AIM questions

I have a BB 8330 and was wondering why I can't see buddy icons when I have it set to show them and why can't I see their status messages without having to send them a message to see them?
Thanks.

When this phone launches in the US.
less than a month on Tmobile.
I was wondering if I will be able to get on AIM or Yahoo without a web data plan.
If you don't have data plan you can't setup the mails, only you can check on the web page
Also, if I have Wi-fi in my house, can I connect to the web for no charge?
Yes, of course.
If I help you with any inquire, thank you for click kudos in my post.

  • General iChat video AIM Question.

Has anyone figured out what port settings your AIM has to be on in order to use the video chat feature? I am currently using port 1080 and my parents can see me, but I cant see them and I tried using these same ports with another friend and it wont work at all. Any help.

    Hi,
Apple has 2 Articles on this now.
This came out for iChat 2 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507?viewlocale=en_US and was updated for iChat 3 and the Jabber parts (you need the info on Jabber and Bonjour form here)
Apple added this Article for Leopard (but did not include the Bonjour and Jabber Info)
    The A/V ports are 5060 (if Tiger/iChat 3), 5678, 16384-16403 if Tiger/iChat 3 or just 16393-16402 if Leopard/iChat 4
(it does not really matter if you set the iChat 3 ports as the Leopard ones are inside that range).

  • Edit a buddy name in AIM for iPhone?

I like to view the people in my buddy list using their actual names and not their AIM screen names. On iChat this is very easy.
But on AIM free for the iPhone I can no longer do this.
I was absolutely able to do this on AIM free for my iPhone in the fall of last year, but somewhere down the line of an app update to AIM free I can no longer change the user details of my buddies to display their names.
for example, if a buddy's user name is buddyxyz123 I prefer to view him or her as John Doe.
Is this still possible in AIM free for the iPhone?
If not is there a good AIM app for the iPhone that will allow me to do this?
    Thank you

I believe this is still the same discussion forums where I've come for many years to both ask questions and help answer other questions about all things related to Apple, including 3rd party products used on Apple devices.
If anyone has any knowledge that can help me on my AIM question, I'd be very appreciative.
    Thank you.

  • Two questions:  how do Skype and iChat compare for group video?  quality, reliability, cost, etc are important.  2) Is my MobileMe ID what I need to use in the window in making an iChat buddy?  It only says AIM above the window, online tutorial differs.

Two questions:  1) How do Skype and iChat compare for group video?  Quality, reliability, cost, etc are important.  2) Is my MobileMe ID what I need to input in the window in making an iChat buddy?  It only says AIM above the window, online tutorial differs, saying MobileMe, AIM, GoogleTalk (Jabber) all work. Thnx

    Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

  • Methodology question (always aim for same throughput)

This is more of a 'sanity check' than anything (probably a real 'newbie' question) I just wondered how people approach these sorts of issues...
I have a very simple test for a single method in a webservice. The test criteria are to hit 2.5 transactions per second with 100 users (and guage the response time).
Prior to a change in the environment, I had the scenario set with a delay of 29s (as each iteration typically took 8s). We identified an issue and the fix decreased the response times to around 4s.
Am I correct in the approach that I should now be INCREASING the delay in my scenario (to say 33s) to account for the improvement (and achieve the same throughput). As obviously running exactly the same scenario will generate a higher throughput because the respones times have decreased.

Absolutely; the main aim is to obtain a throughput of 2.5tps with 100VUS (though the concurrency figure is a bit vague).
The issue was that compared to our other webservices (doing a similar test) we used to get drastically different response times (typically 2-4s) but this particular webservice was only responding in typically 7-8s. We eventually found a couple of issues in both application and environment and the resulting changes decreased the typical response times significantly.
I just wanted confirmation that I was taking the correct approach in altering my scenario once the performance had improved. I actually find that I need to have a 34s delay between iterations (rather than the initial 29s) to achieve around the same result in a 15 minute test. Effectively a 'performance regression test' will need tweaking as changes to applications/environments occur.

  • REGULAR AIM FOR MAC QUESTION PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Question about Messages application and AIM.

