AIM - connection with host unexpectedly lost

When I am using my school's wireless internet, I can log onto iChat for about a minute, and then it logs off and says "Lost Connection with AIM. The connection with the host was unexpectedly lost."
If I stay on the iChat window it stays logged on, but if I bring another application to the front of the screen it eventually logs off.
I also cannot use video chat.
I found a similar thread that said to use port 443, which I am currently using.
It does the same thing even if I am logged in to my .mac account. However, Adium works and everything works fine when I am at home or somewhere else. As far as I know, my proxy information for my school's wireless is correctly entered in.

Hi,
Welcome to the  Discussion Pages
iChat is very sensitive to Proxies.
In fact I would say it does not like them at all based on the posts in these forums. Many people report they can not get it to work with a proxy whether it is listed in the iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings or in the System Preferences > Network.
I don not use Proxies and still find at some points iChat does not seem to be able to stay logged in.
I never use another client long enough to provide a comparison.
iChat gets constant feedback from the AIM servers to keep the Buddy List updated. More so than a Minute check setting by Mail - so I can not see it is any time-out limit on the proxy.
Isn't iChat using port 1080 for the Proxy ? (or whatever your Proxy uses )

  • "connection to host unexpectedly lost"

what does this mean and how do i fix it? i created an AIM account, and this is what happens when i try to log on to ichat using AIM...please help?

i'm really not an expert with iChat or Macs in general but that same thing was happening to me. all i did is i opened ichat and then up at the top i clicked on iChat>Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings. under "server settings" it should list the server and port. i think the default port is 5190. i just typed in 443 as the new port # and it worked fine. now you can't change it while AIM is running. so you'll have to click offline and then change it. i hope that makes sense. hopefully it'll work.

  • Could not connect to AIM, connection to host lost

My family is having this issue intermittently on two laptops: MacBook Pro and my daughter's new Macbook. She is using a AIM account and I am using my .Mac account.
Very frustrating since we are using this to keep in touch as she starts college this fall.
The problem does not seem to be network consistent (tried different network locations, repair permissions, etc.)
    Help!
(sorry for the cross post, but the other post was included in a thread that was marked as 'question answered')

I'm kinda having a similar problem at my college, the AOL server will just disconnect me. I can be in the middle of a chat, or not, just all of a sudden my status goes to Disconnected. Sometimes I can reconnect immediately, other times it takes several trys os connecting and disconnecting before I can get it to get my buddy list. Also, sometimes I'll go online, but it won't pull my buddylist info, so I need to manually disconnect and reconnect so it can load my list. This is very annoying because it's done it MANY times when I'm talking to friends, and then I need to hurry to reconnect. It's not the internet connection because I'm using a etherneted MacBook Pro and can still load webpages or videos just fine as iChat is spazzing.
I've changed my port number to 443, so we'll see how this goes.
    An help is greatly appreciated.

  • SPN - SMB connection with Host A record with Kerberos Auth

I want to connect to a Share \\originalservername\share but I want to use a different hostname,
It will be a new host (A record) added to the DNS it is not going to be a CNAME.
Do I still have to set SPN for this Host A record? If so, would it be as
    setspn -r newhost
Or would it be something like:
    setspn -a host/newhost originalservername
If it is not required could you explain why?
I want to use Kerberos authentication not NTLM

    Hiya,
I prefer using the setspn -s for registrating spn's, as it checks for duplicates.
    So in your case it would be;
    setspn -s host/<new name> <originalservername>
    setspn -s host/<new name>.<domain> <originalservername>
    example:
    setspn -s host/server1 server99
    setspn -s host/server1.contoso.com server99
You need an SPN registrered in order to use Kerberos, therefore it is required.

