Air or Pro for work? Using 8-9 hours everyday

Hi, I need to purchase a laptop for work but torn between a Macbook Air and Macbook Pro.
I'll be using it for 8-9 hours everyday, which is a lot of use. I mostly use it for emails, word processing, Powerpoint/Excel stuff, web browsing, and streaming videos.
I'm thinking the Air sounds good, but I'm just worried that because I'll be using it so much that it might not last as long as the Pro.
Would appreciate any advice!
Thanks.

It is not possible to change anything on the Retina models once they are purchased. Everything but the SSD/Flash storage is soldered onto the logic board (That is the main system board better known as the Motherboard). The SSD/Flash storage module is of a proprietary design and shape and although there are some companies offering replacement units for the older, original, Retina display models I don't know if those same companies will make one for the newer models. Only time will tell. But if you do repplace it for a bigger, more storage capacity, unit that voids the Apple warranty.
I also suggest you factor in the cost of the Applecare extended warranty because to fix any Mac computer once the warranty is over it is very expensive. So much so it is almost better to buy a new system. This is even more so for the Retina models because of all the component soldered to the main system board.

I can't register the webcam in JMF. WinXP crashed with Blue-screen-of-dead.
The crash occurs on installation of JMF when the installer tries to detect my capture devices.
Windows also crashes when i open the JMF Registry Editor and tell it to search for my capture devices.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro for home use

    Hello guys,
I've been using usual Windows PCs at home (watching movies through HDMI, playing a few games - Counter Strike and random racing games), browsing internet, working in PS and Light room etc, but mostly for watching HD movies. But I was able to get myself Early 2008 Mac Pro - 10gb memory, two dual core intel xeon processors, 256 Ati Radeon graphics cards and 1tb ssd hard drive. Now I wanted to know how good is Mac Pro for home use? As I said I don't do many things with my windows based PC and wanted to switch to faster, quieter mac pro. Any opinions?  How good it is as a home entertainment center?
P.S. Counter strike is available now for Mac, so I don't really care about other games.

dump the 2600XT and there I would pay for a Mac Edition AMD 7950, else PC card
    1TB SSD is unusual gift
even though 8 cores it is 6 yrs old and most things don't use 8 cores that much, it predates the i7-920,
USB3 has to be added if you want it or put USB3 on your LAN router is what I do.
It does not get the official nod of support from Apple for Windows 8/8.1 but it does if you want run 7 or 7 Pro (dual cpu support)
FBDIMMs have gotten better and cheaper if you want or need to, many do, often due to early death.

  • MacBook Air or Pro for Print/SocialMed/Video

I know this has been asked in all different ways but can't seem to find a thread that has what I'm wondering...appreciate the time and effort all of you put into these messages for those of us who don't pour over all the technical specs!
I'm a graphic designer (I'm in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator 80% of the day) but I also create training videos, iPad apps, iBooks and create everything for social media venues for my company. I also do a lot of the same on the side when I can for freelance jobs as well as create things for family events.
I'm looking to replace my home iMac with a MacBook but not sure which; the Air or Pro. I have a 2 x 2.26 Quad-core intel, 6GB Mem MacPro at work so that's what I'm use to working with. I beleive, from other reading, it's a nice to have the 8GB Mem but I also know this is all stuff I can add. I'm looking to spend around $2,000. I'm leaving it up to you pros out there to let me know what's the best bang for my buck.
Thanks to all who take the time to respond! Love this community!

If I were in your position, I would choose one of these:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC976LL/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0ML2LL/A
I'm not certain that the 16 GB RAM is mandatory, but it would be nice.
My principle concern is the GPU capability.  Both of these units have discrete GPU which will give you optimum performance in a note book.
Yes, both are refurbished units.  I have done this three times and I recommend this path.  They have always looked as if new with the same warranty and telephone support as a new one.  It's your money.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Air or Pro for gaming.

Hi i was wondering if any of you could answer a couple of questions for me, i am looking to buy a new macbook air or pro (not sure which) but i was wondering if i could play a PC game via bootcamp? would it work okay? Also would a wireless PS4/3 or Xbox 1/360 controller work wirelessly?
Which laptop would be more suited to this?
    Thanks, Jake.

  • Air or Pro for Recording vocals with GarageBand or PT and Producing

I'm considering buying a MacBook and would like to get a new Air. I will be using it mainly for recording my vocals on beats that I have bought on iTunes. I'm also going to be taking a couple of Coursera classes on music production. Can the new Air's handle GarageBand or Pro Tools well? I've been using my iPhone 4S with GarageBand to record but I would like to do more editting of my vocals with Pro Tools. The reason I like the Air is b/c it is light and easy to transport.

