Air Drop not in Sidebar (late 2011 iMac)

I have an iMac later 2011. When I originally used it Air Drop was on the Sidebar. However, I have not seen it in the recent updates. Now I have a MBP with Air Drop and really need to use it.
Howe can I get Air Drop back on the iMac?

This should have been in Mountain Lion, as both computers have ML. I reposted there. If necessary, can someone delete this post?

Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission.  Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions?  I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account.  It did not change how files are output.

  • Late 2011 iMac Causes USBs to be Write Protected and Cannot Reformat?

    Hi all,
I have been having an issue with my Late 2011 iMac - every once and a while upon insertion of the USB, nothing can be transferred onto the USB, however existing data on the USB can be transferred off. For the first several times, the Mac will allow me to erase and reformat the USB - however after ~4 - 5 reformats, the USB will no longer allow me to reformat it - either through a Mac or a PC. Recently, the same problem also happened to my Micro SD card and I'm getting pretty stumped.
Currently running 10.8.2 - however problem also occured using 10.7.
I do use a Belkin 4 USB port extender connected to my Mac via an old USB 1.0 cable.
Can provide screenshots, any help is much appreciated
    Thanks
    Aaron

    What -rc & -d do.
    From: The fsck_hfs manual page.
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages /man8/fsck_hfs.8.html
-d      Display debugging information.  This option may provide useful information when fsck_hfs cannot repair a damaged file system.
-r      Rebuild the catalog btree.  This is synonymous with -Rc.
-R flags Rebuilds the requested btree.  The following flags are supported:
                             a       Attribute btree
                             c       Catalog btree
                             e       Extents overflow btree
I had the same problem as you but unfortunately "fsck_hfs -rc -d /dev/disk0s2" is failing saying: "The volume   could not be verified completely." I believe it's supposed to be telling me the partition's name (normally "Macintosh HD") between 'volume' and 'could' because there's 3 spaces in between the words.
"fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2" is failing with the same error.
I tried "fsck_hfs -r -d /dev/disk0s2" since the c appears redundant with a lowercase R. and it again says it cannot be verified completely and adds "volume check failed with error 7". Which unfortunately is not documented on the fsck_hfs man page!
Unfortunately for me, Diskwarrior still can't see my busted Mac OS partition.

  • Ios 7 air drop not working with mountain lion air drop

Hi, didn't see an iOS 7 forum, so I'm posting it here since I was testing it out on my iPhone 5.
I tried to use air drop to share photos b/w my iPhone and my MBP running mountain lion, both has air drop enabled, but I couldn't see either on the air drop window.
is iOS 7 air drop not compatible with OSX air drop??
bluetooth and wifi are on for both machines.
    thanks

I have a Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Folio i5.  Also, even before reading your suggestions, I moved my phone hand set away from the iPad.  There aren't any other sources within 10 feet although the phone base is within 30 feet.  The WiFi router is about 5 feet away.  Haven't had a chance to "troubleshoot" the connection.
Have you any suggestions for Air Drop or Air Print?  My Pixma MP 450 which in excellent working order isn't compatable with either OS 10.9.x or iOS 7.
Canon suggested a Pixma MG 3520 which was hellatious to set up, requiring a big download and both a USB cable and Ethernet connection to the router, and isn't working with the iPad.
Clearly, technological "advancements" are for teeny boppers who spend their time taking phone pictures, sending mindless messages and listening to music.  Oh, to be 14 again.
Sorry about the bitters.  Rare opportunity to vent to adults.

  • Late 2011 Imac SL DVD Boot

I have a late December 2011 iMac. I wanted to help a friend troubleshoot a problem he was having getting his Older G5 to start from an install disk.
He is in antoher state. I decided to take my retail Snow Leopard install disk and pop it into my Imac just to go through the motions of booting up from the install disk. I wanted simply to access disk utility in this case. His issue was a question ? on his screen and I wanted him to access this untility. Well I wasn't able to boot from the disk. In fact, It actually crashed the iMac with a Kernal panic on the third try. I put the disk in an earlier MBP Pro and it booted just fine. Both machines are running Lion 10.7.2. Am I to assume the new iMac will not allow a boot from an Snow Leopard DVD?

Most likely the version on the Snow Leopard DVD is not late enough to boot the iMac. It would take 10.6.4 or later depending on which iMac model. The latest ones need a build of 10.6.6.

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

  • Apple DVD player not working on Mid 2011 iMac running 10.7.2

I have a 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 iMac which came with Lion preinstalled.  When I insert a DVD, Apple's DVD player comes up with the following error:
"A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"
The DVD player works.  I can play DVDs using VLC, and I can use it to burn in iDVD, but Apple's own DVD player simply will not recognize it.  I hoped this problem might be solved when I upgraded to 10.7.2, but alas it has not.
Does anyone know how to fix or work around this issue?  This computer is used daily for my media-heavy job, so leaving it somewhere for service is not really feasible unless I'm completely unable to work on it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the player and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • Air drop not working

so the air drop from the bottom of the screen. It takes many times to bring it up. It I can try many times and it will not come up. but them it will. the top dropper works very well and quickly every time.

