Air Port Time Capsule Connection

I have just bought an AirPort Time Capsule. I have connected it to my router via Ethernet, and from my MacBook I can see the new Network. I can also connect the Time Capsule to my MacBook for back-up.
Questions:
1. Am I supposed to connect the Time Capsule as above, and should it stay connected via Ethernet to the router permanently?
2. I now have two networks, the previous one via my router, and the new AirPort one: what is the difference, and which one should I be using?
3. How do I use the Time Machine to back up my iPhone?

The TC should be in bridge mode and you should create a wireless network.
It is totally up to you if you keep two wireless networks running.. turn it off in the main router or use roaming type. ie same wireless name in the TC as the main router, same security but should be wpa2 personal and same password.
The TC should be connected by ethernet to the main router .. that is best for speed.

The old router one can be used as guest network.. for example.
Use the new TC one for speed.. as it should be a lot faster for most of your clients.. but for some old PC equipment for example the old router might still be the best.
There is no problems doing this btw.. just select yourself what works best. Trial and error but I think any Apple stuff will do best with the TC.
3. How do I use the Time Machine to back up my iPhone?
Time Machine is Mac software.. it has nothing to do with Time Capsule.. nor the iphone.
iOS backs up to iCloud or iTunes in the computer.. your computer can then backup iTunes to the TC.. so it will indirectly backup the iphone.

  • New Air Port Time Capsule Not Working With Old Airport Express

I have been running a home network comprised of a Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) and 5 ea Air Port Express (A1264) for several years with no problem.
The Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) died and I replaced it with an Air Port Time (A1470). Now none of the Air Port Express (A1264) work, all flashing yellow. All other network functions seem to work okay, Time Capsule Backup, Apple TV, Internet …
I am using AirPortUtility 6.3.1 for setup but do not see any way to setup the Air Port Express.

Reset the Express to factory and start over.. they should work.. are you using all 5 in extend wireless mode?
When you reset the Express click on the wifi icon in the top menu area.. and the newly reset AEx will appear in the list.. click it and Airport utility will open and attempt to automagically connect it to the TC.

  • HT1178 Air port time capsule

Does the Air port time capsule have to be permanently connected to the WAN input to provide a wireless network ? I have a wireless network in my house and where I want to keep my Air Port Time Capsual i have no WAN conectoin anywhere close!

I am trying to interpret your question.
I have a wireless network in my house and where I want to keep my Air Port Time Capsual i have no WAN conectoin anywhere close!
What you really mean is ethernet connection?? A LAN connection?
You would never connect the TC to WAN.. unless you mean to replace your main router.. !!
If you are happy using the TC as the main router or even as a bridge router and just continue to use your current wireless network, you would plug it into the main router whereever that is located. It doesn't matter where.
The TC can join a wireless network.. but it is seriously poor..
Here is how.. look at the screenshots here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5719954?tstart=0
It is super slow.. it will cause the TC to become a dumb client on the network.. it will no longer have ethernet ports.. or a WAP.. just don't.

  • Air Port Time Capsule, Sonos Play 1, iTunes, Apple TV

    Hi,
I'm looking at purchasing an Air Port Time Capsule 2TB and a Sonos Play 1. I'd like to run all my iTunes from the APTC to the Sonos Play 1 and the films onto my Apple TV. I'd like to do this without having to turn on my macbook pro.
My macbook pro only has a 500gb harddrive and is maxed out for space. Being able to do this would save having to turn on my laptop just to listen to music or watch a film.
Will this be possible or does anybody else have any ideas?
    Help would be appreciated
    Carl

Sonos may be able to play the music but you cannot stream the movie without itunes running. The TC is NOT a media player.. it is a dumb store for files.
With iTunes you have no choice but to run a computer.. but the iTunes can be stored on the TC if you must..
A large USB drive plugged into your laptop is faster, more reliable and can be backed up by Time Machine.. A TC cannot be backed up by Time Machine, it is slow and will have issues with the library and running iTunes.
It can be pressed into duty.. but will never shine.

  • Gmail does not work through Air Port / Time Capsule

I have narrowed down my problem with sending and receiving email to the Time Capsule base station. If I select the crappy Linksys router/wifi access point that is closest to my cable modem I am able to send and receive mail to both Gmail and my own hosted service. If I select the base station in my Time Capsule, which connects to the Linksys then I receive "imap.gmail.com is not responding".
Time Capsule is in Bridge mode. I have also tried putting the Time Capsule in "Distributes a Range of IP Addresses" too.
What's weird is that my mac is always connected to the Time Capsule and it is able to get mail without any problem.
Also, I have no problem accessing mail when I turn on 3G cellular data.
Problem is definitely with the Time Capsule. Thoughts?