  • Connection with firewire decks lost and kernel panics

    Hi all,
I have just started to experience an odd issue.
My Mac Pro is having issues with seeing any firewire deck. I regularly use a DV camcorder and a ADVC-300 for my imports and never have any issues. In the last three days both devices are suddenly dropped whilst importing footage. At first I wondered if is was something to do with the recent update. However, I tried iMovie and it couldn't see either device. Once FCP can't see a device the only way to fix it is to restart the Mac.
I'm wondering if it could be hardware related as I have had 2 Kernel panics in as many days. I have reset the P & V ram, run disk utility but no improvement. I am about to run a hardware test also.
    Does anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks

Make & model of the DV camcorder?
Assuming the camcorder has a firewire output, are you saying you have both devices connected at the same time? If so, try the camcorder by itself. Then, open System Profiler (/Applications/Utilties/), look in the Firewire section and see if the computer is seeing it. We'll go from there.
J S is right about the FW cable, though - troubleshooting involves swapping out parts and devices one at a time to narrow down the search for a culprit. If the computer is NOT seeing the devices, then move on to swapping out stuff.
But before doing that, try the Guinness Solution: Power everything down and disconnect the power cable and the FW cable(s) from the Mac Pro. Leave it that way while you enjoy an adult beverage. After 15 minutes or so, plug everything back in, power up, and try it.
There's an electronic breaker in the circuitry on the logicboard in the Firewire bus path. If it senses an overload, it will activate. Disconnecting all power from it for a few minutes allows it to reset.

  • "The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost" Cannot log into AIM

Every time I try to log into ichat, using AIM service I get this message...
The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost.
However, I can log onto ichat on my other mac. (macbook) And I can access AIM from AIM program on my windows computer....
Everything in preferences is configured right...Can anyone shed some light onto this?
    thanks,
    Joel

I have this problem, using ichat only (not using aim directly) and posted before in another thread with essentially the same name as this one. I tried all the solutions offered and none worked. BUT I did "solve" my problem. Here's how:
Solution number 1) I connected my macbook via an ethernet connection directly to my cable modem. No other changes at all, no further problems, was able to use ALL features of ichat immediately and quite well (audio and video).
Solution number 2) Since we have several computers at home, we must use a wireless router, a Netgear router. If I connect to the router (which then connects to the cable modem), ichat does not work, and I get the exact message as in this subject line. Going to the Netgear router settings (changing nothing on my macbook), I changed ONE thing only: I disabled the SPI firewall. Then, no problem using ichat to chat, but I still can't use audio or video features.
Hope this helps. For me, it diagnosed the problem with using basic ichat: the SPI firewall on the router. Also, the audio/video problem is a router problem too, which I do not yet know how to fix.
Since I am timid and fearful, I do not want to leave the SPI firewall permanently disabled.

  • The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost. AIM

I am trying to connect to AIM via iChat in Mac OS X Tiger. Everytime I try to connect it shows my buddy list for about 1-2 seconds and then says, "The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost." I don't have aim connected on this computer or any other computer on the network when I try. Any help or recommendations are appreciated.
    Thanks

  • "Lost connection with AIM" error message

    Hi all,
I've been a long-time iChat user — I've had very few problems, but now, at home, whenever I've been connected for about 10-15mins, iChat just disconnects with the simple iChat Connect Alert that the app has "Lost connection with AIM. The connection with the host was unexpectedly lost."
My Buddy List collapses to a "disconnected" header and I diappear from my Buddies' buddy lists. If I'm in the middle of a chat (video, audio or text), the chat continues uninterrupted, but I still disappear from people's lists as if I'd disconnected manually. Weird.
The net result is that I have to keep checking to see if I'm connected and then reconnecting all the time. A real pain in the proverbial.
It only happens at the house. My laptop doesn't disconnect if I'm at the office, for instance.
I have cable, coming in to Netgear 814v2 router; out to an 8-port gigabit switch, which then feeds my three main machines. All via ethernet cabling.
All machines have the same problem described above.
I've made the usual Quicktime setting changes.
I've listed the necessary ports in my Mac firewall settings (even though the firewall is turned off).
Each machine has a dedicated IP issued by the router (10.0.0.2 thru 10.0.0.5)
The router firmware is up to date.
What else is there?! I have no problems initiating or joining any sort of chat with my buddies around the world. I have excellent bandwidth. My internet and email are never interrupted 24/7.
Can someone help me? Pretty please?

