Aiport Express - channels and muticast rate

Im using an airport express for my home network and wondered about the various settings to try out. Firstly does the channel make any difference to signal strength? I've noticed several neighbours have wireless networks on channel 1 so wanted to switch from that.
also regarding mutlicast rate. setup comes set as 5.5 and wondered what the various other options do, ie: which would be best for performance as oposed to furthest range.
11=best 2=furthest?
Cheers

kladzer welcome to the discussions.
See if this doesn't explain it for you.
Channels are important to understand because they affect the overall capacity of your WLAN. A channel represents a narrow band of radio frequency. Since radio frequency modulates within a band of frequencies, there is a limited amount of bandwidth within any given range to carry data. Therefore it is important that the frequencies do not overlap or else the throughput would be significantly lowered as the network sorts and reassembles the data packets sent over the air.
Knowing that the 802.11a specification operates at radio frequencies between 5.15 and 5.875 GHz, and that the 802.11b and 802.11g specification operates at radio frequencies in the 2.4 to 2.497 GHz range, we can see that the 802.11a has a wider frequency band, allowing more channels and more overall throughput. The wider frequency band allows 802.11a to support up to eight non-overlapping channels. However, 802.11b/g standards support only up to three non-overlapping channels.
Each channel is capable of carrying the maximum throughput for its standard. Therefore, the 802.11b and 802.11g standards have a maximum of three non-overlapping channels, each carrying 11 Mbps throughput (33 Mbps total) and 54 Mbps (162 Mbps total) throughput, respectively. The 802.11a standard has a maximum of eight non-overlapping channels carrying a maximum 54 Mbps throughput each (432 Mbps total). (For more on Wi-Fi standards, check out this Quick Reference guide.)
The frequency ranges and channels may vary by country. In the U.S., the 802.11b (2.4 GHz) standard operates on 11 channels. All but three of those channels are overlapping channels. Channels one, six, and eleven are the only non-overlapping channels.
Most manufactures set their default channel to one of the non-overlapping channels. D-Link products, for example, default to channel six. You have the option of selecting which channel your WLAN operates on in order to avoid interference from other wireless devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency range. Examples of this would be 2.4 GHz cordless phones and X-10 wireless products.
The biggest advantage of 802.11b is that it's the most widely deployed wireless LAN technology and provides good wall penetration and indoor range. The advantage of 802.11a is that it provides increased network capacity and interferes with other wireless devices far less than 802.11b products do.
So to answer your question, unless you have a specific reason for changing it, I would suggest you keep your wireless channel configured for the manufacturer's default settings. If, however, you must change it, for the best performance I would suggest trying to use one of the other non-overlapping channels first: Channels one, six, and eleven. Other then interference issues, there really is no other reason or advantage to selecting another channel.

  • My wi-fi worked fine on Airport Express two days ago.  Now the light is green, but I can't get the Internet on my satellite connection.  I've checked Network Preferences, Aiport Express menu, and the satellite tech support. The Ethernet connection works.

My wi-fi connection from my iPad via the Airport Express Base Station on my home computer worked just fine until yesterday morning.  I have a Macintosh G5 with a satellite connection.  I could not get an Internet connection.  After using the Network Preferences and Aiport Express applications several times, then unplugging and replugging in the computer, satellite modem and Airport Express module, checking the satellite dish for any obstructions, and so on, the computer still wouldn't connect to the Internet.  (The green light was on in the Airport Express module.)  I called the satellite company technical support division last night.  The tech couldn't find any problem with the satellite connection.  When I plugged the satellite modem cord directly into the Ethernet outlet on my computer, I could pick up the Internet.
Today, the Airport Express module still has a green light but still doesn't connect to the Internet.  The only thing I can think of is that lights went out for about 15 minutes yesterday morning.  All of my electronics, except the Aiport Express Base Station, are on surge protectors.  Why would the Airport Express module still have a green light if it was damaged by the electrical outage?
I bought the module in 2009.  I have never had problems with Apple equipment before this. Is this base station fixable?
    I would appreciate your suggestions.

