Aim goes freaky like with ichat

So i have a problem:
I just got a new computer with leopard on it. The first 3 days were awesome on ichat, both my AIM and ichat worked fine.... but both my AIM and ICHAT log me on but no one is online, even though I know some people are on. I logged on to my sisters AIM account and it worked fine. Also with my AIM if i leave it on when it shows no one is online, it will freak out, log me off, and automaticly try to log me back on until it will lock the account for a bit, and i did turn off the automatic sign on in the preferences and it still happens....
HELP! Please what do i do?

Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443.
Log back in again.

  • AIM Triton - Not compatable with iChat for Audio/Video

    **From MacDailyNews** http://www.macdailynews.com
AOL's new AOL Instant Messenger 'Triton' (free for Windows 2000 and XP at http://www.aim.com/ ) update is now available. "Triton is more marketing-driven than ever, but this version's audio-chat feature shuts out one popular AIM-compatible program, Apple's iChat AV, and it doesn't allow video-conferencing with any other AIM software," Rob Pegoraro writes for The Washington Post. "More ads, less compatible: Does that sound appealing?"
"Text chats between Triton, earlier AIM releases and two third-party programs -- iChat AV, released with AOL's support, and the independently developed, open-source Gaim -- went fine. But Triton makes enough changes to voice chatting to prevent any audio exchanges with iChat AV, and its new video software doesn't work with any other AIM-compatible software," Pegoraro reports. "Fortunately, you don't have to run AIM to use the AIM network. For basic text chats and file transfers, non-AOL programs such as Gaim, Trillian and iChat provide the same utility without any of the ads."

    HI Rj,
As Triton got to it's current version as a Beta and then without any apparent changes become the item on the AIM latest page link http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/latestwin.adp I would presume it is not a fully functional item yet.
Particularly as AIM 5.9 is still available here http://www.aim.com/getaim/win/otherwin.adp?aolp=
As it is market driven hopefully it will catch up with AIM 5.9 on the connectivity front and lose or at least gain the ability to block unwanted ads.
I think we have a while to go with this one before suggesting people swap to Triton.

  • Can video chat with Aim users on a PC but not with Ichat users on Mac!

    Hello
I am having the odd problem of being able to video chat with someone when they are using their pc running aim, but I cant chat with the same person when he on his Mac!
I am running as DMZ behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.
The problem is on my side because I cant chat with the test accounts either.
I tried this after bothe forwarding and triggering all the ports that were suggested.
    I am stumped!

    Hi Lullah,
This is going to be down to the Staelite connection.
It has what is called latency.
This adds an unexceptable delay in the passing of data at the start of the connection.
Very few people have reported success.
The things you can try are to fool the link into passing more intense data prior to starting a chat.
If you have web pages try uploading a Pic of larger file to the site.
Just as this finishes start up iChat
You should also check that System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab has the speed to match you download set.
Hopefully (But no reported success) you may get iChat to see more bandwidth as you have just had the modem busy.
Following the launch of iChat with a video chat request may be able to get that bandwidth.
Realistically the 128 k upload even if you were getting close to it is very tight to the lowest point Apple say will work.
Speed testing a 128 k service i likely to get a result of about 80% of the figure (102k) iChat will use about 80 % of what is left (you are down to about 83K). You are now below the 100k min.
With regards to your LAN there are several things that may help if not set up already.
Only have one device doing DHCP. The way routers work as compared to modems is that they pass all routing data though to the computers.
This means the computers can be sitting in two subnets (1) from Modem to computer via router and (2) from Router. The computer can only display one of these IP addresses but can get confuse info regarding iChat.
Do not use Port Forwarding or Port triggering, twice or together on the LAN. iCHAT does not like two lots of NAT (bath are forms of Network Address Translation [NAT]).
    Use UPnP where you can.
IF you are trying to test this yur Mac to your PC you ahve to allow for the fact that the modem is handling two Video chats in effect. This means you need twice the minimum bandwidth (let alone the fact that ichat to AIM semms to like 50% more than Mac to Mac contacts.
Sorry to be the bearer of so much doom and gloom.