Hello, I purchased my first apple device last year (iphone) at which point I created an iCloud account and received an @me email address. This is also my Apple ID. Later in the year Apple also gave me an @icloud email like everyone else. I am enjoying my iphone very much and this year I decide to purchase my first os x device (macbook) soon. This is what leaves me to my following questions:
    1. I wish to use the Messages application just for iMessage and not AIM or any other IM service. It is my understanding that about 2 years ago .mac and mobileme users were having AOL create Lifestream profiles for them without pemission. Now I have never been a .mac or mobileme user and only signed up icloud last year as previously stated. I just want to know if AOL is still creating these profiles and if they affect icloud users? I could not find any information about this issue being resolved. Would using the Messages applicaton just for imessage have the risk of having my icloud email have a Lifestream profile created for it?
    2. I am aware that when setting up my macbook for the first time it will ask to sign in to with your apple id and then into icloud. I plan to do this. I am told that this will make me signed into imessage automatically in the Messages application. What I want to know is if this will make me sign into AIM automaticlly too? I have no intention of ever using AIM so I hope this is not the case.
I hope I have made myself clear as English is not my fist language. Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi,
    The last bit first.
iChat was the application used before Mountain Lion and Messages.
It could only join the AIM, Jabber and in iChat 6 the Yahoo services.
These are Instant Messaging services so the text sent between you and a Buddy tend to be referred to as IMs.
The AIM site I linked to above has an Option (when you can log in there)  that allows your to turn this AIM feature Off.
Some Jabber servers can do it but it tends to be an option the person running the Jabber decides to do or not.
If a Server is set up to allow Off Line Messaging then those have to be stored.
These can  a concern for the person running the server; either with storage space in the first place and for issues around governments want to "see" the data.
A part of the iChat and Messages apps perform a "Listening" function when you turn your computer On but do not launch the App.
This Listening will start up the App if anyone send you an iMessage  and AIM or Jabber message.
However this function of Messages can be turned Off.
This pic was created for something else but you can see the second line down is about setting the Status to Offline when the App is Quit.
This effectively stops the App doing the Listening.
    Back to the Lifestream issue.
I am not sure what triggers the Lifestream to be set up.
I used a Search on the Lifestream site for my main AIM Name (which I can set the Lifestream to Privacy > No-one) and for my @me.com one which I cannot log in to the AIM settings site.
I cannot see anything returned in either case.
I also tried when Logged in under my main AIM name and got this form my @me.com ID
I think that when AOL/AIM started Lifestream all those people that had AIM and AIM valid Screen Names were included in Lifestream.
It may now be different and you may have to sign up for it.
There seems to be a set up page.
It would seem that my @me.com ID and @icloud.com ID have not been set up for Lifestream where as my AIM account (Main AIM Name as I call it) was set up in the beginning.
I am afraid I don't have any clearer information than that on this part of your enquiry.

  • Ichat to AIM on vista question

I am not able to video chat or audio only chat with my friend, who uses Vista, via AIM. I found a website telling me how to set up the windows firewall on the pc, however it only says for windows xp. I tried it on my old dell laptop running xp and video and audio chat were both successful with macbook running leopard and imac running tiger.
My question is: Will this work for vista? Or just an xp fix?
BTW, the settings said to turn on UPnP and open the scope to any, not jsut subnet. I hope that makes sense. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Some Forums have Users Tips above the Topic list and iChat has some.
This one http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438 is about iChat to AIM on a PC and video chats.
Quick things to try and check.
Have she allowed AIM as an Exception in the Windows Firewall ?
In your ichat Go to the Preferences item in the iChat Menu.
Chose Video/Audio section and change the Bandwidth to 500kbps
If you are using Leopard (10.4.x) and iChat 4.x.x then go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and set the speed to 1.5Mbps (Don't worry that it hints about it being for Cable)
Double check System Preferences > Sound > Output tab.
If you actually have two methods of output make sure the chosen one here is the same as in iChat > Preferences > Video and the extra Output Drop down you will get below your Pic/Camera Preview
ON the PC end the Mic is set up in the Control Panels and the AIM app uses that Level for Audio and Video chats.
She may need to make sure this is high enough. (I am not sure this is adjustable during chats like the System Preferences > Sound > Input on the Mac is for iChat).

  • IChat to AOL/AIM image quality question.

