Air Disk disconnection

Hi everyone,
I've just bought a Airport Extreme N, and I already have a problem with AirDisk.
I can see the shares on the network, mount them, but none can remain mounted more than a few minutes.
The logs just say: "Disk sd0 (...) plugged in" oi "Disk sd0 (...) unlugged".
When I plug the usb drive right to my iBook, everything is just... well... working as expected.
The hard drive has been formated in HFS+, its usb enclosure is a generic one, but brand new also.
Thanks in advance,
Xavier Cambar

I have the same problem I think. My air disk is there for a little bit then disappears (if I'm reading your post correctly). The problem with mine is my drive going to sleep. Network drives can not go to sleep. If they do your AEBS will not be able to wake it up the same way pluging it directly into your computer would. It will simply disappear (or lock up your finder for a nice amount of time). Good luck finding a way to stop your HD from sleeping. I've been working on it for 2 weeks now and can not find a way to do it. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. but in the meantime I either have to get a new enclosure. Or wait for Apple to solve it.

i have an airport extreme and an express and after three days of fiddling almost everything is working. but on the pc i can open the air disk. in the info box the pc sees itincorrectly as a phat 32 disk even though it is hfs+. i am able to mount and open it but when it opens there are no files visible. if i plug the drive directly into the pc its all good. through the extreme network - cant see the files.

  • Suddenly, my wireless connection (including Air Disk) is acting all screwy.

My airport express sometimes shows three of four airport bars and my connection becomes very intermittent. When the signal is full strnegth, everything seems to work, with the exception of my Air Disk. It simply won't mount anymore. I have never had these problems until the most recent updates. However, under a wired cnnection, everything works fine.
Is there some sort of a bug going on with all the latest Apple-latest wireless and airport drivers? This is pretty annoying.

I just had the same problem. Downgrading the airport firmware from 7.2 to 7.1 fixed it for me.

Why is Time machine saying backup disk disconnected? Using MBP 17" Lion 10.7

Do you have an external drive connected?
If you do has it gone into sleep mode? There is a setting in the OS to put drives to sleep if they aren't being used. Energy Saver "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".
Also most external drives have a built in sleep function that if they aren't being accessed for a period of time they go to sleep by themselves.

my mac book air suddely disconnects many times the wifi while using wifi

Lots of things can impact wifi connections.  If you are at the marginal edge of the wifi range (which depends not only on distance, but what's between you and the transmitter) you may find the connection dropping in and out.  Sometimes a minor repositioning of the computer or transmitter can solve the issue.
As well, interference can also create problems.  For instance, microwave ovens are really good at disrupting 2.4Ghz signals, and that the frequency used most often in wifi routers--so if someone turns on the microwave and it's between you and the transmission point it won't be surprising if the connection drops.  As well, metal blocks the signal fairly effectively, so if (say) ductwork is between the CPU and the wireless router there can be problems.
Finally, I've run into some combos of devices and routers that just don't seem to like each other :-) .  That said, I've not hit that problem with either Air I'm running (an 11" and a 13"), though obviously I've not tried to connect them to every type of router out there.
Just this week I was at a hotel and in my room the hotel wifi was "interesting" with every device I tried (iPhone, Android phone, Kindle Fire, iPad and the two Airs) dropping connection regularly from the work desk.  Turned out if I moved the devices over to the nightstand on the other end of the room (not the best work environment) all of the problems went away, so it clearly was a signal issue and the exact layout of that room and the hotel's wifi.
If the machine has a problem when positioned close to a variety of routers, then I'd suspect a hardware issue with the wifi card in the Air and get that checked by Apple.  Similarly, if your problem is with your home router, I'd check to see if other devices also are getting dropped, since there could be a hardware issue on the router.

  • Windows can't find air disk

I have been searching for a long time now and can't find any answer how get my windows xp to connect to air disk..! Can anyone help would be greatly appreciate.
( I use air disk to share data in office, not to syn or anything )
    Thx

You need to install the Airport Base Station Disk Agent software that comes on the installer disk with the Airport Base Station. You might be able to download the software from Apple, too. This will put an icon on your system tray that allows you to access the AirDisk.

  • 2 Airports and 4 Air Disks - Advice before I buy

    Hi all,
A little bit of background. My wife and I are both film buffs and have stacks of DVDs. Quite often we watch a movie in bed using our laptop streaming MP4 files. Works well. However, I have quite a lot of external HDDs hanging off my lovely iMac and this defeats the purpose of the beautiful design
Here is what I have: downstairs: broadband and an airport extreme.
Here is what I would like to do: broadband and airport extreme downstairs. A further extreme in my spare room with 4 air disks attached for backups and streaming movies to any of my machines. Furthermore, I would like the two extremes and their disks to be seen as one both from a wireless connection point of view and also access to the air disks.
What I mean is can I connect to my extreme downstairs and still access my air disks on my second extreme upstairs and can I connect to my extreme upstairs and access my broadband downstairs.
Sorry it is a bit long winded but want to make sure I explain why I want this: my wife does not want our living room looking like a plate of spaggetti made of USB leads.
    Regards
    SteveGB13

You could get a second Airport Extreme Base Station, configure it as a remote base station, and configure your existing Base Station as a main base station. You would then have a single wireless network with everything on it accessible from anywhere.
    A few other considerations:
    1. What is the total amount of file storage you need? You might consider getting the newly released Airport Time Capsule. It has a built in 1TB hard drive, which might be sufficient for all your needs.
    2. The performance (with video streaming) is an unknown until you set this all up. The main/remote base station setup I described above will reduce by half your wireless network's maximum possible data rate, which could be significant for video streaming performance.

  • Callers are intermittently getting dead air then disconnected when arriving on the CVP !!

