Hi,
If you have more than One App that will open AIM based Chatrooms from a webpage you can use Interent Explorer to specifiy which one will open to the room
Seee it of 2.2.05 on this page near the bottom for intructions.

  • Editing AIM profile with iChat?

This is kind of a silly question, but how do you go about editing your AIM profile through iChat? I've done it a couple times before but I really cannot remember what I clicked on at all since the last time I edited it.

If you do mean your Profile
    For Tiger
Then Click on the Buddy List itself.
Now go to the Buddies Menu. (Change my Profile)
    For Leopard.
It has been moved to the iChat menu itself.

  • How can I un-setup my AIM account from iChat?

Maybe this is a dumb question but I'm a new mac user. I just set up iChat with my old AIM account but I decided I don't want anything having to do with AOL on my new computer. Can anyone tell me how I can UN-setup my AIM account with iChat?

    Hi
Goto ichats prefs/accounts highlight the account and click on the - button at the bottom of the window.

  • Video chat works on AIM but not iChat

I'm trying to do a video chat with my dad who is running AIM 5.9. I can not create a video chat with him using iChat regardless of who initiates the chat. However, I can video chat with him when I fire up AIM 5.9 on my PC.
I think things are set up correctly on my side. I had been unable to video chat with rjinwipc, but got that working after updating the firmware on my DI-624 router.
Does the fact that AIM works but iChat does not say anything about where to concentrate for troubleshooting?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Umm,
    I see a potential problem.
The D-Link DI 624 does not like doing UPnP for iChat
See note 2 here (This may have been corrected with later firmware that shwn in the table of devices).
This is of Course to get these listed device to Work Out of the box rather than set up as many people have to do.
Moving back to the problem We have a device that does not like UPnP and another computer to connect.
If Port Forwading is being used then one computer is out of the loop anyway.
Potential solution is to Port Trigger. Which PortForward.com shows as possible.
I would not use this method described on this page though. as it descibes a PC app to help with a Mac application.
Set the iChat ports like this.
Trigger port 5190 (Start and End) TCP protocol (Type) to open Port 5190 Public tpye Both
Trigger port 5678 (Start and end) Tpye UDP opens ports 5678,5060,16384-16403 (please not the lack of spaces)
The Bonjour ports need to be triggered as single ports like 5190 but the public type for 5297 and 5353 can stay at UDP and the 5298 can be set to Both.
The Jabber ports of 5220, 5222 and 5223 can also be set as single triggers.
The AIM application will then be able to use the Port 5190 trigger.
It will also need ports 1024-5000 to be triggered with port 1024 as the trigger (On TCP)

  • AIM Icon in iChat?

Is there a way to get the icon I choose to be my AIM icon for other people to see? My friends don't see the icon I have for myself.

I guess the problem wasn't on my end, but rather my friends end... the aim icons in iChat work fine as others can indeed see them..

  • AIM links: Adium X launching instead of iChat.  How do I change?

When I click on AIM links within a web page, my Adium X client launches as the default application rather than iChat. I would like iChat to be my default AIM client. I have looked in both applications preferences but I don't see any such option to set as a default. Any ideas on how to make iChat the default application once again?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
You could use Internet Explorer to change this option, but I prefer RCDefaultApp because it's has numerous features.
Change the aim: protocol to point to the application iChat instead of Adium once you've installed the freeware.
    Hope this helps!

  • Can video ichat-AIM, no longer ichat!

