If you are using your G5 to share your internet connection via Airport for the PC laptop (in other words you do NOT have a wireless router) then there is no method to do this except to purchase a wireless router.
If the laptop is a Mac then you can add a WEP password which will be sightly better than no security.
If you do have a wireless router then use WPA.
If you have an Airport base station then use the following instructions.
Applications > Utilities > Airport Admin Utility
Scan and Select your Airport
Click Configure
Enter the Airport password (the default is "public").
On the Airport Tab
Change Wireless Security
Change to WPA
Use a password like this
fdghj789jhcbw73nfmwi69
Remember it.
Click OK
Click Update.
You will now be thrown off the wireless network.
Wait 5 minutes.
Select your network from the Airport menu.
Enter the password.
Done.

  • Adding an Airport Express to existing Airport Network- Help!

There is an Airport Extreme Base station upstairs "hard wired" (ethernet) to a G-5 Tower. There is a MacBook downstairs in the kitchen and it does not get a good connection. We are trying to add an Airport Express as a relay. I have followed the prompts on the Airport Setup Assistant. It recognises the new station gets all the way to the last screen and then can not be added because of "radio interference/conflict" something to that effect. (Sorry I do not have the exact working from the screen.)
Does any one know of an step by step intruction guide in setting up an Airport Express as a relay??
All the Apple manuals and articles say is to follow the on screen prompts. There does not seem to be a specific instruction guide.

    Duane thanks for your help.
Well I think so. We do see it in the list of available networks in the menu bar.
I think I will try and set it up in the same room as the base station. Does that make sense?

  • 2nd Gen Express keeps dropping the network

One of my 2nd Gen Airport Expresses keeos tripping off forcing me to restart it.  It then reconnects fully for a matter of minutes before the dreaded amber light returns and Airport Utility advises me it is no longer extending the network.

Try moving the AirPort Express closer to the main router and also do whatever you can to minimize obstructions in the signal path between the main router and AirPort Express.
Users often locate the AirPort Express much too far away from the main router. Example.....you have your main router downstairs over on one side of the house. You want better coverage upstairs in a bedroom on the other side of the house from the main router.
The correct location for the Express in this example would be a point that is about half way between the main router and the upstairs bedroom.

  • How setup Airport Express to secure/private network behind Netopia router?

    Hi!
I just purchase a Macbook and Airport Express - here are my questions:
    1) how do I set up a network so I only recognize my airport (so many other airport/wireless networks are showing up - I do not know which is mine!)?
    2) how do i then secure this network (best possible built-in security)
Other data: I connect to the Internet via a DSL cable modem which feeds a netopia router which then serves IP addresses and uses DHCP.
    Thank you!

I figured it out - used the airport utility in "utilities" and was able to find my specific Airport Express base station and configure securely - yippeeee!

  • Adding a 2nd Airport Express to extend the network using WDS

I am a bit of a novice, but after I installed an airport express with my d-link wireless router to play itunes on my home stero, the music kept breaking up and stopping. I tried to change the channel, but it said mine was set on automatic and I cannot figure out how to change manually.
So reading apple's suggestions, they said to get another aiport express and extend the network with WDS. I purchased my 2nd express today and have been trying to install it using the airport express assistant. I have had to reset the 2nd express and the original several times. However, what i keep running into is after it gets through all the steps, it asks me for a password for "this basestation". I have read several help topics and it looks like i need to use "public" for this new airport express. I get through that step and then it gives me an unknown error (-6753). Does anyone know what this is? Or is there a way to set-up the 2nd airport express manually? Do I even need a 2nd one? Should I just get an airport extreme? Will that extend the range of my wireless network? Any help is greatly appreciated. I have been at this for about 6 hours now. My wife is going to kill me.