This is a question about the image quality during a video chat from AOL/AIM and Trillian Pro on PCs to iChat on Macs. The details of the computers, connections and cameras are:
I'm running 10.4.8 on a MacBook Pro (2.33GHz CPU, 2GB RAM) with iChat AV 3 with a DSL connection that averages 1.24 Mbps DL and 271 Kbps UL and an external iSight camera.
My mother is running 10.3.9 on an iBook (1.33 GHz CPU, 256 MB RAM) with iChat AV 2.1 with a DSL connection that averages 155 Kbps DL and 146 Kpbs UL and an external iSight camera.
My sister is running Windows (not sure which version) on a Dell Dimension DIM4600 (2.60GHz CPU, 512MB RAM) with Trillian Pro with a DSL connection that averages 1.29 Mbps DL and 446 Kbps UL and a Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 with QuickCam 8.3.0.
When I video chat with my mother my picture to her is good and her picture to me is good.
When I video chat with my sister my picture to her is good, but her picture to me is bad. The slightest movement causes the image to go break up into large squares that settles back down a decent image when the movement ends.
When my mother video chats with my sister, my mother's picture to my sister is good, but my sister's picture to my mother is bad. Again, the slightest movement causes the image to go break up into large squares that settles back down a decent image when the movement ends.
Also I have a friend (some kind of PC, some kind of Logitech webcam) using AOL/AIM 5.9 (I think) with cable modem connection (I don't know the speed). When I video chat with him my picture to him is good, but his picture to me is bad. Again, the slightest movement causes the image to go break up into large squares that settles back down a decent image when the movement ends.
    Does anyone know if:
    (1) this kind of behavior "par for the course" with PCs over the AOL/AIM network?
    or if
    (2) there is some "switch" in Trillian Pro and AOL/AIM 5.9 that needs to be thrown to improve the image (like the Bandwidth switch in iChat preferences)?
    or
    (3) is the camera or camera connection (USB vs. Firewire) that causes the problem?
    Thanks.
P.S. I know the speed of my mother's DSL connection seems slow, but because our video chat images both ways are good I don't think that's the problem here.

    Hi James,
I can relate to this somewhat based on AIM 5.9 to Macs.
You may be able to use the information to sort Trillian out further.
Ok first start a chat and then open the Connection Doctor from the Video menu at your end.
The Bit rate should be well over 100 for both of you.
Her Frame rate should be at least 10fps.
Now when on AIM 5.9 the framerate drops to about 1fps to the ichat end it is usually because the Pic Quality is set too high on the PC end. It then spends so long producing one frame it slows down sending the video.
To change this on the AIM app a user has to do the following.
They click on the preview tab (there are two; one for your incoming and one for their preview).
With the preview as the front tab a small icon appears to the right of the pic.
Clicking on this brings up a slider.
Sliding the slider to the left reduces the quality.
Visually you may not detect this but the effect is sort of converse in that the frames are produced faster as less detail is in them and the video frame rate goes up and therefore looks smoother.
I have not heard of Trillian needing this and consequently would not know where specifically to direct you.
I would start with the Preferences/Properties of Trillian and see if there are any setting there for output.
Look at size of the pic at their end as well as frame rates that they are aiming at.
As you say the slower 150ish connection is considered slow in many places now-a-days but is enough for 1-1 chats (min 100kbps).
The problem is likely to be a setting on the PC end.
I would also check the Trillian site for info about adjusting the frame rate or video quality. They have an extensive FAQ database.

  • Screen sharing and AIM account question

In the Apple docs it says:
"You can share screens using AIM (including me.com and Mac.com), Jabber, Google Talk, and Bonjour. You can’t share screens using iMessage or Yahoo!."
I know I can simply create a free AOL/AIM account for this. But how does one get a me.com or mac.com address? Are those old, no-longer-available services?
What do most people use for screen sharing. I've been using my AIM account, but was unable to get it to work yesterday with some people who created new AOL accounts for this purpose, even though I see them online. They don't get my requests, except for one person. And even if she accepts the request we don't get connected. And we can't video chat either.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • No aim in my ichat (a newbie questions and help)

I am relatively new to ichat as I have never needed it use it untill the girlfriend took a job on a cruise line. With that I bought my imac g5 about 3 years ago and never messed with ichat. Now that I wanted to start using it I started with the apple ichat 101 guide. I created an aim account, made sure it works (at least I think it does as I have no buddies on it yet), then started up ichat. In the first time tutorial it says a start up screen will appear to register your .mac or aim account. When I started ichat, this initial setup screen didnt pop up. It just opened the program and aim runs in the background. I then go into prefferences and accounts under the file menu and the only thing listed is bonjour. I cant seem to figure out how to change it to the aim account. I believe I am running ichat 2.1 (what ever came with the first gen imac) and downloaded the latest version (4.7) of aim yesterday. Could this be a problem? I am also using a wirless router, but my internet seems to work. I see that there are lots of posts about router settings on this board for aim accounts, but dont know if thats an issue either. Forgive my ignorance as I am also typing this on my windows computer at work and am not sure exactly which version of ichat I have installed on the computer at home. Anyhelp would be gratly appreciated as I am new to the ichat world. Recommendations on a camera would also b helpful since my computer does not have isight and am looking for a cam. Thanks in advance

Go back to ichats prefs/accounts and at the bottom you will see a +, click on it and put your AIM account details in.