This is odd. As of a few weeks ago, I can no longer video or audio chat with my mother or brother in Canada (they have macs and use iChat). But, i can still video with my sister on her PC in New York! The only thing I can think of is i have restarted from the power mains my apple airport base station and my Voyager Router 200 (BT in the UK). My brother apparently updated my mothers cable modem, but he can chat with her, and my sister can chat with her.
Any ideas? I have firewalls off, and have tried resetting things. The connection doctor says it receives no response from 2 ip numbers, both ending in 5060.
    Thanks!
    --Kasia

    Hi Kasia,
Which of these two deivces is the DHCP server for you home Net ?
    I don't know. How can I tell?
    Open System Preferences > Network
Click on the connection method you are using.
    Click on the TCP/IP tab.
If this read USING DHCP on the drop down just under the tabs then the router (or possibly the modem) is being a DHCP server.
If the Router is an Airport Device, open Airport Admin Utility forun in Applications/Utilities
Log in to the Airport Device
    Go to the Network tab.
IF this has a dot in the Selection circle for Distributing Addresses then it is being a DHCP server.
Now go to the Internet tab.
If thsi reads Get an Address Automatically then the modem is being a DHCP server.
For the BT 200 see here This page tells you the Default User Name and Password to acceess the @00 in a web browser. IT has Pics and instructions on how to do Port Forwarding.
I see that the left hand menu has UPnP And I would use that instead as it is an On /Off setting and you can use Multiple copumters with it.
If you have got Port Forwarding set up I would leave it for the moment and just check that the IP address the Port Forwading is pointing to is the one listed in the Airport Internet Tab. If it is not then change it or set up the Modem and Airport Link as a static Address (Manual). This will be in the IP and DHCP menu item on the 200 where it may tell you a range of IP addresses handled by the DHCP server function. If this is a limited range (not .2 -.255) then use a number outside this range to set the Airport to Manual IP in the Interent tab and copy the information from the other boxes for Subnet mask and Router IP and any DNS servers.
If you upload the pics to a web site you can post a link here. If you do not have your own web space then use something like Flickr or Photobucket.
With DHCP servers the IP address of the devices connected to it can change and any Port Forwarding can be pointing to the wrong IP address and I would guess this is most likely the cause of the problem.

  • No aim in my ichat (a newbie questions and help)

I am relatively new to ichat as I have never needed it use it untill the girlfriend took a job on a cruise line. With that I bought my imac g5 about 3 years ago and never messed with ichat. Now that I wanted to start using it I started with the apple ichat 101 guide. I created an aim account, made sure it works (at least I think it does as I have no buddies on it yet), then started up ichat. In the first time tutorial it says a start up screen will appear to register your .mac or aim account. When I started ichat, this initial setup screen didnt pop up. It just opened the program and aim runs in the background. I then go into prefferences and accounts under the file menu and the only thing listed is bonjour. I cant seem to figure out how to change it to the aim account. I believe I am running ichat 2.1 (what ever came with the first gen imac) and downloaded the latest version (4.7) of aim yesterday. Could this be a problem? I am also using a wirless router, but my internet seems to work. I see that there are lots of posts about router settings on this board for aim accounts, but dont know if thats an issue either. Forgive my ignorance as I am also typing this on my windows computer at work and am not sure exactly which version of ichat I have installed on the computer at home. Anyhelp would be gratly appreciated as I am new to the ichat world. Recommendations on a camera would also b helpful since my computer does not have isight and am looking for a cam. Thanks in advance

Go back to ichats prefs/accounts and at the bottom you will see a +, click on it and put your AIM account details in.

  • AIM PC to iChat MAC help please

I am visiting my sister in N.C. She has a PC. I have a MAC. I brought my MAC with me. I can video chat MAC to MAC through her Earthlink Cable modem but cannot get her PC to chat with a MAC. I have read through most of the documents contained in the forum and still cannot connect a video chat with AIM on the PC.
I was getting "did not respond" messages but now can't even text chat with anyone If I double click on my buddie from the list AIM crashes. Before AIM crashes I get an message: Error signature:
    AppName: aim.exe AppVer: 5.9.3861.0 ModName: msvcr71.dll
    ModVer: 7.10.3052.4 Offset: 00010428
I can text chat if I type in their user name then hit send.
This is what is going on with the PC:
AIM triton uninstalled then installed AIM 5.9
Tuned camera which is a Logitech pro 5000
Service Pack 2 set to "any"
the only thing I haven't done that the instructions suggest is download the "extra" video file. The link takes me to a blank AIM page.
    download speed : 4571 kbps or 571.3 KB/sec.
    upload speed : 354 kbps or 44.3 KB/sec.