    Hi
Try this log on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190
Go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab

  • Netgear + "The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost"

I have an 802.11g Netgear router. I just got it, previously I had the exact same router, but 1 "version" behind.. aka it was gray and this one is white, but everything else SEEMS identical.
Everytime I try to connect to iChat now, I get the message:
    "Lost connection with AIM
The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost."
My buddy list starts to come up, that message appears, the buddy list closes, and I'm screwed.
I am set to the DMZ. I am using port 5190, but 5191 and other ports work.. but I cannot use audio or video chatting. My client shows up as "not capable" of audio or video (MBP so I'm capable of both, and did both before this new router).
Help is appreciated, and I will gladly hand out cookies to anyone who can help.

  • I can no longer log into my ichat linked to my gmail.  right after opening up ichat, receive the following message:  lost connection with jabber.  the server has unexpectedly disconnected.

i can no longer log into my ichat linked to my gmail.  right after opening up ichat, receive the following message:  lost connection with jabber.  the server has unexpectedly disconnected.  how to troubleshoot?  thanks.

    Hi,
There can be many reasons why the Login is "up the creek".
Any break in the network at your end whilst logged in will cause  an issue.
A sort of discrepancy between what iChat thinks the state should be and what the server thinks.
If they don't agree the server will refuse to accept.
A Crash at the server end which does not log you out properly will also do it.
Any file at any time can be come corrupted.
Luckily with the iChat .plists they are recreated if removed with an iChat Restart.
If it were AIM you can also get your Account Suspended  and this will not log you in.
(It tends to happen from Chat rooms where people notify AIM about bad behaviour (as they see it) and you have to apply to get Un-suspended).
Most of the big IM services use multiple servers.
Sometimes these go out of Sync.
In the case of AIM this happens when they remove Old unused Screen Names from people's Buddy List prior to making them available for re-registration.  I am not sure if this happens at Google.
You seem to be talking about an account that has worked at Work and having new computer at home.
As I mentioned the Priority thing you have not said that it has coincided with the new computer logging in  (this will kick the work Computer out of Google whether you are logged in  on the Web Mail page or in iChat)
IN addition to that iChat stays partially logged in for Off Line IMs
This is done in the background by a support app called iChatAgent
If your Computer is ON but ichat is not started people can still send you Messages.
Instead of saving these on the server until you login iChat will start up.
Depending if the home Mac is effecting the Work Login it may be holding sway over your Login.
Using your girlfriend's login may have booted her Off Line where she normally uses the name/login.
The AIM Side can be specifically set to allow Multiple Logins and therefore NOT allow them.  If this happens you get a warning and messages to do something about it.
You do not get these in any Jabber or Google Login as the Priority setting is supposed to take care of it.
If the Login works at the Web Mail Login and on one computer then the .plist on the work computer is the most likely issue.
There is a small chance that a Corrupt Buddy Pic (Home Folder/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat/Pictures) may be the cause.
Set this folder to icon view and also use the Finder's View Menu > Show View Options and select icon view.
This should show all pics as their icon.
    Check that all display properly.
At this point I would try a COMBO version update install of the last Update you did over what you have.
This often corrects hard to trace things
    The 10.5.8 COMBO is here

    Ok,
Do you have individual wall sockets ?
Do you have a router in the room ?
IS your Wireless card set up for Interference Robustness ?

    Hi Irobin,
I am puzzled by this at the moment.
Deleting the .plist file would normally sort this.
Can you create a test Mac User account on your Mac.
Set up iChat with exactly the same Screen name in this new account.
    Does this work ?
You will only see the screen names unless you export the other (Mac Account) Address Book details and import them into this account's one. This can be done though the Backup option the Address Bok has.

    Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.
