AIM & iChat

My girlfriend uses AIM I send a video request it says I'm not sending video:-( Mine says she left.

As a Non Microsoft Application it needs to be allowed through the XP Firewall if she has Service Pack 2 or higher for XP
See here
In Brief.
Go to Start > Control Panels
Open the Firewall
Click on the Exceptions Tab
Click the Add Button and then Navigate through Program files to AIM.exe application in the AOL folder (Or AIM6.exe in the AIM folder)
When back at the exceptions window also allow UPnP if the Modem or router does UPnP.
The Next stage is to allow the application through the Modem or router.
To Login it needs port 5190 (although it will default to a web Browser or Mail port that is likely to be open).
However for A/V chats it needs port 1024-5000 opened or Allowed.
The Simplest method is to use UPnP.
Next.
She needs to select the Mic and camera and link them to the App.
This is done trough a process of "Tuning"
This link is about AIM 5.5 but the info at message 570 is transferable to AIM 5.9

Having said all that you may find that using one of the Web Browser methods that use Flash (after you agree and set up the camera and Mic) may be more successful.

  • Others see when i type (AIM ichat)??

    Hi there,
I like how in AIM you can block others from seeing when you are typing...on ichat it comes up as little ellipses and the users still using AIM can see that i am typing.
Is there a way to turn this feature off? I know how to block it on bonjour, but what about blocking it from aim ichat?
    thanks!!

    Hi Beautficharde23,
I know of No way that this can be done.
Not even Chax seems to add this feature.

  • Going idle disconnects me from ANY chat service - AIM, iChat

I am using an airport extreme connection with road runner. When my computer goes into sleep mode, any chat program I am using is disconnected -- this happens with AIM, iChat, and Netscape Navigator's chat screen. As soon as I move my mouse, or touch the keyboard, and go active, AIM automatically reconnects. Any ideas on how I can remain signed into a chat service when I go into sleep mode?

The only way of keeping you logged into ichat and applications like this. IS to change your energy settings in your System preferences so that your mac doesn't go to sleep nor does your hard drive go to sleep when possible you can put your display to go to sleep at 10-15 minutes but that is it and you should be fine afterwards. Make sure that the check box for put my hard disk to sleep when possible is unchecked and you have put my computer to sleep set to never. Let me know the results. By the way in case you are worrying about keeping your mac on all the time there is no need to worry the screen is what you have to allow to sleep after 10-15 minutes of inactivity so that you prolong its life.

  • AIM/iChat compatibility (which versions?)

Would someone in the know please post a definitive reference of AIM/iChat compatible versions.
I thought AIM 5.9 was the only version that worked with iChat, now I hear 6.2, 6.5, iChat 3, iChat 4, iChat 57, etc.... I'd like to see a simple explanation of what works with what.
    Thanks

    Hi,
iChat in all it's A/V Versions will Video chat to AIM 5.5 and AIM 5.9 (Now called the Classic AIM) as they use the same Video and Audio Codecs.
When I downloaded AIM 6.1 to my Boot Camp version of Windows it will run with iChat 3 and 4.
I have not tried AIM 6.5 or AIM 6.8 as the AIM web site has had notices about both Not working the AIM 5.5, 5.9 or other Client such as iChat(for Macs) And Trillian (for the PC)
I went to use my Link to the Info on what AIM now call "Real Time" and the notice has been taken down (you now get this if you Search for Real Time)
The last notice I read implied that all AIM 6.x versions used Real Time.
One other note AIM 5.9 which is still downloadable does not work in Vista.
Having said all that about 20% of the people who have posted about AIM 6.1 or higher do report it will work with some PC to Mac connections.
Allowing the application used on the PC (In fact any non microsoft app) through the Windows Firewall after XP Service Pack 2's Update is important See here
If I was doing PC to Mac Video I would use Mebeam It is a Web Browser based option. Creating a room creates your own Page within the site. You give this URL to your Buddy and then enter it in their Web Browser. Both parties will see the Flash Control that needs setting to Allow for the camera and Mic to be accessed by the Web Browser.
    I hope this helps somewhat.

  • Suddenly can't connect to AIM/iChat.