  • AIM app questions

when i msg someone over aim and go back to the home screen, am i still connected to aim and will i be able to still receive messages? because when i go back into it, it says reconnecting...so im assuming i disconnect when i leave the app?
and to avoid sms texting, i want to use aim to text other phones. but how do i get it to where incoming sms texts comes to aim?
also, if i had no texting plans, do incoming sms texts cost money for at&t?

No 3rd party app can run in the background, so you are disconnected when leaving the AIM app.
If you don't have an SMS allowance or plan, you are charged a fee by AT&T for each SMS received or sent via the iPhone's SMS client.

  • Mac iChat to PC AOL AIM AV: PC firewall questions

I've got a PowerBook G4 with 10.3.9 and iChat 2.1 (v 153). Unfortunately most of my relatives use PCs. For the last few Christmas' and Hanukkah's my wife and I have bought our family web cams so we could AV chat.
However, only my sister has had any luck using her webcam and that was only after she had a friend come over and set it all up for her. The usual snag seems to be the firewall on the PC end (both the Windows firewall and the Norton and/or MacAfee firewalls).
Is there a set of instructions somewhere (for novice PC users) that gives instructions on what ports to open and how to do it for PCs? If so, could someone post a link here or give me a set of instructions that I can forward to my relatives?
    Thanks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

So far I don't have any solid answers, but for anyone interested, I got this reply from my sister about what she thinks was done to her PC's firewalls:
OK - for the audio - go into the camera icon and to the camera control panel and under audio make sure the microphone is selected and is the default. That's also where to control the volume.
Firewalls - open the fire wall information - I clicked on Fire Walls at the bottom and go to exceptions and make sure the camera is checked as an exception.
Then there's this link I found amoung this Discussion board that gives some information on what to do to firewalls
    * http://www.aptr36.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html
    Specifically this part:
What to do with AIM on a PC to get it working
First of all find out if the PC has been upgrade with the SP2 Service Pack.
Service Pack 2 is a recent major system software update to Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional.
Updating a Windows XP computer to SP2 may cause Mac iChat AV to AIM 5.5/5.9 PC video and audio connections to fail because, by default, the firewall created by SP2 blocks UPnP communications from the Internet.
If the SP2 firewall is enabled:
    1. Go to Start>Control Panel>Security Center>Manage security settings for: Windows Firewall>Exceptions tab> add or check UPnP Framework as an Exception.
    1. You can go straight to the Firewall Control Panel [Start>Control Panels>Firewall]
    2. Use the Add Button and Add the AIM appliction.
    2. Select UPnP Framework and click the Edit... button.
    3. Be sure that both the TCP 2869 and UDP 1900 ports are checked and listed as 'Any' under Scope.
    4. If the Scope of each port is listed as 'Subnet,' click the Change scope... button, and select the 'Any computer (Including those on the Internet)' radio button. Do this for both ports, and then save the changes by clicking the OK buttons.

  • AIM & iChat chatting question

I have windows 7 and use AIM.  Everyone else in my office has a Mac computer and uses iChat.  One person in the office only receives bubbles with no content when I try chatting with them...how can we fixed this issue?

    Hi,
What font are you using ?
Technically iChat sends the Messages in the Selected font on that computer and that font is only seen if the Buddy has the same Font.
If the Buddy does not have the Font then it should default to the apps Standard font (Helvetica in the case of  iChat and Messages.
It is a while since I booted in to Boot Camp and ran my XP version of Windows.
I certainly don't have Windows 7 so it is unlikely I have the most Current version of AIM for PCs.
iChat can colour the actually text and the last time I tried AIM for PCs it only coloured the Buddy's Name.
I would start by choosing a font both or your have.

If you reference my last ichat question, you will see that I have had serious problems and had to create a new account.
How can I import contacts from another AIM account to this new one??

    Hi,
Use AIM for Mac and use the Export and Import features.
Other than that it is a question on making sure every Single Buddy has more than just their Screen name in the IChat Address Card so it is added to the Address Book and dragging them back from there
