AIM/Gaim/Adium/etc compatible aliases in iChat?

Is it possible to have user-set aliases in iChat that are compatible with the aliases that are used by other IM clients, such as Adium and Gaim?
I ask this because I have made heavy use of those aliases. On my Linux system, in Gaim, everyone had their own alias set. On my Windows PC, Gaim/Trillian/etc display those aliases. On my Mac, Adium displays those aliases that were set, but iChat doesn't.
Is there a way to have it display those aliases, without going though every user on the list and adding them to the Address Book? (Which would cause a lot of clutter)
Thanks.

Hi,
iChat in all it's A/V Versions will Video chat to AIM 5.5 and AIM 5.9 (Now called the Classic AIM) as they use the same Video and Audio Codecs.
When I downloaded AIM 6.1 to my Boot Camp version of Windows it will run with iChat 3 and 4.
I have not tried AIM 6.5 or AIM 6.8 as the AIM web site has had notices about both Not working the AIM 5.5, 5.9 or other Client such as iChat(for Macs) And Trillian (for the PC)
I went to use my Link to the Info on what AIM now call "Real Time" and the notice has been taken down (you now get this if you Search for Real Time)
The last notice I read implied that all AIM 6.x versions used Real Time.
One other note AIM 5.9 which is still downloadable does not work in Vista.
Having said all that about 20% of the people who have posted about AIM 6.1 or higher do report it will work with some PC to Mac connections.
Allowing the application used on the PC (In fact any non microsoft app) through the Windows Firewall after XP Service Pack 2's Update is important See here
If I was doing PC to Mac Video I would use Mebeam It is a Web Browser based option. Creating a room creates your own Page within the site. You give this URL to your Buddy and then enter it in their Web Browser. Both parties will see the Flash Control that needs setting to Allow for the camera and Mic to be accessed by the Web Browser.
I hope this helps somewhat.

  • AIM links: Adium X launching instead of iChat.  How do I change?

When I click on AIM links within a web page, my Adium X client launches as the default application rather than iChat. I would like iChat to be my default AIM client. I have looked in both applications preferences but I don't see any such option to set as a default. Any ideas on how to make iChat the default application once again?
    Thanks,
    Scott
    15 AL PB 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Scott,
You could use Internet Explorer to change this option, but I prefer RCDefaultApp because it's has numerous features.
Change the aim: protocol to point to the application iChat instead of Adium once you've installed the freeware.
    Hope this helps!

  • AIM 4 Mac/Windows (Triton Version), No iChat 4 now (I want Video)

Hello: I have a group of Windows XP users (Family) who don't mind installing a specific Program into their computer for the sole purpose of On-Line Video Chatting with me.
Does anybody have experience with AIM for Mac (Triton Version), Video communicating with a Windows user using AIM for Windows (Triton Version), and leaving iChat out of the equation (until it's more compatible) ?
I just want to know if it's less problematic to stick with one Company (server) Thanks, MLR

    HI MRL,
My FAQ has nothing but the same info Niel gave you.
Also note the Link to AIM 5.9 is wrong (out of date) in that FAQ which might lead to confusion.
AIM 5.9 (This link) or Trillian.
NOT AIM/AOL's new (beta) Triton (Which is where the out of date link goes).

  • Mac Pro Running Windows XP in Bootcamp with AIM 6.5 Can't Connect to iChat

I'm running Windows XP on my Mac Pro under Bootcamp. The Windows firewall is turned off (I'm running McAfee, and using it's firewall).
I am trying to talk to a friend who is using iChat on a Mac - I am using AIM 6.5 on my Mac running Windows. The connection fails as soon as iChat attempts to answer.
    Mac OS 10.4.10
    Bootcamp 1.4 (beta)
    Windows XP
    McAfee 7.2
    iChat 3.1.8
    Airport Express
I have set up McAfee to allow TCP and UDP connections over ports 2869 (TCP) and 1900 (UDP).
I have also disabled McAfee, and tried to use the Windows firewall settings discussed frequently in this forum (with appropriate exceptions). This also fails.
I have also tried to doing this under my Mac OS X bootup running PARALLELS. This worked once, but I have not been able to repeat it (McAfee was running when it worked).
iChat works great on my Mac under OS X. This is only a problem in Windows XP under Bootcamp.
I cannot connect to appleu3test01 either (under Bootcamp with XP). I can connect to appleu3test01 no problem running iChat on my Mac.
Might this be a Bootcamp related problem? Can anyone else test this for me (i.e. can someone try to use AIM 6.5 from Windows XP under Bootcamp)???
    Thanks!