Will the manual for D-Link describe how to set up the
first airport express as a roaming network
    No
do that via the apple settings once its connected via
    ethernet cable?
    Yes
    Different channel.
    Same network name, same security.
Ensure that distribute IP addresses (under Network) is unchecked.
When this is done, will I still be able to play
itunes through the first airport express?
    Yes
Also, then once I do that with the first, then do I
just do the regular set-up for the second as a
network extender via the airport express assistant?
    Yes

  • Using Aiport Express and internet at the same time?

I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this subject please?
I've got a Macbook running through a wireless BT ADSL modem. I have also managed to connect the Macbook to my Aiport Express to allow me to wirelessly pipe iTunes through my stereo. I am aware that you cannot run both at once (i.e pipe music and browse the web) due to the Macbook being able to be only connected to one wireless network at a time.
My questions is whether there is anyway round this? If I bought an Aiport Extreme base station, connected that to my wireless router and used the Airport Extreme base station for the wireless connection would I be able to add the Aiport Express to that wireless network and subsequently have the internet and the Aiport Express running on the same wireless network - hence being able to pipe the music wirelessly and also browse the web at the same time?
Or is there another way round it?
Any info anyone could offer would be a great help
    Thanks in advance
    James

Ahh am I right in thinking this is the way to do it?

  • Why are my Airport Expresses not extending my network?

I have an AirPort TimeCapsule connected to the Internet.  It provides wifi perfectly within about 20 feet.  I purchased two Aiport Expresses to extend the network. The airport expresses are set up with Network Mode = "Extend a wireless network", with the goal of having wifi available farther than 20 feet from the Airport time capsule.  According to the Airport Utility on my iMac and on my iPhone, this configuration is working perfectly.  Everything is plugged in and all the devices are showing green lights in Airport Utility, all in one daisy chain (airport timecapsule is connected to express 1 which is connected to express 2).  There's only one problem:  I get no wifi connection when I'm about 4 feet away from the airport express which is farthest from the time capsule.  The Airport Express has a green light, but I have no signal even 4 feet away from it.  It seems as if the Expresses aren't doing anything.  My wifi is still only available within 20 feet of the airport time capsule.  How can I be 4 feet from an Airport Express that has a green light (which is also displaying green in Airport Utility) and yet have no wifi?

You may not be aware that you can only "extend" one time.
Apple's extend setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel.  The Time Capsule would be the "hub" and each extending device resides at the end of a separate spoke.
The extending device at the end of the spoke communicates directly to the hub.
You can have additional extending devices, but each one connects directly to the hub.....not to another device at the end of another "spoke".
If your display in AirPort Utility displays a "chain", the last device is NOT extending anything.
In order for both of your Express devices to be working correctly, both of them will display as connecting directly to the Time Capsule. Both Express devices will be displayed on the same horizontal line side by side with dotted line connections to the Time Capsule.
Ideally, your Time Capsule would be located in a central location, so that each extending device would be located about the same distance from the Time Capsule.
If you have an AirPort Express closer to another Express that it is to the Time Capsule, it will connect to the Express....just as your display likely indicates.

  • I am trying to install a second airport express to extend my network. When I use the aiport utility it does not see the second airport express.

I am trying to install a second airport express to extend my network. When I use the aiport utility it does not see the second airport express.

Suggest that you perform a Factory Default Reset as follows:
    Pull the Express from power
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it an additonal 8-10 seconds while you plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Apple's instructions to do what you want are here:
It will often help to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Express for the setup. Once the Express is configured, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable and move the Express to the desired location.

Although an AirPort Extreme is shown as the extending device in the example, the setup for an AirPort Express is exactly the same

  • How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme? My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured" and my AirPort tool on my PC will not permit me to add my new Airport Extreme network (no network names to choose from)

How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme?
I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

    Hi
    Thanks for Swift reply.
Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.
    Please advise
    Regards
    Sigve

I have a perfectly good wi-fi setup but it will not detect my Aiport Express no matter what aI try. Help!

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.

  • TWO Aiport express in WDS network and NAS drive?