Hello everyone.  I too have experienced the same problem Mary described starting on the same day she mentioned January 12.  I have a G5 iMac, a G5 mini-mac, and a G4 laptop.  They were all working fine but all have mostly the same problem now in that the G4 does not connect at all and the G5s connect once in a while after restarts but do not maintain the connection.  In my case there was no power interruption.  In fact, the G4 laptop was not even connected to the home power connection.  My iPad2 and iPhone 4s wireless work fine and a wireless PC and Android tablet work fine as well.  The G5 and G4 work fine on an ethernet connection. ISP tech support (AT&T u-Verse) was very generous with their time in trying to solve my problem although it was established early on that their connection and equipment was working fine and that the problem was with my computers.  They walked me through a manual reset of all the particulars on IP addresses etc. so the problem was not related to that either. In the end ISP tech support concluded that the problem must lie with the Airport driver.  For some reason it changes the IP addresses to an incorrect address so it cannot connect.  Indeed when I tried the diagnostics on the G4 I got a window Pop-up that said an application had reset my settings. (In retrospect I seem to recall that I may have gotten that same message early on with the G5s but at that time I did not think much about it and went about trying to reset the settings but that process never concluded well) I think that the problem may be that there must have been an update of the Airport software that was not backward compatible with the G5 and older Macs.  I mention all this for two reasons.  First, perhaps someone out there who knows better than I do how to bring this to Apple's attention and perhaps they will address this.  Second, I would be curious to know whether there is anyway one can return a configuration on Macs to some earlier time period (as you can on PCs) when everything worked and then leave it that way foregoing any subseqent upgrades or any subsequent apps?

  • Aiport express, itunes, and windows

can i use airport express with with windows 7 and play itunes wirelessly? i don't exactly understand the table on the tech specs page.

Yes, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can be used from any network client that is hosting iTunes for streaming ... regardless of the client's operating system.

  • ITunes cannot find Aiport Express via D-link

    iTunes cannot find Aiport Express.
iMac and Airport Express both connected to D-link wireless router (DI-524UP). Can see Airport Express on iMac Airport Utilities, and can communicate (do changes) via the D-link network. iMac working fine with D-link for internett access also.Have set up Aiport Express to serve as extra speakers in iTunes. Airport Express connected to stereo with cable. Can choose the external speakers in iTunes. Think this means iTunes also must be communicating with Airport Express, because If I change the name of the externals speakers in Airport Express, it also changes in iTunes after clicking "update" and the Airport Express re-starts. However after choosing the external speakers in iTunes and starting a song iTunes is seeking the speakers (Airport Express) without finding it. All devices are connected to the same D-link network.
Working fine when I set up Airport Express with its own network and connecting it with iMac. Also I could connect my iPhone to my iTunes library (remote app.) This is not working in the d-Link network either.
It's a drag to have to change both the PC and the iPhone to another network every time I want to play musik on the stereo. This is why I am trying to get everything to work together in the same network (D-Link).
Somebody having met this problem before?

Correction: Downloaded an update for the D-Link, and now the iPhone is working with iMac for remote control of iTunes.
Still iTunes cannot find Airport Express when choosing external speekers

  • How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme? My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured" and my AirPort tool on my PC will not permit me to add my new Airport Extreme network (no network names to choose from)

How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme?
I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?
    Sigve

    Hi
    Thanks for Swift reply.
Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.
    Please advise
    Regards
    Sigve

You already have the software installed that you need if you have 10.8.2.
If AirPort Utility cannot find the Express, that is another matter. More software is not needed. More troublehooting is needed.
Power up the Express for a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a heading of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express
    What happens?

  • Using Aiport Express and internet at the same time?

I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this subject please?
I've got a Macbook running through a wireless BT ADSL modem. I have also managed to connect the Macbook to my Aiport Express to allow me to wirelessly pipe iTunes through my stereo. I am aware that you cannot run both at once (i.e pipe music and browse the web) due to the Macbook being able to be only connected to one wireless network at a time.
My questions is whether there is anyway round this? If I bought an Aiport Extreme base station, connected that to my wireless router and used the Airport Extreme base station for the wireless connection would I be able to add the Aiport Express to that wireless network and subsequently have the internet and the Aiport Express running on the same wireless network - hence being able to pipe the music wirelessly and also browse the web at the same time?
Or is there another way round it?
Any info anyone could offer would be a great help
    Thanks in advance

  • What are the best data and bit rate setting for uploading from final cut express to Youtube?

Can anyone suggest the best data rate and bit rate presets for uploading footage from final cut express 4 to Youtube? What settings will provide the best resolution, quality, and match the current youtube requirements?
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Susan Kayne

It depends on whether you are using aspect ratios of 4:3 or 16:9.
Below is some simple guidance that will provide good quality with reasonably small file sizes.
The first part is for 4:3 video:-
    1. File>Export Using QT Conversion.
    2. The "Format" window should say, "QT Movie".
    3. In "Use" select "LAN/Intranet" from the dropdown menu.
    4. Click "Save" and when it has finished encoding, upload it to YouTube.
If you are making 16:9 video (Standard or High Definition) do steps 1 to 3 above.
Then when you have selected "LAN/Intranet" press the "Options" button and in the new
window that opens press the  "Size"  button and change the  "640x480" to  "853x480"
To do this you will have to click on the  640x480 and a dropdown menu appears.
Select "Custom" from  the bottom of the menu and in the window that opens
    you will see 2 boxes.
Put  853  in the first box and  480  in the second.
    Click OK.
    Then Save it.

