I recently purchased a Airport Express and I'm trying to hook it up. I would like to use a hard drive and printer on the usb port via usb hub. I did some reading and found out you cannot use a hard drive. Is this true? I think you can do this with an Airport Extreme. If so I some how got confused and bought the wrong thing. I would like to still use the printer but not the ehternet dsl option. Is this possible, or do you have to have an ehternet calbe plugged into the port for everything else to work? Also my computer will not recognize the Airport Express. It did at first but now it wont. Any help would be great. Also if I want to hook up a usb drive and access it wirelessly what is the cheapest route? Thanks

Yes, this is true. You cannot connect a USB hard drive to the USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX). (ref: Uses for the USB port of Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express)

Yes, if you want to connect USB hard drive(s), you will need the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) or Time Capsule (TC).

Yes. You can either configure the AX as a stand alone wireless router (its default mode) or reconfigure it to "join an existing wireless network" as a wireless client to share an attached USB printer.
Also my computer will not recognize the Airport Express. It did at first but now it wont.
Remember to connect to the AX's wireless network, before attempting to access it with the AirPort Utility. If this still doesn't work, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the AX, and then, try the utility to access it again.
Also if I want to hook up a usb drive and access it wirelessly what is the cheapest route?
Exchange your AX for an AEBSn.

My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.

You already have the software installed that you need if you have 10.8.2.
If AirPort Utility cannot find the Express, that is another matter. More software is not needed. More troublehooting is needed.
Power up the Express for a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a heading of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express
What happens?

My wi-fi worked fine on Airport Express two days ago. Now the light is green, but I can't get the Internet on my satellite connection. I've checked Network Preferences, Aiport Express menu, and the satellite tech support. The Ethernet connection works.

My wi-fi connection from my iPad via the Airport Express Base Station on my home computer worked just fine until yesterday morning. I have a Macintosh G5 with a satellite connection. I could not get an Internet connection. After using the Network Preferences and Aiport Express applications several times, then unplugging and replugging in the computer, satellite modem and Airport Express module, checking the satellite dish for any obstructions, and so on, the computer still wouldn't connect to the Internet. (The green light was on in the Airport Express module.) I called the satellite company technical support division last night. The tech couldn't find any problem with the satellite connection. When I plugged the satellite modem cord directly into the Ethernet outlet on my computer, I could pick up the Internet.
Today, the Airport Express module still has a green light but still doesn't connect to the Internet. The only thing I can think of is that lights went out for about 15 minutes yesterday morning. All of my electronics, except the Aiport Express Base Station, are on surge protectors. Why would the Airport Express module still have a green light if it was damaged by the electrical outage?
I bought the module in 2009. I have never had problems with Apple equipment before this. Is this base station fixable?
I would appreciate your suggestions.

Hello everyone. I too have experienced the same problem Mary described starting on the same day she mentioned January 12. I have a G5 iMac, a G5 mini-mac, and a G4 laptop. They were all working fine but all have mostly the same problem now in that the G4 does not connect at all and the G5s connect once in a while after restarts but do not maintain the connection. In my case there was no power interruption. In fact, the G4 laptop was not even connected to the home power connection. My iPad2 and iPhone 4s wireless work fine and a wireless PC and Android tablet work fine as well. The G5 and G4 work fine on an ethernet connection. ISP tech support (AT&T u-Verse) was very generous with their time in trying to solve my problem although it was established early on that their connection and equipment was working fine and that the problem was with my computers. They walked me through a manual reset of all the particulars on IP addresses etc. so the problem was not related to that either. In the end ISP tech support concluded that the problem must lie with the Airport driver. For some reason it changes the IP addresses to an incorrect address so it cannot connect. Indeed when I tried the diagnostics on the G4 I got a window Pop-up that said an application had reset my settings. (In retrospect I seem to recall that I may have gotten that same message early on with the G5s but at that time I did not think much about it and went about trying to reset the settings but that process never concluded well) I think that the problem may be that there must have been an update of the Airport software that was not backward compatible with the G5 and older Macs. I mention all this for two reasons. First, perhaps someone out there who knows better than I do how to bring this to Apple's attention and perhaps they will address this. Second, I would be curious to know whether there is anyway one can return a configuration on Macs to some earlier time period (as you can on PCs) when everything worked and then leave it that way foregoing any subseqent upgrades or any subsequent apps?