    Hi Ralph,
{quote}If the Firewall was On I would ask if you had set it up as an Exception
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service{quote}
Yes, this is what I meant by,
    {quote}I have also disabled McAfee, and tried to use the Windows firewall settings discussed frequently in this forum (with appropriate exceptions). This also fails.{quote}
I've noticed that you've posted solutions frequently in this forum. I read your posts, and visited your website. Its great information ... thanks for posting it! However, it didn't help me to resolve this particular problem.
    You asked,
    {quote}The question now becomes have you allowed it through McAfee ?{quote}
I tried resolving the problem with McAfee "ON" and "OFF". When it was "OFF" I Set the Windows firewall up per your instructions. Unfortunately, it didn't help. And yes, this includes setting up the "exceptions."
I don't think the problem is with McAfee.
    You stated,
    {quote}Having said that and seeing you have tried combos around this issue I would have to point out the AIM site says AIM 6.5 will only Video with other AIM applications. It has been reported here though that it does work with iChat{quote}
Yes, I have read that AIM 6.5 will communicate with iChat on several forums. Lots of people appear to have this working. I wish to use iChat on my Mac to communicate with friends running Windows XP (or Vista) using AIM 6.5. I like iChat.
    Finally, you asked,
    {quote}Next I would have to ask if the modem or router is allowing the AIM application ?{quote}
This is a very good question. I have not been able to test this. I couldn't find an AIM "test" address to use (like Apple's appleu3test01). Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help Ralph. This configuration is a little bit unusual, but it should work. I think the problem might be with the AIM configuration as you've suggested. I will continue to troubleshoot and report any findings here.

  • AIM camera is black when connected to iChat

    iMac G5 running osX.4.3
    isight
    ichat (3.1)
I am trying to do a one way chat to a buddy on AIM (pc - xp pro) and the camera says its connected but I just get a black screen. I am able to connect from one mac to another and view the video through ichat - i just can't seem to connect ichat to aim. I have tried trillian pro on the PC and that works momentarily and then crashes - just the video portion - the audio will continue to operate. I would really just like to get one or the other connected so the pc can view the video from the isight on the mac. Thanks

Ok, I think I had checked all of those options originally. I have tuned the audio/video however on the pc, however, the pc is not using a camera - only trying to view the mac user. The preview on the mac is visible and says its connected, appears to be fine. Its the incoming video on the pc that is black (also says its connecting and then connected but not picture). I was under the impression that both users did not need a camera, the mac user just wouldn't be able to view the pc user, just a one way video connection - is this not correct?
There might be something I am missing, I am on XP but I don't have a "security center" under the control panel so I can't figure out how to check the sp2 settings, although I am almost positive that I don't have sp2 patch on the pc, there was a conflict with that and some programs at work. Would this make a difference?
I have another firewall on the computer but this has been temporarily turned off as I was seeing if that was the issue.

  • My brother can see and hear me (AIM), I cannot see or hear him (iChat).

So I had a post a few days ago about the communication issues with iChat to AIM. Got a great response and info from Rj in WI (thanks a bunch) but still having problems. The other day my brother and I were able to establish an audio connection but not video. He downloaded the latest version of AIM (5.9, not sure if it is the Triton version) Now he can SEE and HEAR me, but all I see and hear is myself. Regardless if I invite him or he invites me same thing. I have a wireless connection, he is hard wired. Anyone have any pointers or had this issue. The solution might have already been pointed out to me but I have not been successful. Seriously entertaining the idea of Sightspeed but I have iChat and want to use it for what it was created for.

I occassionaly will have the same issue connecting to fellow mac users. Usually quitting iChat and restarting, then re-initating the conference will solve the issue.
He should be using AIM 5.9, Tritan currently does not support iChatAV.
I have a wireless connection and don't use Sightspeed and don't have any issues.
Are you able to successfully conduct 2 way video chats to fellow mac users that don't have any connection problems?
Lastly, I'd be willing to test with the PC user, just let me know!
Let us know how it goes.

  • AIM icon in dock pixelated when using iChat?

I use iChat instead of AIM for its ease of use and design. However, the little AIM icon "running guy" in my dock gets pixelated when I drag my mouse over it. I have my dock magnification on.
No other program does this except AIM. The iChat icon is fine and magnifies perfectly, it's just the little running guy. The image is of poor quality I guess but it's weird that it's only that icon.
Anyone who why other than it's a low quality image?
Macbook, iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

AIM (not iChatAV) hasn't been updated for quite awhile. I'm not sure if that is the issue, but may be related.
iChatAV is the preferred messagner application and the most recent updated.

  • Do we need AIM accounts if both of us have ichat?

    Hi
I have a Macbook pro and my friend just bought a macbook. We are trying to video chat using ichat but I am wondering if we need to use AIM accounts given we both have ichat?
Also when she sends me an invitation to video chat and I accept all goes well but I can't send her an invitation to chat. When I do I just get an error message about there being a connection problem.
    Any one able to help?
    Cheers

Next time you get an error message as a result of you sending the invitation, save the first part of your error log, as described/identified here, and post the pertinent portion of the log here.

