Air cooling q6600

So I am looking into overclocking my q6600 from it's stock 2.4 ghz to 3.0 ghz. I was wondering what I should be looking at for cpu cooling. I would prefere to stick with air cooling as I am using an ANTEC 900 Gaming case. Any suggestions (bonus if I can install it without having to remove the motherboard). Thanks

Time for some new cooling.

so what do u guys think i got 10 days or so till i can buy any thing

Hello, just to note, that Air-cooled conversion was for the DPs, not the Dual Cores like the Quad, that produce much more heat.
I also think 70 to 75 degrees Celsius is not acceptable.

  • Air Cooled or Liquid Cooled.

I have been reading a lot on line and I was wondering if My dual core 2.3 G5 has air cooling or Liquid cooling. I have never had to open my case except to add Ram and change hard drives. I have a dead Mother Board and was just wondering. thanks.

    Explain these please...

Lightning does strike twice. We had another G5 (dual 2.3 GHz, May 2005) acting strange yesterday (Quicktime movie freezing up, cannot shut down/restart via Apple Remote Desktop), so we went to the comm closet to check it (another pampered G5 in a cooled, dust free environment).
This one's leak is a bit different " slow enough that the coolant has been crystallizing and drying very quickly, over a longer period of time.
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/powermacg5/topic4243.html
There's been debate on some other models like the "Late 2005" dual-core 2.3GHz - one owner reported a leak here (in Nov. 2007 mail) but three other owners have said their dual-core 2.3 were air-cooled, despite having the 'liquid warning' stencil on the PS. (From the photos one 2.3GHz owner sent, it clearly appeared to be air-cooled, not LCS.)
"bought my G5 Dual core 2.3ghz with 4GB of RAM powermac Nov 2005 (He originally said Nov. 2004, but the dual-core 2.3GHz was a "late 2005" series) and on the 18th of august 2007 it shut off and stated ticking... I tried to restart which didn't work. So I called mac support. I opened the side panel and noticed liquid on the rear bottom "foot"

  • Case/CPU Temps @ Air cooling

    Yo guys,
Iam just curious how did you set up your rig ( Only Air cooling ).
And of cause what temperatures you get ....
    My setup :
Chieftec midi tower - this is at 3,2 ghz
2 x silent 80mm fans intake at the backside
2 x silent 80mm fans outake at the front side
    Zalmann7000cnps aicu
    NB msi stock light fan
    Idle ( windows desktop )
    CPU @ 30c
    MB   @ 30c
    Load ( midnight club 2 or 3dmark)
    CPU @ 50-55c
    MB   @ 39-43c
I dont like my mainboard temps but probably my cpu fan is blowing all the warm temps directly on the mb sensor.

Like alot of people in the first couple of years overclocking/modding PCs, I got a little Fan-Happy. I replaced 6 of the 7 case fans in my Thermaltake case w/ 2 80mm Tornados front (attached to PSU fan RPM control), 2 Aerocool High CFM 80mm side, and 2 Coolermaster High RPM 80mm back. Plus the Zalman 7000 AlCu, and a 120mm on the inside of my Hard Drive cage (otherwise air from front tends to get trapped in the drive cage and not provide any flow toward the rear)
If I trusted the various monitoring sensor apps I'd be very pleased..
CPU 27-33C @ Idle & never beyond 48-50C at full load (except during a couple of heatwaves we in Northern Cali had a while back)
Case is usually in the low to mid 20s except on really hot days, at night it can drop to 18C.
The Thermaltake CPU sensor basically confirmed these temps when I had it attached, but I stll think of them only as a guideline.

  • Lightweight but functional air cooler for 15" MBP

I like to use my MBP in bed sometimes to watch movies.
I want to use a cooler for it, but one that won't make the 15" MBP heavier than it already is.
Any recommendations on a cooler that works great but doesn't weigh too much for a 15" MBP?
    thanks!

Don't use your MBP in bed. It belongs on a hard, flat surface. Bedclothes will impede the flow of air into and out of a fan-cooling device just as they impede its flow through your MBP, and no fan-cooling device is going to weigh much less than a pound.
In short, use your machine the way it's designed to be used, and it won't need any extra cooling.

  • Macbook Air cooling fan surges hugely for minutes at a time.

For the past 3 months now, my MacBook Air, OSX 10.9.3, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, simply surges to a fever pitch for about 1 minute and then dies back away.
The system could even be in a quiet state running no unusual software, not challenging simulations, nothing.
I have IT staff looking at me saying stuff like...
    - "Is your system going to explode?"
    or
note realizing that is has a flash ram drive, "your hard drive is done for."
The fan works normally at a low pace from time to time in its normal work.  But, simply takes off occassionally, what gives?