Using Aiport Express and internet at the same time?

I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this subject please?
I've got a Macbook running through a wireless BT ADSL modem. I have also managed to connect the Macbook to my Aiport Express to allow me to wirelessly pipe iTunes through my stereo. I am aware that you cannot run both at once (i.e pipe music and browse the web) due to the Macbook being able to be only connected to one wireless network at a time.
My questions is whether there is anyway round this? If I bought an Aiport Extreme base station, connected that to my wireless router and used the Airport Extreme base station for the wireless connection would I be able to add the Aiport Express to that wireless network and subsequently have the internet and the Aiport Express running on the same wireless network - hence being able to pipe the music wirelessly and also browse the web at the same time?
Or is there another way round it?
Any info anyone could offer would be a great help

Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode,put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

all the configurations I see use a cable from the aiport express to the stereo.

Sorry, but no. You must connect an analog or optical digital cable to be able to send an audio signal from the Express.

Get 9672 error when adding an Epson 7800 connected to an aiport express

I get a 9672 error when I try to add our epson 7800. It is a rendevous printer connected to an airport express. The aiport express is an extension of our aiport network base which is an airport extream. I am trying to add it to a G5 with osx 10.3.9.
I can add it to our mac minis that run 10.4 with no problem.
I tried deleting the driver and reinstalling the latest driver from epson and deleting the printer preferences.
It shows up as a rendevous printer but when I try and add it I get a 9672 error.

The problem seemed to be that we were printing to two epson Printers, a cx5400 and a 7800.
I repaired permissions.
Then I deleted the epson print drivers by putting the epson folder which is in the Library folder in the trash. Next I deleted the printer preferences by putting all the apple.print files in the users, home folder, library, preferenced folder in the trash and rebooted.
I had to reinstall the printer driver for the 5400 first, It requires a reboot, then reinstall the 7800 print driver. Then I connected the 7800 from my g5 via usb, added the printer and printed. Next I put the put the 7800 on the Airport Express, added the printer and printed. I then printed to the 5400 and deleted the printer I defined to print via usb from the G5.
Now it works. I tried to install the drivers and add the printers in many different orders and it seemed to be very important that the order above be followed. If I didn't I would get the 9672 error when I tried to add the 7800 or a communications error when I tried to print to the 7800.
Support at epson let me know how to deleted the printer driver.

Your iMac comes with AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). You can open it from the Launchpad by going to the "Utilities" or "Other" folder

ITunes cannot find Aiport Express via D-link

iTunes cannot find Aiport Express.
iMac and Airport Express both connected to D-link wireless router (DI-524UP). Can see Airport Express on iMac Airport Utilities, and can communicate (do changes) via the D-link network. iMac working fine with D-link for internett access also.Have set up Aiport Express to serve as extra speakers in iTunes. Airport Express connected to stereo with cable. Can choose the external speakers in iTunes. Think this means iTunes also must be communicating with Airport Express, because If I change the name of the externals speakers in Airport Express, it also changes in iTunes after clicking "update" and the Airport Express re-starts. However after choosing the external speakers in iTunes and starting a song iTunes is seeking the speakers (Airport Express) without finding it. All devices are connected to the same D-link network.
Working fine when I set up Airport Express with its own network and connecting it with iMac. Also I could connect my iPhone to my iTunes library (remote app.) This is not working in the d-Link network either.
It's a drag to have to change both the PC and the iPhone to another network every time I want to play musik on the stereo. This is why I am trying to get everything to work together in the same network (D-Link).
Somebody having met this problem before?