I'm sorry if this has been asked many times, and answered many times but I can't find an answer to my problem. Please help.
Recently I am not able to connect to iChat while I am at home. When I'm at school and using their wifi, iChat works fine. After awhile, it won't connect a box comes up and says, "Could not connect to AIM. The conncection to the host was unexpectedly lost." I can still go to websites and my .mac mail seems to be working fine, it's just the iChat that isn't working. I've checked for updates and it says I have all the updates that are available. To my knowledge, I didn't change any numbers, addresses, connections or whatever to cause iChat to stop working. I don't know what it could be, or what changed all of a sudden that it stopped working.
    Thanks!

    Hey,
I'm having the same problem, too. Only, for some reason, my iChat stopped working in my dorm room at school. It was working yesterday in my dorm room and worked when I was in class, however, it stopped connecting when I tried to sign on from the dorm. I tried changing my port from 5190 to 443 and nothing happened. It either says "connecting" for a very long time or it says "The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost." I'm not sure why there is such a sudden change, however, I really need to get on iChat. I also tried using Yahoo Messenger and the same thing happened also. Any more ideas besides attempting to change the port??
    Thanks =)

  • Problem with AIM/ICHAT ....please help

I have a family member that just purchased their first Apple and need help. They have AOL as their internet provider but also want to use Ichat. If they try to open IChat it opens AOL and then they can't log in to IChat because they can't have AIM open in two different locations. (They are using Dial Up). What can they do to get around this? Thanks.

    Sam,
Have them go into iChat preferences. Click the Accounts tab at the top of the screen. Listed down the left hand side will be all the accounts that are set up. Select the one you want to be the default account (I'm guessing your .Mac account) and check the "use this account box". Then click the "allow multiple logins for this account"
    Hope that helps

  • My AIM iChat works half the time can this be the issue?

I saw that AIM allows you to use your email as your screen name. My email is through a web hosting site. For example it's like [email protected]
Half the time I open up ichate\, it says I'm online and my status says I'm available with the little green bullet. My buddy collumn has the arrow down, but theres no one under it. It looks almost as if every person is offline. Why is this happening? Can it be my web hosting email screen name thats the problem?
I think I may have ran into this issue even with my old screen name but I can't remember. Any suggestions? It feels like its starting to be the majority of the time it's not working now.
    Thanks

    Hi
Yes AIM does allow you to register any Email address.
It come about from allowing Apple @Mac.com names and later @Me.com names, as well as several other ISPs email names, to be Valid AIM Screen Names.
If you search for it there is a different Registration Screen for this.
If your Buddy List is set up to Show Groups (View menu) and you only have one Group you will only see one grey bar with the Arrow that can be turned On and Off to Display the list or Not.
If you turn Off Show Groups then there is no grey Bar.
The Grey Bar should have the Name of the Group, what is this please ?
I would also use the View Menu to turn On Show Off line Buddies (I am not sure from your description this sis what you are doing)
If you delete a Group then you lose all the Buddies that were in that Group as well.
If the group you do have is "Recent Buddies" this is a Special Group only held on the AIM servers of people you have had contact with that are not in your Buddy List.
In iChat 4 and 5 you can turn Off the Display of this Group in the iChat Preferences > Accounts.
    Next Level.
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security Tab you can set who sees you as On-line.
Check you are not set to Block everyone.
If it is set to Allow Specific People then Buddies need to be in that list (Recent Buddies cannot be in this list)
NOTE:- Some of these settings can be influenced by using the same iChat details in a second (Test) Mac User account and using Parental Controls.
You will only really sort it by taking off the Parental Controls.
Based somewhat on the Note issue a second login can also effect things if it was logged in first.

  • WILL AIM iChat work with AIM Triton for PC?