I have been experimenting and it appears the receiving phone has to be brought out of sleep, but not unlocked for the the device to appear in airdrop.
It also appears that pressing the Airdrop buttom on control center doesn't turn on bluetooth as stated in the manual.  Turning it on on both phones seems to fix the problem.  It uses bluetooth to find compatible devices, and then either wi-fi or bluetooth for the transfer.  Need to test further.

  • 24in LED Cinema Display not charging MBP Late 2011

    Hello All,
My new Macbook Pro (Late 2011) will not charge when connected to my 24in LED Cinema Display. The power indicator on the menu bar says "Not Charging" and the LED in the magsafe cable is dim. Is this a known limitation of the older Cinema Displays?
    Thanks,
    c.

I had the same problem. I found this
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2006045?start=0&tstart=0
.. which suggestes "wiggling" the magsafe connector a little. It worked for me.

  • Air Drop not working on iMac

My Airdrop is not finding my iPhone or my iPad.  I have all the latest updates.

  • Can not shut down late 2011 MacBook Pro and turn it back on again without the hard drive disappearing?

Ok, I have searched for months for an answer to this question to no avail, probably because no one has experienced it before. I am hoping however that you guys can help me figure this one out cause it is driving me nuts! Also, I am not entirely sure what section of the support I should put this under so if I stick it in the wrong place, I apologize.
Right now my problem is very simple. When I turn off my laptop, and then try to turn it back on, my internal hard drive disappears... and I get the blinking folder with a question mark on it. I have figured out something interesting however. I have an install disk with Ubuntu Linux on it. If I boot into that first, then RESTART the laptop, not shut down and turn back on, it reads the internal hard drive just fine and I can boot as if there is nothing wrong.
Second part to the problem... If I allow the laptop in either OSX or Windows to go to sleep (aka shut off the hard drive but the computer remains on), when I attempt to wake it up, I am greeted with the usual log in screen of whichever OS I am in, but is frozen and after a few seconds goes black and restarts the computer to find that... Surprise! The hard drive is gone
I have tried every trick in the book that I can think of, but can not seem to come up with a solution to the problem... I know when the problem happened and if anyone thinks that that will help them figure this out I will type everything I did up till, including the crash that caused this, and my attempted fixes, but I have class right now so only if you guys want it I will type all that out.
What I am currently running is:
    2011 MacBook Pro 13in screen
    4Gb of Ram
    1TB internal Hard Drive
OSX 10.11.whatever the newest update is... just updated the other day again.
Windows 8.1 on BootCamp 5 (yea I know its not supposed to work but it does) again, fully updated
Ubuntu 13.10 (I think? Doesn't really matter, its just an install disk I use to boot the computer)
If there is anything else that you guys need me to provide, I can, just simply ask. I can provide as much info as is necessary.

Sorry it took me so long to write back, But unfortunately this didn't help my issue.
My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be?

  • InDesign crashing in CS5.5 on OS 10.8 and 10.7, mid 2012 macbook and late 2011 imac

@indesign on twitter recommended i paste my crash report here. Enjoy! pastebin.com/W62vhw9S

Sorry, it crashes on opening the doc. Sometimes i get as far as scrolling down a couple of pages. Also, i'm not sure what an in place upgrade of OS is, but both machines are factory OS + only standard software updates. I didn't migrate the CS applications; the suite was installed on both machines directly from the discs. I am now far enough into a new doc started from scratch Monday night that I won't try to salvage the old one, but in case this happens to the new doc later this week (knock on wood), i am still curious if it's possible to isolate the corrupt element. Does the crash report say? I don't know how to read it... Once I had a corrupt file and was able to salvage it by re-saving it in a different location, but that hasn't worked this time.

  • Air drop not showing up for my mac pro

    Hi,
I can send files from my Mac Pro to my Macbook pro - But i can't send them from my macbook pro to the Mac pro - The mac pro just doesn't show up for me to drop files on to.
Does anybody have any help or advice on how i can sort this?
I'm running OS lion on both computers, latest updates.
    Thanks

And if it did show up previously, what have you done in between the time it did and did not?
P.S. Using all UPPERCASE on the internet generally indicates you wish to shout your message, and comes across as rude.  If that is not your intent, please either check that your keyboard is working, and the caps lock key is not stuck, or that you aren't holding down the shift key while typing.  Most people will not respond to those using uppercase.  Thank you...