Callers are intermittently getting dead air then disconnected when arriving on the CVP ,
Is the problem with Voice Gateway (Ingress)/Gateway Device issue in CVP server ??
    Thanks !!!
    Shridhar Reddy

First thing to check would be Router Log Viewer to see if you have missed a Dialed Number - Call Type association on one of your CVP PIMs. If the gateway sends the call to a Proxy which then distributes to Call Servers, and not all the PIM Dialed Numbers are associated with the Call Type that runs your Scheduled Script, some will fail will all others will work.
You need to provide more information for us to have a stab at a remedy.

  • Protecting Air Disk

Loving my new AEBSn with AirDisk, and figuring out all the capabilities. But one problem I encountered was this:
The data on my AirDisk feels very insecure. When I delete an item, it gives a warning message and then deletes it forever! Is there any way to set up protections on my disk so that I can add to the disk, use files on the disk, but have extra protection against accidental deletion of files?

With a Mirrored RAID, if you delete a file, it is deleted from both disks. So that wouldn't solve this particular issue.
Perhaps a solution would be attaching two disks to the AEBs, then creating a special folder on the computer you are using. You could write an applescript that copies anything added to that folder to both drives simultaneously, then removes it from that folder. You could then use the Mac OS folder action feature to make sure the script ran whenever a file was saved there.
Not super convenient, but it does save the file redundantly. When you open a file from an Air Disk you would then have to remember to do a 'Save As' to save it to the scripted folder.

  • Air Disk + BitTorrent?

I've done a bit of searching but I just haven't been able to find a straight answer. I currently utilize a 500GB MyBook (Powered / 7200RPM / USB2.0) for all of my TimeMachine backups and for random assorted files, mostly larger movies and the like. I'm also an avid BitTorrent user. At any given time, I probably have about 200 (legal, of course : p ) torrents seeding within Transmission. The bad thing is, this takes up enormous amounts of space, and my 120GB internal HDD is starting to burst at the seams. My question is, is Air Disk a reliable storage medium for seeding torrents? If through wireless n i can get the same speeds as a can with a USB 2.0 drive, or at least something close, I'll be switching to that method. So much more convenient than being physically tethered to a drive. Thanks in advance for any info!

USB 2.0 Hi-speed is rated for a maximum speed of 480Mbps. The real-world, sustained speed is significantly lower. 802.11n has a maximum transfer speed of 300Mbps; real-world, sustained speed is also lower.
So 802.11n would be the bottleneck to your transfer speed. Connecting directly to the computer through USB would definitely yield faster speeds.
All that being said, if 802.11n gives you 50Mbps sustained (just a random number I picked), that's still around 6MB (megabytes) per second. In all likelihood, your Internet connection would not consistently be running at that speed.
It's generally safe to say that the Internet connection itself would be the biggest bottleneck; making the other issues moot points. However, why not give it a shot and see how it works?

  • Air Disk management

How are we supposed to handle the Air Disk with the APBS?
For example, the Air Disk is running and mounted on my Mac. Then, I can eject it but if I turn the HD off, I hear the heads click out, as if it was still in service. So is there a way to manage this or is it supposed to run days n' night?
Thanks for your opinions on this.

Thanks for your reply DaddyPaycheck. Yes, I think that Energy saving is a good point here (for me). Even if my Airdisk enclosure has a fan, it was pretty hot after running for about 50 hrs.
Maybe Apple should give more options to the Airdisk configurations in the Airport Utility as with Energy Saver in system Preferences. Then we can choose to shut down the Airdisk when not use for a ∆t delay. Another way could be with an "augmented" version of Airport Disk Utility.
Also, I didn't find any documentations on a full Airdisk management. They only explain, in the installation guide, how to turn it on but - strangely - not how to turn it off. What if you're not at home for a couples of weeks and want to store your Airdisk HD in another place?
The only thing I can see is to unplug the USB and replug it directly to the computer. Then do the "traditional" ejecting procedure. But this is passably annoying.
Airdisk function is quite new for Apple, we'll give them time to improve it.

  • Air Disk Problems: either miniStack v2.5 or Western Digital's 1.0TB Green?

Anyone still having Air Disk problems with either the miniStack 2.5 or the WD10EADS?
Using it as a Air Disk/hub with AEBSn (firmware 7.4.2) connecting to MBP1.83 running 10.4.10. It worked fine in this configuration for almost 2 months. The drive does not appear in finder or disk utility even when connected directly through USB or Firewire, so I'm sending the ministack back to OWC. I was just checking here to make sure that it wasn't something on Apple's end before I head to the local UPS store.

    Sorry, I'm using 10.4.11

  • Air Disk still not working. . .

OK, so my air disk was working but like many, not so much now. . .i have read many of the posting but nothing has worked so far. Can anyone forward here info that made their air disk work? I am in a MAcBook Pro, AE, System 10.5.1, ( the remote disk was working with this AE before Leopard. Not nada. Please advise, please.

    Disk Utility works...
It just takes a long time.
You don't say what version of Leopard you are running and it is not in your profile....
10.5 take about 1 hour or more to repair permissions..
10.5.1 takes from 30 minutes to an hour approximately...
Give it time, it will finish...
With 10.5.1 the blue bar says less than a minute and stays there for many minutes...
This bar should say "Less than an hour" instead of minute.......

  • Exciting times with the Air Disk: Drive format and Remote access

What a great addition to the Air Port.
Tell me this, since the Air Port extreme is Mac+PC compatible, can my external drive be formated NTFS and still work with a Mac on the network?
Also, can someone point me to a resource for accessing the Air Disk remotely? This sounds fantastic!! I keep my iTunes library on an external drive, with Air Disk I could access (stream?) the files remotely, no?
    Steve

Apple has not published any of these details AND the devices haven't shipped yet.
So no one here knows the answers to these questions.