  • Are apple going to do anything with ICHAT AV3???

I think many people have had cause to search the web to find answers to why ICHAT AV3 does not work with AIM. As was the case under Panther and ICHAT. I have looked at these pages with great interest hoping to see an apple solution to these problems. But not a peep.
It is thanks to people like Ralph Johns and others that have offered very detailed technical advice and assitance on how to resolve the problems much better quality than you will find from Apple support. But am afraid for most non technical morons this is far too complicated for us to deal with. In this era of plug and play we should not be expected to become network experts.
I for one have reverted to a laptop running MSN and find it much easier unless I wish to talk to MAC only users, then it is really hit and miss whether or not it works, When I use an aim account. Sad fact of life MAC to MAC is great, but unfortunately we are the minority in the world.
In the past few weeks I have been travelling in Australia and have encountered no fewer than 5 MAC users who have bought Isights, and started using ICHAT and have run into exactly the same issues. Needless to say when I point them to these discussion pages - there are cries of disbelief.
The other major irritation is that if you contact Apple support regarding the issues you get a 10 minute story on how they do not support AIM???? Is very helpul.
So if any one from Apple reads this forum - do you think there will be a solution to hand?????

    Hi Peter.
Welcome to the Apple Dicussion Pages
Some very salient points you make here.
However many people seem to think that a new application will work the same way and email and we browsing do, which have been around for years. I sure there was a time when people new to the intenet in it's infancy doubted it would catch on. I am sure those people, when used to the internet, found email programes just as difficult, as people now find setting up iChat, with all the new fangled POP or IMAP servers.
Apple, as it usually does, has aimed (pun intended) high with this application and have brought it from a text based IM chat tools to what it is today in just over two years.
Having said that they have decided to use the AIM servers to do this on. That lead me to this:
The other major irritation is that if you contact Apple support regarding the issues you get a 10 minute story on how they do not support AIM???? Is very helpul.
The Moderators (Hosts) of these boards do read the posts for Ideas and common problems But sometimes using http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html also can help. Whichever method you rely on to get the message across you will not get a direct reply, and I appreciate this is not very satisfying.
The essesence of why you should set up your home network so that is does not have overlapping subnets is easy to describe. The how this is done with the myriad of devices out there is a litlle nore difficult.
In time iChat and other IM applications may become more tolerant of how people just plug modems and routers together in default DHCP server mode.
In the meantime if you want to stay near the front of this technology, you will have to change your thinking to that of the pioneers of the internet.

  • Cannot have audio with iChat and AIM

    Hi,
I am trying to use iChat with friends using AIM (on PC).
But I have never been able to start an audio session with someone (exchange of text messages is Ok).
The "button" with the phone remains grey (not active). So I cannot start an audio session after contact selection).
My microphone is Ok (Audio is Ok with other tool like Skype).
Also, in the contact list, I dont see any audio logo in front of their names, even if they are online (and then able to have text chats).
When PC/AIM friends want to start an audio session with me, they get the following message "[email protected] is not accepting Talk invitations or does not support the Talk feature."
    What can I do ?
More details on my configuration :
I have an eMac with MAC OS X 10.3.9 and iChat 2.1(v153)
I am using the micro integrated somewhere in the computer.
    In networking system preferences,
the Mas OS firewall is not activated (should be activated with appropriate ports ?)
and no service is activated (some services should be activated ?).
    Can you help ?
I would like to do have also video with friends but I would like to be able to do audio before !
When I see all problems in the iChat discussion, I am a little bit afraid ...
Does iChat 3 could be better ?
    Thanks
    Gerard Morisset
    email : [email protected]

    Hi Gérard,
Welcome to the Apple Dicussion Pages
    See this FAQ
You will see it says (near the bottom ) that Audio only chats can not be done from AIM (on a PC) to iChat.
Trillian Basic does allow Audio Chats from PCs to Mac usiing the same AIM servers (Smae names will work). They also do a Pro version that will do Video as well (costs $25).
AIM are also working on Triton which is supposed to add this feature. (See link under the yellow DONWLOAD Now button).
Your friend can download a beta of this if he wishes but it is a very early version.