The MAC I am trying to connect to is running ichat 3 and OS 10.4.4

I leave on Tuesday morning and would like to resolve this by then.

I'm not sure I can offer much help other than to say I'm not surprised at the fact you can easily connect from Mac to Mac and not always from Mac to PC.
If it were me, I think I'd try tossing ichat pref's to the trash first and then try to connect again. Do a search on your hard drive for:
    com.apple.iChat.plist
then drag and drop these preferences to the trash. Your app will create a new default set of preferences for ichatav that may work better for you.
In addition I think apple is aware of this ongoing issue but to date there has not been an overall solution to this problem. May have more to do with AIM than with apple's ichatav (or perhaps both).
Ralph Johns might have more to add here since he's our resident expert on such issues.
    Ralph are you out there?
Btw .... it's been a while since I posted here on a regular basis. But I have noticed several changes to this forum in terms of format and lost / missing posts. I'm still a bit curious when apple will restore my 8000+ posts (if ever). I'm assuming we're going to have to give this up to "Lost Posts Heaven" for the time being ....

  • Trying to install the Aim version of ichat on my new mac I only seem to be using the messages I want it to look like the old aim i used on my old mac

I used to run ichat though Aim, I just purchased a new mac mini and I am able to socialize then different wasy except Ichat through aim. It's very important that i use this because it's the only way to keep up with my professors, colleages and family members who all use ichat through aim

    Hi,
(Umm, I was only away a few days - Community Specialists are supposed to wait a week)
The Messages app is basically iChat with the iOS Messages app added on.
This adds the iMessages features.  (essentially Apple's Own Messaging service like AIM or MSN but more like a system without a Buddy list)
If you happened to have Migrated your User account from your old Computer you may find that the System Preferences > Mail, Contact and Calendars pane has picked up on both emails and Names and IDs used in iChat and they may be active for Messages.
On first run Messages will tend to ask for an Apple ID to be "registered" with the iMessages service.
Once you have done this it will open the Main Messages window (It has become a Tabbed Chat and Interface combined purpose window that is "always On" by default.
As Braden has said you can add a Screen Name or Jabber ID  or a Yahoo ID.
The Add Pane reduces the AIM Variants for MobileMe and @Mac.com to just AIM (add the Screen Name in Full) but retains the Google separation in Jabber.
The next issue is that by default Buddy Lists are not on Show.
Go to the Window Menu  and use the "Buddies" or "CMD + 1" keystrokes.
This then is a combined window (Of all the Buddy List accounts such as Bonjour if enabled, Jabber/Google/Facebook or Yahoo or AIM (valid) ones.
In the Preferences > General Section there is a line about "Gather All Accounts into one List"
Unticking this will separate out the Buddy lists you have.
    To be clear.
You will be asked for an Apple ID to "Register" for iMessages.
    Other Account have Buddy Lists
By Default these appear in one List but can be separated.
As you may know certain Apple IDs ending in @mac.com and those linked to iCloud using @me.com and @icloud.com ending are also Valid AIM Screen Names.
If you use your Apple ID as your AIM Name then you will have to enter it as the Apple ID for iMessages and then in the Add Pane as the AIM name.
Main Window  (Window Menu > Messages, CMD +0 )
Has an icon that looks like a square box and pencil.
This will add a "New Message" to the left.
The blue icon that appears top right can be used to select Contact (for iMessages) or Buddies.
Also Typing a Name in the "To" spot will bring up a list of Contacts and Buddies with indicators as to whether they are iMessages, AIM or Jabber or Yahoo potential connections.
Chats (Buddy lists) or Conversations (iMessages contacts) remain AIM to AIM, Jabber to Jabber or iMessages to iMessages.
If you have a Valid AIM Name you will have to add this to Messages to continue where you left off in iChat.

  • Using OSX lion and I created an aim account but ichat will not let me login and says my password or username is incorrect!?