  • IM Apps (MSN, Adium etc) Not Logging In via Wifi

I cant get MSN or Adium to login via WiFi from my MBP. If I plug an Ethernet cable from teh Netgear router to the Mac, it works fine.
Strange thing...if I use MSN on Windows with Parallels on my Mac it does work !
Anyone got any ideas ? I tried turning the Leopard firewall on and off...
If I turn off WPA on the router, it connects. But if I enable security on the router, it doesnt.

The applications you mentioned require a data plan with your wireless provider. Accessing them via a Wi-Fi is not supported.

Internet works fine, which is how I'm posting this.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

Problem solved, turns out PeerGuardian was screwing it up.
Removed it, but it takes a Restart of the Mac to make Messenger work again.
    Works seamlessly

  • Adding diffrent colored strings to a JTextArea

I writing a program that uses a messaging window like AIM, GAIM, Trilian etc that uses two JTextarea's to write and read the text. Thus far I cannot figure out how to add strings of diffrent colors to the JTextarea used for writing. The tutorials only explain how to set the font and color of typed text, not text i want to take form the write pane and add it to the read pane. Any ideas?

    Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

  • Finaly: AIM (win) video-compatible to ichat

    Great news ....
Finaly AIM with it´s latest windows client (6.1.31.1) is videochat-compatible to our ichat since osx is updated to 10.4.9. I tested it with several buddies, all using latest aim windows client. I also made some tests inside my network (from iMac to pc and visa versa) ... what can I say: no problems at all anymore, no more aim 5.9 and stamp-like videos on windows-side.
    Greetings

    Hi Martin,
AIM 5.9 does seem to be more reliable for thaose people it works for in that it does allow calls both ways.
I am not sure that iChat is the one that has been one step behind. I would point to the fact the AIM still have a download page for it.
AIM and Apple did a deal to allow iChat to use the AIM service.
In the meatime AIM have brought out the Beta Trillian and then AIM 6.0.
As iChat is an AIM client it seems they have relied on AIM 5.9 being out there to say that agreement with Clients were being honoured.
James is also right that other solutions that are out there while not ebing as smooth or as pretty as iChat/AIM connection do actually work and are easier to set uo that the AIM - iChat link.
My experience with AIM 6.1.32.1 running on XP on my MacBook Pro is that it will only really connect to 10.4.9 on my G4/1Ghz Dual.
It will not even get a response on 10.3.9 (panther) and 10.4.8 is extremely hit and miss as to whether an invite will even appear and always times out after that.
I stayed around the iChat boards as I wanted to understand all the wquirks about how this works.
James porports another view that time is money and solutions need to take that in to consideration. It is something I don't always take account of myself when making an answer as I tend to answer with the belief that someone wants to make it work the way it says it does on the tin.
If your car is not working and you don't have time to fix it before work the Bus maybe a reasonable option.
Look how long it has taken Apple to get USB cams into iChat despite having Built-in USB cams in the Intels.
In this case Thinking Differently is not always an Apple Answer.
What that does say is that more work needs to be done.

  • Ichat/aim/adium problems

when i sign in to ichat, aim, and adium, i stay logged in for a little while, but then it signs me off and doesn't tell me that i've been kicked off. it looks like i'm online but none of my friends can see me. there is a lag like this for a couple of minutes and then it finally tells me that the connection timed out if i try typing another message. this is very frustrating. i've tried reinstalling everything and it doesn't help. i have also tried changing the aim port to 443. does anyone have any insight?

    Hi,
Try turning Off the SSL option in iChat  (And in Adium if it has it).
iChat needs this manually reset if the Connection is lost to the SSL server at AIM  (It also goes down more frequently than the regular server).

  • AIM Triton - Not compatable with iChat for Audio/Video

    **From MacDailyNews** http://www.macdailynews.com
AOL's new AOL Instant Messenger 'Triton' (free for Windows 2000 and XP at http://www.aim.com/ ) update is now available. "Triton is more marketing-driven than ever, but this version's audio-chat feature shuts out one popular AIM-compatible program, Apple's iChat AV, and it doesn't allow video-conferencing with any other AIM software," Rob Pegoraro writes for The Washington Post. "More ads, less compatible: Does that sound appealing?"
"Text chats between Triton, earlier AIM releases and two third-party programs -- iChat AV, released with AOL's support, and the independently developed, open-source Gaim -- went fine. But Triton makes enough changes to voice chatting to prevent any audio exchanges with iChat AV, and its new video software doesn't work with any other AIM-compatible software," Pegoraro reports. "Fortunately, you don't have to run AIM to use the AIM network. For basic text chats and file transfers, non-AOL programs such as Gaim, Trillian and iChat provide the same utility without any of the ads."

    HI Rj,
As Triton got to it's current version as a Beta and then without any apparent changes become the item on the AIM latest page link http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/latestwin.adp I would presume it is not a fully functional item yet.
Particularly as AIM 5.9 is still available here http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/otherwin.adp?aolp=
As it is market driven hopefully it will catch up with AIM 5.9 on the connectivity front and lose or at least gain the ability to block unwanted ads.
I think we have a while to go with this one before suggesting people swap to Triton.
    Ralph