I see RALPH's how to and his summary notes advising that AIM PC will not work the AIM Chat.
But is this the case for AIM's new TRITON? My friend has downloaded TRITON. He is able to invite me to chat with AUDIO. Triton activates my iChat asking me to ACCEPT. I accept. iChat thinks and then tells me the PC user DID NOT ACCEPT, yet the PC user is given a MESSAGE advising both SYSTEMS or USERS are ready to chat.
    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.
    Thanks,
    Gordon

    HI Gordon,
I have heard there is this new item Triton.
I have yet to see anyone post that they have had a succesful Audio only chat.
I see that is only Beta.
    Also
    Q. What hardware is required to run AOL Talk?
    A. The user must have a microphone and a set of speakers attached to their computer. AOL Talk allows users on Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh computers to hold one-to-one conversations. Multi-way conversations are currently only supported on Microsoft Windows XP.
This does not say what App the Mac user should be using.
The AIM for Mac has never done Audio or Video chats. I can see nothing that says this is going to available for Macs. That would suggest iChat as being the application.
I would spend some time checking that Beta site for info on Ports and connection issues.

  • AIM & IChat AV freezing

Here's the deal. I have been video chatting with someone on a pc using AIM. It works fine until we hit the 5 minute 8 second mark. At that time, their picture freezes in my screen. They can still see me fine in their video & we both can hear the audio. But it happens every single time at 5:08. Here are some figures that I am getting from connection doctor while chat is good.
    Local:
    FPS - 10.0
    Bitrate - 113
    Other PC Machine:
FPS - 22.1 (this changes to 0 of course at 5:08 when it freezes)
    Bitrate - 100
    We have both done bandwidth test: Mac- download - 2000 upload - 450 PC - download - 2892 upload-475
Any ideas on the problem would be appreciated.

    Hi Kristen,
We have not been able to find an answer to this since it was posted back on the 17th Sept 2004 in what is now iChat 2.x

  • AIM ichat will not sign in on Mac book pro/Lion. It always says error..?

mac book pros on lion will not sign in to ichat using a AIM. My computer was took to the genius bar and it could not be logged into ichat. everything was tried. they said it was probably a bug so can apple please fix it in the next update? thanks.

    Hi TMSlattery,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  Based on the description of the issue, it sounds like your computer isn't able to reach the Mac App Store (iTunes Store) or iCloud servers.  I would recommend the troubleshooting here:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1368
    Troubleshoot issues on a Mac
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store, a software conflict or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking your access.
Update iTunes and Safari to the latest version.
If you have a firewall, your settings may be preventing you from connecting to the iTunes Store. Follow these steps to configure your firewall.
You may need to reset your keychain. Connection issues are occasionally caused by keychain issues. Learn how to use Keychain First Aid to resolve any issues with your keychain.
If you're receiving a specific error message, follow these steps.
If the issue still persists, contact your Internet service provider and confirm that these ports and servers are enabled over your network.
    Cheers,
    - Ari

  • AIM & Ichat problem

I chat was working fine last night, now todaywhen starting up ichat I get the error that says cannot log into AIM account after multiple tries. Try again later. What is going on?

    Hi,
In iChat Preferences > Accounts > Security do you have the Box to Relay through AIM ticked ?
If so, when (if) the Server goes down you lose Video as well as just the Buddy List being Logged in.
If the program is Crashing and popping up the "Unexpectedly Quit" message on a regular basis you may have an issue.
In the Preferences detailed above but in the Account Info tab do you Allow Multiple Logins ?
Are you then trying to login on a second computer or application that can log in to AIM ?
If so are you typing "1" as the response as this will log the first computer out.

  • The Connection has been lost by the host--AIM, iChat

Hi. Every time I try to log on to AIM or iChat, it goes through the sequence of signing on, but then I get "The Connection has been lost by the host". Now, I would think it would be my connection, being on a college campus and all, but I have no issues surfing the web and checking my e-mail via entourage. My roommates and everyone on my floor have no issues, but then again, none of them are using a Mac.
It worked this whole week and then yesterday it decided to crap out on me. I've restarted, turned off the computer, went back to it...nothing.
I have MacBook using OS X, I have the latest version of AIM and iChat, and I'm using ethernet right now.
--I've tried changing the ports in both programs...no luck.
and my college network doesn't offer support for any IM program, no matter how hard you beg them.

    Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • AIM & iChat chatting question

I have windows 7 and use AIM.  Everyone else in my office has a Mac computer and uses iChat.  One person in the office only receives bubbles with no content when I try chatting with them...how can we fixed this issue?