    Hi,
I know this question has been asked several times: one airport express cannot be connected to USB nor NAS drive. But what about TWO airport express?
We now have 2 airport express (b/g) at home presently participating in a WDS network with the following connections:
    - Aiport express #1 (WDS main) - living room
=> ethernet = connected to internet
=> jack = connected to HIFI
    - Airport express #2 (WDS remote) - office room
=> USB = connected to printer
My question is the following: would it be possible to connect the ethernet port of Aiport express #2 to a NAS drive? How has the Airport express #2 to be configured (WDS remote? WDS relay? Connection sharing= "bridge" or "distribute a range of IP"?) for this purpose?
I could not find any clear answer yet on this particular situation.
Thanks in advance for your help with this. I do not want to buy a NAS drive and realize that it does not work...
    Ludovic

My question is the following: would it be possible to connect the ethernet port of Aiport express #2 to a NAS drive?
    Yes that should work.
How has the Airport express #2 to be configured (WDS remote? WDS relay? Connection sharing= "bridge" or "distribute a range of IP"?) for this purpose?
Either WDS remote or relay should work. You do not want it distributing IP addresses. Configuring it as a WDS remote or relay should automatically prevent this setting.

  • My wi-fi worked fine on Airport Express two days ago.  Now the light is green, but I can't get the Internet on my satellite connection.  I've checked Network Preferences, Aiport Express menu, and the satellite tech support. The Ethernet connection works.

My wi-fi connection from my iPad via the Airport Express Base Station on my home computer worked just fine until yesterday morning.  I have a Macintosh G5 with a satellite connection.  I could not get an Internet connection.  After using the Network Preferences and Aiport Express applications several times, then unplugging and replugging in the computer, satellite modem and Airport Express module, checking the satellite dish for any obstructions, and so on, the computer still wouldn't connect to the Internet.  (The green light was on in the Airport Express module.)  I called the satellite company technical support division last night.  The tech couldn't find any problem with the satellite connection.  When I plugged the satellite modem cord directly into the Ethernet outlet on my computer, I could pick up the Internet.
Today, the Airport Express module still has a green light but still doesn't connect to the Internet.  The only thing I can think of is that lights went out for about 15 minutes yesterday morning.  All of my electronics, except the Aiport Express Base Station, are on surge protectors.  Why would the Airport Express module still have a green light if it was damaged by the electrical outage?
I bought the module in 2009.  I have never had problems with Apple equipment before this. Is this base station fixable?
    I would appreciate your suggestions.

Hello everyone.  I too have experienced the same problem Mary described starting on the same day she mentioned January 12.  I have a G5 iMac, a G5 mini-mac, and a G4 laptop.  They were all working fine but all have mostly the same problem now in that the G4 does not connect at all and the G5s connect once in a while after restarts but do not maintain the connection.  In my case there was no power interruption.  In fact, the G4 laptop was not even connected to the home power connection.  My iPad2 and iPhone 4s wireless work fine and a wireless PC and Android tablet work fine as well.  The G5 and G4 work fine on an ethernet connection. ISP tech support (AT&T u-Verse) was very generous with their time in trying to solve my problem although it was established early on that their connection and equipment was working fine and that the problem was with my computers.  They walked me through a manual reset of all the particulars on IP addresses etc. so the problem was not related to that either. In the end ISP tech support concluded that the problem must lie with the Airport driver.  For some reason it changes the IP addresses to an incorrect address so it cannot connect.  Indeed when I tried the diagnostics on the G4 I got a window Pop-up that said an application had reset my settings. (In retrospect I seem to recall that I may have gotten that same message early on with the G5s but at that time I did not think much about it and went about trying to reset the settings but that process never concluded well) I think that the problem may be that there must have been an update of the Airport software that was not backward compatible with the G5 and older Macs.  I mention all this for two reasons.  First, perhaps someone out there who knows better than I do how to bring this to Apple's attention and perhaps they will address this.  Second, I would be curious to know whether there is anyway one can return a configuration on Macs to some earlier time period (as you can on PCs) when everything worked and then leave it that way foregoing any subseqent upgrades or any subsequent apps?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.