    If gaming or watching videos
    NORMAL
If it rapidly surges while doing the same thing for a long time, RESET THE SMC
    RESET SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
if same, then you have a damaged/ defective heat sensor tripping fan.

so... now what? is it stable for gaming/benching or only good enough for booting and taking a screenshot? because my best was 278MHz with a 2.8c 800FSB, and that was only good enough for booting and taking a screenshot.
my highest safe speed was 268MHz. i could bench it. got me a lower score than 243MHz though, because of the crappy RAM i had back then.

  • Air cooled 4.1ghz 1090T on nf980-g65

So I left my window open and noticed how very cold it was in here so I decided to push for 4.16ish ghz and I got it stable with no real increase in temps lol been running under a full load F@H on cpu for a few hours now here are some of the temps. This however will more than likely be clocked back to close to stock if the weather gets hotter, cause I will not run AC ever! Anyways here are some pics.
Notice even with the cold temps my evga 560ti still got hot vs the rest of the system under a few hours of 99% gpu folding..... my roommates MSI twin frozer 560ti can do 10 hrs of gpu folding and stay really cool... WTG MSI on the frozer
ps the evga is at stock clock of a 560ti because I was testing it aginst my roommate twin frozer and results show his did out perform mine by 4-7% respectively...

LOL you are right on it was 0c or 33F I could see my breath lol its now like 44f or 5c
Few more hours of folding mixed with some other tests
I turned my gas off to my heater already hehe so dress warm if youre coming to sope's
PS. Henry I'll trade ya my phenom x2 555 BE and my Evga 560ti for your MSI 560ti GE

If you are keeping it on 3.6 GHz and you have DDR2-6400 memory you shouldn't need to unlink the FSB. The Q6600 G0 CPU's I have worked with, had a sweetspot at 3.6 GHz and was far more reliable at that speed, than on other frequencies in the range up to this spot.
You should not go for a silent version CPU cooler on this. The CPU require a lot of cooling. Find a cheap watercooling kit, or very big air-cooler with adjustable fans (it might be noisy). The Zalman I used was a 9700, and I had it running at full-speed making a lot of noise. Later on I changed to use a Thermal Take Kandalf LCS watercooling chassis which was really good for the setup. Kept CPU and my 8800 gtx at around 50c and it was quiet.
The only problem I had on this system was a NorthQ 450W PSU. It couldn't really handle things, so all my problems with crashes and BSODs that I initially had with the system, went away when changing PSU to a thermaltake toughpower 850w.
Mine did about 4GHz, but I never really found a way too cool it properly at 4 GHz. Another thing I remember is, that the Q6600 gets unstable around 85c+, and is not really usable in that range.
I would love to take it to 3.6 or higher.
I see a lot of people doing that.
But, I don't trust this Arctic Freezer 7 to go that high.
Even at 3.42Ghz it is sometimes unstable under load.
I have Core Temp set to put it to sleep at 78C.
I would like to be able to keep it under 50 or 60C on these long jobs.
It's tempting to consider water cooling, because the better air coolers just won't fit in there.
I also have to consider noise.
Are the pumps noisy for water cooling?
Recently, my system has started going into standby or sleep if I walk away too long.
I come back and find all the fans as high as they are before booting.
This is making it harder to abandon the computer when it's on a long job.
I don't know where to fix that - BIOS or Win7?

I recently overclocked to 3.42ghz by cloning the settings of someone with the same hardware in this thread.

After 5 minutes, the hottest core reached 70C.

  • MSI P43T-C51 or P45T-C51 for overclocking Q6600 ??

    Hello everyone..
My current system specs are :
    Q6600 2.4ghz (b3 )
    2gb transcend jet ram 800Mhz
    250gb HDD,
    500W Cooler master Extreme power
    8600GT 256MB XFX GPU

I plan on upgrading my pc by buying msi mobo & i am on tight budget too plus i plan to upgrade to 460gtx 1gb hawk too so that i can squeez out more juice from my Q6600 for 2 more years.
Have many questions today & my questions are :
    1. MSI P43T-C51 or P45T-C51 which among these is a good overclocker?
    2. Should i go for ddr2 set up or get P45-C51 which is ddr3 setup .
    3. Will B3 processor get stable 3.4ghz or 3.6ghz OC on any of these mobo ?
    4. Which cpu cooler should i buy ??
    5. Last but not the least will Q6600 will be a bottle neck for 460gtx ?
Please help me sort things out..
    Thank You..

I don't know, since I never tested these boards personally.  Both are not really "High End" boards, so there aren't really that many users using them for serious OC.

    2. Should i go for ddr2 set up or get P45-C51 which is ddr3 setup .
I'd go for DDR3.  If you upgrade to another board in the future, DDR2 modules probably won't be of use to you anymore.

    3. Will B3 processor get stable 3.4ghz or 3.6ghz OC on any of these mobo ?
There really is no definate answer to that, really as two different exemplars of the same processor or board may show different OC behaviour.

What is your budget for a CPU Cooler?  Do you prefer air-cooling or perhaps water-cooling?  Check out the Corsair H50 and H70 CPU coolers (both are pre-built water coolers.  You just have to install them like a heatsink and don't worry about much more.