  • Aiport Express and Hi-Fi?

I recently bought the Apple Hi-Fi and love it, but was curious if I would somehow be able to interface the Aiport Express to my hi-fi so that i could have my music whever I wanted in the house. I already have a wireless router in my house, so i was wondering if I would be able to transmit over my router to the aiport, which could be plugged into my Hi-Fi via the 3.5mm jack in the back. Anyone thought of this, or it is unfeasable to want to do.
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Kevin

You can use your existing wireless router to transmit to an Airport Express.
Can I use my iPod Hi-Fi to listen to audio from a different source?
Your iPod Hi-Fi has a digital/analog audio input port. You can use it to play music from an iPod that doesn’t have a dock connector or from other audio devices, such as a CD player, stereo receiver, or computer. If you have an AirPort Express Base Station, you can connect it to iPod Hi-Fi and play music from a computer in another room using AirTunes. You connect audio devices or an older iPod using an audio cable with a standard 3.5 mm stereo miniplug. For higher-quality sound, you can connect an optical digital audio device using an S/PDIF optical digital audio cable with a Mini-Toslink connector.

  • TWO Aiport express in WDS network and NAS drive?

    Hi,
I know this question has been asked several times: one airport express cannot be connected to USB nor NAS drive. But what about TWO airport express?
We now have 2 airport express (b/g) at home presently participating in a WDS network with the following connections:
    - Aiport express #1 (WDS main) - living room
=> ethernet = connected to internet
=> jack = connected to HIFI
    - Airport express #2 (WDS remote) - office room
=> USB = connected to printer
My question is the following: would it be possible to connect the ethernet port of Aiport express #2 to a NAS drive? How has the Airport express #2 to be configured (WDS remote? WDS relay? Connection sharing= "bridge" or "distribute a range of IP"?) for this purpose?
I could not find any clear answer yet on this particular situation.
Thanks in advance for your help with this. I do not want to buy a NAS drive and realize that it does not work...
    Ludovic

My question is the following: would it be possible to connect the ethernet port of Aiport express #2 to a NAS drive?
    Yes that should work.
How has the Airport express #2 to be configured (WDS remote? WDS relay? Connection sharing= "bridge" or "distribute a range of IP"?) for this purpose?
Either WDS remote or relay should work. You do not want it distributing IP addresses. Configuring it as a WDS remote or relay should automatically prevent this setting.

  • Computer speakers and Aiport Express

I have a computer running XP SP2 and iTunes 6.0.5. I have 2 airport express basestations and want to use the multiple speaker option to play the sound through all 3 items (internal speakers, and both base stations).
iTunes allows me to select all 3, but if an airport basestation is selected, no sound comes from the internal speakers. I can get sound out of both basestations at the same time, but not through the speakers also.
I have a mac laptop running OS X 10.4.7 and iTunes 6.0.5 and this works fine, I get sound from all 3 as expected.
Has anyone got this working on Windows?
And what firewall settings do I need to edit to allow using multiple basestations? Currently have disabled the XP firewall for this but obviously would like it back on.
    Cheers
    Russell

External computer speakers that plug into your Mac's headphone jack will plug directly into the audio output port on the AirPort Express (AX).
There is no way to connect speakers to an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).

I have a perfectly good wi-fi setup but it will not detect my Aiport Express no matter what aI try. Help!

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.

  • Has anyone ever successfully done a cont double buffer acq from multiple SCXI channels AND a spare AI of the MIO that controls the SCXI chassis at the same time?

I am trying do a sanity check before I order some hardware.
What I want to do is acquire from multiple channels in a SCXI chasis and as part of the same acquisition, also read from one of the "un-used" AI channels of the MIO card.
    My concern is this:
All of the channels of the SCXI chassis get multiplexed down into a single channel of the MIO card that controls the SCXI chassis. This means that channel 0 has to do multiple A/D conversions to get a reading from all of the configured SCXI channels.
Meanwhile, the other AI channel of the MIO only has to do one to get it's reading. It seems that the on-boar
d clock of the MIO would have to run at two rates to be able to read all of my SCXI channels AND the other AI channel.
    What I want to do:
I want to just configure a vitual channel for all of my SCXI channels AND one more for one "odd-ball" signal that is incompatable with all of the SCXI modules.
Then I just want to list all of my virtual channels when I configure and start my continuous double buffered acquisition.
I have successfully done all SCXI channels before, but I have never tried to use one of the un-used AI on the MIO at the same time. I have used the spare DIO lines previously, but that will not work in this app.
    So...
If you have done this and it worked, I would greatly appreciate hearing about any special techniques that were used, etc.