One thing with vocalists, I can think of, is to show them the input device, and have them watch the clip meter. After a few takes, if they are somewhat savvy at singing into a mic, they'll start to back off on strong notes, and moving in on subtle notes. If you watch a pro singer on stage, you'll see them pulling the mic in close for soft stuff, and backing it way off for the strong notes. In the studio, the same techniques can be used, but the person has to back away, rather than a hand held mic pulled away.
Hardware can help this to an extent, but the singer has to take some action to get the best performance recorded. If I were going to use hardware, it'd probably be limiting more so than compression. Limiting can keep your signal under control, without doing too much to the dynamics. I'd prefer to save compression for post, so I can decide what sounds best. I used to have a female vocalist with an amazing voice. i was NEVER able to capture her properly on tape, since I had no pre processing at all. She is still in this area, and I have invited her to come record some vox for me, because I want to see if I can now get a grip on them. If I ever do, she'll be featured on an upcoming CD

  • QuickTime Pro for Commercial Use?

    Hi,
I have a quick question which I hope will be easily answered; I've read the EULA for QuickTime to no avail, and tried to find online contact details for someone at Apple but I was defeated by the website and wasn't able to find a way to contact someone with this inquiry, so my apologies if this isn't the correct forum for it.
My question is - can the regular version of QuickTime Pro be used for commercial purposes, or is it only for non-commercial purposes?
I have always assumed it is able to be used for pretty much anything, but I want to clarify - I've been investigating other codecs recently (specifically, DivX, for which the software is only available for non-commercial use - if you want to use it commercially you're required to apply for an entirely separate commerical license which is priced somewhat obscenely).
    Thanks,

I'm looking for a reference to show my co-workers concerning downloading and using the free player on corporate machines. I'm getting conflicting answers and need a link to point to.
I work for a large automotive manufacturer, and currently the IT coordinator in my building is telling me: "Quick Time is free for individual use, but not for Corporate use." I can't find anywhere on the web or in the license agreement that states that.
From what I can glean from the license agreement, corporate users are not allowed to distribute it to multiple computers without special licensing. How much does a license to distribute to multiple computers cost?
I'm in tech support here, and I'd like to be able to put this on people's machines legally when they ask for it.

  • How do I stop my iPhone 5s safari from syncing with my iPad Air which is for company use only

I basically have been given an iPad Air for company use only so therefore cannot have anything from my personal iphone syncing with my ipad. Stupidly I signed in with the one Apple ID account. I've turned on private browsing and turned off my iCloud and I've also turned auto syncing off in iTunes. Will this do the trick? And if I turn it in again will my history be synced? Thanks.

    Hi,
The answer is to delete everything off your iPad and set it up again as a new device with a new Apple ID.
If you go to Settings>iCloud and choose Delete Account, this will get rid of your Apple ID on the iPad.
Then you need to go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings.
Once that's done, set up the iPad as a new device, and create a new Apple ID when doing so.

  • MacBook Air or Pro for 2012 Student (heavy multitasker)?

    Hey Apple Community,
Brief Background: I have been using the MacBook (December 2010), and it has been a boon - but it is time to move on. I waste anywhere between 1-3 hours just waiting for it to load, or else having to reboot it and open things again. Whatever I do, within an hour of use it just lags to the point where I end up doing my work on my iPhone or relocating to the school library where I can use a PC.
As such, I want to buy a new MacBook. I will be writing two books, doing academic research, and soon starting my JD.
I need a computer mainly for the following tasks:
    - Word processing et al (pages, word, powerpoint)
    - Internet (heavy multitabbing ... I mean very heavy)
    - Internet streaming films, shows, etc.
    - Music (Itunes)
Perhaps most defining, I do all of these at the same time, utilizing Apple's 'Spaces' feature to the max - so the chosen mac would have to be very Multitask-Friendly (VERY!). I want something that will be able to effortlessly hold up all of these tasks at the same time. Harddrive space is less important (I am willing to put all of my music, movies and photos on an external harddrive if necessary). I'd like a computer that can do all of this very quickly, and would also be very portable (but I think the Pro is lightweight enough).
I am leaning towards the MacBook Air.
I would be grateful for any help at all.

I think the MBair would meet your needs.  Here's a comparison with the MBpro.

  • MacBook air or pro for Art student in university?