I have created an AIM account on my computer. When I go to sign into Ichat it does not let me sign in. It says my username/password is incorrect. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Whenever I have created a Name at AIM then I have received an email to tell me (via the email I listed) that a name has been created.
    Such as this:-
Thank you. An AOL account as been created using this email address.
To complete the registration and activate the account, please verify your email address by clicking the link below.
Yes, I made this request and I want to reserve this email address as part of the AOL account service
No, I did not make this request and I do not want my email address registered with the AOL account service
You will not be able to use this AOL account or make changes to the account until the registration is complete.
    Thank you,
    The AOL Team
(Some lines are links in the original)
The wording in the above is from an older confirmation email, I have a newer one has slightly different wording.
That is then followed by a "Thank for Confirming" email.
An @mac.com Apple ID that is also a valid AIM Screen Name is registered here
Keep the password to 16 characters or less (it's an AIM  limit despite the prompts on the Site for longer).
The Apple ID (Using @mac.com) links one email to the @mac.com name.  That email is a must  but must not already be used with  another Apple ID

  • AIM Variables in iChat Profile

In AOL's official client one can use variables such as %n, %d, and %t to show the viewers screen name, the current date or time, etc. These are especially useful for passing information to a website.
The problem is that if I try to add these to a link in my profile, say, "http://www.mysite.com/index.php?info=%n", iChat will slip in a number and the link will no longer work, i.e. "http://www.mysite.com/index.php?info=%25n".
Is there a way to maintain the functionality of the variables? Escape characters or the like?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Beth,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
It was noted back in iChat 2.x that HTML links in people's profiles could be a source odf a malcious attck on your computer. It was more aimed at aim users if you pardon the pun.
However it was a Security hole that Apple blocked. Effectively it made it so that HTML links would not work.
It seems you have come across the way in which this is done.
There will be no way round this, unfortunately.

  • I have no idea how to use the new "messages" instead of ichat

i have recently got my first macbook. it isnt the first time i used one.  my friend has the macbook pro as well.  she has the "ichat" app for connecting with her friends.  but i have the "messages" app and i have no idea how to use it.. i cant find the buddy list to add friends... i dont know how to sign in to my account.. and when i try to send a message to someones id it says they arnt registered with ichat.. i have no idea what to do or where to begin!

    Hi Alexaaa,
Open the Messages app and under the Messages menu go to Preferences>Accounts and set up your account using your AppleID and password.
Once you have your account set up, then open the messages window. Next to the Search window you will see a little square with a pencil in it, click on that to start a new message. The cursor will be in the "To" line, and at the end of that line you will see a ". Click on that, and your contacts list will come up. Find the contact you want to send a message to, and select either their email or their phone number to send a message. Type in your message in the little message window at the bottom and press Enter to send.
Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions!
    Cheers,

  • I can't log into a newly created Aim name for Ichat

It says you cant change account settings while youre logged in in the accounts tab area, but I am offline still and the log in box repeatedly pops up. It says my username or password is incorrect.  But i just created it and know it is correct. iMessage logs in fine as well.  I have search for hours, and tried many different solutions with no luck.  very frustrated.  thanks for any help

Make sure that you haven't saved Uppercase and Lowercase versions of that name and password.
Remove saved Password(s): Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Saved Passwords" > "Show Passwords"

  • IMessage, why did you not instead make iChat available on iOS5...

That makes much more sense, and use apple ids to ID. Then com between all devices becomes possible. You could even integrate Facetime there.

I agree. To have the ability to start a conversation on my computer, get up to go to work, messages are then being pushed to my phone. I then sit down back at my computer log in with my Apple ID and resume my conversations on there.
I would imagine this would be alogical next step, but the idea of waiting another year to get this functionality sounds awful. NO mention in the keynote makes me feel that this may be the case.
Related side-thought: I almost would find the use of the Apple ID a little too personal. I don't know about you, but BBM was always something my BB friends used. They would share their BBM Pin with anyone who was interested in talking. (i.e. people met at parties, friends of friends) I wouldn't want to do that with my Apple ID, its my direct email address.