  • Using AIM with ichat

Im trying to use AIM through Ichat and it doesn't seem to be working? can i just install AIM and use it with the Ichat, because that isnt working either...i tried installing aim and when I double click it I get an error msg or it tries to open in Excel??

You don't need the AIM software to use iChat, just sign up for a free screen name.

  • Does the new AIM Triton work with Ichat?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if the new AIM Triton works with Ichat AV? I know the Beta version was not working but don't know about the new triton release.
Also, has anyone tried video/audio communication between Trillian and Ichat? Does it work? Is it better than AIM?
    Thanks,
    Stefano

I have been working with the Triton on a PC and after much research (frustration), I have found this stated on the AIM support site:
    http://www.aim.com/helpfaq/startingout/getstarted.adp?aolp=#six
Q: Is AIM Triton compatible with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat?
A: : AIM Triton works seamlessly with AIM 5.9, AOL 9.0 and iChat. You can send and receive instant messages with your buddies using any of these clients. Certain features may not work across all clients at this time. Voice Chat with more than two people only works with other Triton users. Video Chat will work only between two Triton users at this time.
So after reading around, I believe the 5.9 will video to the iChat 3's but I haven't had the time to try. Other posts suggest this to be true. Including many by Ralph.

  • TO ALL THOSE HAVING TROUBLE WITH ICHAT AND AIM ON MACBOOKS

I've had a lot of trouble with AIM and iChat on my new Macbook, but I believe I've figured out the answers to all the problems I and others have encountered.
Firstly, for those who's AIM continually crashes and displays the message "The application AIM unexpectedly shut down," my answer to your problem is too many sent messages. Watch the bar in the bottom left of your chat window, when it reaches red, your application will probably shut down.
Secondly, for those experiencing difficulties with iChat, it's most likely a problem with communitcation between your wireless router and your computer. Try these steps:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View, choose Sharing.
    3. Click the Firewall tab.
    4. Click New.
    5. From the Port Name pop-up menu, choose Other.
If you have a Macbook, you'll probably have a TCP Port Number Bar and a UDP Port Number Bar. Try these steps:
    1. In the TCP Port Number(s) Bar, type: 5190, 5298
    2. In the UDP Port Number(s) Bar, type: 1024-5219, 5221, 5223-65535
    3. In the Description Bar, type: iChat AV
    4. Click OK
    5. Click Start above the window with your firewall settings, and make sure the box next to iChat AV is checked
    6. Relaunch iChat
Good Luck! I hope this solves some of the problems that people have been encountering.

    Rob
My Linksys is the WAG54G, which might be different from your WRT54G. Currently, UPnP is disabled and the Router ports are a bit of a mystery, because they're forwarded to an IP address that's outside of the current DHCP Address Range! Once I got it working, I was reluctant to change it even though it looked anomalous.
The Firewall is on, with the iChat ports open that I listed in the previous post.
My two regular buddies are my sons, who both use Trillian Pro on a Windows machine. Works pretty well despite occasional freezes or garbled sound.
    Hope you get sorted soon.

  • Using a Digital Camera (like a Canon Powershot/Elph/Ixus) with iChat

    Hello
Anybody know if its possible to use a small digital camera like a Canon Powershot with video capabilites with iChat - instead of an iSight or built in camera like on the new Intel MacBooks?
    Thanks

My current camera on my G4 is a stills camera.
It is a Kodak DC4800 of some vintage now.
It has a PAL (or NTSC) TV signal that it can output.
From there I use a DV Converter to get it into iChat.
Effectively this means it depends on the Output and what you have to get it in to iChat.
If the camera can stream Video then it is better if you have a Firewire device.
If the Camera can be seen by iMovie but not iChat then try
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/ as it would then have Mac Drivers if it has a USB connector.

