Is tehre any way to make air play work witht eh first gen Apple TV.
I love it and don't want to replace it but want to do air play from my IOS devices

I am finding it all a little confusing. I like the functionality of the airport express but wonder if the apple tv device allows the same with music and also adds the option to display on the tv?
I currently use an ethernet connection to link my SONY internet tv to my broadband. I watch iplayer and lovefilm on the TV. I want to be able to use Airplay to link my itunes via my iphone/ipod or ipad to the AV system. I have phone connections and optical connections on my AV system but not ethernet or Airplay.
Can I use the apple TV to act as both the video display, keep my options to watch internet TV but also added options around the Apple TV AND with the same device connect the optical link to my AV system and enjoy itunes music?

the appletv will work with airplay audio and airplay AV
the appletv will connect to the tv using hdmi and optical for audio if you want
the appletv when connected by hdmi does not remove other features from your setup it does not have the power to block your current options to watch internet tv unless you don't have enough hdmi ports

You would have to use home-sharing if streaming from a computer. Computer would need to be on and running iTunes.

I tried something new yesterday after reading all these messages. My ATV3 was situated on top of my satellite box and I noticed that it was quite warm. The instruction manual suggests that the box not go over a certain temperature, so I moved the box to a location without the heat under it. It now works without any problem at all...at least, so far.

AppleTV, Air Play, and DVDs

I installed Mountain Lion on my 2011 iMac and attempted to stream DVDs via Air Play to my Apple TV2 and HDTV, thus bypassing my free-standing DVD player. It was my understanding that Air Play would send anything appearing on my iMac to my television. But when I play a DVD via the Apple DVD Player that came with my iMac, and turn on Air Play, the window on my computer immediately turns into a chess board pattern, that is, alternating black and white squares. If I turn off AirPlay, the correct DVD image and sounds appear. Have tried a couple of DVDs with the same result.

Right, DRM. Makes sense. Sort of, because DVDs play perfectly on my iMac. It is only a problem when I invoke Air Play to the Apple TV2/HDTV. Some sort of glitch. Thanks.

My Macbook Air(2012) and Apple TV won't mirror!!

I purchased New MacBook Air August 2012 and Apple TV last month.
They are updated as the most recent versions.
They all are up-to-date and they are all on the same network.
They work sometimes, and most of times it won't airplay. (they don't conncect properly to each other.)
I don't want any answers about "get updates and they need to be on the same network."
Oh My home sharing is on, too. but doesn't work. they are under the same ID.
Internet works Fine!! because I can download everything on the Apple TV.
EXCEPT!!! Home Sharing and Airplay
I think it's Apple TV problem because I have iPhone5 and when my MacBook Air works, iPhone works too.
Do you think I should bring it in to the Apple Store??
I thought it was my MacBook Air problem because it wasn't updated properly, but nope. I think it is the TV.
Please help me. I'm so frustrated- about this- I was so excited about this, and I had problems from the beginning.

I think you are saying mirror works sometimes but not others? If that is the case then it is likely interference from a household appliance or something near by knocking your network.
As you purchased you MB Air around the time OSX 10.8 was released, if you have NEVER had mirroring, confirm you have that OS and now OS X 10.7 Lion. Even the most updated Lion will not mirror.
If neither of these are the case I have mis-read your post.

Hi Everyone,
hope this message finds you all in time. The recent Apple TV update 5.1 is terrible. Apple knows it is which is why (thankfully for some relentless user -I have no idea who but I believe it was under threat) they have allowed to sign 5.0.2 again which means you can downgrade your Apple TV 2 and 3 to a 5.0.2 version via iTunes. Who knows how long they will keep the window open but I have downgraded my ATV early this morning. I couldn't post this earlier because I was out all day but I am doing it now.
Here's how to do it:
1) Connect your ATV to your computer via a Mini USB (not included with ATV but included with many other electronic devices) - in order for your ATV to appear in iTunes you must FIRST plug the USB cable to your computer and ATV and only THEN plug the power cable.
2) Download your ipsw restore file from Apple.
5.0.2 (ATV 2): AppleTV2,1_5.0.2_9B830_Restore.ipsw
5.0.2 (ATV 3): AppleTV3,1_5.0.2_9B830_Restore.ipsw
3) In iTunes select yout ATV, hold SHIFT and click on Restore
4) Find and choose the downloaded IPSW file in the Open Dialog Box and hit Next
5) As long as Apple still signs that version the Restore process will begin and will take a few minutes to complete.

No. There are some apps that allow you to control the laptop remotely from an iPad, however, but that doesn't sound like what you need.

It seems like it's only giving me a choice of one speaker system or the other, not both at the same time.

Unfortunately not, however you can select multiple speakers from iTunes on a computer, which may be a viable option if you have a mobile device with the remote app installed.