    Hey,
I'm about to start year 12 then go onto study art in university after that. I'm looking to buy a Mac for school and personal use but I'm stuck between the air and the pro. My primary uses are:
    YouTube
    Facebook
    Twitter
    Downloading & listening to music
Downloading & watching movies and tv shows
Uploading photography for my art work and saving photos for art
    Writing essays.
That's about all. I use iTunes for music and movies and such do I dont know if that affects storage space.
I was originally going to go with the air but I thought I would get some more opinions on what I should get.
    Thanks in advance.

Here's a comparison of the two.

  • MacBook Air or Pro for Music Production

    Hello!
So, I am a music producer for a couple of years now and I am working with my 5/6 years old MacBook Pro 15" with a Core2Duo, 4GB (RAM) and 160GB HHD (5200rpm - I think) and is very frustrating to be able to have multiple vst's / plugins to work simultaneously (Using Logic Pro X and Ableton Live 9).
I'm with some doubts among the MacBook Pro (15.4 ") i7 Quad-Core (2.0 GHz) with 8 GB memory (RAM) and Iris Graphics Pro, MacBook Pro (13") i5 Quad-Core with 8GB (RAM) or a MacBook Air i5/i7 with 8GB (RAM).
I do not have much money to spend at the moment, so was wondering if any of these MacBook will last me a few years?

  • Air or pro for photoediting

I'm looking for a new computer to use for a photoediting and possible DJ business startup.  I like the portability of the air and the power/beauty of the Retina Pro. Bottom line, I need to make a decision based on quality, longevity, and value. Any help would be great!
Also, what Photo-editing software do you professional photographers recommend? Lightroom, Aperture, etc.?

I have a early 2011 MBP 13" 2.3 i5 model. I do photography and edit in PhotoShop CS5/CS6 and Lightroom. I have my MBP connected to external 24" display. Im in the same boat looking to upgrade.
On my MBP 13" (2011) model, I got 16GB RAM ($85), and 256GB Samsung SSD ($250) I bought from Frys Electronics and popped them in my MBP. Its easy, nothing to it. With apple this would been easy $700 upgrade. My MBP run fricken great, PS CS5/6 run fast, no lags, and its takes 5 second load PS or Lightroom app.
Retina Display is great, I want one, but I dont think in my opion it is worth it. Cant upgrade the unit RAM/SSD drives, and if you dont have apple care I hear repair cost is expensive and hard.
People where editing and taking great and amazing photos, publishing work before retina display came around, or even my MBP model was around. So to say Retina Display is a must for photographers is all hype, thats what they said about 17" MBP last version. Always going to be someting better.
If money no issue, go for it. But do get the 16GB as others have said in this post, it is soldered into the bored. I save some money get Non-MBP, use extra money for apple care or Wacom Intous5 tablet, etc.
My 13" MBP on external monitor which it is 90 percent of the time works great. Im only upgrading for the USB 3.0 feature so when I work on files between external drive and my MBP will be faster loading and prevewing. As well as uploading my files from a shoot via USB 3.0 card reader. So Im either going get MBP 13" or the base 15" 2012 model.

  • Macbook air vs. pro for uni science student

my macbook is 5years old and its time for a new computer. i was planning on getting another macbook since its worked so well and ive never had any problems with it, but upon realizing they are discontinuing the macbook i decided otherwise.
im a 3rd year earth science student, so i spend time writing up labs and essays in microsoft word and using excel from time to time, but i also use my computer a lot for music and photos - sometimes some other programs i have to download for courses i take at school. really trying to figure out which computer would be better for me and i really have no idea. ive already got an 750gb external hard drive where ive got everything stored from my old mac, and i plan to put some pictures on cds onto the drive with my old computer. after that i suppose i wouldnt have a use for a cd drive, but im debating on whether the air is really a good idea or not.
im still old fashioned and prefer writing my notes in lectures than using powerpoint. so if the air is a bit slower i dont think that would bother me.
biggest thing is the whole cd drive, all opinions for my situation would be appreciated. thanks!

I just sold my Macbook Pro 13" i5 processor, 8GB RAM for the new 13" MBA i5 4GBRam.  It is such a huge difference in size and wait that I would never go back to something so bulky(I know MBP isn't really bulky, but things have changed). It is plenty fast for everything I do...heavy duty web surfing, email, writing papers, hd video, music, etc. and I find that I still have yet to fill up the 128GB SSD it came with...I'm at about 60GB...it is truly the best computer you'll ever own.
