages Beta all names that login to the AIM Server are added under "AIM" And I can't remember what iChat 6 had)
Only add the password if you are confident no-one has access to your computer  (it will ask you each time you login if it is not there)
If it is there iChat will call on it from the Keychain where it is stored.

  • AIM and .mac Video

    Hi-
If both users are on macs with isights but one is AIM and the other is .mac does that matter?
    Thanks

Both AIM and dot Mac names work equally well.
The only exception is that both MUST use paid dot Mac account names if you want to do encrypted chat with iChat AV 3.