Correction: Downloaded an update for the D-Link, and now the iPhone is working with iMac for remote control of iTunes.

I have recently purchased a Time Capsule 2T for my new iMac (which is located downstairs in my office). The Time Capsule wireless reaches to my back porch. I have my stereo equipment upstairs, which controls the speakers around the house. Before I purchase an Airport Express to plug upstairs into the stereo equipment, I wanted to know if it was possible to control my iPhone 4s (while on wi-fi) through the Airport Express to my stereo for sound around the house. I do not want to control my iTunes on my iMac, (I already know about the Remote App), but I want to control my iTunes and Pandora, ect. from my iPhone 4s through the Airport Express upstairs to the stereo it is plugged into. Please advise me the best way to accomplish my goal of playing sound FROM my iPhone 4s (anywhere in the wifi range) to the stereo upstairs that is away from the iMac and Time Capsule.

With the iPhone ios 5.0 came AirPlay which will accomplish what you are trying to do quite well, with the help of the AirPort Express. The AirPort Express can be connected to your network with ethernet or over wifi. You need to configure the AirPort Express with a computer first (Mac or PC is fine, download the controller program from Apple.com) Once the AirPort Express is configured to join your wireless network, join the same network with your iPhone and start the ipod app to play a song. In the bar next to the volume control on the iPhone, a box with an up arrow will appear. tapping that will list the available AirPort devices. Choose the AiPort Express device you configured to send the song from your iPhone to the AirPort Express. The AirPort Express can be attached to your stereo with a 3.5 head jack to optical cable (available at radioShack) - or 3.5 to RCA connectors.
If you receive an incoming call AirPlay will mute the song and let the ring be heard over the stereo (can be nice or bothersome...) and pick back up in the song when you end the call. The wifi range for the original AirPort Express wasnt the best, but the newest version is better. (Note) multiple airports can connected straight to speakers throughout the house and be controlled from the iPhone, name each device unique to its location and have a slick way to control surround sound...

I recently bought the Apple Hi-Fi and love it, but was curious if I would somehow be able to interface the Aiport Express to my hi-fi so that i could have my music whever I wanted in the house. I already have a wireless router in my house, so i was wondering if I would be able to transmit over my router to the aiport, which could be plugged into my Hi-Fi via the 3.5mm jack in the back. Anyone thought of this, or it is unfeasable to want to do.

You can use your existing wireless router to transmit to an Airport Express.

Aiport Express availability

Anyone else notice that the Aiport Express is out of stock at 'virtually' all internet retail stores? My AE died yesterday and I was going to do an exchange on Amazon under their 30-day window but their best estimate for availability is October.

Yes, I went to the Apple store in Los Gatos California and they didn't have any Airport Express in stock. I asked if that meant that there is a coming product refresh and the employee mentioned the Apple Event tomorrow. I don't mean he suggested the Airport Express is going to be updated tomorrow, he just limited himself to note that there is an event tomorrow in which most likely new software and products are going to be announced. I also checked by phone with the Apple Store in Santa Clara California (Valley Fair) and they also didn't have any. I asked again if the person knew if the product is going to be updated soon but this person had no idea.
I am not sure what's going on. I'll wait and see if there is any announcement tomorrow. I just needed an extra Airport Express to extend my wireless-n network. I can live a few days without this.

Aiport Express - Ethernet - Direct TV

I have an Aiport Express linked to an Aiport Extreme. Everything is working. I have Direct TV which allows Video on Demand if connected to an internet source. For some reason the Direct TV is not recognizing that the Ethernet port is there. I have read different things on the Express ethernet port . . . is it a LAN port? or NOt? Why doesn't it work???

In order for the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet to "act" like a LAN port, the AX needs to be configured as either a relay/remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) with your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