This is most likely because you are using a cable modem.. please give the details of the modem.
If that is the case you need to power off the cable modem for a time.. 5min .. 30min.. 60min.. overnight.. indeterminiate. Each ISP is different. But the MAC address of the computer has been captured and the lease is only offered to that computer.
The TC must be in router mode.. this is assuming a pure modem and setup WAN port to the modem ethernet.
If you keep having trouble give exact network details.. modem.. make and model? Type of broadband service. and how the TC is setup.

  • HT1178 how to install a usb hard drive though air port time capsule

I am looking to connect a usb hard drive to my time capsule airport. The primary purpose of this drive is to create a shared drive between the three computers in the house, not for time machine. Is there any specific steps or procedures I need to know to make this happen? thanks.

Plug it in, click here, and follow the instructions. The drive needs to be formatted as FAT16, FAT32, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and may need to be connected through a powered USB hub.

Two questions, does resetting my Mac Book Pro late 2008 speed up after resetting? Also, do i need to get rid of my WLAN router to make my AIR PORT time capsule work?
    Am grateful for any answers...its a 15,4"...
Will soon buy a new one, is battery better on 13 than 15 "?
    Have a great day...

If you mean restoring OS X, that won't necessarily have any effect on speed.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

No need for the WLAN router with AirPort Time Capsule.

  • I am connected to time capsule via wi-fi but air port says not connected and disk utility does not see it

I am connected to time capsule via wi-fi but air port says not connected and disk utility does not see it. I had it connected via ethernet and it still did not see it. Then i disconncectd it from ethernet and did the Wi-fi connection and am able to post this message but air port still does not see it.

Disk Utility will not "see" the Time Capsule, so no need to waste any more time on that issue.
but air port still does not see it.
Not sure what you mean by "air port" here.

  • Time Capsule Connection Help Needed (Flashing Amber)

    Guys,
I've been trying to troubleshoot my Time Capsule connection for a week now and I have had zero luck.
I have a Imac with OSX 10.6.8  that uses AirPort v 5.6.1.  I have a Cat-5 (ethernet cable) plugged from my Time Capsule port (looks like this <-->) into an available port in my cable mode/router.  My Imac is also plugged into this router.  The two cat-5 (ethernet) cables are side by side.
    So....
Every time I plug in the Time Capsule I get the following prompt via AirPort.
AirPort Utility found a Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation) that is
    reporting problems.
Time Capsule's Name :  My Capsule
              IP Address: 10.0.1.1
              Versino: 7.6.1
              AirPort ID: 12:88:93:CC:FF:72
If this is not the AirPort wireless devise you want to setup you can select another from the list on the left. If you don't see it make sure.... Blah blah blah....
To make a long story tollerable I do see my Time Capsule on the left at the top. Its the only one and its selected by default.  So I do the next logical thing right?  I click "Continue" and AirPort reads the Time Capsule's configuration.... and then...... I get the error
An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged
in and in range of your computer or connected via
    Ethernet and try again. (-6753)
Can anyone help me understand why I can grab the Time Capsule's IP Address but AirPort can not read the hardware's (Time Capsule) config?
    I'm at a loss.
Could my ethernet cable be the issue?

    Hackintosh,
Thanks man... Yes, I plugged it into the circle symbol with no joy.  I also went to Wal Mart and baught a new seven foot cat-5 for $10.  Again I still have the flashing amber light.
After plugging in the ethernet cable into the circle icon port AirPort returns the following prompt.
I reset the TC (ball point pen to the reset hole untill fast blinking amber light occurs) and entered the needed params and it returns this error.
An error occured close the configuation window and try again.
It must be a config parameter that I'm setting incorrectly. There's a bunch so who knows what I'm doing wrong.
I just need the to talk to my Imac so i can get a backup executed. A wireless connection will take too long.
FYI: The cat-5 is brand new and is 100% functional (green light on the TC and router.)

  • Hi.. I'm new to mac, I've got a mac book air and time capsule is it possible to save music, video from iTunes Store directly to time capsule leaving my 128GB Mac free? If so  please help..

Hi.. I'm new to mac, I've got a mac book air and time capsule is it possible to save music, video from iTunes Store directly to time capsule leaving my 128GB Mac free? If so  please help..

You can move your iTunes library.. Apple have explicit instructions to do it. If the library is moved to the TC and accessed over wireless, the efficiency of the whole system will drop dramatically..
A file you download goes.. Modem---TC--Laptop--Back to TC--Store on disk. Double looping the wireless slows it dramatically..
As far as using TC for your iTunes.. you CAN.. but SHOULD YOU?
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Is there way to share Air-Port Wi-Fi connection through ethernet port?

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this, I have wireless network in the building, and is there way to configure Mac Mini to share Air-Port Wi-Fi connection through ethernet port (feed Vonage adapter)?

Have you actually shared wi-fi to ethernet on a Mac? I ask because it is not usually that simple, it is a more complicated configuration. Most folks who do it the way you described get a self assigned IP and nothing connects.

I have a Vonage phone adapter and Vonage does not provide the info that you need to hand configure these boxes, I have tried in the past with the one I have with a US phone number from here in Mexico.