    Hi,
What font are you using ?
Technically iChat sends the Messages in the Selected font on that computer and that font is only seen if the Buddy has the same Font.
If the Buddy does not have the Font then it should default to the apps Standard font (Helvetica in the case of  iChat and Messages.
It is a while since I booted in to Boot Camp and ran my XP version of Windows.
I certainly don't have Windows 7 so it is unlikely I have the most Current version of AIM for PCs.
iChat can colour the actually text and the last time I tried AIM for PCs it only coloured the Buddy's Name.
I would start by choosing a font both or your have.

  • Aim ichat not connecting

When I attempt to connect to my aim account a message box comes up that it cannot connect to this screen because something is incorrect. This also occurs when I try to log into aim express through the aol website (I know this isn't specifically an ichat problem, but maybe someone here can help). I know my account works because I can check my email, but it does not work for aim. Other family members using their own screennames (on the same account) work fine for aim, but mine doesn't. Can anyone help? Please?
(if not, can someone post a link to the support page on aol - i can't find/access it, and when I call tech support, they won't help because I recently stopped paying for the account (which is free).

    Hi,
Do you mean you use AOL as your ISP and their package to access the Net ?
Have you turned On the IM part ?
If you had such an account and told them that you were no longer going to use it they will have cancelled the Screen name.

  • IChat 5.0.3 to AIM 7.5 video chat problems.

I could use some help, please?
I have a cousin that live in another state and she wants to video chat with me and my mom.
My mom and I have Macs with Snow Leopard and iChat 5.0.3 and my cousin has a PC with Windows 7 and AIM 7.5. Both computers are notebooks and have Webcams built-in.
Whenever we tried to send a Video chat invitation from the PC to the Mac we would get a connection error on the Mac, but when we tried the same thing the other way (Mac to PC) it would go through and we can video chat. I am trying to figure out how to make Video chat invitations work both ways, iChat -> AIM and AIM -> iChat.
I have gone as far as changing the IM server on the Mac to match the IM server on the PC. I then tried to change the IM server on the PC to match the one on the Mac and got a connection error on the PC, so I just reset them both to their defaults.
I even went as far as turning off the firewall on the PC but that didn't work either. Now I'm stuck and can't figure out what to do.
Any information you have would help me and my cousin.

    Hi,
    iChat and AIM Logins first
In iChat Preferences > Accounts Server settings the default Login in login.oscar.aol.com if you are not using the SSL option
It will add a leading s if you do and this is an automatic change (slogin.oscar....)
The Default port is 5190 but almost anything can be used (we Suggest port 443) Changing this port sometimes helps with Videos (It shouldn't but does) on some routers (Zyxels).
    iChat and Video to PCs
Firstly Video and Audio chat have nothing to do with the Login port (Although that is used for Text chats)
The AIM on PC app uses 4 ports to do the Audio and Video In and Out feeds
(iChat 3 used to).  iChat 4, 5 and 6 uses just one port to do the Video and Audio parts of the Chat (In and Out)
So iChat will send on port 16402 the SIP Invite (This is the behindf the scenes connection Process).
It uses the same port fro the A/V chat data.
If the PC starts then it sends an invite (SIP) on port 5061
When it connects it sends the data out on 2 ports from within the range 1024-5000 and asks for data back on two other ports (i.e one each for Vid in, Vid Out, Audio In and Audio out).
iChat does this by contacting a Server called SNATMAP.mac.com run by Apple just for connecting iChat Audio and Video chats.
This server helps the app negotiate the ports that are going to be used during the connection process.
    (this happens on port 5678)
Now the Mac Firewall will allow any port that iChat Uses if the Firewall is On and iChat is allowed.
The AIM app is trying to connect on port 5061 when iChat is not already using it and this is most likely where the issue is.
WIth the Visible Invite iChat is supposed to use SNATMAP and this is supposed to "take" over getting the connection established but it seems it is not that smooth.
    Possible workaround
Set the Login port to 5061 in ichat so the port is open anyway in the Mac Firewall.
Also make sure this port is allowed through your router.