  • Cant send or recieve text messages with ichat

when i use my aim account to chat, i can open a chat window with a buddy but when i do i get the "typing" symbol. it looks like i am typing but im not doing anything. when i actually do send a message, my friends can receive them but the window doesnt show that i sent anything, it just looks like i am typing. my friends respond but nothing changes on my screen, just the same old typing symbol for me. any one know whats going on?

    Hi Ralph,
it is basically the same with parallels or vmware.
    Host-Only:
Means taht you communicate only with your mac on a special independent interface (this has nothing to do with your macs ethernet or airport IP / Interface) The VM can not see the Internet then. Only your Host...
    NAT:
Advantage: No need to reconfigure the VM when changing the Network or switching from Airport to Ethernet.
Disadvantage: Shares the Macs IP (but i dont see if this is really a problem ;))
    bridged:
Advantage: direct access to the 'external' network via the same Interface as the host. VM has its own IP
Disadvantage: need to reconfigure the machine when switching networks
    Hope this clarified things.
I still do not see why parallels in NAT mode should be a problem with iChat.
Is there a known problem? I really would try if this problem also exists with vmware
    Regards,
    somi

  • Podcasting interviews with iChat and Garageband -tips and then questions-

Okay, I did a search before I asked this and there have been a few scattered topics on it. Some answered my question(s) some didn't so hopefully I can consolidate some of the qestions here and tell about my own experience. This is long so be prepared:
Here are the Apple Articles on doing this:
ichat- (number of voice chats total, and specs to do it)
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat/
garageband- (number of real tracks it can take, up to 8)
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/features/recording.html
garageband- (how it records the chat(s) http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/features/ichatrecording.html
So... after finding this out I found myself in an Apple store and was able to get 2 20-inch iMac Core Duo 2's to do an audio chat and when I opened garageband and hit "new track" it AUTOMATICALLY popped up two tracks, one for each speaker (or chat), myself and my friend, on the other 20 inch. On my friends iMac, he hit "new podcast track" and the same thing happened for him, 2 tracks, 2 speakers (or chats, if you will) Now there was a bit of a feedback loop because we were right next to each other, but just by doing it in the store we proved to ourselves it could be done. Also we used the Bonjour sharing rather then logging-in with our AIM or .Mac accounts in iChat.
Fast forward to last night, while on iChat using my AIM account (NOT.mac) I contacted a friend about trying this. He was on a PC with AIM and a mic. I invited him 4 times and the invite never worked, it timed out or was not accepted. We both chacked out anti-virus and firewall setting (him anti-virus, me firewall) and still got nothing, but we did find a support article on it- http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208 .
Then HE sent the invite and it worked. Great, we were chatting no problem. So I open Garageband and tried to record. Only one chat track. It has both of our voices, but only one track. Tried, new track, new basic track, new podcast track, and they were all the same. They were also all chosen with the "real instrument" choice because of the input from the mic.
Now this is my set-up. For audio "in" I have a logitech USB mic going into a USB Griffin PowerWave. The PowerWave also controls my "Out" to which I have 2 crappy external speakers that I picked up free from a friend.
The reason I am using a PowerWave for "in and out" is because A- I record a lot of vinyl and analog sources into my computer and the PowerWave has the best input/output solution short of getting any M-Audio products which I'm too broke to get. And B- my Apple Pro Speakers had the prong on the jack snap off in the speaker audio out jack, leaving me with only headphones for audio out. (with the prong stuck in the speaker jack the computer will think the speakers are still plugged in and won't play via "built in audio", but anything plugged into the headphone jack will over-ride that.) The Griffin PowerWave is connected via USB and works right around all of that.
Now I do have 2 choices for "Audio in" in my sys prefs. one is the PowerWave (which I choose when recording a source like a stereo or record player) and one is the Logitech mic. I choose the logitech mic (even though it's connected to and playing THROUGH the PowerWave (the PowerWave also has USB "in") it still reads as a seperate input source. For "Out" I have built-in, and the PowerWave, I choose the PowerWave cause thats where my external speakers are connected.
So I was able to do the chat, but NOT get multiple tracks for multiple chats to work.
Here is my system configuration as well as audio configuration.
    Dual 800 MGHZ G4 quicksilver.
    896 Ram
    Cable Modem Connection (comcast)
    OS X- 10.4.8
    GB- 3.0.4 (104.7)
    iChat- 3.1.5 (v436)
    IN-
Logitech USB Mic- connected via "USB in" to Griffin PowerWave
Griffin PowerWave- connected via USB to G4
    OUT-
    Griffin PowerWave- connected via USB
External Speakers- connected to "audio OUT" on Griffin PowerWave
For anyone who doesn't know what a Griffin PowerWave is here is a link:
    http://www.welovemacs.com/3254pwrw.html
It's a BIG Step up from a iMic in terms of availible connectivity both in and out. It's about 3 years old and Griffin does not make them anymore. Most people now are using USB 2.0 or Firewire audio boxes to get multiple input and oputput connections for the Mac and various instruments.
So after all that, my question is, what could I be doing wrong? The Apple article(s) mention nothing about internal or external Mics. Is it my settings? Is it because it was done in AIM and iChat, not just 2 macs and iChat like the experiment in the store? I think I've done everything right, but still only ONE chat track somes up. Also I have done chats in Skype, as well as Ventrillo (while gaming) with this set up, so I know it works, I'm just trying to figure out how to get the multiple chat tracks. Please give me some advice. Thanks in advance.
    Keith M

    Alrighty-
I just got off the phone with Apple support. With their tech I was able to find that this DOES work with my set-up.
While I was using iChat and my AIM account, the tech and I were able to have an audio chat and have garageband record it using HIS (the tech) .mac account as well as his AIM account.
What we seemed to find out that if I want to record it, I have to be the one that initiates the chat. (which is why my friend sending the invite didn't let it work and it was recording it as one track.)
If I send the invite and the other party accepts it, I then opened Garageband, started a standard "new project" (deleated the defualt grand piano track) then chose "new track" with "real instrument" and the following message came up- "garageband is detecting and active ichat, do you want to record that chat"(paraphrased): I chose "yes" and away we went recording the chat with one track for each participant.
Not sure how many folks I can add into the chat, nor don't know if it will add new tracks on the fly. Probably not. But at least I got it working, I know it does work with AOL and .mac accounts, I guess it might have been some network issues in terms of my PC friend's anti-virus or firewall settings, or the network itself.
Anyway, keep adding to this if you want, and keep it as a resource for more people, but this does work (for now) and if ther are any more revelations about (number of participants, etc) it I'll follow up here.

  • Can you use any email account with iChat?

It appears that iChat allows you to add other other email accounts other than AOL or MobileMe but can you chat using these accounts and can you screen share etc with non MobileMe users?
Message was edited by: Peter O'Toole

    Hi,
The answer is yes but your question is wrong.
The AIM page for Registration now allows you to use any Email ID as a Screen Name.
AIM has long done this for the Apple IDs of [email protected] and the MobileMe type email IDs of [email protected]
They have also done it for other ISPs in the past as well
More recently I have had someone test with me having used a Hotmail ID in the AIM Registration process.
Jabber IDs look like email IDs and in the case of the GoogleTalk option they can be.
As long as the Screen Name works in one of your Buddy lists it will be valid And if they are an iChat user with iChat 4 or above then they will be able to Screen Share.
    NOTES:
Screen Sharing in iChat uses a Random port so any router or modem that routes need to be able to use UPnP or Port Mapping Protocol to open the ports or it will not work.

I have Messages on OS X 10.8 but my friend has iChat still so i made an AIM account to chat with her. This worked. But now i can't video chat with her. We can both send invites to video chat but the other person cannot accept/see them. All that happens is the camera turns on...

    HI,
All the Google IDs I know that work are in the form of [email protected] of [email protected]
Both these types are Google Mail IDs
I know of other names that look like [email protected] bit these are not Mail Accounts and do not work with the Google Talk servers (talk.google.com as seen in iChat Preferences > Accounts > Server settings for a gmail account name)
A random set of character sand numbers and that ending sound more like a Google Chat room rather than his ID.
